Principal’s Report Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College, It was wonderful to see the level of support for the new development at Westcourt Campus as evident in the number of Year 8 parents who attended the final parents gathering on the new site last Monday evening. The response from both parents and staff has been universally positive and we look forward to the commencement of classes next year. Over the last week or two I have attended a number of official functions including the Canteen Volunteers’ Dinner at Barwon Edge and the Combined Catholic Secondary Colleges’ Board Dinner hosted by St Ignatius College at Drysdale. The support St Joseph’s receives from our parent group is outstanding and was clearly evident at both functions. Year 12 examinations are coming to a conclusion and as they do, the exam period commences for other year levels. While exams are not the only form of valid assessment, they are nevertheless important as students progress towards their final years. The revision skills implicit in preparing for exams are also important building blocks in ensuring successful educational outcomes. Please reinforce with your sons, irrespective of their year level, that final examination preparation is extremely important, as is revision of the semester’s work, in preparation for final examinations. A reminder to all parents of the Annual Awards and Music Showcase which will be held on Friday 29 November at Costa Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to come along and celebrate students achievements as well as enjoy a marvellous showcase of some fantastic St Joseph’s musical talent. We would love to see you there. The Director of Catholic Education for the Melbourne Archdiocese Mr Stephen Elder has asked that the extract “Victorian Parliamentary Enquiry” (on following page) be included in this week’s newsletter. school in Australia and two St Joseph’s boys visiting their school in return. The aims of the program are twofold; to share leadership structures and social justice initiatives and to foster the knowledge that St Joseph’s College is a part of a larger EREA family.

Victorian Parliamentary Enquiry Last week the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other NonGovernment Organisations released its final report and recommendations. It is source of much sorrow and regret for everyone in Catholic education that children were abused in Victorian schools. For this reason I elected to appear before the inquiry – to make sure that our child protection practices stand up to the most rigorous scrutiny and to help the parliament identify ways to strengthen child protection legislation to protect our most vulnerable. I am pleased to advise that in its report, the inquiry noted Catholic education’s effort and commitment to mandatory reporting and child protection legislation, and our comprehensive professional development and staff training initiatives. The report also noted the need for Catholic education to undertake further work to ensure greater consistency with Victorian education department procedures. While child protection laws apply to all schools equally, we will also proactively engage with the Australian Government’s Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to ensure our experience can help inform and strengthen legislation into the future. It is not surprising that our efforts in relation to child protection were recognised. We take the unprecedented growth in Catholic school enrolments in the last five years as a measure of your continuing trust in our schools. Catholic schools have no greater responsibility than to honour the tremendous trust you place in them to provide a safe environment for your children. Stephen Elder- Executive Director Of Catholic Education

The two students selected to represent St Joseph’s as part of this program were Michael McAuliffe and Xavier McKeegan. The McAuliffe and McKeegan families hosted two Year 10 boys from St Pius X College which is situated in Chatswood 10km north of Sydney CBD. While at St Joseph’s the students met with the Student Leadership Coordinator, participated in classes and managed to experience the surf our region has to offer. Xavier and Michael then travelled back to Sydney with our guests in order to experience life at St Pius X. We would like to congratulate Michael and Xavier for the tremendous way they represented their College and thank the McAuliffe and McKeegan families for the hospitality they provided to our guests. AUSTRALIAN LASER STRIKE CHAMPIONSHIPS We would like to congratulate some of our Year 11 boys who were part of a team that finished second in the Australian Laser Strike Championship held last holidays. Ben Walker, Mitch Helmore, James Tuddenham and Aaron Chisholm were all part of the ‘Skilled Team’ that narrowly lost the final to a much older and more experienced team. St Joseph’s were contacted by the organisers of the event who let us know what an incredible achievement this was for such young competitors. EXAM REDEMPTION SESSIONS As mentioned in the last edition of the College newsletter, students who are judged by their subject teachers not to have applied sufficient effort in one or more of their exams will be required to complete the exam again. Our rationale for this procedure is to send a very clear message to our students that they must strive for their highest in all of their endeavours. It must be remembered that the criteria for re-sitting an exam is based solely on effort not ability. Subject teachers who have taught individual students will judge exam performance based on observations and data accumulated throughout the entire semester. DATES FOR THESE REDEMPTION EXAMS Year 11 students – Friday 29 November beginning at 9am Year 8 – 10 students – Tuesday 10 December beginning at 9am Letters will be sent to families of all boys who will be required to complete an exam re-sit outlining the details involved.

From the Deputies YEAR 10 EREA STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM St Joseph’s has again taken part in the EREA Student Exchange Program this year. The program involves two Year 10 students visiting our College from another EREA

“A Tonne of Help” for the Geelong Food Relief Centre On Friday 13 November, a true example of our core value of compassion was clearly evident. All staff and students wore casual dress and for the privilege of a uniform-free day, donated food for Geelong Food Relief Centre. The “Can & Cereal Appeal’ was led by the Year 8 boys and RE staff, with a massive amount of food items collected on the day. The St Joseph’s community donated a tonne of food in the form of cans, boxes of cereal and personal hygiene products. This equates to 1500 meals for the needy people in Geelong. Geelong Food Relief Centre provides a mini mart facility where people can exchange vouchers for food. This organisation relies on donations and they were very grateful for the tremendous contribution by St Joseph’s College. Well done and thank you to all involved in this appeal. VCAL Market Stall Year 11 VCAL students Cody Huntley-Mitchell, Nick Murphy, Nick Radoslav and Matt Defina hosted a stall at the Breakwater Preschool Spring Trade Fair last Friday night. Term 3 was spent making the concrete planters and tealight candle holders that were for sale. The boys chose this project to meet their Personal Development Skills outcomes and to raise funds for the Children’s Ward at the Geelong Hospital. Congratulations to the boys for raising over $500. Leah Irving - VCAL Coordinator

Arrangements for Student Laptops All laptops must be returned before students leave for their summer break. During the summer break we reimage all student laptops with new software, fix warranty problems and repair major damage. All files need to be backed up at home. The computers will be wiped completely and reimaged for 2014. Any student leaving or going on holidays before the end of the school year must return laptop, power adaptor and bag to the ICT Centre before they leave.

“Even though I am no longer at school here, I feel that this is my home and where I can come to for help.” This comment was made by a past student last week who, in representing the Filipino community, is working hard to provide assistance to his family and community devastated by the recent Typhoon Haiyan. Another student, also a member of the Filipino community, spoke with tears in his eyes about the loss of life, livelihood and community that has also befallen our not so distant neighbour.

• 2013 Year 11 students will have laptops returned on their last day of orientation week

As a Catholic community, in expression of our desire for solidarity with the poor and the Gospel imperative to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, we have decided to hold a High Five Casual Day for the Philippines. $5 will provide food for a family of four. We have asked the students and staff to be generous in their response to provide monetary support to the relief effort through Caritas, the global Catholic aid agency. The College has also committed to contribute to the appeal by matching student donations.

• all other 2014 year levels can collect laptops from the Gym when they collect their books on Thursday 30 January and Friday 31 January

If you would like to also contribute to this appeal you can donate directly to Caritas at www.caritas.org.au Caritas is an effective organisation through which to donate as it is known for having the smallest administration costs in Australia and it works through local offices such as Caritas Philippines. The community of St Joseph’s College is such a generous one and we thank each and every one of you for your part in that. Jo Hart - Director of Mission & Identity

Sustainability Matters NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK As the National Recycling week comes to a close, I would like to thank everyone for their efforts in recycling and support of the various endeavours of our Sustainability Leaders. In addition, we have now established a “drop zone” for various items such as; corks, stamps and bread clips, which will be forwarded to various organisations for their charities. REDCYCLING COMPETITION!! YEARS 7 AND 8 It has been wonderful to witness our younger students considering the consequence of placing their rubbish in the bin and taking action to divert waste from landfill by recycling their soft plastic wrappers. Collectively, staff and students diverted 240L wheelie bin of soft plastic from landfill.

General Office - Christmas Break Please note that the College office will close on Thursday 19 December and will reopen on Monday 6 January 2014. Zara Walter – Office Manager

It gives me great pleasure to announce 7C as the winners of the REDcycling competition, collecting 822grams, followed closely by 7I with 813g. As a recurring theme it seems, 7C will be rewarded with a free pizza lunch for their efforts! May I encourage everyone to recycle their soft plastic at participating Coles or Safeway/Woolworths supermarkets. PAPER RE-USE BOXES Sustainability Leaders have been busy over the past weeks labelling the lids of our paper ream boxes to be reused as “Paper Re-Use” boxes in each classroom. To date, they have been distributed to all Homerooms. BASKETBALL RINGS - A SPORTING NEW FACELIFT FOR OUR COLLEGE BINS Volunteers from the Men’s association (Team 1) have been very industrious supporting yet another Sustainability Leader initiative, with the installation of basketball ring posters into 60 of the 240L wheelie bins around the College. It has been encouraging to see students “practising” with them already, as it was intended. The Sustainability Team!! Kelly Jenkins - Sustainability Coordinator

Remembrance Day Service While the College held its own service,Year 8 student William Morrison donated his time and talents to the Queenscliff RSL for their Remembrance Day ceremony, playing the trumpet during the service. It was a very moving ceremony that was well attended by a cross-section of the community. Well done William.

CHANGE OF PREFERENCE SESSIONS

YEAR 9 WORK EXPERIENCE PREPARATION DAY The work experience preparation day took place on Wednesday 13 November. Students completed the Safe at Work General Module and were provided with instruction on the work experience program, preparing for work experience, staying safe, as well as how to ask for work experience. Students have already found placements and have returned their yellow forms. Well done boys! The College encourages all boys to find their work experience placements, where possible, this year to reduce the pressure to do so in 2014, to allow enough time to complete the paperwork required and to give the students a head start to gain placements. If any student was away on Wednesday, they should see Karen at Careers to collect a work experience book and to also find out what they need to do in preparation for their work experience next year. FOCUS ON FUTURE CAREERS Careers of the future: By the time you graduate from a degree or an apprenticeship, there will be many new jobs that haven’t even been invented yet. Technology expansion is rapid and who knows what jobs will be advertised in 10 years time, let alone 50? According to a La Trobe University video featuring their Bachelor of Arts degree, by 2030 2 Billion jobs will be obsolete. 2 BILLION!! They will be replaced by ones that don’t exist yet. The video also suggests you will have approximately 10 careers in your life time This doesn’t mean changing employers 10 times, this means different occupations. So, you may start out as a builder and

then move on to teaching and then to nursing.

scholarships.html

The message of the video is that you have to be able to adapt as the world changes. You will need to continually work on developing your personal skills (i.e., communication, team work, problem solving)

Outstanding Scholars Program at the University of Canberra: Students who achieve an ATAR of 95+ will be eligible for the University of Canberra Chancellor’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence, valued at $2,500 per annum as well as other benefits. For more information, go to http://www.canberra.edu.au/seasu/programs/outstanding-scholars

You will also need to commit to lifelong learning to have up to date skills and to be competitive in the job market. So you may complete a university degree, then a TAFE qualification, then short courses, then a graduate university course and then more short courses. There is no right or wrong way of doing things, but you need to be flexible and adaptable when it comes to change, because if there is one thing you can be 100% sure of, there will be lots of it. Below is a link that leads to a showcase of some possible future technology careers. Upstart Pitching Showdown On Tuesday 19 November, the St Joseph’s College Foundation hosted the Upstart Entrepreneurial Challenge pitching showdown. The event was part of the Foundation’s annual dinner which was held at The Davidson Restaurant. Old Collegian Josh Rudd spoke about his journey as a student to now heading one of the country’s main clothing brand in Ghanda. Guests were then treated to 9 entrepreneurial pitches from both staff and students. The presenters of the pitches were attempting to convince the judges that their idea was the next big thing. In the hope that they would be one of the three winners of the $1000 cash prize plus an iPad. The judges had a tough night trying to decide who the three winners were given that each of the pitches was of a very high standard. However after much discussion the following entrepreneurs were announced as the overall winners of the Upstart Challenge for 2013. Pope Francis Needs You! Newspaper articles in recent days have described how Pope Francis is restoring faith in the Catholic Church amongst Catholics and non-Catholics alike. The papers are calling it the “Francis Effect” and, anecdotally at least, it is having a positive effect on attendance numbers at Sunday Mass. There is certainly something very likeable about Francis. His warmth and humour are readily on display in his public appearances, and he seems confident to speak openly and honestly on most topics. He is now asking for us to do the same!

In Sympathy

Mr Damian Dougherty (39 years), son of past parent and Josephine member, Desma Dougherty and Garry (deceased). Brother to Dean Dougherty Old Collegian (1981 alumni year), and Ashley Dougherty Chanel College Old Collegians. Damian also has four sisters Shelley, Loretta, Gabrielle and Rachael all of whom attended Clonard College,. Uncle of Danielle Higgins, staff member Pope Francis has called for an Extraordinary General at Clonard College, Shaun Higgins (Old Collegian 2005), Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for October 2014, and the theme of the Synod is Pastoral Challenges to the Family Matthew Higgins (2011) and Levi Jones (current Year 10 SJC). To all the Dougherty families we extend our heartfelt in the context of Evangelisation. What this means is that sympathy on their tragic loss. all the Catholic bishops of the world will gather in Rome to discuss how some of the issues of our day are affecting Mrs Margaret Shillinglaw-Fraser (71 years), the Church’s ability to spread and nourish the faith of grandmother of Connor Gallagher (Year 8), Willow and Jesus in the world. For example, questions around divorce, Miller. remarriage, contraception and homosexuality have led to Mr Domenico De Rosso, father of staff member Frank many giving up the regular practice of their faith at Sunday Eucharist and perhaps giving up on faith in God altogether. De Rosso, Robert De Rosso, John De Rosso and Michael De Rosso (1986), grandfather of Ben, Zarra and Joren Old Pope Francis sees it as a matter of urgency to bring these questions into the open and hear what everyday Catholics Collegian (2010). Domenico was a foundation member of the St Mary’s of the Angels Catholic Church Choir have to say, rather than simply restating the Church and a talented musician. This year was the Choir’s 60th teaching on such issues. Anniversary celebration and was dedicated to Domenico As happens prior to any Synod of Bishops, Pope Francis is who was extremely ill and unable to attend. His legacy and consulting Catholics from every diocese in the world about memory will live on in the hearts of all who know and love the Synod’s theme. Rarely however, has such consultation him. created as much media attention as this consultation is doing. It is clear that the Holy Father wants us to have our Mr Brian Henderson (74 years), grandfather of Patrick Henderson (Year 7). say! Mrs Ava O’Reilly (81 years), grandmother of Diarmuid To have your voice heard, head to the website O’Reilly (Year 9), Old Collegian, Conor O’Reilly ( 2010) www.cam.org.au and follow the link “Pope calls for views and Michael O’Reilly, great grandmother of Aidan O’Reilly. of Melbourne Catholics”. Responses are required by 6 December, but don’t leave it to the last minute as there is quite a bit of reading involved if you would like to do it well. Some may choose the simpler option of emailing the diocesan coordinator with their response to matthew.macdonald@cam.org.au.

I believe this is a great opportunity. When many Catholics refer to “The Church” they are often thinking of the hierarchy (Pope, bishops, priests), but in fact the Church’s own definition of itself is “The People of God”, which is the hierarchy and laity all together. Heritage Highlights As I have been getting positive feedback about the early photographs, I have found some more to share with you. I am really enjoying these glimpses of earliest days of St Augustine’s and St Joseph’s. THANKS I would like to thank Brother Kevin Woodruff for forwarding papers relating to St Joseph’s. I am always glad to receive papers and objects that add to the College story. Susan Belluzzo - College Archivist St Augustine’s Band – 8 November 1906.
