welcome

“A G ath er i ng P l ace” Aiken, South Carolina

New Arenas to use, a Spring is here and our Boarders are just about to leave. It’s a shame; they create a different type of village at Stable View for three months - we’ll miss them. We brought in some additional stalls for them as their businesses are growing. You also have noticed, Aiken is busy. Our Events are getting 10% to 15% more entries this year, and entry numbers at other facilities are up too. The Showcase at Bruce’s Field was a success and seems likely to be repeated next year as well. At Stable View we are considering what we should do. We could have a Showcase. We’re also considering running a Nations Cup, and there’s some talk of introducing a Gold Cup Series. As we say, Aiken is busy, and it’s future looks bright. Our Spring HT entries are significantly higher than last year, which again shows that competition is good and is creating an environment where we all have to raise our game. For today, Mogie’s Cross Country Course is a little more demanding than her first few Courses this year and Chris Barnard, fresh from Florida, will be working his designer magic in the Outdoor Arena. The Preliminary and Intermediate tracks are the first designed by Captain Mark Phillips at Stable View this year. There’s also a lot of non-Equestrian stuff going on here. Our Red Cockaded Woodpecker Program is now in full swing with 15 new nest boxes countersunk into Long Leaf Pines, one of which is over 150 years old. We hope to exceed last years fledgling of Blue Birds - our target this year is 100. Then there’s the Kestrels and the Screech Owls. So, for us too this is a busy time. If you like visiting, you’re a Rider, or you just want to hang out, don’t forget all of the other events that we have going on at Stable View. Just take a look at stableviewfarm.com. In case you are not aware, next year this event will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 27-28.The format will be FEI 1*, 2*, 3* and 4*. This will be Aiken’s first FEI Event during the Season. Full Gallop will be running the National levels. If you are a returning visitor, welcome back. If you have not been here before, or if you have any questions please contact me at barry@stableviewfarm.com. While you are here, please take a look round - the Pavilion is open, take a look at the view. Most important though, be safe. Regards, Barry and Cyndy

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Suzanne Kaplan

I have always loved horses. When my son discovered horses around age 6 at the inn on a farm we visited every summer, I was pleased. He nagged me all the way home for riding lessons, and after our stay I found a stable near us on Boston’s North Shore. And thus began my career as a horse mom. I could not have envisioned where the journey would take me. I became transportation to lessons, ringside support, chief purchasing agent and cheering section. Lots of girls go through a “horse phase.” What I have noticed with boys is that it often is more than a phaseit is a life choice. The boy is now a man. My son, Michael Robbins, is a professional equestrian. He runs a boarding and training facility: MKR Equestrian out of New Meadow Farm in West Newbury, Massachusetts. I am no longer needed as a horse mom and haven’t been for many years.

“Volunteering is a way to still be involved with the horses I have always loved.”

So what does one do with the knowledge of equestrian pursuits when one retires from being a horse mom? I still wanted to be involved with Eventing so I took myself to the local USEA event and became a volunteer. I have been volunteering for many years; initially in Massachusetts and Vermont. I moved to Aiken in 2015 and began looking for volunteer opportunities shortly after. Michael had competed at the Winter Horse Trial at Stable View that year. He left to go back north at the end of the season and I had time after work commitments…so I started to volunteer at Stable View and other events in the Aiken area. In many ways I feel that Stable View is my volunteer “home.” I have seen the facility grow from my contact in 2015 to the still-growing facility it is now. I look forward to seeing the way the facility will change in the future. But what I really appreciate as a volunteer is the way I am welcomed every time I check-in for my assignments and am made to feel part of the team.

OFFICIAL SPOTLIGHT

James Gornall

James Gornall has a wealth of knowledge about the sport of Eventing from his 47 years as an Official. He always loved horses and grew up riding. In the earlier years of the sport, the lowest level offered was Preliminary and competitors had to be at least 16 years old. In 1963, Jim completed his first event after getting an age waiver signed to allow him to compete. Because the understanding of and compliance with the rules was so loose, Jim decided to get his TD license through the AHSA (now USEF) at the age of 21. At this time, there was no lengthy testing process to obtain an officials license. As a rider, Jim successfully competed through the Advanced level while also travelling as an official. He served as the Technical Delegate at many of the newer events and helped them become well-established competitions. In the 70s, Jim would TD as many as 35 events per year. Many times, he was the only official who knew the Eventing rules as the only other hired officials were dressage judges. He would work closely with organizers to design the courses because there were no licensed course designers. Jim takes great pride in having been able to watch the sport of Eventing grow up and change from its early beginnings as a military activity in the early 1900s to a popular civilian sport. He has seen the rules evolve, licensing programs form, and FEI events find their place on the US Eventing calendar. Now in the twilight of his career, he is always happy to see new officials come along. Jim works regularly with Official’s Continuing Education Programs in Vermont and North Carolina. He and his wife run a lessons and training business, though he no longer rides. They spend 5 months of the year in Massachusetts, 5 months in Aiken, and summers in Vermont. He continues to TD at a variety of venues and remains involved particularly in Areas I and III. 22
