Our guest speaker was former student Mr Peter Read. Peter served for over 30 years in the Australian Army including three tours of duty in Iraq, two peacekeeping missions in Bougainville, tours of duty in Malaysia and East Timor and a tour of duty in Afghanistan. His insights to the students in terms of leadership were exceptional. I would also like to thank Fr Gerard Keith for his role in the ceremony. Invitations are extended to all parents to attend the opening of the Joseph Innovation Trade Training Centre on 22 November at 5pm. My Son can’t get work experience in the career he is interested in…or he doesn’t know what he wants to do • Is there a similar career option/work experience he could seek? ie. For those interested in medicine, a Vet practice might be interesting. • Is there something else he would be happy to do for the week?
From the Deputies The end of year is fast approaching and spring seems to have arrived! End of Year exams are underway. Year 12 students are already in the middle of their exams and we wish them well during this period. Year 11 exams will be held from 15 - 22 November. Pathways exams will run from 2 - 5 December. Exam redemptions will be held for students deemed not to have made sufficient effort. Students and parents will be notified about these in due course. We hope that students will not slacken off in their efforts to prepare for the end of year exams. It’s always disappointing to realise that your results reflect your effort rather than your ability. Please take the time to read the exam preparation advice in the Curriculum news section. Claire Brown & Paul Clohesy - Deputy Principals
Getting ready for Work Experience Work Experience takes place during Activities Week at the College. It is compulsory for all Year 10 students. Activities Week in 2014 is planned to take place from 5 – 9 May. Year 9 students will be participating in a Work Experience Preparation Day on Wednesday 13 November. Letters have been sent home to parents alerting them to the work experience program. It is acknowledged that finding work experience places can be difficult. And unfortunately, it is not possible to get work experience in all career areas. Here are some suggestions for how to get started: My Son does know where he can do work experience… • Do you know somebody that works in this industry that he could approach for work experience? • If no, you can start a google/yellow pages search. • The students’ Work Experience booklet has templates of commentary students can use when contacting employers, as well as a list of previous work experience placements.
Compassion Innovation Integrity
• Is there a member of the family or network who may be able to offer an interesting work experience? • Has he completed the ‘Work Experience Help With the Choice’ task in the Work Experience book? If a student is stuck and can’t find a place, and/or is very worried and stressed about work experience he should come and see Karen Shum, the Careers Coordinator at the Careers Office for help, as soon as possible. Likewise, parents are welcome to contact Karen on 5226 8143. Parents can also ask questions via the Careers Blog or email. It is helpful to review the students’ Work Experience booklet. A copy of this booklet can be found on the Careers Blog at: http://blogs.sjcgeelong.catholic.edu.au/ careers/2013/10/18/2727/ When students have found a work experience place, they need to obtain information from the employer. The required information needed is filled in on a yellow form called the Work Experience Return Slip. This form will be given to students on the Work Experience Preparation Day. This information is then returned to the Careers Room to enable the required information to be filled into the Work Experience Form 328. The process for completion of activities is provided in the Work Experience book. The Careers Office transfers the information supplied onto the Form 382 which is the official work experience form. The Form 382 will be returned to students, both in hard copy and via email. Students must then organise to take it to the employer for signature. Students must sign the form 382, as well as parent/guardians. The original form is then returned to school. Mr Tobias, the Principal, signs the form last. The Careers Office obtains the Principal’s signature. Once all signatures are on the form, it is copied. Students receive a copy, as to does the employer. The school keeps the original. Students will not be permitted to do work experience unless they have returned the work experience form, with all signatures, to the school prior to the commencement of the placement. If students intend to take work experience in the construction industry, they must have a CI Card (Construction Induction Training). Students must inform the careers office that they will need to undertake CI Card Training. They do this by circling Yes on their Year 10 Work Experience Return Slip. CI Card training will be provided to students at school in early 2014. Karen Shum - Careers Coordinator

Presentation to St Vinnies Charlie Bowman from St Vinnies came out to the junior school assembly on Monday 28 October to accept a cheque for $2724. This cheque was presented by Jake McCorkell of Year 7 on behalf of the 38 Year 7 & 8 boys who participated in the SJC Sleep Out on Thursday 12 September. Charlie explained to the boys that this money would go into the education assistance program which helps support families of children that require assistance with education expenses such as books and uniform. Thank you to all the boys and those people within our community who donated money towards this appeal. A big thank you also goes to the entire St Joseph’s community for their donations of clothing and blankets that were collected on Friday 13 September. Between collection and 4 October the donations helped over 400 adults and children with their requests for clothing. Your participation in this event displayed an outstanding contribution to St Vinnies assisting them in their efforts to help those less fortunate in our local community. Sustainability Matters NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK – NOVEMBER 11-17
With the commencement of National Recycling week next Monday, it is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our recycling achievements thus far and reflect, as individuals, on new strategies and initiatives we could employ to reduce our own carbon footprint further. To date, we have achieved the following; Fully Commingled Recycling -Years 7 & 8 areas, Food Technology, staffroom, Canteens and Cricket Pavilion. REDcycling -Years 7 & 8 areas and staffroom Composting - Food technology and staffroom The table below outlines which items may be placed in the Fully Commingled and REDcycling bins. The sustainability team are seeking donations of the following items for various projects; • Old glass jars (with or without lids), particularly with embossed writing. • 1.25L plastic bottles (with black cap). Labels off would be appreciated, however, any in excellent condition will be acceptable. • Driftwood • Twine (natural, not plastic) • Hessian bags • Large cardboard boxes (sides need to be A3 size or larger) Small items may be left at reception. This was the first “Cut the Wrap” day where students were simply displaying better sustainable practice, as there was no reward or food incentive offered. Despite overall numbers of participants being lower, 7E rose to the challenge, demonstrating 100% participation on the day. Unknowingly, they will be awarded a free pizza lunch for their effort. I am keen to obtain parent/guardian feedback on our “Cut the Wrap” events, to ascertain whether level of support is simply incentive driven, or related to the level of advertising. If you would like to provide feedback regarding a sufficient level of advertising for you (i.e. newsletter notification/ text message), that would be appreciated. In Sympathy Toucan Appeal On 8 November the school will have a casual clothes day to raise awareness and gather food for the 2013 Geelong Food Bank Toucan Appeal. How would you like to go to school on an empty stomach? If a person has not eaten for a certain period of time it can affect their brain function reducing their learning capabilities. How would it feel after having not eaten for 2-3 days and slowly starving in a first world country whilst most of the people around you have more food than they need? 23% of families in Geelong had to live off an income of $500 or less a week. This is a reality. Poverty isn’t just in third world countries. There are still many people struggling to survive in our own community. The Geelong Food Bank Toucan Appeal is trying to pool as much food as possible for disadvantaged people within the Geelong community. To help you can bring in cans of food and boxes of cereal as a donation. PLEASE BRING AS MUCH AS YOU… CAN!!! (<–Get it!?!?) Our aim is to put the cans in a line that is long enough to get around Zampatti Oval and make a very large pyramid with the cereal boxes. All of this food will then go to the Geelong Food Relief Centre and the Second Bite Foundation. Jacob Talbot, Michael Bongiorno & Joe McGivern 8J

Heritage Highlights Recently I have been hunting for photographs of the Joey’s Cricket Clubrooms during the 60s, and while I did not find any photographs of the clubrooms, I found many photographs of the College buildings and grounds, spread through various boxes and folders. These photographs are tangible evidence of the growth and development of the buildings and grounds from the time St. Augustine’s Boy’s Home occupied the site to 2004. These photographs’ form an important part of records of the College History. I will share them with you in this and future Heritage Highlights. I hope one day to have all photographs of the College buildings and grounds gathered into a comprehensive collection.
