How Do I Know if Vitamins and Minerals May Offer a Benefit to My Health? When it comes to vitamin and mineral supplements, the choices are endless, but are they right for everyone? The benefits of a nutritious, balanced diet and regular physical exercise can offer greater health benefits than taking vitamins and minerals for many individuals, according to Angelica Balingit, MD, board-certified internal medicine specialist. Here are the latest dietary guidelines for nutritious eating from the USDA: • A variety of vegetables from all subgroups (dark green, red and orange, legumes – beans and peas, and starchy vegetables like potatoes) • Fruits, especially whole fruits, like apples and grapes • Grains, especially whole grains, like whole-grain bread • Fat free or low-fat dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese, or fortified soy beverages) • Variety of proteins, including seafood, lean meats, poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds and soy products • Limit saturated fats, added sugars and sodium
Vitamin and mineral supplements may be necessary for some individuals In addition to a balanced diet and exercise, certain individuals may require specific vitamin and mineral supplements, as recommended by their doctor. According to Dr. Balingit, these individuals include: • Those on a restricted diet,
What are the dangers? Vitamins and minerals taken in excess can sometimes lead to dangerous health risks, says Dr. Balingit. These risks include a higher risk of cancer, heart disease, kidney stones, liver damage, stomach and intestinal issues, kidney disease, confusion and even death. Additionally, some vitamin supplements including omega 3 and vitamin E can pose bleeding risks to those on blood-thinning medications and to those undergoing surgery. Dr. Balingit adds that certain vitamin and mineral supplements can decrease the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

Adult Day Care Centers May Not Be What People Think Adult day care is a long-term care option designed to assist a person in maintaining their health, independence and dignity. Adult day care centers help people stay in their homes and avoid early placement in assisted living or nursing homes. Adult day care centers are physical places where people, can go, who feel lonely or who need care and help with activities of daily living. Adult Day Care Centers differ from nursing homes in that, members visit Adult Day Care centers during the day and return to their own homes at night. Day Care members need help but not the amount of care a nursing facility provides. Caregivers can benefit from Adult Day Care as well. Needing help, asking for help and providing help are can be difficult, leading to stress, loss of work and anxiety. Adult Day Care provides relief for family members and caregivers. It gives them the peace, to know their loved one is safe and happy at Adult Day Care while they work, rest and or take care of other business. In Oklahoma, Adult Day Care can be funded for through, DHS, Advantage Home Waiver, and Respite Vouchers, as well as private pay and some insurances. Patchwork Angels Adult Day Care Center. is a faith-based service-oriented organization that has been locally owned and successfully operated in Durant for 15 years. Patchwork Angels pioneered the use of the family home and child therapy models of care in adult day care centers in Oklahoma, as a significant treatment plan. These are especially beneficial for participants who feel isolated and those with cognitive impairment symptoms. The family home model of care as an approach to caregiving, may seem simple but is highly effective. Patchwork participants are treated as part of our extended family, when possible. To support this model of care, the center is arranged like a home, with a kitchen, office, a bedroom/sickroom, and a large living/dining room. Clients and staff eat meals, play games, do arts and crafts together and outings are taken as often as possible to area stores, restaurants and local events. Participants home care professionals, friends and family are encouraged to visit the center, as if it were the client’s home. However, all visitors are screen for the security and safety of clients and staff. Aspects of this revolutionary model
of care are being integrated into other Oklahoma Adult Day Care, Assisted Living and Nursing Centers.
At Patchwork ADC, we provide meals. Breakfast and or lunch and snacks, meeting one-third daily nutrition goals, and follow guidelines set by the American Dietic Association.
At Patchwork ADC we provide supervision. Supervision isn’t just knowing who’s there and who isn’t. Supervision is watching out for negative changes, that need addressing, and knowing our people’s schedules, and when to offer support and when to leave them alone. Extended supervision is helping members be safe in their homes. Some live with family or friends but some live alone, and they wonder, if I fell who would know, if I were sick, who would help. Extended supervision checks in on our people if they are late or don’t show up. Extended supervision is staff driving by on the weekends and holidays to make sure everyone is okay.
At Patchwork ADC we provide social services Social services are there to help members maximize their independence increase socialization. Social services assist with personal, family and adjustment problems. Social services help members meet their needs by keeping them up to date on available resource and helping them access those resources. Social services mean help with finding and getting all available benefits for which members are eligible.

For Those with Aortic Stenosis, TAVR May be the Answer Success for first TAVR patient at TMC Mary Gentry, 78, loves to be active and includes walking as part of her daily regimen. But when she started noticing shortness of breath, just from making her bed and walking to her mailbox, she called TexomaCare cardiologist Scott Turner, DO, FACC. Little did she know, she would become the first patient at Texoma Medical Center (TMC) to have a valve replacement, using TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement), a minimally invasive procedure. TAVR can be recommended for patients who need aortic valve repair but are not strong enough for traditional openheart surgery.
Minimally invasive TAVR During the procedure, the surgeon inserts the new valve about the size of a quarter within the damaged valve, using a catheter guided through the arteries. Once in place, the new valve is expanded and takes over the function of the damaged aortic valve, restoring blood flow. Patients often only require a two-day hospital stay. “Cardiac care is moving in this direction – doing bigger things less invasively, and with a quicker recovery,” says
Dr. Turner. “We’re excited to be able to offer this minimally invasive procedure to patients who meet the criteria for it. “Currently, we’re the only facility offering TAVR in the Texoma region. Many patients drive well over an hour to get here, because their families live here, and they have a good support network. Having family close by has also been proven to contribute to a better recovery.”
A noticeable difference Gentry says she noticed a big difference after the procedure. “I was no longer short of breath, tired or exhausted,” she says. “The doctors and nurses of this hospital took great care of me.” It didn’t take Gentry long to get back to her normal routines. She likes to cook, collect recipes, travel, and she walks at least a halfmile every day. “My daughter and I are putting a stationary bike together for me, so I can ride with her. I am so grateful to be active again, and want to thank TMC for everything they have done for me. I hope my success story can help someone else who has this condition!”
Aortic stenosis – symptoms and treatment Aortic stenosis is
commonly an age-related condition caused by the aortic valve showing wear and tear and narrowing from calcium buildup. The narrowing reduces blood flow through the heart, resulting in symptoms such as: • shortness of breath • lack of energy • fatigue • chest pain • fainting • heart murmur The traditional way of correcting this is by open-heart surgery, but it’s a much bigger risk for older patients and for patients with several complicated health issues. Now that TAVR is available at TMC, some patients have a new option. To learn more about the TAVR procedure, visit: texomamedicalcenter.net/tavr1 To make an appointment, contact Valve Coordinator Michaela Prater, RN at 903-4164233. With limited exceptions, physicians are not employees or agents of this hospital. Individual results may vary. There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if minimally invasive surgery is right for you.
