TODAY’S SPECIAL EVENTS

JULY 21, 2013

The following is a list of events occuring today at St. Luke’s. For other events and upcoming information, pick up a COMMUNION MONTHLY, available at the end of the pews and at the Information Desk in the Narthex.

The Track Summer Schedule Happening now: preschool and pre-k children (age 3 by 9/12 to those not yet in kindergarten) are invited to the Mini-Track for Sunday School classes at 9:30 & 11AM. Children who have completed kindergarten through 4th grade will attend the first part of worship with their families. After the Children’s Moment, they will be led by staff to a classroom for fun activities; pick up is in E106 or E108.

Summer Outreach St. Luke’s Outreach has committed to partner with Nora, Fox Hill, Springmill and Greenbriar Elementary Schools to help connect with the 75% of their students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. That is over 2,000 students in the area surrounding the church. To address this need, St. Luke’s will be hosting the “Back to School Extravaganza” at our church August 4. This event will provide school supplies, clothing, food and other services to these children. This is a large undertaking . . . so we are asking you to get involved by sponsoring a child for $25 to get them the supplies they need, or you can find a supply list at www.stlukesumc.com and bring donations to the main office. If your business would like to participate, let us know and we will bring a collection bin to you! Contact Jamalyn Peigh Williamson at williamsonj@stlukesumc.com for more info.

Quarterly Blood Drive St. Luke's Blood drive today in the Great Hall, from 8AM1PM. No appointment necessary, just drop in to make a life-saving gift.

NEWS YOU CAN USE Painters Needed! We're giving our children's area a new look, updating classrooms and hallways. We'll be painting one more session, July 29-Aug 16 and will need LOTS of volunteer painters! Sign up for any length of time (for a solid week, for one day each week, for a single day). Email David Williamson at williamsond@stlukesumc.com to indicate when you'd be willing to serve.

Special Needs Ministry St. Luke’s is committed to inclusive children’s ministry on Sunday mornings for all families. A Special Needs Ministry is being created to break down barriers that keep children with disabilities and their families from being able to fully participate in the life of the church. Would you like to volunteer to serve as a Special Needs Ministry Buddy? We've created a job description for a special needs volunteer for you to help us fulfill our purpose and provide an opportunity for children with special needs to learn about God's love in a way that is accessible to them—find it at www. stlukesumc.com/getinvolved/volunteer. For information,

email the Special Needs Coordinator at specialneeds@ stlukesumc.com. ••• Would a member of your family benefit from one-on-one attention during their time with us? Let us know how we can best serve you by contacting us at specialneeds @stlukesumc.com.

Men Only Grief Fellowship For men whose spouses have died in the past 1-3 years, a new MEN ONLY grief fellowship/support group has begun. Meets every Thursday from 3-4PM in Luke’s Lodge (behind the church). No registration. Come and get to know other men who share this journey. For information, please contact Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@stlukesumc.com.

Empty Nester’s Class The Empty Nester’s class will host a special program on the Shroud of Turin by Dr. Charles Dietzen, next Sunday, July 28 at 9:30AM in the Parlor. The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have suffered physical trauma in a manner consistent with crucifixion and is believed by some to be the burial cloth of Jesus. Dr. Dietzen will share information pertaining to the Roman practice of crucifixion as well as his thoughts regarding the Shroud of Turin. Guests are welcome.

Tomato Growers When bringing tomatoes for Fletcher Place, please leave them in the baskets by the garden doors.

Servant Day Join your St. Luke’s family in working together for the 5th Annual Servant Day as we reach out to our surrounding neighborhood on August 3 from 8AM–1PM. The day will begin with breakfast in the Great Hall, before teams will head out to serve throughout Pike and Washington Townships. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. Check out the diverse opportunities at the sign-up tables in the West Passage today and throughout July. You will also be able to sign up online at www.stlukesumc.com.

WELCOME and INVOCATION *HYMN

Charles Gounod Rev. David Williamson

“Ode to the Blessed Spirit”

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare.

LEADER & PEOPLE:

We believe in the one God, maker and ruler of all things, the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love. We believe in Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength. We believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the life of love and prayer, and in grace equal to every need. We believe in the Word of God contained in the Old and New Testaments as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice. We believe in the Church as the fellowship, for worship and for service, of all who are united to the living Lord. We believe in the kingdom of God as the divine rule in human society, in the final triumph of righteousness, and in the life everlasting. Amen.

*GLORY TO GOD

I know that you cannot tolerate evildoers; you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them to be false. I also know that you are enduring patiently and bearing up for the sake of my name, and that you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember then from what you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Yet this is to your credit: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers, I will give permission to eat from the tree of life that is in the paradise of God. John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
