Dear friends, Welcome to magical Serbia and in one of our most beautiful cities – the city of Novi Sad. The EXIT festival, National Tourism Organization of Serbia, with Tourism organizations of Novi Sad and Belgrade and the Serbian government have joined forces to bring you the best EXIT experiences ever. Along with your favourite artists at the Festival, we are giving you much more... We are turning the whole city of Novi Sad into a festival. There are the EXIT warm-up parties labelled ‘Get EXITed’ on Tuesday (6th) and Wednesday (7th) on several stages across the city. The parties will go on during the daytime on the days of EXIT with some of your favourite artists. And this is not all... In order to spread the party across Serbia, ‘After EXIT’ will continue with a festival in vibrant Belgrade (12thand 13th), which is officially declared as the world capital of fun (Lonely Planet, 2010). And all of this for free, the only thing you need to bring along is your smile... Let the fun begin.

Only 12 km or a 15-minute drive away from the centre of Novi Sad, one can find an authentic atmosphere of Vojvodina. Numerous Exit performers, such as beautiful Adriana Lima and many others have become fans of this leading Serbian hospitality complex. This is a peaceful place, where birds sing every day and it is warm and sunny even after the sunset. If you are tired of the busy city life and ‘fast food’, you will instantly fall in love with the atmosphere of our garden under the old walnut tree with the sound of tamburitza, thuds of horse hooves and an old carriage passing by.

16

Soon enough you will experience our concept of ‘slooow food’, which means savouring each mouthful of the good old homemade soup with noodles, juicy turkey with mlinci,‘salašarska daska’ (various delicatessen),

’čekić’ (prunes with cheese and bacon) and ‘police sa kajmakom’ (buns with cheese cream), which will smoothly fondle your palate.

Once you are full, you can relax in one of our old-fashioned rooms and then play some sports on the grass or on football or volleyball pitches, or even visit a riding school. We drink a toast and welcome you with a glass of homemade salaš wine!

THE METROPOLIS OF PARADOX AND FUN Welcome to Belgrade, ‘New York City of the Balkans’, the gate to the new world for Europeans and Asians. The place where Pannonia and the Balkans passionately kiss, clumsily dance Tango and constantly step on each other’s foot. Welcome to the metropolis of paradox, the largest Serbian city called ‘White’ despite the fact that it is grey. Physically, that is. You must have heard of this city by now. In time, you might feel the smell of gun powder and blood, on the one hand, and music and laugh on the other. The trifler of two million people, who persistently and honestly want to become gentlefolk. Everything is true and that is why we warmly recommend putting all the prejudices aside before you come to Belgrade. You do not have to clean your shoes. Moreover, there is no doormat. To say that Belgrade is a mixture of different cultures, traditions and styles is a tremendous underestimation of its potentials. This is the Garden of Eden for the talented and the stupid, the capable and lazy, the rich and the poor. Because of all that, people feel comfortable here. There is also a place for you somewhere. Mediocrity is not tolerated in this city and that applies to all of us. 46

Belgrade lies on two rivers and this magic is only shadowed by the fact that the city shies away from them, for inexplicable reasons. The Sava, the Danube and the White City form a curious love triangle, full of honest emotions and infantile misunderstandings, where rivers cannot explain to the city that they want more attention, not alimony. That is way you will visit the rivers mostly by night, when Belgrade importunately demonstrates its power. Intrusively and cosily, like cool guys. Another fact is that Belgrade is the capital of fun. Dullness is considered to be a death sin here by the mentality weld by centuries. As for the night life, the Serbian capital is similar to the ‘Exit Festival’. It has a stage for everyone’s taste. Without exaggeration, we can say that who did not have a great fun in Belgrade, simply was not in Belgrade. It is very easy to be a bohemian in Belgrade. If you are not a night bird, you can find fun in its traffic. The White City desperately needs a metro. Our legendary poet Duško Radović said once that thousands of Belgrade’s people have been under the dirt for a long time nervously expecting a train. Get armed with patience and do not hesitate to be politely unmannerly. The food is another story. If you like chicken you will get the top. If you are a vegetarian, forget the passers and holy geometry of law of probability, better ask ‘Google’ for advice. The fact that Belgrade is the gateway between the West and the East has endowed it with the glory of incomparable historical values. Those attracted by museums, galleries, remarkable objects, archaeological sites and other academic values, will have a possibility to see and to feel a lot. Cynics would say that Belgrade’s hedonistic pedigree throws a shadow on the other values and they would be right. Did we say that Belgrade has a fortress? It has, a beautiful one, all in blues and hurt. The fact that Belgrade is the crossroads of continental roads never helped it to profit by collecting the tools. Usually it was run over by foreign kingdoms and empires. With all its faults, Belgrade is a rarely unique city on the Planet. It is the hive where perhaps not all bees do their job but definitely make a good honey. The Balkans’ paradigm, the capital of paradox. Or is it one and the same?

FESTIVAL

FASHION From the Hippie Movement and Woodstock as the first big-scale gathering of people at a music event, fashion has always been something that follows both the event and represents the epoch itself. For the last 10 years, the Exit Festival has been the only place in this part of Europe that has gathered people from all over the world, all of them sharing the same passion - which is love of music and fun. We cannot think of a single music event, especially the one like Exit, without thinking about the current fashion trends and the wish to represent oneself in the best possible way. The variety that can be seen in Novi Sad during the festival days is something that cannot be forgotten and simply does not allow you to sleep after a crazy night spent at the festival, but lures you outside, to take on your favourite T-shirt and mingle with all those cheerful and smiling colourful people from all over the world. That is the very reason why we have created the T-shirts which will make you recognisable, which will represent not only your music and fashion taste, but you as well, like an urban person, the one who perceives life widely and who is a real Exit fan. Although there is a new fashion trend every year, the T-shirts are not trendy, they are always a message you carry about yourself, they are a memory of nice moments spent far away from home, they are a proof that you yourself were a member of a big and nice event such as the Exit Festival, like the view of the Danube from the Petrovaradin Fortress, as well as the walk through Novi Sad. Apart from T-shirts, other details that will distinguish you are jewellery or Exit pendants - ideal as a gift, but also a sign of belonging to a story that binds us together during these 4 days of the festival. Choose your T-shirt colour, the stage and music for this Exit, put a pendant around your neck, and give yourself to the rhythm and music emotions!

10 YEARS LATER…

A Hundred Days of Eldorado A summer that lacked ideas, the year was 2000, the time when Slobodan Milosevic’s rule was in full bloom, the time when the black fist broke the red five-pointed star and triggered an avalanche of the liberated mind. That evening of that meaningful year 2000, when the summer Exit festival blossomed on the wings of enthusiasm, no one could imagine that a manifestation of culture and resistance would become a festival of worldwide magnitude that would put Novi Sad on the world map for good. 1999 was an extremely gloomy year. It is enough to say NATO bombardment. Milosevic was in the full bloom of his presidency, and just another summer with no ideas was expected to fall upon this plain city, a city that seemed powerless, as it was bound by invisible strings of the powerful governing apparatus that suffocated it, leaving it with no breath of free will or life. However, a small forest near the Faculty of Philosophy was chosen as the location for ‘a’ festival, which was to last throughout the summer in the Athens of Serbia. A refreshment that came as God sent. The spectacle was called the ‘Exit Noise Summer Fest’ and it was planned to last for 100 days, which came true completely. While riding on the wave of the 1996 and 1997 student protests, a group of students, namely members of an independent student organization (The Student Union) realised that it was time to do something that would bring deep and permanent changes. A hundred days of a very interesting election campaign was ahead of us, a campaign that would change Novi Sad and entire Vojvodina. Dušan, Bojan, Dorijan, Miloš, Ivus, Goran, Rastko, Martin, and Bane sat down one night around the forbidden ‘camp fire’ and in the company of cold domestic beer started making the outline for the forthcoming cultural-social phenomenon. The Novi Sad’s creation was baptised and named - EXIT. For the young, it was supposed to represent an escape from the bitter, destructive, forced situation, while for the police, DB (State Security) and position lovers, Exit was masked and launched as a simple Saturday night on the town.

54

The hardest thing was to get started, to move the entire event from scratch, because only so many of them knew something about management, and even fewer had experience with lobbying politicians, persuading them to do the right thing. All those problems produced by the human factor were solved as they went along, and the Exit Noise Summer Fest was able to take off on June 29, 2000. During those 100 days Novi Sad was finally awake, and it was shining with that familiar spirit that arose from the dust. You could sense and see that something was different in Novi Sad. After such a surge of positive energy, even the DB was tired of all the ‘undercover’ night patrols, which sort of spontaneously turned into socialising and drinking cold beer. On the closing day, during the election silence, the stand of young people was heard. It will remain in the memories of everyone that the closing night of EXIT, just two days before the elections, went on without a single raindrop, while the rest of Serbia was storm stricken. God himself watched over Novi Sad. That year 2000, about 200 000 cheerful people walked through the little forest, the beach and the promenade, feeling that they were finally awake, determined to go and vote. After the successful year 2000, which first brought Exit, and then broke the dictatorship of the cruel Miša, Exit took little but firm steps towards becoming a Serbian brand. What happened from that moment on is the most wonderful history that is passed on from ‘knee to knee’, and there was really no better way to step into the 21st century in Novi Sad than this one. It is the city that earned this privilege, with all its kind and peaceful citizens. Dejan Ignjić

Airport Coaches Let us paint the picture for you: Your plane lands at the airport, you have to seek alternative means of transportation that will take you to the nearest bus or train station, and you wait for the first available ride, stopping at every single station. It costs you a lot of money, time, and not to mention your nerves and patience. With us, your arrival and return is just ‘slightly’ different. First of all, you do all your planning ahead. Second, you pay a lot less. Third, you don’t waste valuable time on all the waiting and hold-ups. Fourth, you directly arrive where you’re supposed to be.
