TODAY’S SPECIAL EVENTS

JUNE 9, 2013

The following is a list of events occuring today at St. Luke’s. For other events and upcoming information, pick up a COMMUNION MONTHLY, available at the end of the pews and at the Information Desk in the Narthex.

Special Musical Guests

SpringHill Day Camp Registration

Today we welcome some very special guests who have traveled all the way from Zimbabwe to sing for you! The Africa University Choir has been participating in the past week’s Annual Conference, and we are blessed this morning to have their soulful, inspirational presence with us in worship. Africa University, supported by the United Methodist Church, is conducting a capital campaign to endow an Agriculture chair and several student scholarships. If you would like to make a gift to support that goal, please place it in today’s offering plate (checks may be made payable to “St. Luke’s UMC” with “Africa University” on the memo line, or cash gifts placed in an offering envelope with “Africa University” indicated on the Special Offering line). We are grateful to be able to share in the gifts and talents of these young men and women.

In addition to our annual Summer Splash week-long, halfday opportunity for children, this year St. Luke’s is offering a full-day camp experience for children who have completed kindergarten-4th grade. SpringHill Day Camp will take place July 8-12, 9AM-4PM. Get all the details in the Communion Monthly or at www.stlukesumc.com.

Eco-Habit is "Visit a Farmers' Market" This morning, the Green Ministry brings a hint of a Farmers' Market to you. Stop by (P)reservation, owned by Melanie Miles, for jams, jellies and preserves. Find a list of local Farmers' Markets and pick up a punch card to win a Harvest Basket. Outside the main doors from 9-11AM.

Recycled Art in Galleries Catherine Cunningham’s joy is to create sculptures/assemblages and collages with used materials that would otherwise be discarded, lost or eventually decay in landfills. Hear stories about her pieces today at the artist's reception in the "Identity" Gallery, 10:30AM-12:30PM. This is the exhibit for June in both "Identity" and "Vision" Galleries.

Free Blood Pressure Screening Stop by C110 between 9-11 AM today for a free blood pressure screening. Offered the second Sunday of every month by St. Luke's Health Ministries. Please refrain from smoking or caffeine 30 minutes prior to the screening.

The Track Summer Schedule Happening now: preschool and pre-k children (age 3 by 9/12 to those not yet in kindergarten) are invited to the Mini-Track for Sunday School classes at 9:30 & 11AM. Children who have completed kindergarten through 4th grade will attend the first part of worship with their families. Following the Children’s Moment, they will be led by staff to a classroom for fun activities. They can be picked up by their parents in E106 or E108 following the service.

Summer Splash Registration Summer Splash – Kingdom Rock takes place July 22-26, 9AM-Noon for preschool children through those now completing 3rd grade. Register now at www.stlukesumc.com or in person this morning in the East Passage. There are options for older elementary and youth as well, and many adult volunteers are needed! Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare.

We believe in the one God, maker and ruler of all things, the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love. We believe in Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength. We believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the life of love and prayer, and in grace equal to every need. We believe in the Word of God contained in the Old and New Testaments as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice. SCRIPTURE Acts 9:1-9 (NRSV) Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” He asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were traveling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one. Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. For three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. SCRIPTURE RESPONSE READER: The word of God for the people of God. CONGREGATION: Thanks be to God.
