Why ‘St. Luke’s?’
A
few of you have been around St. Luke’s longer than I. My guess is someone in this community knows a little something about how we got our name. My favorite theory is that what we know about Luke – the disciple of Jesus, the guy who is credited with writing the Gospel of Luke – informed our decision to borrow his name. There is the emphasis in Luke’s life on healing: Lots of sources beyond the Bible refer to Luke as a physician, as of course does the Gospel of Luke. St. Luke’s emphasizes bringing a healing touch into the lives of people. So that checks out. There is the humility: Being a physician doesn’t mean he sent his kids to private school; in fact it was pretty common practice to have a slave who served as the family physician. Humility is a good characteristic for a faith community that understands the depth of God’s grace. So far, so good. Plus, what Luke’s Gospel emphasizes more than the other three gospels is also telling about the character of this man: • He loved the poor. • He wanted the door to God’s Kingdom open to all. • He respected women, who were second-class citizens of the day. • He saw hope in God’s mercy for everyone. We are an open community of Christians, gathering to seek, celebrate, live and share God’s love with all creation. Sounds suspiciously like Luke’s Gospel. So, was Luke a model for this ministry? Fuquay, Senior Pastor – St. Luke’s expanded its family of worship styles to include a contemporary service on Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary. It features relevant messages by our senior pastor along with amazing musical talent and a more relaxed, interactive environment.
Later @St. Luke’s 6PM in Robertson Chapel with Dr. Marion Miller – Experience a multi-faceted worship that draws on cultural expressions of spirituals, Gospel, hymns and jazz music; featuring Later Band and Vocals, and a thought-provoking message. Communion served every Sunday and is available to all persons. Light refreshments before and after worship.
The Garden 8:15, 9:15 & 10:15AM Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre with Dr. Linda McCoy – The Garden is a satellite ministry of St. Luke’s providing non-traditional worship in a comfortable, casual setting. Music is provided by The Good Earth Band. The worship experience is hosted off campus at 9301 Michigan Rd., Indianapolis. It is designed to reach out to seekers who might not otherwise engage with an established Christian community.
Taizé 5-5:45PM Third Sunday of each month, by the baptismal font in the Sanctuary, with musical community and Rev. Kim King – This service of peace and candlelight offers a contemplative style of worship. Silence, scriptures, prayer and music combine to engage worshipers in a spiritual experience.

Taizé Musical Community
Small vocal and instrumental ensemble serving at monthly Taizé service (third Sunday, 5-5:45PM), rehearses one hour before each service. Contact Music Director Mark Squire at squirem@stlukesumc.com.
St. Luke’s Chancel Choir Welcoming New Singers
The St. Luke’s Chancel Choir serves each week in worship, supporting the congregation in their praise, offering inspiring and moving musical additions to each service, as well as presenting several concerts each year. This coming season includes special opportunities of singing with the Carmel Symphony & Anderson University choirs at the Palladium, the annual Christmas Concerts, and an international concert tour to Spain next May. While worship leading is the choir’s primary focus, the Chancel Choir undertakes numerous outreach projects – from supplying Fletcher Place Community Food Pantry with pasta & sauce, supporting Servant Day, and raising funds for St. Luke’s Outreach ministries. They also enjoy a profound level of fellowship and caring throughout their season. Previous choral experience is helpful, but not required of new singers. Ring In the New Ministry Season
The handbell choirs of St. Luke’s are excited to resume ministry this fall, and have several spaces within their ranks for individuals to join in the ministry. Joyful Rhythms rehearses each Monday night, and serves in a variety venues throughout the year. Director Marsha Coyner offers great coaching to individuals who may not have much experience in ringing bells. Wesleyan Ringers, under the direction of Mike Keller, rehearse on Wednesday evenings, and are seeking ringers with experience to fill out this high caliber ensemble! Contemporary Worship Director Fran Wyatt (wyattf@stlukesumc.com) is welcoming additional singers, players, dancers and artists to serve at the 10:45 Service. In a comfortable rotation of service, musicians can tailor the ‘serve’ to match their availability, and enjoy the great fellowship and inspiration that accompanies serving on a ministry team! Worship St. Luke’s Orchestra
The monthly contribution of the St. Luke’s Orchestra to worship is without compare! And now is the time to join their ranks. Whether a seasoned player, or perhaps a little rusty, the orchestra is welcoming new members for the upcoming season of ministry. STRING PLAYERS are particularly needed! Along with supporting worship at St. Luke’s, the orchestra has special opportunities planned, including a concert to support St. Luke’s Outreach ministries. The group practices once each month, and plays on the third Sunday of each month during the season. Love worship at St. Luke’s and want to find a way to be helpful in the weekly offerings, but don’t necessarily consider yourself a musician? Do you like to keep things organized, care about details that ‘make all the difference’, and like to work in the background? The newly forming Worship Support Team might be a place of satisfying involvement for you! This team looks after Sunday morning details – making sure that paraments are on pulpit and table as well as cared for when stored, see that candelabras are clean and ready for use, that candles are stocked, etc. and etc. Serve weekly, monthly, or as your schedule allows. GENESIS
ELEMENTARY MUSIC PROGRAM
Music activities include movement, playing rhythm instruments, and singing sacred songs. This youngest group of musicians offers songs two to three times per season in the Sanctuary, participates on Christmas Eve at the 3:00PM Service, and leads music for “The Mini-Track,” preschool worship service.
Young musicians are divided into two groups: K-2 & 3-4. Music activities include singing, movement and an instrumental program: Orff instruments, Boomwhackers and choir chimes. This group of musicians sings regularly in the Sanctuary on the second Sunday of the month throughout the season and participates at the 3:00PM

THE CHORISTERS
This is a nationally recognized program of instruction for music theory, ear training, music history, church history, hymnology, and overall musical training. Participants can earn Royal School Church Music ribbons and medals. The program is open to any singer who participates in the Tuesday evening program – Middle School Singers and The Choristers.

Preschool at 9:15 & 10:45
How often do we throw out the words, “I’ve got it”? More often than we’ve actually got it, I would think. You know who’s actually “got it”? God. God’s got it. He is everywhere and has power over everything. That’s what we want our preschoolers to learn this month. No matter what’s going on, God’s got it.
those ingredients could turn into warm, stickysweet, apple cobbler goodness. But if those ingredients just sit there, even though they have incredible potential, the flour will just stay powdery and tasteless. The butter will soften. And those apples will rot.
They’ll learn God has the power to answer prayer through the story of Elijah and the fire. They’ll hear the story of Moses and the burning bush and learn that God has the power to speak to them. We’ll continue with Moses and tell the story of the pillars of clouds and fire to show our preschoolers that God has the power to show us the right way to go. And finally, we’ll close the month with the super amazing story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego where preschoolers will learn that God is so powerful that He can always be with them. Always. And, because God’s always there, He’s always got it!
Elementary at 9:15 & 10:45
Have you ever walked through your local grocery store and noticed the potential just sitting on the shelves? You can head down one aisle and discover spices from around the world. Over in the produce stands, you can find the ripest apples, cartons of blueberries, maybe even some obscure Dragon Fruit, not to mention all of the staples on another aisle: flour, sugar, eggs, and milk. All incredible ingredients that will sit there and go bad unless someone takes them home and creates something delicious. You can speculate all day about the potential in that grocery store, but until there is some type of response to what you believe can really happen, it’s just potential. In other words, with the right kind of response, faith in a process I can’t fully understand, and a big mess of dishes,
Think about someone’s life, with all of the Godgiven, God-created ingredients: time, talents, opportunities, words and resources. We can choose to respond to what God has given us or we can ignore it. One of the most powerful things leaders and parents can do is to inspire their children to trust that God can do amazing things through the abilities God provides. Kids can grow up knowing that their faith in God’s ability profoundly affects how they live into their potential. That’s why we’re taking September to look more closely at what the Bible has to say about responsibility. We define responsibility as: Showing you can be trusted by what you say and do. We’ll be learning about four sets of people in the Old Testament to whom God gave great responsibility:
Children Adam & Eve, Noah, Abraham, & Miriam (Moses’ older sister). None of these people were perfect, and some messed up in big ways. But we see in each the potential God gives us to change the world! Our memory verse this month is Luke 16:10a, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” (NIV) When we show responsibility with the little things, there’s
a good chance we’ll have opportunity for greater responsibility in the future. The word responsibility really breaks down into how you respond with your abilities. And we want children to not only understand how to respond to the ability that God’s given them, but also how to respond to God’s ability to work through them to change the world around them.

Preschool
Classes (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year-olds. All teachers are experienced, qualified, and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be three years old by 9/1/2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year.
Parents’ Day Out
Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Emerging Adults Connect Through Mentoring This year, St. Luke’s is excited to launch our College Mentoring Program. This new initiative pairs up incoming college freshmen with adults who are willing to walk with them throughout their college experience. We kicked off our mentoring program with a cookout for mentors, students and their families. It was an exciting time for the group to come together and get to know one another. As the school year progresses, mentors are encouraged to keep in regular contact with their student, through a combination of phone calls, care packages, and various social media. There will also be opportunities to come together as a large group for community and resourcing. If you would like to know more about the program, or are interested in serving as a mentor, contact Mindie Moore.

This fall, the United Methodist Men will again offer a study titled Letters from Dad (not offered again until 2016). Learn to write the things you have always wanted to say but just didn’t know how. Leave treasured letters of love that will be readlong after you are gone. Build deep and lasting relationships with other men in your Legacy Group. UMW Reading Group Explore Chinese Revolution life
In September, the UMW Reading Group will explore Chinese life during the Cultural Revolution through the moving memoir of Zhu Xiao-Mei. In The Secret Piano: From Mao’s Labor Camps to Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Zhu Xiao-Mei provides an account of how her life changed from growing up in Shanghai, China as a piano protege to finding herself in a labor camp in Mongolia at the age of ten. Her story is one of survival and perseverance and the power of music to heal. Xiao-Mei is now one of the world’s most celebrated interpreters of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. She teaches at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique and has performed for audiences on six continents. We will meet on Monday, Sept. 22nd from 7-8:30 pm in the Parlor. What a Summer SAWS is having!
Summer Splash (VBS) 5th & 6th Grade students helped us construct five ramp frames and enjoyed writing heartfelt messages on the boards for the future recipients! During Servant Day Saturday two volunteer teams built ramps for two recipients who were both needy and happy to gain freedom from their homes! Thank You! We have been completing an average of three ramps per week thanks to volunteer, Jim Hamilton’s skillful scheduling of our resources, volunteers and donations.

You can be part of making Mustaja’s first birthday a real party in his family’s first new home. St. Luke’s teams up with Habitat for Humanity this month to provide homes for two Marion County families. Mustaja’s parents, Ismael Morsal & Aziza Hamid have three more children, Aisha, 10, Elamine, 5, Belai , 3, who will undoubtedly benefit from this birthday gift to their little brother. Dad works for Catholic Charities Refugee Program. He says his biggest hope is to “... work hard and save money to pay the mortgage and the bills on time.” Mustaja will be turn one in September, the month St. Luke’s plans to build his family’s home – and one more house just down the street for Burgess Scruggs, Jr. This will be Burgess’ first home - a lifetime dream: “something I can call my own and be proud of.” He has a son and two granddaughters and works in ministry at Eastside Baptist Church.

Disciple Bible Study Fall 2014 IntroDUCTION to Disciple Bible Study Some students have read the Bible, but haven’t really studied it. There’s a difference. Others find the Bible confusing and overwhelming to read alone. Others haven’t read scripture since elementary school. Still others seek a way to connect with new friends in a conversation that has some substance. Disciple Fast Track Bible Study is a great, fun way to grow in your faith, meet new friends and learn more about the Bible in a four-part set of classes. Starting with Disciple I Fast Track: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study, participants engage in a life-transforming 24-week, 75-minute class that offers an overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Besides 12 classes in Fall and 12 in Winter, the class requires a commitment to 20-30 minutes of daily reading. No previous Bible knowledge is necessary. You will read 60% of the Bible. At the end of this class you will know Bible basics from beginning to end, have new friends and no doubt, will grow stronger in your own faith. “I took Disciple because I knew I did not know much about the Bible,” one participant said. “Now, I understand the stories in the scriptures and how they all fit together. I get so much more out of the sermon and songs in worship. My faith has grown so much. And, the friendships I made in my group are very important to me!” Participants take Disciple I as a prerequisite to the other three studies. After Disciple I, the other levels may be taken in any order. There is even an online option!

Friday, September 12, 7-9pm, Parlor. “Get Low” is equal parts folk tale, fable and reallife legend about the mysterious, 1930s Tennessee hermit, Felix “Bush” Breazeale. Stars Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black. Gruff, confrontational, and ill-tempered, Felix has been the source of many malicious rumors over the years. Some say he’s a cold-hearted killer. When Felix announces his intentions to throw himself a massive funeral party before he passes away, word quickly spreads through town and anticipation starts to run high. Felix surprises everyone by revealing exactly why he shunned society to lead a life of solitude in the deep woods. Dessert served, donations appreciated. Creation Care Is Climate Change a Faith Issue? This Grandfather Says ‘Yes’
I am devoting my retirement years to speaking up on the most important issue I believe my children and grandchildren face: climate change. It is an issue which will determine everyone’s way of life for generations to come. Of particular concern to me is what climate change is doing to the availability of dependable sources of water – our most precious natural resource. Without reliable and dependable rainfall so many other situations become much more dire. It doesn’t take long to compose a litany of the consequences. As I write this, the water is not fit for drinking or bathing in many places throughout our world — perhaps most alarmingly in a major metropolitan area here in the Midwest: Toledo, Ohio. We hear about conditions in California where reduced atmospheric moisture has led to reduced snow fall, which in turn has produced serious drought, affecting livelihoods of thousands of ranchers and farmers, as well as the cost of living for all of us. But is climate change just another political issue, or is it also an issue for people of faith? People of faith are charged with caring for the Earth’s resources. Among other concerns, being good stewards of our environment means paying attention to what climate change does to our most vulnerable brothers and sisters – in Toledo and around the planet.
