students. In the most recent fiscal year, the School established specific outlets within the Annual Fund to allow donors to direct their unrestricted gift in support of specific operating fund priorities: financial aid, athletics, the arts, academic programs, and faculty professional development. While most donors choose to direct their gift to the

School’s area of greatest need, many donors chose to support specific areas of interest to them. We are grateful to the dozens of parent and alumni volunteers who worked to engage others and urge their philanthropic support of the School. Each of them should feel proud of their work to achieve these incredible results.

GIVING AWARDS

T

he School is proud to announce the winners of the alumni giving awards:

• In 1998, the Malone Cup was established as a tribute to the class with the highest percentage of donors to the Annual Fund. The cup is named for Pamela Malone, a beloved teacher who dedicated 34 years to enriching the lives of St. Anne’s-Belfield School students. This year’s winner is the Class of 2016, which achieved a 40.4 percent participation rate as a result

of a dedicated effort to better prepare students for their roles as alumni. • The Peter V. R. Weeks Award is named in memory of a senior master, Peter Weeks, who served as assistant headmaster, athletic director, coach, teacher, mentor, role model, and counselor for students and teachers alike between 1961 - 1981. The award recognizes the highest level of giving participation from the classes of the 1970s and 1980s. Congratulations to the Class of 1984 for winning this year’s Weeks Award.

• The Randolph Murray Bowl honors a dedicated alumna, Bruce Randolph Murray ’65, who with her family has given generously of her time, talent, and treasures for decades. The award is given to the reunion class with the largest total gift, this year, the Class of 1986. • The Young Alumni Participation Award recognizes the class within 14 years of graduation having the greatest level of participation in the Annual Fund. This year’s winner is the Class of 2016.

Students Explore More with Annual Fund Support!

O

f course, one of the primary goals of an education is to expand a student’s perspectives beyond their everyday experiences. These learning opportunities help students learn more about the world and also about themselves as they delve deep into subjects of interest. Students at St. Anne’s-Belfield School have many more opportunities for exploration and hands on learning than they did just a few years ago. For two years, the School has offered Intensives to Upper School students. During the three weeks between Thanksgiving and the Holiday Break, students study a single subject of their choosing, with topics ranging from "Issues of Race, Gender, and Social Justice" to "The Teenage Brain."

Meanwhile, in the Learning Village, seventh and eighth grade students are taking part in Quests, a class that allows them to explore subjects of interest to them. WINTER 2016

Alumni

A

ALUMNI CAME OUT TO SHOW THE LOVE AND TAKE PART IN THE DAY OF GIVING

lumni showed an extra level of support through two events, the “Show the Love” effort in February and the Day of Giving on May 18. During the Show the Love campaign, alumni made gifts to the Annual Fund in honor or memory of their favorite teachers and classmates. In all, 112 alumni donated almost $31,375 to help the School. The Day of Giving on May 18 was a special day designed to elicit alumni support on social media and to raise support especially among young alumni (those graduating after 2002). More than 600 people took part in the campaign by sharing videos and encouraging their friends to remember their time at St. Anne’s-Belfield School.

support innovation and learning in the classroom. Many people know the organization through the events it hosts, including the Fine Arts Dinner, Concert, and Wearable Art Runway Show (December 2016), A Capella Fest (March 2017), and the school-wide Art Show (April 2017). And they do even more, including supporting visiting artists, helping fund equipment purchases and recordings of our ensembles, and commissioning the Children’s Opera that was performed by the Learning Village

The arts are thriving at the School. The orchestras are fine-tuning their instruments and stringing musical notes, the choirs are preparing their voices to a melodious sound, the art students are brushing up to create a masterpiece, and the performers in drama are memorizing lines and getting ready for opening night. STAB Fab embraces the many forms of art in the School and continues to

students last year. This year, STAB Fab is proud to partner with the School to bring artist, John Rubino to work cooperatively with all students to create a sculpture that will be displayed in the Chandler Courtyard on the Belfield Campus. STAB Fab is excited to embrace the art programs in the School and help children appreciate the fine and performing arts in our community. Thank you for your support and allowing the School to keep the arts front and center!

ANNOUNCING THE MALONE SOCIETY The School is pleased to announce the creation of a new giving society specifically for alumni, the Malone Society, named in honor of longtime faculty member and mentor Pamela Malone. The following alumni each contributed $1,000 or more to support the School during the past fiscal year. The School gratefully acknowledges these alumni and encourages other alumni to follow the example set by their classmates and friends. Ms. Carol L. Anderson ‘66 2)

BLACKFORD FUND HONORS LONGTIME SUPPORTER BILL BLACKFORD

H

ow do you honor a loved one with your gift?

The School lost a strong supporter when Bill Blackford passed away in 2014. Bill and his wife Victoria (Tory) Kerewich Blackford '70 had supported the School through the Annual Fund and also through the Campaign for the Next Century. The Blackford Seminar Room in the Scott Center for the Arts and Sciences is named for them. Bill included a gift to the School in his estate plans, and Tory hoped to find a way to use the gift to support the School and also acknowledge Bill.

As a result, the School has created the William S. Blackford Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarship assistance to one or more students, with preference for students participating in the St. Anne’s-Belfield School golf program who have demonstrated financial need so they may participate in trips and activities related to the golf program and/or receive general tuition assistance. The creation of the Blackford Fund is another example of ways to honor loved ones and fulfill School priorities. If you would like to honor your loved ones through a gift to the School, please contact Bruce Cauthen, director of donor relations and annual giving, at bcauthen@stab.org.

The Blackford Fund was established in memory of William S. Blackford, pictured above with his wife Tory at the U.S. Open in 2006 at Winged Foot.

Athletic Boosters Raise Money for School Needs

E

ach year, parents come together to support the Athletic Boosters. This vital group provides additional resources for the School’s athletic teams outside of the operating budget. The Athletic Boosters engage the community in supporting the School’s athletic teams by purchasing items that our coaches, PE teachers, and athletic trainers desire to enhance our students’ athletic, fitness and school spirit experience. This support takes many forms, including: •

Purchasing new fitness and training equipment in

• • • •

the CCC training room Purchasing an athletic cart for medical equipment to support students on fields and playgrounds Purchasing a portable ice system for student athletes Contributing to the lightening detection system and AEDs to keep students safe Operating concession stands at home sports events

Athletic Boosters is looking for ways to expand its role at the School. Working with the School’s new Director of Athletics Dewayne Robinson, the Boosters hope to

create a culture in which everyone feels they are part of the athletic community whether they play on a team, cheer on student-athletes, engage in fitness, or love to work in the concession stand. A big part of the group’s mission is to engage students and to have them take ownership in supporting the goals that will ultimately benefit their experience at St. Anne’s-Belfield School. Stay tuned for more news about the Athletic Boosters and their efforts to make the School even more exciting!

Each year, the Athletics Boosters host Fall Family Picnic, a beloved tradition that invites members of the community for a night of fun, food, and athletic support.

1910 Society Have you considered including St. Anne’s-Belfield School in your estate plans? The 1910 Society recognizes those who have done so, and we are happy to report that over the past six months, the School has received notice of three generous planned gifts made by alumni. One of those gifts, from Carolyn Sanders ’48, is currently supporting Artist-in-Residence John Rubino, who is working with students to create a sculpture for the Learning Village Chandler Courtyard, among other things. Her gift is really making a difference. If you plan to make an estate gift to the School, please let us know. We hope your example will prompt others to make their own plans. For more information about the 1910 Society, please visit the school’s website, www.stab.org/plannedgiving or contact Bruce Cauthen at bcauthen@stab.org. Thank you! M. Frederica Bacher

School Educators Present at London MozFest For three days in late October, St. Anne's-Belfield School technology educators Kim Wilkens, Zach Minster, and Michele Mathieson traveled to London, England to take part in Mozilla Festival 2016, more commonly known as MozFest. "I've been involved with Mozilla's #teachtheweb movement for several years now, taking advantage of the tools they have created and the community they have built in my teaching practice," said Kim Wilkens, computer science coordinator and instructor for grades K – 8, as well as founder of local non-profit Tech-Girls. Described as "the world's leading festival for the open internet movement," MozFest attracts students, educators, professionals, and tech enthusiasts from around the world. "I like to think of the Mozilla community as a reflection of the Internet: Creative. Eclectic. Speaking many languages, spanning many disciplines, always open to new ideas," wrote Mark Surman, Mozilla executive director in his welcome note. In addition to "space wrangling," Wilkens co-presented a workshop on Computer Science Meets the Classroom with Zach Minster, computer science coordinator and instructor for grades 5 – 12 along with another educator based in Chicago.

14

"I met many inspiring educators from around the world engaged in similar initiatives around the world, and was able to trade ideas and inspiration with them," noted Minster. Michele Mathieson, Learning Village technology resource coordinator, also presented FAB Lab: Teaching Web Literacy Through Student Choice. "The idea behind the presentation was to showcase our FAB Lab program and help other educators begin to start setting up similar programs and to make international connections," she said. "The participants for my session had diverse backgrounds, there were only two traditional educators in the audience along with an Australian journalist, UK robotics creator, Google coder, Australian computer science outreach coordinator, and American social scientist. The presentation took the turn towards broader conversations about education and how FAB Lab-type programs could be integrated in very prescribed school systems. In addition, the value of international connections for children was discussed and all participants 'signed up' to connect with our FAB Lab students to discuss their expertise when students chose topics with which they could help." Alongside the workshops and presentations by St. Anne's-

Kim Wilkens and Michele Mathieson were two of three faculty members who traveled to London, England to take part in professional development opportunity Mozilla Festival 2016.

Belfield School teachers, the MozFest schedule included spaces and thematic learning hubs on digital arts and culture, journalism, open science, localization, a hands-on youth zone, and more. St. Anne's-Belfield's computer science program is funded primarily by private gifts to the School. To support the program with a matching gift, please contact us at www. stab.org/give.

School Launches Raise We Our Voices Campaign FOR STUDENT ACCESS & TEACHING EXCELLENCE The School launched Raise We Our Voices this past

summer as the culmination of the current strategic plan. Its focus is on generating support for two areas of critical importance to the School: financial aid and teaching excellence. St. Anne’s-Belfield School’s historical strengths are its bright, energetic students and faculty who engage young minds and teach them to become exceptional citizens. Raise We Our Voices will help ensure that these critical components of our educational experience will remain in perpetuity.

This year’s operating budget includes more than $5 million in tuition assistance for almost 40 percent of students. Teaching excellence is just as important. Approximately 75 percent of the School‘s operating budget goes toward salaries and benefits, and these expenses are expected to increase at a faster rate than the overall inflation rate, as competition for the most qualified teachers increases each year. To address these needs, the School’s Raise We Our Voices

campaign is designed to secure gifts to endowed and restricted current-use funds. Gifts to endowed funds are designed to generate interest earnings which will help the School. For more information about Raise We Our Voices, please visit the School’s website, www.stab.org/ raiseweourvoices or contact Warren Buford at wbuford@stab.org.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: CORTEZ ANDERSON '24

F

or Cortez Anderson '24, one of the new students joining the School this year, a few new favorites have already been firmly cemented in just his first trimester. "I love English and history," Cortez said when asked about favorite classes, noting that a recent discussion of the differences between immigrants and refugees stuck with him long after the class ended.

"I play the violin in the orchestra," he said. "I already woke my dad up with it." One thing that isn't new for Cortez this year is the Percy Jackson books he found in the Legner Learning Village Library. He's read the entire series six times, and has set a goal of reading it for a seventh this year.

"I told my dad the weeks aren't long enough. I love it here, I want more school!"

"And I also love science, I like the different experiments and I hope we get to do more this year." In addition to starting at a new school, Cortez has also recently moved into town and is excited about going bike riding and watching Angry Birds with new neighborhood friends. He's also enjoying a fifth grade tradition at the School: playing in the orchestra.

"It's always nice when new members get added to the family," said David Jones, fifth grade teacher and advisor. "Cortez brings a lot of energy and strong enthusiasm to science class each day. I'm anticipating a fun year!" Looking ahead Cortez is excited for the rest of the school year and all of the new events and activities that will come with it.

New to St. Anne's-Belfield this year, Cortez Anderson '24 embraces learning with a love for English, history, and orchestra, and gets the most out of his education.

"I told my dad the weeks aren't long enough," he said. "I love it here, I want more school!"

WINTER 2016

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GIFTS AT WORK

An Example of Philanthropy in Action

E

ach year, virtually all of the School’s faculty and staff are able to improve their skills through a wide variety of professional development opportunities. The School’s past several biennial auctions have provided most of the required resources, but Annual Fund gifts and restricted donations are also important sources of funds to support these programs.

There's always a new perspective on the School's beautiful campus. This one is courtesy of a drone flown by one of our students. Visit www. vimeo. com/stab365 to see videos of each campus.

20162017 PARENT ANNUAL FUND COMMITTEE

Through the financial support of the School, seventh grade teacher Marie Reed attended Project Zero, a four-day conference in Washington, D.C., in October. Led by a research team from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, Project Zero was founded nearly 50 years ago, originally focused its research efforts on arts education in the United States. Researchers in the collaborative aimed to explore and document the cognitive benefits of the arts. Since that time, Project Zero has become a leader in research and instruction on “the nature of intelligence, understanding, thinking,

creativity, cross-disciplinary and crosscultural thinking, and ethics” (Project Zero). Building on partnerships with the Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE), the National Gallery of Art, and Washington International School, Project Zero used the city as its classroom, and how the classrooms prime young people for civil discourse. Reed attended sessions on crafting poetry in the National Gallery, researching World War I in the Library of Congress, and teaching for the 21st century. She worked alongside educators from New Zealand, China, South Africa, Spain, and Belgium. The abundant resources of the capital and the wide-ranging perspectives of other educators resulted in a weekend full of conversation and reflection about what learning matters. Throughout the conference, Reed was reminded that the arts provide opportunities for students to slow down, listen and look carefully, wonder, and question.

Project Zero was founded nearly 50 years ago to study and improve education in the arts.

“I have often incorporated arts in my teaching, but now I am beginning to consider the arts as an entry point for students who are developing their ability to listen and dialogue, skills that are essential for learning and for the health of our community,” Reed said. Reed’s experience is shared by many others at the School who learn better ways each year to engage young minds. Thank you to the many donors who helped to make these professional development programs possible!
