WEARABLE ARTS RUNWAY SHOW Featuring Elements of Sound

January 20, 2024 2PM & 7PM Student Activity Center

The Wearable Arts Runway Show was started in 2006 by former St. Anne’s-Belfield School art teacher Randy Bill when students could take the Arts Construction class as an elective. Over the years, the show has become an extracurricular event that has featured between 25 – 73 participants and hosted hundreds of attendees. The Runway Show brings together a diverse student population who are able to showcase their ingenuity and creativity by constructing a garment made with non-traditional materials. It provides an opportunity for students who are interested in the arts, engineering, fashion, and sustainability to express their individuality through project-based learning. Students work on their garments at after-school and weekend workshops, hosted in the Lourie Learning Center (LLC). Workshops also include sessions with a choreographer to gain confidence and stage presence. Annie Temmink ’07 is a professional artist and a UVA lecturer who has been working with runway students since 2019. She initially participated in runway for three years before graduating from St. Anne’s-Belfield in 2007. Runway was part of what inspired her current career: making elaborate headwear, giant creatures, and immersive installations. She loves supporting students as they navigate their own sense of self-expression and shine on the runway. Blair McAvoy teaches computer science and the new Technology, Engineering, and Design course in the Upper School. This is her second year teaching at St. Anne's-Belfield and her first year as faculty advisor to the Runway Show. The Wearable Arts Runway show is a special and unique part of the history of our School. As an extracurricular that does not require a participation fee, all expenses are funded entirely by donations. Thank you to everyone who made this year's show possible!
