A COMMUNITY THAT GIVES Dear Friends, Ask any student, parent, faculty or staff member, or alumnus about their most lasting memories of St. Anne’s-Belfield School and without a doubt the relationships developed here will be mentioned. Whether it’s lifelong friends among our “sandbox kids” or meaningful mentorship from a caring faculty member, it is the people of the St. Anne’s-Belfield community who bring energy and enthusiasm to each of our days.

When I think of our Annual Fund, it is this vibrant community that comes to mind. At its most basic level, our Annual Fund is people helping people, a shining example of our community coming together to “close the gap” between what a School education costs per student and what is covered by tuition payments. Last year, with the support of our community members who raised $1.4 million, we were able to provide each Maria Gall with daughters Leah Gall '31 and Ali Gall '34. student with a personalized educational experience, one that our faculty and staff members are proud to provide, our parents treasure for their families, and our alumni so often credit as the foundation of their career and personal successes. This issue of Impact once again celebrates our Annual Fund, while highlighting other philanthropic achievements.

I hope the pride I feel in our community as both an administrator and parent of two young students is shared by all who have helped to create and sustain such a wonderful School. Together, our 2017 – 2018 fundraising efforts supported activities in our classrooms and auditoriums, on our courts, fields, and stages, and even took our students across the world on summer international travel. Truly, each of you who has contributed, especially our many volunteers who donated countless hours of time and talent, has been a real difference maker in the educational experiences of our students. For this and so much more, we thank you.

Annual Fund Reunion Giving Awards The Malone Cup - Class of 1968 Established as a tribute to the class with the highest percentage of donors to the Annual Fund. The cup is named for Pamela Malone, a beloved teacher who dedicated 34 years to enriching the lives of St. Anne's-Belfield School students.

Full-time teaching faculty made a gift to the 2017 - 2018 Annual Fund

The Peter V. R. Weeks Award - Class of 1984 Named in memory of senior master Peter Weeks, who served as assistant headmaster, athletic director, coach, teacher, mentor, role model, and counselor for students and teachers alike between 1961 - 1981. The award recognizes the highest level of giving participation from the classes of the 1970s and 1980s.

The Randolph Murray Bowl - Class of 1982 Honors a dedicated alumna, Bruce Randolph Murray '65, who with her family has given generously of her time, talent, and treasures for decades. The award is given to the reunion class with the largest total gift.

The Young Alumni Participation Award - Class of 2005 Recognizes the class within 14 years of graduation having the greatest level of participation in the Annual Fund.

Traditions of Giving Sustainer's Society The Sustainer's Society celebrates donors who have given gifts to the School for 20 or more consecutive years. Following the 2017 - 2018 school year, we gratefully acknowledge Mrs. Gertrude Coe Baskerville '51, Mrs. Sarah Hormel Everett '82 & Mr. J. FALL 2018

A Decade of Doug’s Trip In April 2018, the entire St. Anne’s-Belfield School freshman class traveled to Martin, Ky. for the tenth annual Doug’s Trip.

Working with the Christian Appalachia Project (CAP), students spent the week engaged in construction projects from the "Grow Appalachia" community garden, in which they improved soil in the high tunnel greenhouse, designed and built tables and a community lending library, and undertook various gardening projects, to working on Camp Shawnee improving facilities for the Appalachian children who might not otherwise be able to attend a summer camp, to upgrading handicapped access to private residences. Organized by Dr. Bob Troy, Upper School science, students prepared for their work by attending a skills camp to learn basic hand tools and undertaking fundraising to support their travel.

"Doug's Trip is an incredible School tradition," said Peter Quagliaroli, head of the Upper School. "Not only does the freshman class come together to work cooperatively in the service of others, but students are able to experience another culture, travel to another region of the country, and reflect in real time on what they are experiencing and how they have grown. Such a purposeful approach to community service is truly reflective of the School's core values of integrity, curiosity, diversity, creativity, agency, and impact."

Begun in 2009, Doug's Trip was a gift from the Class of 2008, named in memory of their classmate Douglas Robert Wardle who passed away unexpectedly while on a service trip in Nicaragua in August 2007. That first year, the ninth grade traveled to Pass Christian, Miss. to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. Over the years, School students have returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast as well as traveled to the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky.

Sophie Gibson ‘12, Upper School humanities and art teacher, was a student on the very first Doug’s Trip and had the pleasure of being involved again a decade later, last spring.

“The (first) trip took place in 2009, four years after Katrina hit, so most of the individuals and families we were assisting had been waiting a long time for support,” remembered Gibson.

“Much of the work I remember doing was rubble clean-up. One day, my small group cleaned off a concrete foundation where a home had once stood on the edge of water. The entire structure had been torn from its base during the hurricane. Buried under branches were some relics of domestic life; I remember finding a spoon. We sawed a lot of logs, cleared brush, swept. I am not sure if the woman who had owned that home was planning on rebuilding there, but she showed us how much our work meant to her by taking us to her smoothie store at the end of our work day and making us all smoothies. Then she gave us all hugs . . .

Doug’s Trip has touched the lives of Upper School students for 10 years. With the support of our community, it is set to continue to have an impact on both the School and broader community for years to come.

“So much good has come from Doug’s legacy,” remarked Gibson. “I think these kinds of experiences make our students kinder, more empathetic people.”

Everett ‘82 Funds Upper School Academic Specialist Position Alumna Sarah Everett ‘82 and her husband Tommy, parents of three current and former students, recently made a significant contribution to fund the Upper School Academic & Learning Support Specialist for the next three years. This position works with the Upper School faculty to differentiate curricula in order to address diverse learning needs, inspiring and educating faculty members on strategies for flexible teaching that engages multiple learning styles.

For Everett, who assumed the role of president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors this year, this gift is one of many ways she has contributed to the School for more than three decades.

“I started giving to the School fresh out of college,” she remembered. “My first gift was ten dollars. It wasn’t a lot, but I remember the letter of gratitude from the School making me feel I had made a difference. Today, I am excited to give to the School. I believe any gift is significant and I would encourage my fellow alumni to visit and reconnect. There are amazing things happening and there are traditions that are alive and well!”

THE TECHNOLOGY FUND In the past three years, the Technology Fund has provided more than $435,000 in software, hardware, network upgrades, and equipment to bring our campuses and classrooms to the forefront of 21st Century learning. Here is an overview of the fund and some of the items recently provided:

Technology is naturally embedded into the classroom every day, and can be a part of how we teach instead of what we teach.

As a part of the 1:1 Program, each Grades K – 6 student has access to an individual device for their own use, enabling them to be active creators rather than passive consumers of technology.”
