Principal’s Report Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College, I hope you have enjoyed the Melbourne Cup weekend and that some of you have had the opportunity to take a break. The Year 12 students are well into their exams which they sit here at school. In most subjects about 50% to 65% of scores are still determined as a consequence of the final examination. For that reason alone, it is important that boys learn the skills associated with examinations. At each year level final examinations will be conducted. The discipline associated with an examination room and the associated study skills necessary to revise a large quantity of content, are both important and necessary skills for academic success. We try and get boys used to the experience and teach them the skills, so that they manage the process in their final year. Work completed throughout the year is important but so is the final examination period, which we are approaching at the end of the school year. I am pleased to announce that the Victorian Government have confirmed that another ten Year 9 St Joseph’s students will be a part of the Young Leaders to China Program in 2015. This was an outstanding opportunity which 12 of our current Year 9s have experienced and current Year 8 students will also be able to apply to be part of next year’s program. News from the Deputies We were very pleased to host the Southern Region EREA Deputy Principals for two days last week. Deputy Principals from all the EREA schools in Victoria and Tasmania gathered at St Joseph’s where they were given presentations by a number of St Joseph’s staff on some of the innovative programs that are taking place. All in attendance were extremely impressed with what they heard.The group were also fortunate to hear from Fr Nestus from Mannya who happened to be at the College visiting. VCE EXAMS The Unit 3 & 4 VCE exams began last week with over 200 very nervous boys sitting their English exam. It has been pleasing to hear positive comments from the students after each exam and we continue to wish them and their families well with all the preparation and anxiety that surrounds their final exams. We have certainly been impressed by the number of boys who have been in at school studying and seeking assistance from their teacher. COLLEGE UNIFORM AND DRESS CODE Long hair is back in fashion! We notice growing numbers of students have hair well below collar length. The College has no problem with this, provided that during school hours and when in College uniform, if longer than collar length, hair is worn tied back. This is clearly stated in the Student Diary. Students have been reminded about this and while some are complying, others are reluctant. In certain situations this is a health and safety issue as well as a matter of compliance with the College Uniform and Dress Code. So that your son is not deemed to be “out of uniform” and as a consequence attract demerit points, we ask that you address this with your son. Students are also expected to be clean shaven.An exception to this is during ‘Movember’ when some senior students will be growing a ‘mo’. To do so, however, they must be registered. Curriculum News SJC AWARDS AND MUSIC SHOWCASE Our annual SJC Award and Music Showcase will be held on Friday 28 November. All Year 7 students and a number of students in Years 8-12 will perform on the evening. Students in Years 7-10 will be acknowledged for academic excellence and endeavour in all subject areas across the curriculum. Tickets for the event will be available from Wednesday 12 November ($7 per person) from Holly McIntosh, our Fees Officer, at SJC reception. Tickets are limited to 3 per family (excluding award recipients and performers). Year 7 students, award recipients and performers are not required to purchase a ticket. Any unsold tickets will be available to purchase through the Fees Office on Wednesday 26 November from 9am-4pm. Letters to Year 7s and award recipients, including a ticket order form will be sent out shortly. PARENT SURVEY ON REPORTING We are currently taking the opportunity to review our assessment and reporting information to parents. Parents/ Carers are invited to complete a short survey to help evaluate the effectiveness of our current processes as we move to providing up to date feedback on line. An email with a link will be sent to parents/carers this week. Please take the opportunity to provide valuable feedback. YEAR 8-11EXAMINATIONS Year 11 exams commence on Friday 14 November and conclude on Friday 21 November. This will be followed by four days of Year 12 classes from Monday 24 November to Thursday 27 November. Year 11’s final day is Friday 28 November with a special program being run for all of the year level. Many students in Year 11 have already undertaken a Year 12 subject and have completed or will be completing that exam soon. This can be a busy time and students should work together with their teachers and parents to ensure they are well prepared. Year 8-10 exams are held in the first week of December. The dates for each year level is below Year 8 Tuesday 2 December – Thursday 4 December Year 9 Wednesday 3 December – Thursday 4 December Year 10 Tuesday 2 December – Friday 5 December Examinations are designed to assess a student’s understanding of the semester’s work. In classes students will be given help with revision and guidelines from their teachers. If students are feeling anxious about exams they should discuss their concerns with their subject teacher or homeroom teacher. Conversely if students are not studying or prioritising their exams, parents are
encouraged to email teachers so that the teacher is able to help set priorities and schedule study time. Students in Years 8-10 are required to attend school for the whole day. Students in Year 11 are only required to attend for examinations. Supervised study exists for those students who are at school at other times. YEAR 12 ORIENTATION CLASSES FOR CURRENT YEAR 11S 2014 Year 12 Orientation classes will commence at the conclusion of the Year 11 exams. It is compulsory for current Year 11 students to attend these classes as they mark the official commencement of their Year 12 classes. These classes will not be repeated at the beginning of next year so non-attendance would mean that a student will already be behind when he returns next February. Some subjects will also be making a start on important SAC tasks. Students in other year levels who are studying a Unit 3/4 subject in 2015 will also attend the orientation classes. BOOKLISTS – GENERAL INFORMATION Booklists for all students currently in Years 7-11 will be posted mid-November with re-enrolment forms. Allocated subjects for next year will also be sent with this information package. The booklists will also be available on line. Books and stationery can be ordered at www.campion.com.au or visit the SJC website and click on the link under ‘News’. The passcode is YV28. Alternatively, students can submit the order at the front office on or before Tuesday 9 December 2014. Please note that due to many students losing access codes in previous years, electronic textbooks can only be ordered online. Families will also have the option of home delivery or pick up at school. Booklist orders can be home delivered or collected from the College, Br O S Adams Gymnasium (Queens Road Newtown) on Wednesday 28 January 2015. BOOKLIST ORDERS FOR SJC STUDENTS STUDYING AT SACRED HEART COLLEGE IN 2015 For students studying a VCE subject at SHC in 2015, orders can be placed through the Hedley’s website www.hedleysebc.com.au or through the SHC website. Second hand books and equipment may also be obtained using the Sustainable School Shop on their website: http://www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au BOOKLIST ORDERS FOR SJC STUDENTS STUDYING AT CLONARD COLLEGE IN 2015 The same textbooks as St Joseph’s are being used for the subjects being studied at Clonard. Therefore, parents can order the texts from the SJC booklists. CONTINUED>>> VCE ENGLISH NOVELS – EARLY BOOKLIST ORDER Year 11 and 12 students are able to order their English novels (and film) early so that they can read them over the break. This is important preparation for VCE English. Year 10 and 11 students have been given the early English booklist order form. Parents can order online (details on school website) if they have not returned the booklist this week. Prepaid orders can be collected by students in Room A8 at lunchtime on Monday 24 November. Please take this opportunity for students to make the best start to their VCE. SECOND HAND BOOKS Second Hand School Supplies www.secondhandschoolsupplies.com.au can also be used for the purchase of second hand textbooks and are located at 9 Star St. A reminder to families that they can drop off any textbooks to Second Hand School Supplies to be sold on consignment. Year 7 in 2015 Music Opportunity If there are any new Year 7 boys in 2015 who already play an instrument or who are vocalists , they may want to consider being part of the tour to New Zealand next year at the end of term one. If a boy has been learning an instrument or has been singing in a choir for a year, then it is likely that they would join the Intermediate Band or Vocal Ensemble in 2015.If a boy is around grade 3 or 4 then it is likely that they would join the Senior Band. Congratulations Congratulations to both the Year 7 and Year 8 boys who participated in the Geelong round of the Super 8s cricket on Tuesday 21 October. All four teams were undefeated up to the finals and a Year7 and a Year 8 team won through to the regional finals in Melton on 19 November. Compassion Innovation Integrity
City Justice Walk ‘The Edmund Rice Youth Ministry Team’ has designed a City Justice Walk that challenges students to develop a more holistic view of Melbourne. The walk engaged students in reflection on the deeper justice issues that exist in our city. Issues such as homelessness, drug dependency, gambling, racism and human trafficking were discussed from a social justice perspective. The Year 11 VCAL students as part of their unit on homelessness this term were involved in the City Justice Walk lead by a couple of past St Joseph’s students trained as leaders, James Palmer and Jem Moore. I was so proud to introduce them to the boys and to see what great work these young men are currently involved in. While Melbourne is a place of affluence and comfort being the home of many businesses, financial and retail centres, it also has many alleyways and corners that conceal the homeless, gambling addictions, drug use, prostitution, poverty and people trafficking. and through a variety of subjects, has explored various aspects of ‘greener’ living. This term we are again embracing a more environmentally aware approach to our activities. Over the next two weeks, the Year 9 Clonard girls and the Year 9 Westcourt boys will be involved in making a short film. In three weeks’ time, all the films submitted will be viewed and voted upon. The top 5 films will then have their official viewing on Wednesday 3 December, where they will be awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd and highly commended places. At the viewings, all power needed to run the short films will be generated by the electric generator bikes that were purchased earlier this year. All students will have the opportunity to help us ‘stock pile’ the energy required to enable us to watch the movies. This initiative will show students how much energy is needed to allow us to live our daily lives – and show them that greener options for power exist and can be utilised. This term Year 8 students are the leaders of the Toucan appeal at SJC. The Toucan appeal or the Can and Cereal Appeal helps people who are less fortunate and are struggling to buy food for their families in Geelong. All food which is donated will go to the Geelong Food Relief Centre. Year 8 students would like all year levels to participate, by bringing a box of cereal, tea or coffee on Friday 14 November. Friday 14 November is a casual clothes day, the cost of wearing casual clothes is a donation of the food listed above. Our goal for this year is to collect one tonne of food and beat last year’s record of 940kg of food. On behalf of Year 8 students I thank you for your support in advance.
