Sermon Title – Dealing with Insecurity Scripture – I Corinthians 2:1-5

OUR Clergy Rev. Rob Fuquay, Senior Pastor Dr. Linda McCoy, Pastor of The Garden Dr. Marion Miller, Pastor of Later@St. Luke’s Rev. David Williamson, Pastor of Family & Children’s Ministries Rev. Jamalyn Peigh Williamson, Pastor of Outreach Ministries Rev. Kim King, Pastor of Congregational Care

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

Sunday, September 14, 2014 8:00, 9:15

PRELUDE

Kingdomtide: Green

“Te Deum”

WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS and INVOCATION * HYMN

Rev. Jamalyn Peigh Williamson

“God of Grace and God of Glory” “O God, Our Help in Ages Past”

* RESPONSIVE ACT OF PRAISE All singing:

And our defense is sure!

Leader:

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn us back to dust, and say, “Turn back, you mortals.” For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night. You sweep them away; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning; in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.

People: All: Leader: People:

O God, Our Help In Ages Past A paraphrase of Psalm 90, Isaac Watts’ hymn text was part of a larger compilation of Psalms set to Christian verse (1719). John Wesley included the text with modifications in his hymnal Psalms and Hymns, edits which remain today. Jesus, Remember Me A musical setting, from the Taize tradition, of Luke 23:42. Taize choruses, often sung with several repetitions, foster a contemplative, prayerful mode, and are utilized at the monthly Taize service held at St. Luke’s. Jesus Loves Me / How Great Thou Art This arrangement combines two very familiar hymns, utilizing the technique of quodlibet (two different melodies played at the same time). He Never Failed Me Yet In true Gospel style, Robert Ray’s anthem celebrates God’s faithfulness and deliverance, recalling Biblical stories of rescue as well as personal testimony. Make Me a Captive, Lord This text utilizes a sustained use of paradox which amplifies the New Testament concept of freedom, which can be achieved only by being a servant, or prisoner, of Christ (see 2 Cor. 12:9-10). By their cumulative effect the contrasts between "captive" and "free"; "sink" and "stand"; "my own" and "thine"; "unbent" and "leaned" grip our imagination and powerfully affirm our servanthood to Christ.

For all our days pass away under your wrath; our years come to an end like a sigh. The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong; even then their span[d] is only toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. Who considers the power of your anger? Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart.

All singing:

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad as many days as you have afflicted us, and as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glorious power to their children.
