Principal’s Report Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College, The week just gone has been a busy one with the departure of the Year 12 group on Monday and Graduation Mass Monday evening. This was followed by the Year 7 Parent Information evening for 2015 on Tuesday evening and the Investiture of Leaders for 2015 on Thursday. Congratulations to the following students who have accepted positions of leadership for 2015.
Thank you to parents who were part of the focus groups for the review of our Westcourt Campus. Educational consultant Mr John Marks has undertaken a formal review of the new Campus and structures and will deliver a final report in a couple of weeks. I will be absent from the College from 7 November to 2 December undertaking some enrichment leave. Mr Paul Clohesy will be the Acting Principal in my absence. Paul Tobias - Principal

News from the Deputies The Year 12 students were farewelled by the school community during our full school assembly held on Monday 13 October. The event included a range of musical and comedy acts by our talented Year 12 cohort as well as some inspirational words of wisdom delivered by our College Captains. Without doubt, however, the highlight of the event was the ‘Flash Mob’ dance lead by Mrs Monika Ercoli and Mrs Leah Irving to the song ‘Eye of the Tiger’. Celebration Day for the Year 12 boys included a shared lunch, parade through the quad, afternoon tea with the staff as well as an enjoyable year level assembly and comedy act. Families joined the students and staff for some dinner prior to the Graduation Mass which was a fantastic and fitting way for the boys to formally conclude their schooling here at St Joseph’s. With only days left before the VCAA examination period begins with their English exam, we would encourage families of Year 12 boys to encourage the boys to dedicate themselves to their study and make use of the expertise of their teachers who will be available to them during their regular class times up until their exam is completed. Another event that recently took place and is worth highlighting was the Year 10 Renewal. The Year 10 cohort was split in two with students experiencing a range of activities during the two days of the program. Personal development programs were run at the College and included a driver safety program from VicRoads titled ‘Keys Please’, an emotional presentation about making good decisions about driving and traveling in cars titled ‘Carmen’s Road Safety’ as well as a presentation on the dangers of risk taking behaviour called ‘Party Safe’. We would like to thank all the staff involved in putting the renewal days together particularly John Harmon and the Identity Team as well as Simon Taylor and Cassandra Coogan in their roles as Year 10 Coordinator. Detention for Detention WE ARE THE CHANGE! To educate our students to be aware of the world around them and the injustices within it, to be empowered to seek to change these and so liberate others. This is what 115 students and staff were aiming for on Friday. The issue of asylum seekers is so complex, so diverse. It has dominated headlines for the better part of a decade, with almost all of us destined to form our own opinion on the matter. In many respects, it has become a political football that has for so long put popular opinion before what is truly right. … However through the act of standing in solidarity we are not proclaiming what we believe to be the best political agenda. We are not part of a debate about what is the best solution for such an issue. We are simply humans, standing hand in hand with other humans. With our brothers and sisters who also walk this planet. Showing them that they are not alone in their path to safety. That they are so much more than just an issue, so much more than a problem. We are not the cause, nor are we the solution. But we are the change that we wish to see in the world. The Detention for Detention event had the full support of EREA. Mr Wayne Tinsey spoke on 2GB radio to explain the initiative. In a statement from EREA, he wrote that “this initiative is an important opportunity for students to participate and make commentary on policy in the light of the Gospel and from their own perspective as informed members of our society and future leaders”, said Dr. Wayne Tinsey, Executive Director, Edmund Rice Education Australia. Advocacy is the amplification of those voices who are not being heard. Friday’s action was aimed at highlighting the problem of human rights, namely freedom and voice, being so shamefully undermined by current policy.I congratulate those students and staff who gave up their lunchtime to stand up for and stand with those children who remain in detention. Congratulations To Matthew Teale (Year 7) on his selection to represent Victoria Country Basketball in the Southern Cross Challenge. This is a national competition where Victoria will verse all other states in Australia including New Zealand. Matthew was one of only 20 junior athletes in U15 boys’ age group to be selected to make two teams. The competition will be held at Wantirna, Melbourne in January 2015. Congratulations Matthew and we wish you every success in your endeavours!
Lachlan Grant’s bus shelter design entry
Visual Communication Design Recently two of our Year 11 Visual Communication Design students Michael Tolj and Lachlan Grant entered the competition for design ideas for a bus shelter for Deakin’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. They both developed innovative designs that met the criteria well. The comment from the organiser was ‘All entries received were of an exceptionally high standard. They were judged by the panel noted in the competition terms and conditions on Monday 6 October 2014’. Congratulations to Lachlan Grant whose submission was selected as the first runner up in the competition. For his efforts he won $1000. Helen Kean - Visual Communication Design Teacher
The City of Greater Geelong Youth Development Unit in conjunction with the Victorian Police, Headspace and Dialogue Consulting are delivering cyber bullying training to students, teachers and parents across the Geelong region. Our school has booked a student session which will be followed up with a parent session at night. There is no cost and supper will be served. Geelong Outreach Van The Geelong Outreach Van is slowly becoming a regular feature on Geelong streets on Wednesday and Sunday nights. It aims to provide social interaction, food and other necessities to people who are experiencing poverty, homelessness or isolation. SJC has a growing group of students and staff who are involved in the Sunday night van. As it is in the very early life of the van, a night can vary from seeing no-one to seeing 6 people. However, to establish the van we need to be prepared to feed and welcome whomever we meet every week. At this stage, and knowing that the van can’t stop simply because we go on Christmas holidays, I’d like to invite members of our College community to be involved. Involvement could take place in a number of ways: • Volunteering on the van on a Sunday night from 6.309.30pm (could be a once-off or something more regular), • Making soup (we currently need about 2ltrs per night) • Providing sandwich fillings for rolls/sandwiches to be made up on the night. I encourage you to consider participating in the Outreach Van project. Unfortunately, due to the possibility of safety issues, only people Year 11 and above can volunteer on the van. For all new volunteers, a short orientation session will be held immediately prior to going out on the van. There will be an information session at 7pm in the Main campus staffroom on Thursday 6 November. If you wish to attend, you must rsvp to jo.hart@sjc.vic.edu.au to ensure the night proceeds. Year 12 Arts & Technology Expo The Year 12 Arts & Technology exhibition had a very successful opening on the evening of Tuesday 14 October in the College’s Trade Training Centre. The exhibition has showcased the many hours of hard work that the current Year 12s have put into their folio subjects this year. The subjects shown include Studio Arts,Visual Communication and Design, Media Studies, Food Technology, Systems Technology and Design Technology. Jazz Band wins at Geelong Show ROYAL GEELONG SHOW SCHOOL JAZZ BAND COMPETITION Congratulations to the Senior Stage Band, conducted by Mr John Shawcross, who were very successful in the School Jazz Band Competition this week at the Geelong Show gaining First Place. Also Ryan Bentley,Year 12 gained First Place in the award for Vocalists. The St Joseph’s College Junior Jazz Ensemble, comprising mainly the Intermediate Band, performed very well in an open field.

Can and Cereal Appeal On behalf of Year 8H we would like to invite all students, parents and staff to support the Can and Cereal Appeal. The appeal officially started on Monday 20 October and will end on Friday 14 November. The final day of the appeal is a casual dress day for students and staff. We ask that you donate either a box of cereal, tea or coffee in place of a gold coin donation. The Can and Cereal Appeal supports the Geelong Food Relief Centre. The Geelong Food Relief Centre has been providing free food to those in need for 23 years. Working together with welfare agencies, last year the Centre saw 9,078 families who were referred to the Centre for support. Our school is one of the 80 or so schools in Geelong and the surrounding region, that every year help the Geelong Food Relief Centre make this possible. This year the aim is to collect enough items to equal a tonne and to beat the record we set last year. Every little bit helps and it will improve the lives of people in our community. Social Justice Statement Launch On Sunday 28 September, past studentTony Robertson (class of1970) was on hand in Brisbane with Archbishop Mark Coleridge to launch the 2014 Social Justice Statement from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. The statement, A Crown for Australia, Striving for the best in our sporting nation, was released for Social Justice.
SJC House Cooking Competition Congratulations On Sunday 19 October Angus Moore (8J) was baptised at the 11:00 am Parish Mass at Holy Spirit, in Manifold Heights. Then both Angus and Patrick Silo (7G), received their First Eucharist. Both boys have been preparing for these sacraments since early Term 3, with Mr John Harmon and Mrs Vicki Mills on a Thursday lunchtime in the Chapel. They have been supported by friends Jackson Harlock, Finn Stephensen and Nick Sanders. Angus and Patrick were welcomed at the Parish Mass a month ago by Father Gerard Keith who made them and their families feel the warmth of a true community welcome.
