JULIET STEVENSON as winnie in

Main House

thursday 23 january – SATURDAY 22 February 2014

by Samuel Beckett Olivier award-winning stage and screen actress Juliet Stevenson (Truly Madly Deeply, Death and the Maiden) takes on one of the great roles in Samuel Beckett’s surreal masterpiece Happy Days, directed by Natalie Abrahami. Trapped in a scorched wasteland with her detached husband, Winnie keeps despair at bay with ritual, song and her trusty lipstick. But is our buoyant, hopeful heroine in denial of her ever-diminishing world? 50 years on this powerful tale of resilience – and of a woman’s ability to survive against overwhelming odds – still shocks and amazes. by Tennessee Williams “These are love-letters, yellowing with antiquity... poems a dead boy wrote. I hurt him the way that you would like to hurt me, but you can’t! I’m not young and vulnerable anymore.” Gillian Anderson stars as Blanche DuBois whose downward spiral collides with the visceral, animal Stanley, creating theatre’s most famous explosion of sexual tension. ‘The sexiest theatre in London.’ Time Out

It’s our audience that makes us ‘the sexiest theatre’ at least as much as our shows - the buzz in the bar, the action in the auditorium, the conversation on The Cut. As a Broadway producer wrote to me after A Season in the Congo: “I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed an audience so much – the most diverse and engaged and intelligent group I’ve ever seen in a theatre.” One of the reasons is the range of cheap tickets we offer. £10 tickets for every show - for everyone. Half our seats go for £20 or less. Big discounts for young people, schools, disabled and older people. We like to say that we’re ‘the home you never knew you had’. It doesn't cost much to find out if it's true. David Lan

Calling all superheroes Alongside all our Main House shows we offer local state schools: 5% of our tickets for free free in-school workshops with the show’s assistant director free on-stage workshops with the assistant director and Young Vic production staff resource packs to give an insight into the show’s rehearsal process and themes Also, twice a year, we run our free Schools Theatre Festivals, one uniquely for pupils with special educational needs. These offer young people the opportunity to make theatre at the Young Vic. ‘I think I’ve learnt a lot. One thing is to get something right you need to be committed and encouraged to achieve. I think this is one of my greatest achievements’. – Student, Schools Theatre Festival ‘The Young Vic opens up new experiences to our young people; supporting their academic development and inspiring them to be the next generation of theatre goers – this work is so important.’ – Teacher, Forest Hill School

Will you help us to keep offering these fantastic opportunities to young people? You could provide: £5 for rehearsal scripts for young people, £10 to fund a school ticket, £50 to fund a vital prop for their performance, or £100 to fund a week’s rehearsals with a professional director for a school.

Help us keep up this exciting work by donating any amount at youngvic.org/support-us.

The Cut is one of London’s most popular theatre bars and restaurants. Our food and drink specials evolve with the season at the Young Vic. Playful dishes take their cues from current and forthcoming shows, reflecting geographical and ethnic themes.
