ver-evolving technological advances mean that education across the world is also undergoing rapid change. New programs and methods are being developed to take advantage of the abundance of information now at students’ fingertips and to use these

tools to prepare students for college, careers, community engagement, and global citizenship. St. Anne’s-Belfield School is committed to providing the best educational experience for our students. Our donors make it possible for the School to deliver on strategic commitments to faculty excellence and

ongoing investments in professional development. During the past year, 99% of our faculty members participated in one or more professional development opportunities, several examples of which are at right. From online webinars to week-long conferences, our teachers were exposed to new ideas and new methods which they brought back to their classrooms and shared with their colleagues. More than 650 donors at Auction 2014 in April contributed to a total of more than $400,000 in net proceeds raised toward professional development. Donors to the Annual Fund also helped to underwrite additional investments to professional development programs. Keeping abreast of emerging trends and incorporating best practices into the daily life of our School community will continue to be a top philanthropic priority.

The inaugural institute was funded by private gifts from individuals and proceeds from Auction 2014. At the Institute, teachers worked with renowned education consultant Alan November to re-imagine traditional classroom lessons, redesigning them to incorporate project-based learning, make student work visible beyond the classroom, leverage technology in order to deepen learning, and build global connections. Energized by the central and essential role that the teacher plays in the 21st century classroom, our teachers are dedicated to collaboration, creativity, and risk-taking. “Working across disciplines and being challenged to think about teaching differently were two benefits of the program,” said Upper School math teacher Blake Ware. “It was fantastic.”

DOUG DODD GRADE SIX SCIENCE TEACHER

T

hanks to professional development funds, Doug Dodd researched Dr. Eric Mazur’s flipped classroom “Interactive Instruction” model, which involves students learning independently during class time and focusing their attention on underlying concepts. Lessons are interspersed with conceptual questions designed to expose common difficulties in understanding the material. The students are allowed to think briefly about the question and formulate their own answers. Then they spend time discussing their answers in groups of three to four, attempting to reach consensus on the correct answer. Dodd conducted trials of various analytics programs, in addition to redesigning the curriculum and creating course assessments, assignments, and learning activities to be implemented in the 2014-2015 academic year. To facilitate this method of instruction and assessment, Dodd has piloted a program called Learning Catalytics, developed by Dr. Mazur and described as a “bringyour-own-device student engagement, assessment, and classroom intelligence system.”

n addition to unrestricted Annual Fund donations, the School receives gifts to address specific needs. During the past year, donors provided $7,395,358 in addition to the Annual Fund in support of specific programs, funds for general and restricted endowments to enable new projects and priorities, and funds to honor and support people within our School community. A sample of these funds and initiatives are listed on these pages. LEFT TO RIGHT: Andrew Brennan, David Lourie, Fred Chandler, Etta Legner, and Robert and Molly Hardie at the dedication of the Legner Library and the Chandler Courtyard in the Learning Village.

programs

Donors contributed to various funds during the past year to ensure that the School’s faculty members are trained in the most effective teaching methods and that students have enriching opportunities outside the classroom. In addition, donors invested in various funds to award scholarships and learning experiences to members of the School community. Below are examples of those funds and initiatives.

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS Individuals, corporations, and foundations provided almost $260,000 in support for programs and endowments which provide scholarships and financial aid to students attending St. Anne’s-Belfield School. These funds have been set up to honor specific individuals (for example, the Alexander Hamilton Bishop Memorial Scholarship) or to provide general financial aid to students in need. Approximately 40% of the School’s students receive financial aid.

FRANK FUND Named in honor of alumnus Frank Stinchfield ‘94, the Frank Stinchfield Experiential Environmental Learning Fund provides a scholarship to an Upper School student to attend an experiential learning opportunity in environmental sciences.

Several of the School’s innovative education initiatives have been made possible by the generosity of parents who sensed the transformative effect these programs would provide. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mary Blake, John Young from Union Bank, David Lourie, and Rich Mazzola at the dedication of new scoreboards on School athletic fields.

places The School continues to improve its physical spaces through a growing endowment supported by private giving, with the goal of enhancing the student experience and fostering community.

DINING HALL/STUDENT COMMONS The new Lee-DuVal Dining Hall and Randolph Hall Student Commons on the Greenway Rise Campus are enjoyed by all and have truly transformed the Upper School student experience.

NEW AUDITORIUM In September 2014, construction began on a new Performing Arts Center on the Greenway Rise Campus. When completed in late 2015, the Center will be capable of hosting the entire Upper School community for Chapel services and performances.

LEGNER LIBRARY AND CHANDLER COURTYARD

DOUG’S TRIP Founded in 2009, “Doug’s Trip” is named after alumnus Douglas Robert Wardle ‘08, who died suddenly in 2007 while on a service trip to Nicaragua. Each year family, friends, and current parents provide additional support to augment the Fund established in his name. In 2014, 80 freshmen and 25 faculty members worked on 14 different teams to address the housing needs of families and the elderly in southeastern Kentucky.

CAMP CORWITH Named in memory of alumnus Corwith Davis ’95, Camp Corwith is supported by Corwith’s friends and provides a camp experience to 40 underserved youth in the Charlottesville area each summer. 2014 marked the second year of the camp.

CLASS NIGHT AWARDS Made possible by donors over the past several decades, a variety of scholarships and recognition awards are given by the School each year in celebration of students, faculty, and friends who have had a significant impact.

8

In recognition of leadership gifts from The Molly and Robert Hardie Family to the Campaign for the Next Century, two spaces at the Learning Village were renamed in honor of longtime administrator Etta Legner, and Fred Chandler, former Head of the Middle School and current Associate Head of School for Academics.

HANCOCK’S HANGOUT In recognition of a leadership gift from Mike Pausic and Kelley MacDougall to the Campaign for the Next Century, a Learning Village playground was named in honor of retiring third grade teacher Don Hancock.

SCOREBOARDS AND PIANO ON THE BELFIELD CAMPUS Union First Market Bank provided funding for seven scoreboards on the Belfield Campus, as well as a grand piano for the Learning Village Auditorium.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT FILM ROOM Thanks to the generosity of the Cory Family, the Athletic Boosters, and other parent donors, a new film room in the Conway Convocation Center was created, allowing teams to review and learn from game films and providing additional meeting space for coaches.

SINGAPORE MATH AND COMPUTER CODING Following the implementation of Singapore Math in our Kindergarten through grade six curriculum, the Board of Trustees identified computer coding as an essential skill to introduce across the School and to offer in-depth to our most interested students. The School finalized a significant gift commitment of $1.125 million to support the Singapore Math program and to bring computer science, coding, and computational thinking instruction to our students across all grade levels. The School began its Singapore Math program last year, and has recently brought on board two new faculty members with training and expertise in computer science. In October we welcomed Zach Minster, a recent graduate of Brown University, and in November we welcomed Kim Wilkens, founder of Tech-Girls, to help develop curriculum and prepare faculty for this new effort.

TECHNOLOGY GRANT An anonymous donor provided $1 million in spring 2014 to ensure that each student has immediate access to an age-appropriate technological device (iPod Touch, iPad, or laptop computer). This gift also allocated resources to New technology is taking hold across campus, as students unlock possibilities. provide more tools to our faculty, enhance existing resources, increase IT capacity and technical support, improve our technological infrastructure and bandwidth, and adopt the necessary software needed for improved learning. As technology becomes more important for research, communication, and collaboration, our students will be well-prepared for future studies.

CALLING ON COLLEGES GETS A BOOST Through the “College Call” at Auction 2014, over $70,000 was raised in support of the College Counseling program. Each year, the College Counseling team works closely with students and their parents to find the most appropriate higher education match for each student. The team also connects with Deans of Admission throughout the country to explain why our students are deserving of careful consideration. These efforts take time and energy. Auction donors contributing to the College Call will enable us to invite more Deans for campus visits next year, to send our college counselors to more universities, and to enhance the overall marketing of the School to colleges.
