SMALL GROUPS How do small groups work? • HOSTS: All groups have a host(s) who helps organize the group and facilitate conversation. • LOCATION: Groups meet in people’s homes around the city, in restaurants, workplaces and online as well as at St. Luke’s. • SIZE: Groups range in size, but average 10 – 14 people.

We believe that small groups are intentional places to make new friends who will support you, challenge you and serve alongside you as you grow in faith. Our hope for everyone is that they’d find this kind of community within St. Luke’s – whether your group meets at the church or in someone’s home in the greater Indy area. Currently, we have over 50 small groups representing over 600 people and this winter we hope to start more!

6

• DEMOGRAPHICS: Some groups have a specific demographic such as working women, young adults, couples with young children, empty nesters, etc. Though most are open to anyone! • CHILDCARE: We offer a childcare voucher program to help reimburse the cost of childcare for groups meeting in homes. Childcare is provided at select times for groups meeting at St. Luke’s.

A D ULT D I S C I P L E S H I P

What’s the commitment? • We ask you to commit to meet for 5 consecutive weeks to begin. (Don’t worry if you already know you’ll miss 1 or 2.) After 5 weeks, you have the option of continuing as a group together for another 5 weeks, joining a different group or trying another class or opportunity. • If your group chooses to continue, there is flexibility in scheduling. Some groups meet and then take breaks for holidays and the summer, others meet 3 out of 4 weeks per month; and some meet every other week. We hope you choose to meet at least 20 times per year. • As groups become a primary way we serve, each group agrees to do this 2 – 4 times per year.

How do I get involved in a group? This spring, groups will begin at our Grace Imathiu weekend and continue 5 weeks during Lent. Another sign-up opportunity will take place in April. • SAY HELLO – Stop by our booth or the Connect Here booths any Sunday. Folks there can answer your questions and get you registered. • SIGN-UP ON YOUR OWN – Visit stlukesumc. com/smallgroups or use the inserts in your worship guide on January 14, 21 & 28 to join new groups beginning the week of February 18. We’ll repeat this process in abbreviated form for a second launch the week of April 15. • REACH OUT – If you’re interested in a group between launches, that is great! Some existing groups always have openings and we also form a few new groups on an ongoing basis. Contact Rev. Eric Burton-Krieger, Pastor of Adult Discipleship at bke@stlukesumc.com or by phone 317-846-3404 x312. 7

DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY

What is Disciple Bible Study? Disciple Bible Study and Beyond are seven different long-term Bible studies. Each takes 24 – 34 weeks to complete. All classes start in late August, take a break for the holidays, resume in January and require 20 – 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week for homework. The foundational, beginning study is Disciple I – Fast Track. For Disciple I, no Bible knowledge is needed, just a desire to learn and grow in faith!

Why should I take Disciple I – Fast Track? At St. Luke’s, we hope everyone will take Disciple I at some point! As a Christian, or a person considering becoming a Christian, it’s a great feeling to really know what the Bible says. Many of us have never studied the Bible, Genesis to Revelation, beginning to end. Perhaps this is the time to dive in and take an in-depth class. The best part is there are no tests. Plus, you will meet awesome people and have a chance to discuss faith in a safe, friendly environment! Your life will be transformed. Fast Track is the 24 week version of the original 34 week class. Over 500 people at St. Luke’s have completed Disciple I – Fast Track. Join us!

What materials are needed? You will need the study manual(s) pictured beside the class description and a study Bible. Both are available in our Connections bookstore. Scholarships for class materials are always available. Once you own a study Bible you will use it for all these studies. Contact Susan Fuquay for a scholarship at fuquays@ stlukesumc.com.

JUST WALK ACROSS THE ROOM

Jan. 10 – Feb. 14 • E212 (Andrew Fiega and Trent Wood)

By Bill Hybels

This class pairs sound financial knowledge with biblical principles of money management and guides participants to develop a personal spending plan that reflects both. You will explore what both the Bible and our culture have to say about the five financial areas of life: earning, giving, saving, spending and debt reduction. There truly are realistic ways to find a balance between both viewpoints! Book needed.

Sharing faith with others is something we know we should do but…we’re not sure what to say or how to get into a conversation. We don’t want to offend someone or hang out on street corners. Could it be as simple as walking across a room? There are people who long for someone to take an interest in them – people who yearn to experience God’s love. They are looking for our smile, our encouragement and our friendship. Book needed.

Its halftime, a time of revitalization and for catching a new vision for living the second half, the half where life can be lived at its most rewarding. Book needed. 18

small groups in lent LENT: A Season of Preparation Plan to join a Small Group in Lent and meet for the 5 weeks leading up to Easter. (Groups begin during our Grace Imathiu Weekend, Feb. 9-10 and end late March) Over 800 people in St. Luke’s normally participate in Small Groups during Lent. They are a great way to get ready spiritually for Easter, to meet new friends and to serve our community. Here’s what happens: • Sign up online or through your worship insert beginning Jan. 14. Groups meet in homes, restaurants or at church.

• Attend the Grace Imathiu Weekend event to meet with your group prior to the start of Lent. If you’re unable to attend, plan to meet your group before or after our Ash Wednesday Service (Feb. 14) at 7PM.

• Plan to meet 60-90 minutes weekly, for five weeks, starting the week of Feb. 18 through the week of March 18. It’s OK if you have to miss a week.

• Groups discuss the sermon from the previous Sunday. They also choose one way to serve together during Lent. Service opportunities will be provided by St. Luke’s Outreach Ministry. • Groups wrap-up their initial commitment by taking communion together in worship on Maundy Thursday, March 29, at 7PM. (Childcare provided)

Looking for Lenten Small Group Hosts Consider hosting a new Small Group for Lent. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Rev. Eric Burton-Krieger at bke@stlukesumc.com or 317-846-3404 x312 by Monday, Jan. 29. • You choose the location, time and number of people you can accommodate. You can invite friends and St. Luke’s will publicize your group and help you fill it. • Groups can meet in your home, work place or a restaurant or coffee shop. • A discussion guide is provided that your group can follow together. • You may choose to co-host with a friend, dividing the responsibility as needed. • The most important gift you can bring is a warm, hospitable spirit. • A brief orientation is offered to each new host on either Sunday, Jan. 21 from 12:15 – 1:45PM or Monday, Jan. 29 from 6 – 7:30PM (meal provided.)

March 24 • 10 – 11:30AM • Fellowship Hall • registration required • no fee (Dhyana Raynor)

Recognizing that Lent is a time to make a special effort to develop a spiritual discipline, the Spiritual Life Center offers a 15-minute spiritual pause in your busy day. Expect a scripture reading, a meditation and a time of silence.

In preparation for Holy Week, spend a contemplative morning walking the labyrinth. Being able to walk and pray/meditate is the only requirement.

INTERACTIVE STATIONS OF THE CROSS Holy Week, March 26 – March 30 • when church is open • East end of Gathering Area • no registration or fee (Betty Brandt) To help you prepare for Easter, we’re inviting you on a meditative journey through the “stations” of Christ’s last days. Permanent Stations of the Cross can be found in most Catholic churches and we’ve adapted that practice for our context. The experience includes images, meditations and interactive activities to help you slow down and reflect. Included is an opportunity to walk a labyrinth. The entire experience is appropriate for your personal spiritual journey, your Lenten group, your family, your book study or any other group looking for a shared Lenten experience. A printed Stations of the Cross booklet will be available.

HOLY THURSDAY/GOOD FRIDAY PRAYER VIGIL Thursday, March 29 • 8PM – Good Friday, March 30, 7PM • Prayer Chapel and Spiritual Life Center (Betty Brandt) You are invited to make a time of prayer part of your Holy Week experience by participating in the 24-hour Holy Week Prayer Vigil. If you chose a late night/early morning time, someone will be in the building all night to welcome you and respond to your needs. David Williamson) “But everyone else has it.” “If you loved me, you’d get it for me!” When you hear these comments from your kids, it can be tough not to cave. It’s never too late to raise grateful kids.

POVERTY SIMULATION March 4 • 12:30 – 3:30PM • Great Hall St. Luke’s will host a Poverty Simulation! Understanding the day-to-day reality of poverty is important for everyone involved in fighting poverty – from policymakers to service providers. The Poverty Simulation is a unique tool that helps people begin to understand what life is like with a shortage of money and an abundance of stress. During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families, including single parents, people with disabilities and senior citizens on Social Security. Although it uses “play” money, fictional scenarios and time limits, the Poverty Simulation is not a game. It’s a simulation that enables participants to view poverty from different angles and then to discuss the potential for change within local communities. It’s designed to sensitize those who frequently deal with low-income families and to create a broader awareness among policymakers and community leaders. Sign up at stlukesumc.com.
