The St Joeys team has had a short history full of success and the squad of 38 boys were keen to keep the success going. Our tilt at the 2014 ACC premiership started with a road trip to Mazenod after a term of hard work putting together a game plan that would stand up against the competition. With Mr Holt and Mr Lynch putting the game plan together and the group brining the hard work we were ready for the season. After getting the win against Mazenod in the wet, we played our first home game. In wet and slippery conditions the boys got the win after being challenged by St Bede’s. Over the next two weeks we would play some of our best footy with a big win over St. Bernard’s at home and a great win at De la Salle, again in wet conditions. The following week would be a wake-up call for the group with Parade getting the jump on us and a big last quarter not being enough to get over the line. The loss to Parade would set up an elimination final against Whitefriars. Without our skipper Jack Blood, a win would secure a grand final birth and a home final on percentage. A loss would be the end of our season. After an inspirational speech from Mr Holt the group played some of its best footy against a quality opposition. We broke the game open playing our best footy for the year to run away with a five goal victory. The grand final would be played in perfect conditions at Elderslie Reserve against Parade. The group was challenged by Parade and responded, putting together some of our best footy for the year and taking out the premiership in front of a healthy and supportive home crowd.

Capping off a great season with big grand final performances Jack Henry and Jono Arcoraci were joint Best and Fairest winners. Will Cann and Sam Simpson were Runner-Up Best and Fairest winners and Paddy Dowling took out the Coach’s Award. On behalf of the group I’d like to thank Mr Holt and Mr Lynch for coaching the group and getting us up each week, I’d also like to thank Lenny Alford, Mick Hinds and Lachy Porter for all of the time and effort they put into the program to make it a success once again.

The senior football team for 2014 saw a group of boys that were even, skilful and very talented. The side was unsure about how far they could go but, as the season went on, quickly realised that they had a lot of potential. The first game sent a message that St Joseph’s was a real contender with a solid 38 point win over St Bede’s. An epic start to the season.

After starting down against a tough Parade side in Round 2, Mr Holt (filling in for Mr Clohesy) got us in line and making all the right moves in the final quarter, the team kicked 4 goals within 4 minutes with a vital goal by Jacko McLachlan stealing the win.

Round 3 was our first home game against St Bernard’s competing for the Reconciliation Cup. In front of a big crowd we prevailed leaving the team 3-0 and playing with plenty of confidence and run.

Fresh off the bye the team was excited, with an undefeated season we continued the winning streak for the next two rounds leaving us 5-0 with powerful wins over De La Salle by 131 points and a 51 point win over Mazenod.

Going into the final game we had already wrapped up a spot in the

Grand Final. This provided the chance for several sore players to have a rest and for some others to have a crack at senior footy. Unfortunately Whitefriars were too good on the day - our first loss of the season and ultimately decided that we would be playing Whitefriars for the Grand Final. The Grand Final was held at Elsternwick Park in Melbourne. With Whitefriars in the first quarter stacking on 5 goals to our 0. We kicked into gear in the second half and gave it our all, but the early lead that Whitefriars set up was too much. We fought out the game and held our heads high but unfortunately it was all over as Whitefriars took the game out by 32 points. I would like to congratulate Nick Swain for taking out the Best and Fairest award and Vice-Captain James Hickey who was runner up. Other awards went to Max Augerinos, Casey Meehan, Damian McMahon and Jacko McLachlan who all had fantastic seasons. Congratulations to Max Augerinos, Harrison Kol, Nick Swain and Damian McMahon on being selected in the ACC Team of the Year. I’d like to thank our coaches Mr Clohesy, Mr Holt and Ian Durran. Thanks also to the team helpers Mick Hinds, Lenny Alford, Greg Vaughn, Mr Dawson and Mr Milverton. I would also like to thank the players who commit each week on top of playing weekend footy because they just love to play footy for their school. Finally to the extended team that support, run water, boundary and goal umpire each game – without you there is no game. Even though we didn’t have Grand Final success, we played as a team for the season and had a great time. I wish all Year 10 and 11 boys success next year, hopefully they can go one better!

St Joseph’s Football & Netball Club

The club approached the 2014 season full of confidence on and off the field. With senior football coach Heath Jamieson into his second year of developing young players and the implementing of his game plan, improvement would come quickly. Indeed it did, with the senior 2 o’clock side losing just 4 games by a total of some 22 points. A third on the ladder position with a mighty first final win was a fair result. The 2014 season was another step in the right direction and we again look to build on this in 2015. For our Colts teams at season beginning, we all thought it would be a long year. However, in what is a credit to everyone involved, both our Division 1 and 4 sides had terrific seasons. To have the Division 1 side 20pts in front in a preliminary against Premiers St Marys was a mighty effort. Some very good and long term players will develop out of these teams. Our netball division, with new head coach Sandi Demasi, went from strength to strength. Sandi and her team were able to mould a very young group into an A grade team that made finals, an outstanding achievement. Congratulatiuons to our D grade team who captured the 2014 title, a wonderful effort by all involved when they lost their first final and had to do it the “hard way”. Off field, we thank our three major sponsors, Interpack, Signature Homes and Tri-core Matrix, and also all our other sponsors whose support has been greatly appreciated. It is important that club members and supporters look to use these businesses where possible. Thank you to our sponsorship subcommittee - Kel Purser, John Goldsworthy and Brett Bentley for a job well done. It was probably the biggest year in infrastructure since 2004, with the building of our 2 netball courts and light towers as well as having nets behind the goals placed at the cemetery end of Drew and Walker reserves. Our clubs contribution of almost $100,000 along with a significant financial input from COGG allowed these projects to be completed. Janine Nicholls and her team have been hard at work organising most of our social functions. From the season’s launch through to ladies lunch, the Gala Ball to the Presentation night along with many other events. To Janine and her team - thank you, organising functions can be a thankless task, but brings so much to our club. This year’s Season’s Launch in March, was organised and hosted by the incredibly generous Old Collegian Nick Maxwell. Held at the Westpac centre with special guests Eddie McGuire, Brownlow medallist Dane Swan and past player and NFL punter Sav Rocca. Nick Maxwell does a lot of work with the Michael Carmody Foundation. This year we decided to merge our Gala Ball and the Michael Carmody Foundation’s function. The night was a success and we appreciate the support of all who donated and attended, it is hoped we can turn the event into a signature annual event for both our school and club community. The Grand Final eve lunch held at The Pier, with approximately 720 people in attendance, was again significant. Thanks to Brett Bentley, John McKinnon and Joe Kiss for helping run what must be regional Australia’s biggest Grand Final function. To all of the hard working committee, who continue to put in the many volunteer hours required to run this Club, I extend a big thank you. To survive and prosper these days at this level, we continually have to become more professional. Having said that, the good in people that makes them want to volunteer, is something I am always in awe of, and is the foundation on which clubs like ours are built. Our supporters groups, Club 32 and the On-Ballers, had a record breaking fundraising year, thank you for your generous support. The players have again been exemplary in their attendance and behaviour at club functions this year. To our football and medical department who put in an enormous effort behind the scenes. Your work is valued and appreciated. To all teams who competed this year, congratulations on your efforts and the way you have conducted yourself. The club is looking to build on very solid foundations and will continue to work tirelessly. In the coming two years we are focused and committed to improving our facilities. This will include netball and football coaches boxes, change rooms and football score board. We look to the next year and beyond with excitement as we strive to continue to build on The Joey’s Way...Go Joeys.
