TODAY’S SPECIAL EVENTS

JUNE 16, 2013

The following is a list of events occuring today at St. Luke’s. For other events and upcoming information, pick up a COMMUNION MONTHLY, available at the end of the pews and at the Information Desk in the Narthex.

Summer Outreach St. Luke’s Outreach has committed to partner with Nora, Fox Hill, Springmill and Greenbriar Elementary Schools to help connect with the 75% of their students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. That is over 2,000 students in the area surrounding the church. To address this need, St. Luke’s will be hosting the “Back to School Extravaganza” at our church August 4. This event will provide school supplies, clothing, food and other services to children at these four schools. This is a large undertaking . . . so we are asking you to get involved in this effort by sponsoring a child for $25 to get them the supplies they need, or you can pick up a supply list in the Narthex today and bring donations to the main office. If you work for a business that would like to participate, please let us know and we will bring a collection bin to you! Please contact Jamalyn Peigh Williamson at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com for more info.

Car Wash Today Wash your car’s “sins” away at this morning’s Youth Car Wash. This fundraiser for the upcoming Peru work trip takes place all morning. Either drive your car through a washing station, OR park it in the “wash while I worship” section and pick it up after the service. Teens and adult leaders will be washing cars for any donation amount.

Sign Up for Dinner & a Movie Enjoy an evening hosted by the Committee on Inclusion and Social Justice on Saturday, June 29 at 5:30PM in Fellowship Hall. Watch the award-winning movie “The Help” and enjoy a pitch-in dinner of southern favorites. Fried chicken and beverages provided. Sign up today in the West Passage, or at www.stlukesumc.com (search “the help”).

The Track Summer Schedule Happening now: preschool and pre-k children (age 3 by 9/12 to those not yet in kindergarten) are invited to the Mini-Track for Sunday School classes at 9:30 & 11AM. Children who have completed kindergarten through 4th grade will attend the first part of worship with their families. After the Children’s Moment, they will be led by staff to a classroom for fun activities; pick up is in E106 or E108.

(9:30 & 11:00)

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare.

LEADER & PEOPLE:

We believe in the one God, maker and ruler of all things, the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love. We believe in Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength. We believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the life of love and prayer, and in grace equal to every need. We believe in the Word of God contained in the Old and New Testaments as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice. We believe in the Church as the fellowship, for worship and for service, of all who are united to the living Lord. We believe in the kingdom of God as the divine rule in human society, in the final triumph of righteousness, and in the life everlasting. Amen.

SCRIPTURE Acts 11:1-9 (NRSV) Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, saying, “Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?” Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I replied, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But a second time the voice answered from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, you must not call profane.’ SCRIPTURE RESPONSE READER: The word of God for the people of God.
