Round one of the Victorian College Championships was held at the Werribee Stadium. This year the VCC introduced divisions in the junior section. At SJC we have a good number of boys who play representative basketball so the 2014 Junior team played in Division 1. On the day of the first round the boys won four of their six games. The only teams they lost to were eventual grand finalists and specialist sport schools. So overall, they were a highly competitive group playing in the top division, who performed well in all their games. The SJC Intermediate team entered the VCC tournament in Division 2 as only some of the team were playing representative basketball in 2014. This team had good amount of success this year. They qualified for the State Finals day as they went through Round 1 undefeated. At the Finals day at MSAC, they lost only their first game to the eventual champions. The way the competition worked this meant semi-finals were not possible. Nevertheless, they won all their remaining games and therefore finished fifth in the State. A solid effort. In 2014, this team played ten games and only lost once, a great achievement. The senior boys also played in Division 2 of the VCC competition. Their preliminary rounds were held at MSAC. They managed to get enough wins to progress to the State Finals, also held at MSAC. The boys played some good basketball on the Finals day but couldn’t reach the semi-finals. Overall, winning some of their remaining games and finishing seventh. The boys were unlucky not to have Tom Doedee play due to injury. A special thanks to Kurt Tremain, Mark Delapaz, Jake Smith and Matthew Milanovic. These four boys have represented SJC in basketball for their entire time at the College. Their sportsmanship and enthusiasm throughout has been outstanding. Finally, I would like to thank Mr. Bryson Milverton, Sportsmaster, for his continued support and assistance with all our SJC basketball teams.
