welcome
“A Gathering Pl ace” Aiken, South Carolina
Welcome to Stable View. The event that you are competing in / watching today has come about, and is our response, to not being able to run the National divisions with the FEI event four weeks ago. Hopefully, in the future we will be able to run them on a combined basis. When we applied for this date, we knew that you had a choice – its Kentucky weekend! That’s the bad news. The good news is that next year, with Kentucky rolling forward a week, this HT will be one week prior to Kentucky. Recently, there’s been a lot going on at Stable View. If you weren’t at the Aiken Opener – we have a new arena. This will be in use this weekend. In terms of additional events for your calendar, please don’t forget the 2021 Area 3 Championships which this year are being combined with our Summer Horse Trials on 25th, 26th and 27th June. Please also don’t forget that we are hosting the 2021 TIP Championships on 8th, 9, and 10th October – this event incorporates H/J’s and Dressage and is open to all owners of Off the Track Thoroughbreds. It’s good that you’re here, and, as we always say, be safe. Regards, Barry and Cyndy and the entire Stable View Team

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
SUSAN (SUE) A. STEEVES Spending time as a cross country jump judge or as a dressage steward or preparing lunches for volunteers and officials are such a wonderful ways to be part of the Aiken, SC, equestrian community. Stable View Farm has given me those opportunities among others. In a way, it’s taken my life full circle. The story that my dad told, and that I’ve often repeated, is that when I was 3 years old I asked for a horse. My dad said I could have my first horse when he had his first million. For Christmas, just two weeks before my 14th birthday, Danny, a bay 57-variety breed standing 15.2, came into my life. My dad never got his first million. Since then I’ve always had a horse. Horses have seen me through marriages, divorces, good jobs and bad, lots of moving. In the process, I’ve been fortunate to work with some top people including Carol Kozlowski and Charles de Kunffy. Though I spent half of my time at Michigan State University in the College of Veterinary Medicine my degree is in journalism. For about 20 years, I was a reporter, editor and photographer for newspapers, news services and magazines, including as associate editor of one on Thoroughbred breeding and racing. The rest of my career I spent working at large universities where I wrote news releases and magazine articles about molecular research for the health both humans and our four-legged pals. In those jobs my long-ago science background and my experience with horses served me well. Retirement has given me a new passion – volunteering. Stable View has allowed me to broaden my knowledge of eventing and dressage, and to see many incredible riders, including Boyd Martin and Doug Payne. I’ve met wonderful people through my volunteer time at this beautiful, scenic property. Every time I go to Stable View I learn something and I see another upgrade that the facility has undergone. It’s a pleasure to help hold the top-notch competitions offered by Stable View and watch and meet competitors and other horse enthusiasts from throughout the country. 10

OFFICIAL SPOTLIGHT
BETH WHEELER It takes some adjustments to take off your competitor’s hat and put on an official’s hat. After several years of competing and seeing all the effort and volunteers that were needed to put on a HT, I decided it was time to give back. During this time, I met my husband and trainer/ instructor extraordinaire, Ray Wheeler. Eventually we were asked to be on the board of the Marlborough HT which is in my old stomping grounds in Maryland. At one of the HT, the Stadium Course designer didn’t show up and Ray and I took over the job. We continued serving on the board and setting up Stadium for the next 10 years until we moved to Aiken. Moving to Aiken allowed me the opportunity to attend the eventing training sessions which can be anywhere in the country. It was nerve wracking and exhilarating at the same time... similiar to showing. I couldn’t have gotten my USEF “r” Judges license and eventually my “R” without the financial help of my mom and the support Ray gave me at home and at the barn. It’s just like working as a team at a competition. You’ve got a good group of people and you all work to put together to achieve success. Being a judge has been such an honor and a privilege. I have such respect for the horses. I continue to learn and be amazed by them. And my fellow officials have my respect too. The collective desire to do the right thing for the sport and those who compete in it reminds me daily why I chose this path.

What is Eventing? Also known as "Horse Trials", this demanding sport is comprised of 3 phases: dressage, cross country, and show jumping. The same rider and horse must compete in all 3 phases. Scores from the phases are combined so the winner is the rider with the best overall score. Dressage: The first phase is always dressage, a series of suppling and strengthening exercises performed in a flat, enclosed arena. Dressage develops the horse’s submission and responsiveness to perform a pattern of intricate movements. This is the fundamental training of the sport upon which the two jumping phases are built.
Cross-Country: Cross-country is the cornerstone of Eventing, and tests the speed, endurance, boldness and jumping ability of the horse over varied terrain and solid obstacles. The jumps may be natural obstacles such as water, banks, ditches and drops. Cross-country is ridden at a gallop with speed requirements dependent upon the level of difficulty of the division. Show Jumping: This phase tests the same horse and rider’s precision over a course of brightly painted fences with rails that can easily be knocked down. Show jumping tests the stamina, precision, and recovery of the horse. 18
