The dictionary defines community as “a feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” But how do we explain the power of community and the feeling that we get from belonging, connecting and celebrating together? Communities make us strong and I’m thankful for the communities in my life – my family, friends, and of course, the outstanding, inclusive community here at the J! As JCC’s across the country are rocked with threats and feelings of isolation, we are also grateful for the outpouring of support and solidarity by our neighbors and friends all around the Twin Cities who share our vision for a safe, welcoming and inclusive world. At the St. Paul JCC, it is our privilege to play a significant role in your lives, providing countless opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect, learn, get fit and come together as part of a larger whole. This tradition will continue with our wide range of summer programming. But,

For 50 years, our JCC has stood on St. Paul Avenue as the heart and hub of our community. From newborns to youth and teens, to adults and active seniors, the St. Paul JCC is the primary destination for enriching programming, support services and opportunities to connect. We welcome everyone who enters our doors and each year, thousands of individuals and families embrace the St. Paul JCC as their home away from home.
Today our programming is stronger than ever – but simply put – our 50-year-old building is not.

jewish holidays YOM HASHOAH | APRIL 24 Yom HaShoah, known as “Holocaust Remembrance Day” in English, officially translates to “Remembrance Day for the Holocaust and Heroism.” It is an occasion to commemorate the lives and heroism of the six million Jewish people who died in the Holocaust between 1933 and 1945. YOM HAZIKARON | MAY 1 Yom Hazikaron is a day of memorial for those who lost their lives in the struggle that led to the establishment of the State of Israel and for all military personnel who were killed while in active duty in Israel’s armed forces. To commemorate the day, all places of public entertainment (theaters, cinemas, nightclubs, pubs, etc.) are closed in Israel from sunset to sundown. The most noticeable feature of the day is the sound of sirens that is heard throughout the country twice, during which the entire nation observes a two-minutes “standstill” of all traffic and daily activities.

YOM HA’ATZMAUT | MAY 2 Yom Ha’atzmaut is a joyful celebration of Israel’s independence. It is celebrated annually on the 5th day of Iyar, which in 1948 corresponded to May 14, the day on which David Ben Gurion, the nation’s first prime minister, announced the creation of the State of Israel. Yom Ha’atzmaut is celebrated both in Israel and in Jewish communities throughout the world.

SHAVUOT | MAY 31- JUNE 1 Shavuot, which means the “Festival of Weeks,” occurs seven weeks after Passover and commemorates the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, the harvesting of wheat in the land of Israel, and the ripening of the first fruits in Jerusalem. On Passover the Jews were freed from slavery; on Shavuot they were made into free people by receiving the Ten Commandments. Traditional foods for this holiday include blintzes, cheesecake, honey cake and other dairy dishes reminding us that the land of Israel is “flowing with milk and honey.” Reform Jews and Jews living in Israel observe the holiday for one day, while Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate the holiday for two days. TISHA B’AV | AUGUST 1 Tisha B’Av, a day of mourning, commemorates the tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people, many of which occurred on the ninth of Av (the 11th month of the Jewish calendar). Tisha B’Av commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, both of which were destroyed (by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E. and then by the Romans in 70 C.E.). It also commemorates other historical events that have occurred on this day, including the edict of King Edward I, compelling the Jews of England to leave the country in 1290, and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Instituted by the rabbis of 2nd-century Palestine, Tisha B’Av is regarded as the saddest day on the Jewish calendar.

APPLEBAUM AWARD 2017 The Roy Applebaum Memorial Award is presented each year for outstanding dedication to our Youth Basketball Program to someone who inspires children while teaching them the fundamentals of basketball, just like Roy Applebaum did many years ago. The JCC is proud to present Coach David Kehr with this year’s award for his extraordinary dedication to our league and its players. David has been involved at the JCC since he started playing in our basketball leagues when he was in kindergarten, and continued to play basketball competitively through junior high school. In 9th grade, David decided to give up competitive basketball so he could fully focus on golf; however, he didn’t walk away entirely from basketball. David showed remarkable maturity and decided to give back to the sport and our community by volunteering in our basketball leagues. David is now a senior in high school and has volunteered in our leagues for the last four years. He coaches in all four of our leagues, dedicating his time to be with the kids he coaches every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at the JCC. He is loved by his players and is respected by their parents and by his peers. Congratulations, David! We would also like to thank all of our Youth Basketball League volunteer coaches who generously gave their time and talent to this year’s season!

IT’S ABOUT TIME. TWO JCCS. ONE GREAT NIGHT! On December 3, 2016, close to 800 people from both sides of the river gathered together for the first-ever Twin Cities-wide JCC celebration of community. The evening included a community Havdalah, a surprise visit by Senator Amy Klobuchar, great schmoozing opportunities, and delicious food and drinks. To cap off the evening there was dancing to music by Prince cover band, The Purple Xperience and an interactive arts exhibit designed to foster deeper connections between individuals and our communities, across the room and across the river. The evening honored Etta & Mike Barry and Wendy & Steve Baldinger. St. Paul JCC and The Sabes JCC want to thank event co-chairs Cindy & Michael Garr, Laurie & Bruce Goldfarb, Lynn Lederman & Ken Raskin, Karee & Brad Lehrman and the wonderful committee who made It’s About Time, a night to remember!

St. Paul JCC Symphony Summer Orchestra Concert: Celebrating 90 Years of Music Wednesday, June 14 • 7:30 PM • FREE Please register in advance at stpauljcc.org or at the St. Paul JCC Front Desk The culmination of our 90th season celebration! The St. Paul JCC Symphony will perform the world premiere of a new work by local teen composer, Max Zelle, and works by Ferde Grofe and local composer Carol Barnett. The theme of “Past, Present and Future” runs throughout the concert as we celebrate the Symphony’s longstanding traditions and commitment to classical and Jewish music. Join Music Director and Conductor Amir Kats and get the inside scoop on the program at the Conductor’s Chat in the JCC Library prior to the performance at 7 PM. Reception to follow. “What an honor to be leading the St. Paul JCC Symphony as we celebrate nine decades of community members making music for the community! Please join us for this grand musical celebration!” – Conductor Amir Kats
“It’s an honor to write for a distinguished orchestra such as the St. Paul JCC Symphony, and it’s been great working with Amir Kats. The piece I have written draws on themes from the High Holy Days and is about reflection, repentance, and hope. A walk home alone on Yom Kippur gave me chance to reflect on my year, and gave me a sense of clarity that became the theme for the first movement of this piece.” – 15-year-old Composer, Max Zelle
Presented by the Marvin J. Pertzik Cultural Arts Department, which is generously supported, in part, by St. Paul JCC Endowment Funds. For a complete list of funds and their designated purpose, visit stpauljcc.org/our-endowment-funds/. Sponsored by JCC Association’s Making Music Happen Centennial Grant Initiative, funded by a grant from Marvin J. Pertzik and the Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
