ACCent on Music at Hamer Hall with special guest James Morrison.

DON’T MISS OUT ON APPEARING IN THE COLLEGE YEARBOOK

Principal’s Report Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College, Welcome to the final school term for 2014. As mentioned in the previous newsletter once all Triumph expenses had been paid the final fundraising amount could be reported. I am pleased to announce that the total raised for the variety of ministries in Timor was $60,000. Congratulations to all involved. During the final week of Term 3, I attended the Associated Catholic Colleges Accent on Music concert at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall. In its early years the ACC’s focus was on sport. As time has gone on the association has embraced a wide range of endeavours including debating and public speaking as well as the creative arts and music. This night showcased music excellence from accross 10 Associated Catholic College schools. St Joseph’s was well represented with David Gallaher conducting our Senior Band and John Shawcross conducting the ACC Combined Stage Band which included special guest James Morrison. The night was a wonderful showcase of music talent accross the ACC schools. Towards the end of this month the annual Ad Alta Virtute Magazine will be distributed to all families. In the magazine, I have written a detailed article in relation to capital developments at Newtown and Westcourt over the next two years. This article provides important information to all families about proposed future developments and I encourage you to read it carefully. Paul Tobias - Principal Compassion Innovation Integrity

RETURN PHOTO PERMISSION FORMS Due to changes in privacy legislation we now require a signed permission form for every student in order to use their photo for College-related material. This includes the College newsletter, website, SJC Facebook page,Virtus (College end of year magazine) etc. This means that students without forms returned will NOT be able to appear in the College yearbook AT ALL - no class photo, no photos at events etc. These permission forms were distributed via Homeroom teachers and were due back last term. However, there are still many forms yet to be returned. We ask that you please assist us in this by ensuring your son returns his signed permission form ASAP. A link to download the form is included in the Newsletter webmail. Or CLICK HERE to download a copy. Zara Walter - Office Manager

News from the Deputies We would like to extend a warm welcome back to our final term of the year and we hope that all our families enjoyed the Term 3 holidays. Term 4 will be another busy time at St Joseph’s with a number of key events taking place. We will be farewelling our Year 12 students at a whole school assembly on Monday 13 October which is only a week before their scheduled final day here. Monday 20 October is the final day for all Year 12 students which will be celebrated that evening with a light dinner and Graduation Mass. Our Investiture of Leaders ceremony is taking place on Thursday 23 October which is always a fabulous event and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students who were elected by their peers to these important positions. We certainly look forward to formally recognising them in front of the entire school population as well as their families. We would also like to wish our Year 9 students who are travelling to St Brendan’s College Yeppoon a safe and enjoyable time in Queensland. This trip takes place during week 2 of this term. UNIFORM Term 4 sees the return of the summer uniform so students can opt for shorts and the summer shirt and can leave the tie and blazer at home. Please be mindful that if students do elect to continue to wear their winter uniform then the tie and blazer remain compulsory uniform items. Claire Brown & Paul Clohesy - Deputy Principals

What goes on in the Holidays... WORLD PEACE DAY World Peace Day is marked on 21 September each year. This year, Archbishop Desmond Tutu prayed for the rights of Aboriginal peoples in Australia. It seems unlikely that a person of such repute from a country with ongoing issues as South Africa would know about and comment on such issues as those facing Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. But his prayer demonstrates his understandings of the issues, his compassion for all those who are marginalized and his belief in justice and solidarity for all. His prayer is attached at the end of the newsletter. REFUGEE HOLIDAY PROGRAM Over the holidays we hosted 108 children from families who arrived in this country as refugees. The children were Iranian, Afghan, Congolese, Karen & Karenni and a variety of other nationalities. Some have been in the country 3-4 years and others 2-3 months. Approximately 100 students from Sacred Heart, Clonard, St Ignatius and St Joseph’s Colleges lead the guests through a number of fun and creative activities and shared a BBQ lunch. Many thanks to the wonderful staff who also assisted on the day. Below are photos of just some of the fun that was had. Jo Hart - Director of Identity

Cassel Family Appeal Many in our local community have been shocked by the tragedy that occurred early last week in Newcomb. On Tuesday, a tragic house fire claimed the life of Dimi Cassels, (former Christ the King student and current Year 7 student, St Ignatius College). Dimi’s grandmother and two younger brothers were saved from the fire by the actions of two spontaneous heroes. The ferocity of the fire destroyed all of the family’s possessions. To support this family, a member of our parish community, we are encouraging people to give to the appeal which has been set up. Ongoing financial support is needed and appreciated. A Bendigo Bank account has been set up to enable this support to be provided. If you would like to support this appeal, you can deposit directly into Cassels Family Support Fund (BSB: 633 000, Acct:152954871). Also, gift vouchers can be left at Christ the King Primary School, Newcomb. Students and staff at the College will be given the opportunity to donate to this appeal through their homerooms this week. Jo Hart - Director of Identity

Sustainability Matters VERTICAL GARDEN BED – WESTCOURT On Tuesday 7 October, Mrs Liz Keck (Activities Officer, Bunnings Waurn Ponds), joined Mr Pillai’s Year 9 Planet Green class, to commence the construction of a Vertical Herb Garden bed at Westcourt. As participants of Planet Ark’s, Tree Day and in conjunction with the 2014 Science Week theme “Food for our future”, the focus of our sustainability projects this year has been “food” and “planting styles” for the future. The Vertical garden bed was our third project, following a “refresh” of our sustainable water station/garden bed and the implementation of an Aquaponics tank at Main Campus. On completion, the herb garden will comprise of 32 recycled plastic bottle planter boxes, suspended vertically on wire, all encased in a merbau timber frame. We would like to thank Liz Keck sincerely for her time in coordinating all materials and Bunnings, Waurn Ponds for their sponsorship of our Planet Ark, Tree Day project. YEAR 7 BREAD CLIP COMPETITION - PLEASE SAVE YOUR BREAD CLIPS! Could I remind and encourage families to keep collecting your bread clips as the competition will commence for Year 7 students next week. For the safety of children, parents are reminded to take care and obey parking signs when picking up or dropping off children around schools. Council’s Parking & Information Officers regularly patrol school areas during start and finish times and motorists detected breaching parking regulations risk being issued with a Penalty Infringment Notice. Remember, as soon as you stop to let your children in or out of the car, you are deemed to be parked. You do not have to leave your car or turn the engine off to be fined. Please be aware that the yellow lines marked on Queens Road designate “No Stopping” zones. For the safety of students, families and drivers please do not stop on the yellow lines in Queens Road. At children’s crossings, you must remain stationary at the stop line while any person (including an adult or the supervisor) is on the crossing or the stop sign is displayed. Do not let your child alight at this time, but ensure that they wait until you are safely and legally parked. If you breach parking regulations the Parking & Information Officer assigned to monitor the crossing will usually record your registration number and details and the Penalty Infringement Notice will be posted to the registered owner of the vehicle within the next three days.

ACCent on Music Wrap Up The Associated Catholic Colleges celebrated its largest and most spectacular musical showpiece at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne, on Wednesday 17 September, in what will no doubt be a very memorable experience for all involved. Ten of our member schools were represented, with all schools involved in showcasing an individual school item as well as being involved in the various combined ACC ensembles. We were fortunate to have James Morrison involved in our event as a special guest performer and compere for the evening. James performed with five of the combined ACC ensembles, playing alongside some of our most talented musicians. He engaged the audience with some wonderful stories from his extensive list of musical experiences, as well as passing on some excellent words of wisdom for our young performers. We are indebted to James for his generosity and his enthusiasm. ACC COMBINED SCHOOL ITEMS There were a variety of ACC combined ensembles on the program, including the Junior Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, Orchestra, Choir and Stage Band. These ensembles were conducted by various ACC staff members and were a wonderful example of the collaboration between all of our schools. James Morrison also performed with these ensembles, which will be a treasured memory for the students involved. INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL ITEMS Each school was able to showcase one of their most outstanding ensembles, with an impressive variety on offer across the program. CBC St. Kilda, Latin Ensemble - a Santana medley De La Salle, Guitar Ensemble - “Somebody That I Used To Know” Emmanuel, VET Music Students -“Waiting on the World to Change” Mazenod, Symphony Orchestra - “Sinatra” Parade, Jazz Ensemble -“Blues in Hoss’s Flat” Salesian, Stage Band -“Brooklyn” St. Bede’s, Drum Line - “Bigfoot” St. Bernard’s, Concert Band & Choir -“Hey Jude” St Joseph’s, Senior Concert Band -“Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo” Whitefriars,VCE Rock Band & Global Rhythm Ensemble - a Santana Medley Each of these items was introduced by a representaitve from a different school. FINALE One of the major highlights of the performance was the finale, with the ACC Senior Concert Band and massed choir all on stage together. This involved over 400 boys and it was a magnificent way to conclude what was an outstanding evening of entertainment. Paddy McKenna - ACC Executive Officer www.sjc.vic.edu.au
