ABOUT US
St. Anne’s-Belfield School is a nurturing and challenging age 2 through Grade 12 co-ed academic community in Charlottesville, Virginia. Since 1910, we have sought to foster students’ natural curiosity and love of learning so that they may become, in the words of our founding headmistress Mary Hyde DuVal, “strong in body, broad of mind, tender of heart, responsive in soul.” We believe that small classes, expert and caring faculty, and an environment built on mutual respect is essential to preparing students to become exemplary citizens and visionary leaders.

COVID-19 RESPONSE
2019 – 2021: We pivoted to a virtual platform in March 2020 and in 2020-21, domestic and international students had the option to attend in-person or virtually.
2021-22: While all students learned inperson, opportunities for extracurricular activities were severely curtailed.
LOURIE LEARNING CENTER
In the Lourie Learning Center (LLC) there is a makerspace where students design Wearable Arts Runway Show outfits, take CS classes, or 3D print; a recording studio for music and audio engineering; a food lab for immersive world languages lessons and fellowship among boarding students on the weekends; and high-tech, flexible spaces for collaborative learning, arts performance, and in-person or virtual speakers. See more points of distinction on the back.
POINTS OF DISTINCTION
• Integrated Math: By the end of Integrated Mathematics 4, students will have completed the equivalent of Pre-Calculus, which includes: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry.
• AP Capstone™: St. Anne’s-Belfield is one of only 15% of Virginia public and private high schools to offer an AP Capstone, and is the only school in Charlottesville/Albemarle to offer this distinction. Our AP Capstone diploma program is based on two yearlong courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Seniors may choose to participate in either. No senior is enrolled in both AP Seminar and AP Research this year.
• Biotechnology and Ethics Advanced Senior Seminar: Students are developing an environmental DNA sequence, a tool that will allow our student researchers to find new populations of endangered species in our ecosystem.
• Chapel: Our weekly, nondenominational services are student- and faculty-led, representing a variety of faiths and providing a reflective and spiritual environment for all.
• Environmental Studies Advanced Senior Seminar: We are the only high school in the nation with a federal license to work with the Virginia Department of Game and Wildlife to study, analyze, and gather data on the federally-endangered James River spinymussel.
• The Pathways Program: Students earn a note of distinction on their transcript by engaging in rigorous experiential learning, completing a internship, serving the school community, and giving a public presentation of their work. Pathways for 2024-25 include Civic Engagement, Environmental Studies, and Arts Management.
