2014 has been a very full yet rewarding year for the St Joseph’s College Music Department. The tour to Canberra, the ACCent on Music Concert in Hamer Hall and the Production ‘All Shook Up’ stand out as highlights. Our tour to Canberra in May saw the Stage Band and Intermediate Bands receive Gold Awards for their performances at the Australian

National Eisteddfod. The Senior Band, performing in the A Grade

Section, received a Silver Award. As well as performing the boys were able to visit both houses of Parliament and the War

Memorial. The mock debate held in the Old Parliament House of Representatives was a lively affair, which demonstrated much debating prowess amongst our musicians.

Many trips to Melbourne as well as one full rehearsal at home culminated in The Associated Catholic Colleges Accent on

Music Concert. The opportunity to perform in one of Australia’s foremost concert venues with one of Australia’s iconic musicians

James Morrison, was indeed a once in a lifetime opportunity which will hopefully inspire our boys to even greater heights musically.

Our Senior Band performed very well and our representatives in the combined Choir, Junior Band, Senior Band and Jazz Band all performed with distinction. The combined Jazz Band was lead by Mr John Shawcross. The production of ‘All Shook Up’ in August saw many musicians involved either onstage or in the orchestral pit. The commitment of students and staff to the production was superb, considering that all other music groups kept rehearsing and performing during this busy period. Strong performances were delivered by all the lead actors, while the ensemble grew in strength in each performance. We were delighted with the improvement in the Band throughout the process, many of whom were performing in their first production. The Vocal Ensemble has enjoyed working with Miss Tania Spence this year. As well as performing at all the School Music Concerts, Masses and Special Assemblies, the boys have once again participated in Citizenship Ceremonies for the Geelong City Council. We thank the Year 12 boys Ryan Bentley, Thomas Howell, Liam Monagle, Christopher Napper and David Van Etten for their dedicated support of the Vocal Ensemble over their time at St Joseph’s College. ‘Up in Arms’ were winners of the Edstock Battle of the Bands competition held as part of Edmund Rice Day. The Band also took out the group prize later in the year.

YEAR 9 MUSIC PERFORMANCE

The year 9 music enrichment class have participated in many performances this year. Students have composed their own music and performed in many different styles and settings. Highlights for 2014 include a Celtic set at the reception for the opening of the Westcourt campus, ANZAC day commemoration where students performed Green Fields of France for special guests, teachers and fellow students, a song writing workshop with special guest musician/songwriter Justin Gall and an excursion to the Open Air Music Festival at The Gordon for Mental Health week.

Cast & Crew of ‘All Shook Up’

SJC’S ‘ALL SHOOK UP’ NOMINATED FOR 5 STATE AWARDS!

44 College Productions were reviewed by the judges this year and SJC’s “All Shook Up” has been nominated for the following five awards in the junior section of the Music Theatre Guild Of Victoria:

Junior Production Of The Year

Direction Of A Junior Production – Janine McLean Musical Direction Of A Junior Production – John Shawcross/Michael Wilding Junior Male Performer In A Leading Role – Ryan Bentley

Junior Male Performer In A Supporting Role – David Van Etten

To be nominated for these awards is a reflection of the skill and dedication of all the Production Team and the Cast who worked so hard to reach a great level. To be nominated in so many categories against some “heavyweight”

Colleges, is in itself a great reward for all involved.

I am sure there will be good news on 13 December when the Awards are announced, but to be nominated in so many categories against some “heavyweight” Colleges, is in itself a great reward for all involved.

Congratulations to the Company of All Shook Up!

David Gallaher
