Angkor Wat Bike4Kids! Event 2013 Presented by NOCC

Welcome

W

elcome to the 8th Angkor Wat Bike4Kids! Notice our new name! Please understand that we organize this event for a very specific purpose: to protect and empower vulnerable children and young women in Cambodia. Your fundraising – especially the personal sponsorships you attract from friends and family – allows us to do this. As enjoyable as this event has proven to be over the past 7 years, we would not organize it without this very specific mission. Again this year -- and hopefully for many years to come -- we are privileged to partner with Terre Des Hommes - Netherlands (TdH NL), a global leader in the fight against human trafficking and child protection. This partnership, and your support, helps us better emphasize the CAUSE of the event, improving the lives of children all over Cambodia. As always, it is my great pleasure to welcome you (or welcome you back!) to this unique event, in one of the most spectacular places of the world. The bike event is a big adventure, but it is much more than that. It is first and foremost a vehicle for VFI and TdH NL to support vulnerable children in Cambodia. We ask each of you to help us bring in as much money as possible to support our great causes. This year net proceeds will again go towards supporting our local partners in Cambodia. For VFI, The Cambodian Center for the Protection of Children’s Rights (CCPCR), operating a safe house project for victims of sex trafficking and related abuse - and two projects from Il Nodo: one which is helping children living with parents in prisons throughout Cambodia, and another teaching disadvantaged youth craftsmanship skills. For TdH NL, The Cambodian Women’s Crisis Center, supporting female victims of violence – and Action Pour Les Enfants, helping stop street-based child exploitation and abuse, is a showcase of the excellent work that will be supported as a direct result of funds raised. Don’t forget – join us at both the pre-race dinner and the post-race brunch. Both are highly recommended! Our pre-event dinner will be held at Triangle Restaurant on Pub Street and our post-event brunch will be at the award-winning Nest Restaurant. We want to thank our generous sponsors for the 2013 event: National Postcode Lottery, DKSH, DHL, Oktad Communications, CSA, Sokha Hotel, Giant, Travel Loops, Flying Bikes, Monument Books, and Coca-Cola. On behalf of the VFI Team (Anna, Kar, Rod, Stacia, Thouni and so many volunteers) and our wonderful partner TdH NL, I look forward to seeing you at the event. Thank you in advance for helping raise money and awareness to improve the plight of children throughout Cambodia. Rick Reece Founder and Director Village Focus International Angkor Wat Bike4Kids! Welcome

Dear Bikers !

A

s the representative of Terre des Hommes Netherlands for the South Asia region I’m extremely delighted to partner with Village Focus International in this year’s Angkor Wat “Bike4Kids!” Race and the fight against exploitation of children in Cambodia. Thousands of children are being exploited and every day we witness grave violations of children’s rights. Children are being trafficked, are being prostituted or are being put to work against their will and we as Terre des Hommes Netherlands will do everything possible to rescue them and give them a new chance in a safe environment. Last year, Terre des Hommes Netherlands supported 12 project partners, implementing 19 projects in Cambodia. We provided legal assistance to 406 victims. We protected 2,272 children vulnerable to and victims of exploitation by enrolling them in school. In total, 16,068 children benefited from our programme and 100,000 people were reached through our community educations and campaign. The Angkor Wat “Bike4Kids” Race is not only FUN, but also a venue to raise awareness and fundraise for services that support victims of exploitation and I do hope that many more ‘bikers’ and others will join us in this cause! Thank you BIKERS for joining Terre des Hommes and Village Focus International in the ‘Bike4Kids! ” Your participation will help us to give exploited children in Cambodia a better life! Have a beautiful day and ‘happy biking’! With kind regards, Leny Kling Regional Representative Terre des Hommes Netherlands South-East Asia

Millions of children are exploited by way of child labour, child trafficking and child prostitution. The rights of these children are seriously violated. We want to end child exploitation. We stand up for these children because they too have the right to grow up in a safe, exploitation free environment. Terre des Hommes Netherlands works to create a world in which all children can have a humane existence and can grow up to be independent adults. Angkor Wat Bike4Kids! Event 2013 Presented by NOCC

OUr cause

OUr cause

Village Focus International and Terre des Hommes-Netherlands are pleased to introduce the four non-governmental organizations receiving the net proceeds of this year’s Angkor Wat Bike4Kids! Event. Our aim is always to identify partners with local knowledge, expertise and integrity to ensure that hard-earned funds are used in the most cost-effective and justified ways, and this year is no exception. These charitable partners work tirelessly in Cambodia to improve the lives of disadvantaged, abused, and vulnerable children and youth. Through their rescue and rehabilitation work, vocational training programs, and ongoing advocacy efforts, these organizations are making a real difference in the lives of local people. Thank you for helping them continue this great work!

girls into their families or communities.

The Anti-Trafficking Safehouse – a shelter run by the Cambodian Center for the Protection of Children’s Rights (CCPCR) CCPCR was the first anti-child-trafficking NGO established in Cambodia. The Phnom Penh Anti-Trafficking Safehouse, their longest-running shelter, is a haven for survivors of abuse, exploitation and trafficking. It houses 50 girls and young women rescued from traumatic situations, and provides rehabilitation + recovery through counselling, mentorship, therapy, and medical care, before reintegrating

20

Angkor Wat Bike4Kids! Event 2013 Presented by NOCC

With the proceeds from 2012, the Safehouse was able to fund its daily operations (including classes in English, computers, dance, yoga, hygiene, and life skills); construct a new playground and vegetable garden; paint the classrooms and library; install curtain rods and curtains; upgrade the computer lab; and take the children on a 3-day excursion to the beach. With the proceeds from 2013, the Safehouse aims to continue its funding of daily activities for 50 girls; purchase materials and resources to sustain an inhouse sewing business where students learn a vocational skill; provide community outreach services, trafficking awareness workshops, and livelihood training at a Community Learning Center for vulnerable families (preventing children from entering alternative care in the first place). Message from Executive Director: «The shelter is making incredible progress, thanks to this partnership and everyone connected with it. Thank you for making this happen!»

One Child’s Story: *Srey Mao was 13 when her stepfather started raping her. After falling pregnant, she was referred first to CWCC, then to CCPCR. Upon arrival she said that she felt like life wasn’t worth living. Yet after many months of rehabilitation at CCPCR, she went through a reconciliation process with her Father, returned to her community, and now runs her own sewing business! She says, “It’s amazing to me that life can brighten and shine like the sun!”

‘Bottega dell’Arte’ – a project of Il Nodo At the Bottega dell’Arte, disadvantaged Cambodian youth join a free, twoyear training program in artisanship and silversmith design in Phnom Penh. Students develop a mastery of silversmithing, and are taught principles of design and creativity, so they can craft beautiful, one-of-a-kind objects that they take pride in. They are also provided with a small business management course, and attend a one-month workshop with a visiting Italian artist every year, to work on their creativity and skills in a multicultural environment.

With the proceeds from 2013, the Bottega dell’Arte would like to provide training to additional youth; provide English lessons to students; expand the training to other crafts beyond silversmithing; and start a microcredit program to assist graduates in establishing their own businesses.

our cause

Introducing our cause partners!

Message from Country Director: «I, and Il Nodo staff, want to thank VFI for organizing this event, and thank all the participants in supporting our organization. We would not be able to make an impact and change lives without you.» One Child’s Story: Phanna, a graduate from Il Nodo’s silversmith school, had a tough childhood. His alcoholic father beat his mother and two sisters to death, forcing Phanna to flee to an orphanage. When he turned 18 with very few options, he was advised to enroll with Il Nodo. He immediately liked the workshops and took to the work with a passion. After two years of training, he is now a full time silversmith and makes a living to support his new family – he got married this year!

With the proceeds from 2012, the Bottega dell’Arte was able to fund 9 youth to attend the program, and provide them with a daily per diem and a nutritious lunch; and establish a small business employing previous graduates to produce items for an international market. OUr cause

In Cambodia, parents sentenced to jail may have no alternative but to take their children along with them to prison. This project supports these children, to ensure they live as close to a normal life as possible, and tries to find relatives’ families to take care of them. The project also supports pregnant women, ensuring they have access to pre- and post-natal services. With the proceeds from 2012, Il Nodo supported 128 children and their mothers, and 28 pregnant detainees; provided supplementary food, water and hygiene products; funded early childhood education training for playroom staff; negotiated access to women- and children-only toilets; and found alternative care arrangements outside prison walls for children over the age of 3. With the proceeds from 2013, Il Nodo will continue to meet daily needs of children and pregnant women in prisons; extend their partnership with the government to open a project in Phnom Penh’s women prison CC2; and hire a full-time social worker to assess prison conditions for children and arrange alternative care. One Child’s Story: Samnang was born in prison with a clubfoot; if left untreated, he would never have been able to walk properly. Il Nodo obtained his mother’s agreement and scheduled an operation, but when the day arrived, Samnang was no longer with his mother. His grandparents had taken him away, thinking his malformation would be good for begging. The child was finally located and the family convinced to allow the treatment. Samnang was operated on and went through two years of physiotherapy. Today his feet are perfect.

CWCC - Eliminate Violence Against Women & Children CWCC works to empower vulnerable women and girls through three strategic programs: prevention, protection and advocacy. With a need for service delivery to victims of violence against women, such as trafficking, sexual abuse (rape) and domestic violence, CWCC established three safe houses providing protection and legal assistance to girls and female victims of violence, and furthermore facilitate them to recover and reintegrate to the community. With the proceeds from 2012, CWCC provided a safe living place that with food, medical and psychological care, and skill training in sewing, cooking, souvenir class, and hairdressing and beauty salon. With the proceeds from 2013, CWCC will protect victims of trafficking, rape and domestic violence in the safe houses, and provide access to education, legal support, physical and social support to rebuild their lives.

Succeeding Through Education «We could not imagine we would have today. This is because of CWCC and its donors who provided us with an opportunity to return to school. Now we have graduated high school, and have entered a computer and English training program. At the end of our training, we will be given a job and can start earning a salary. We are eternally grateful to CWCC who encouraged and helped us prepare for this program and look towards a better future» Message from Executive Director: «Thanks to you, our dreams for next year can be achieved»

Action Pour Les Enfants Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE) is a nongovernmental organization dedicated to ending child sexual abuse and exploitation in Cambodia. APLE works to identify and rescue children in exploitative situations; rehabilitate and heal child survivors; investigate offenders and bring them to justice; and enhance awareness of child abuse and increase capacity to end it. APLE recognizes the importance of working collaboratively, and partners with various governmental agencies, NGOs, law enforcement, and the private sector to achieve their goals. With the proceeds from 2012, APLE was able to provide social support to 106 children and their families; make 38 arrests following investigations by APLE; convict 28 perpetrators of child sexual exploitation and abuse; and provide awareness to 4310 people.

With the proceeds from 2013, APLE hopes to provide social and legal support to 380 people; investigate 120 cases of exploitation; provide awareness to 900 communities; arrest 30 offenders ; and train 25 police officials and 45 NGO personnel.

Helping Children Living with Parents in Prison – a project of Il Nodo

One Child’s Story: *When Songly, a 15-year-old street beggar, was befriended by a foreigner who offered to pay for her school, she thought she was lucky. But one day he took her to his hotel room and started sexually assaulting her. Rescued by the police and then assisted by APLE, she was able to prosecute her offender, who was found guilty and is now serving a 15-year prison term. Message from Country Director: «APLE is very proud of the trust put in our organization by being chosen as beneficiaries» Cause Partners This year representatives of affiliate organisations and partners will be on-site to talk to you and answer any questions you may have about the projects proudly supported by our event – adding an extra-special dimension to proceedings! Give on Site We will have portable credit card authorisation equipment on-site at every leg of the event: our pre-event dinner, the race itself as well as our post-event brunch, so if you’re keen to add to the feel-good factor of festivities please keep this in mind! SIEM REAP

At VFI we have carefully selected a few of the city’s hidden delights that we recommend you take the time to explore to really experience traditional Cambodia.

Angkor Wat

Of course the biggest attraction in Siem Reap is the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat. The largest religious structure in the world, Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century as a temple and mausoleum for King Suryavarman II. The complex, while visible throughout the Angkor Wat Bike4Kids!, is worth a more in-depth visit to get up close and admire the sculpting and architecture of the Khmer empire. Of the temples, Angkor Wat, the Bayon, and Ta Prohm are the most popularly visited, but smaller structures such as Banteay Srei are equally beautiful and deserving of a visit. At least one day is recommended to explore the temples, and entrance passes are $20 for a one-day visit.

sIEM REAP

The Tonle Sap, Flooded Forest, and Floating Villages

The Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Its water levels rise and fall by 12 metres between dry season and wet season! Hence in dry season many parts of the lake look like a forest growing from a floodplain, while in the wet season, most of the trees are submerged and you can only see the top of a ‘forest’ above the waterline. Locals build their homes on stilts or bamboo rafts, so that they don’t become flooded when wet season arrives. These ‘floating villages’ are impressive homes to see regardless of the season. The closest floating village to Siem Reap is Chong Khneas, but just a bit further is Kampong Phlup, which is arguably the more authentic of the two. After Angkor Wat, the Tonle Sap is a must-do, as you will be hard-pressed to find a culture and livelihood like this elsewhere in the world.

Pub Street

Perhaps the most famous street in Siem Reap, Pub Street is known for cheap drinks and a party atmosphere. Strolling along Pub Street after the end of a tiring day sightseeing is sure to keep you entertained. **Please do not visit an orphanage while in Cambodia. While some organizations may allow you to visit a vocational training site with young adults, any orphanage that allows outsiders to enter its grounds and interact with children for a short-time can actually be detrimental to the child’s psychosocial development.

village focus

village focus VFI is an organization that fights for these people, and is built upon a dedicated, professional group of local leaders. The Bike4Kids! sheds light on the important work we do, and emphasizes the remarkable people we support.

In 2000, Village Focus International became the first and only international NGO started in Laos. Shortly thereafter - in 2003 - VFI opened its Cambodia program. Not long after, the Bike4Kids! was born. Our name was chosen with intent, to represent VFI’s commitment to local people: People who answer daily adversity with imagination and muscle; the women and children who survive trafficking; parents who are determined to send their children to school; local farmers fighting for their land rights; and individuals determination and courage.

34

Angkor Wat Bike4Kids! Event 2013 Presented by NOCC

‘Protect’, ‘Educate’, ‘Empower’ are three powerful words that define the mission of VFI. With a focus on anti-trafficking & child protection, village development (education & food security), and land & natural resource rights, VFI is committed to working with and serving the poorest, most vulnerable people of Laos and Cambodia.
