Old Collegians’ Association _______________________Page

2014 was another fantastic year for the Old Collegians’ Association. At the AGM of 2014 the following committee was elected: Justin O’Brien - President John Fitzgerald – Senior Vice President Sam Hopgood – Junior Vice President Sam O’Dwyer – Treasurer Nick Jahnecke – Administrative Officer General Committee Members - Joe Virgona, Dean Bushell, Roger Hardwick, David McCusker, Greg Thompson, Andrew Conte, Nick Cooper and Alex Kelly. On Sunday 9 February the Annual St Joseph’s College Old Collegians’ Golf Day was held at 13th Beach Golf Links Barwon Heads. Just under 200 players took to the beautifully maintained Links course, in an Ambrosestyle team competition. In what were hot and windy conditions, many players made extremely hard work of the day. Overall a great day was had by all teams. Overall winners on the day were the team comprising of Alan Hogan, Josh Dempsey, Ryan Goosen, Cam Mernone and Paul Cumper. They won the playoff hole against the team from 63 Degrees; comprising of Simon Bryant, Jono Bryant, Adam Walters, Daniel Walsh and Grant Sutherland.

The Annual Golf Day is a major fundraiser for our Old Collegians with all money generously raised going towards the St Joseph’s College Bursary Fund. Many thanks to all the players and sponsors of the Golf Day. The Annual Reunion held at the College in May had over 200 Old Collegians attend. The night is always filled with great memories and laughs from times past. The reunion for the 5 year and 1 year groups was held at Lamby’s on the same night. This was a trial and next year we will revert back to having everyone at the College. The Melbourne Reunion was held in October at the Emerald Hotel, South Melbourne. Over 50 past students attended and made a great night of it. Many thanks to Jane Lewis and all the staff at the Emerald Hotel. The Remembrance Mass was held in November in the College Chapel, afterwards those in attendance enjoyed afternoon tea in the College staffroom. The committee has done a wonderful job in raising funds and investing wisely over a number of years and currently has in excess of $400,000 in investments. We have decided this year to contribute $250,000 to the Westcourt Campus Chapel Project. The building of the Chapel will commence in 2015 and will be located near the corner of Minerva Road and Douglas Street. It is hoped that the project will be completed during the middle of the school year. The project has also received a gift of $100,000 from another past student of the College. Anthony Balsasso of ‘Baldasso Corese Architects’ designed the space free of charge, and another past student Adam Gleeson of ‘A Gleeson Constructions Pty Ltd’ will be the builder. This is a project the old Collegians can be proud to be associated with. It was sad to hear the news of the resignation of David Formosa; David’s contribution and involvement with the Old Collegians’ Association has been enormous. We have been very lucky to have David work with us and we sincerely thank him for his efforts whilst he has been at the College. We wish him all the best in his new role in Melbourne. It is with great pleasure that we welcome Kristen Gleeson who replaces David in this role. I am sure Kristen will follow on from the great work of David and we wish him all the best.

John Fitzgerald has resigned as Vice-President due to other commitments. John has been a valuable member of the committee for many years. We would like to thank him for his leadership, ideas and the time he has dedicated to making the SJOCA a success. Thank you to all committee members for their dedicated commitment to the Association and to St Joseph’s.

Justin O’Brien - President
