The transition from the familarlarity of primary school to secondary school provides a unqiue set of challenges faced by all students as they adapt to their new school. The 2014 Year 7 Cohort at St Joseph’s College have taken advantage of the huge array of activities that allow students to interact with and meet new people, develop friendships and find acitivites that value add to the educational programs. The Year 7 Student Leadership Team have been able to reflect on some of these experiences in 2014.

ATHLETICS DAY

Athletics day was one of the best days of the year. I had been looking forward to it and it was way better than I thought. It had a wide variety of sports from running, high jump, shotput and some more running. You don’t just get points for winning events you also get them for cheering and competing. So you didn’t have to be the best at every activity. Seeing all the amazing talents was also great.

You move around the school to each activity as a House group which was great for making new friends. It was amazing watching the 100m race because you can watch the fastest people in the school race against each other. Athletics day was one of the best days of the year because of all the fun and competitive activities.

In May we went to camp Myrnigyong near Bacchus Marsh. As the bus stopped everybody rushed to the courtyard, we put our bags away the fun began. The activities at camp were fun for everyone, there was Orienteering, Geo tracking, Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, bike riding and so much more. The best activity was by far the flying fox, we got told that the length of it was 170m long which is the length of the MCG. The whole idea of camp was to meet new friends and challenge ourselves. It was a great experience and definitely the highlight of the year.

On 17 March the College celebrated our own Eddie Rice Day. The day kicked off with a brisk 4.5km run along the river. Activities around the school consisted of a ‘slip n slide,’ sumo wrestling, Xbox tournaments, chalk drawing, water balloon slingshots, gladiator battles and lucky dips. When the boys weren’t at these there was also the fantastic music entertainment played by multiple school bands. The College raised a spectacular total of $47,900 for the village of Mannya in Uganda, that is going to make hundreds of people’s lives a higher quality than they ever would have imagined.

TRIUMPH started with a bang, literally! With the mayor of Geelong Darren Lyons addressing all four of the schools involved (St Josephs, Sacred Heart, Clonard and St. Ignatius). TRIUMPH was a day to raise money and awareness for poverty in East Timor and also to enjoy great music, great food and a great time with our friends. Throughout the day there were markets and stalls who sold delicious foods. The highlight was the music stations around the school, from the chill out stage, to the main stage and to the electric stage. It was a great day of festivities, being with our friends and listening and dancing to great music.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

On 12 February St Joey’s held their Swimming Carnival with points for the Adam Bryant Shield up for grabs. It was our first year and the excitement was up. Drew Green won the Under 13s 50m freestyle and breaststroke events. Joel Lewis also won the Under 13 backstroke, showing that the Butler boys had some upcoming stars. The older year levels proved too strong for the young butler boys which led to Foley taking the victory by only 30 points over Butler. Behind all the competition there was quite a bit of fun involved with us being able to have access to the diving boards and water slides. Our first Swimming Carnival – a successful and enjoyable one too!

All the classes went to the beach to play some games and other activities. All the boys also had the chance to surf. There was a range of different things from team games and personal activities. The surfing was awesome and a great experience to all the boys that had never given surfing a go. The Beaches we went to where Cosy Corner and Bancoora. It was a great day and I am sure that all the boys would have enjoyed it.
