SUMMER 2017
DEAR FRIENDS, We want to thank you for helping to change ours and our peers’ lives. Because of gifts like yours, we can get the most out of our education at St. Anne’s-Belfield School. Our student body, from two-year-olds in the Pre-School to our fellow Upper School students, utilizes donor gifts like yours each day we walk the halls and sidewalks. We live and learn in the heart of your support. We use it in the science and computer labs when we learn about compounds and new software. We see it on the field when we compete in athletic events. We feel it when we are performing on stage in front of our friends and family. Because of your gifts, we get to be the best students we can be. Because of your gifts, learning is fun and our time on these campuses is something we won’t ever forget. And for that, we thank you. Sincerely,
Junho Moon ‘17 & Evans Van Liew ‘17 Student Body Presidents
5,000 WORDS If a photograph is worth 1,000 words, here are 5,000 on what our students do best: learn, create, perform, and explore. All due in part to the gifts donors give to the School.

MAKING HISTORY, MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Parents and alumni make huge impact on School community through restricted gifts. CLIFF FLEET ‘88 This spring, Cliff Fleet ‘88 and his wife, Fran Zemmel, have made a significant gift to the Raise We Our Voices campaign in support of teaching excellence. The Emily Chewning Excellence in Teaching Endowed Chair, named in memory of Cliff’s mother and long time faculty member at the School, will support salary and professional development for a chosen faculty member in the sciences, awarded on a rotating basis. The School is incredibly grateful for this gift. It is the largest single gift from an alumnus on record, and the first current gift used to endow a teaching chair. The School is excited to award the first chair in fall 2017 and benefit from this gift for years to come.

THE MASON FAMILY Two current parents, John and Holly Mason, made a significant gift to the School in memory of a former student whose death affected the entire School community five years ago. Hanz Ellis, a grade five student at the time, passed away in October 2012. He was much loved by all and is still remembered and missed by his classmates who are currently in grade 10. Working with David Jones and the faculty, the Mason’s gift will be used to create an experience for grade five students modeled on Doug’s Trip, the grade nine service project taken each spring. The project is being developed now to be introduced in the 2017 2018 year. Students will have an overnight bonding experience aimed to give back to the community.

BILL BLACKFORD ESTATE A gift from the estate of longtime supporter Bill Blackford has been used to create a scholarship to support the School’s golf team. The gift helps provide financial assistance to members of the team who otherwise could not afford to participate in the team’s Spring Break trip. This year, the golf team and coaches Blake Ware and Matt McNicoll traveled to Pinehurst, NC. The team played multiple times, including on the legendary Pinehurst #2 golf course, which is considered one of the top courses in the world. “It was an incredible trip,” said Ware. “The team was able to experience the feeling of playing on some of the best golf courses in America, and their shared experience brought them closer together as a unit. That will help us throughout the year as we participate in team competitions across Virginia.”

Raise We Our Voices Brings New Faces to Campus Raise We Our Voices campaign allows School to forge new partnerships and learning opportunities, bringing new students and teachers to campus. UPENN TEACHING FELLOWS PROGRAM
KENYA SCHOLARS
Beginning in the fall of 2017, St. Anne’s-Belfield will invite one pre-service teacher to apply for an internship specifically designed for pre-service independent school educators. The program is a selective partnership between a consortium of independent schools (of which the School is a member) and the University of Pennsylvania, creating the Penn Residency Master’s in Teaching program (PRMT). A PRMT fellow at St. Anne’s-Belfield teaches two sections of the same course, works closely with the mentor with whom they share a common class preparation, regularly observes classes taught by the mentor and other colleagues, and attends gatherings of all new teachers to the School.
Two students, Melvin Kanaiza and Vitalis Wekesa, will be joining St. Anne’s-Belfield School from Kenya in the 2017 – 2018 academic year. Both hailing from Nairobi’s Bridge International Academy, the students will be the recipients of proceeds of a new Bridge International Academies Fund, generously established at the School by an anonymous donor as part of the School's Raise We Our Voices campaign dedicated to promoting access and maintaining teaching excellence. The students were competitively chosen among a pool of outstanding applicants, and will join the Residential Life program at the School for the next four years.

OUR
ANNUAL
DONOR Q & A:
FUND
JENN
UPDATE
CRUTCHFIELD ‘02 ABOUT JENN
Annual Fund donors ensure that our teachers and students have the resources they need to thrive in an ever-evolving education landscape. Each year, our teachers and students set new, ambitious goals for themselves and, in turn, our Annual Fund must also set new goals.
Graduation Year: 2002 Current Job Title & Company: Corporate Responsibility Lead, Adobe, San Francisco, CA
This year, we are aiming to raise $1.456 million. To date, donors have responded generously and 82 percent of the goal has been met. Between now and June 30, we are counting on alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends who have not given to this year’s campaign (July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017) to make a commitment.
Donor Profile: 7 consecutive years giving, utilizes corporate matching gift program, and Malone Society member Why is St. Anne’s-Belfield School important to you? St. Anne’s-Belfield was academically rigorous, and yet I found our teachers walked a fine line between pushing me on areas of weakness and encouraging me to find my passion and try new things. My Advanced Placement U.S. History teacher, Mrs. Anne Behrend, was absolutely incredible. Growing up in Charlottesville, in the shadow of Monticello and the University of Virginia, I’ve always been interested in history, and she made it come alive in a way I had never experienced. As a result, I went on to become a U.S. History major at U.Va. As someone who was a bit more reserved, the small class sizes that St. Anne’s-Belfield provided were critical for my development, and helped me to come out of my shell. When I think about what motivates me to support the School, the small class sizes and the ability to easily meet with professors and have them directly engage in my education was instrumental in me later succeeding at U.Va. and ultimately at Darden.

years later, I would be working for Adobe, and my love of photography would be stronger than ever! Lastly, the School provided a level of diversity of mind that I truly appreciated. It was one of the first times I was exposed to other religions and belief systems. I found it fascinating to have those from different denominations lead our weekly Chapels. It was eye-opening and helped expand my mind and prepare me for down the road. What would you say to someone who is considering giving to the School? Personally, I believe in giving it forward to the next generation. I appreciate what St. Anne’s-Belfield is doing around diversity and inclusion, and hope that the work to make the classroom more diverse continues, allowing those who may not have had as many opportunities as I had to experience our school, grow, and hopefully build fond memories of their own.
What’s your fondest memory as a student? It’s hard for me to choose just one! One of them would’ve been from when I was on the tennis team. I was definitely not the star, yet it was such a fun experience, and as a transfer student, a great way to meet others. From road trips (and stops at Ukrops), to sitting on the sidelines talking with some of the other girls, tennis became a lifelong hobby.
When I first graduated from college and moved to New York City, I was working for a nonprofit with a limited salary. However, one thing that I did learn was the value of matching grants. With the encouragement of my manager, I began donating $20 a year to the School, and had this matched. I soon realized that I did not miss the funds, and was able to gradually increase my educational donations as jobs changed over the last decade, always making sure to have these funds matched along the way.
Additionally, I discovered my love of photography while at the School. This led to my first camera, an old Nikon from the 1980s that I still have to this day, and many, many photographs later, I still reference some of the tricks that we learned after hours in the dark room. I never would have known that 15
Matching grants are critical for many nonprofits and institutions, including the School, and are something that many people forget to apply for after giving their yearly donation. It doesn’t matter what size gift it is, your impact is doubled instantly by your company.

LEADING THE WAY:
Faculty Hosting Summer Computer Science Institute School faculty members to host the Learn to Learn IV: Computer Science Institute for teachers from all over the Charlottesville area. In keeping with the School’s dedication to providing access and ensuring teaching excellence, two faculty members are leading the charge for the Learn to Learn IV: Computer Science Institute this summer. Raise We Our Voices makes it possible to expand this institute to include other local teachers. Teachers of all grades from not just St. Anne’s-Belfield, but all around the Charlottesville region and beyond, have been invited to a free two-day, hands-on workshop event July 27 - 28 to learn new computer science skills and tools. The institute aims to be a learn- and create-a-thon for educators wanting to learn about integrating computer science into their classroom and create computer science-infused lesson plans. The workshop is being facilitated by St. Anne’-Belfield faculty Kim Wilkens and Zach Minster (pictured below), who have led the ground-breaking Computer Science Initiative at the School powered by philanthropic gifts. The institute is inspired by the School’s own Hackathon, a two-day event for students to immerse themselves in learning tech and solving real-world problems with their newfound skills. WILL YOU BE
1 OF THE 100?
Alumni philanthropy can help ensure Junho and Evans and all our students continue to experience the many wonderful opportunities within the St. Anne's-Belfield educational experience. It is essential to ensuring traditions that have always defined us, such as small classes and strong teacher-student relationships, remain foundations of St. Anne’s-Belfield School as we simultaneously move forward as a leader in 21st century education. The Malone Society, named in honor of beloved teacher and mentor Pamela Malone, was created as a way to empower alumni to accomplish this vision. Malone Society members are alumni leaders at the forefront of change who make cumulative gifts of $1,000 or more. In its inaugural year, we hope 100 of our dedicated alumni will rally behind this important effort and join between July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017 as founding members. Founding members will be recognized on a commemorative plaque on the Greenway Rise Campus. Become a member today on your PayPal app or at www.stab.org/give.
