About Operation HOPE Operation HOPE is a national self-help, education and economic empowerment organization, backed by more than 250 private sector banks, insurance companies, credit unions and financial service companies with more than $6 trillion in assets between them. HOPE is considered to be one of the pre-eminent empowerment leaders in urban, inner city and under-served communities nationwide, bringing together public and private partnerships for innovative solutions for wealth building and poverty eradication. Operation HOPE was founded in 1992, following the civil unrest in Los Angeles, as a way of providing an alternative solution to building wealth and creating stakeholders in under served, inner city communities. At the core of HOPE’s mission to eradicate poverty and empower the wealth-less is a movement to establish “silver rights” or the right to financial literacy, access to capital, and equality of opportunity for the under served. This new movement is focused on freeing and enriching people’s spirit, as much as it is about growing net worth and advancing economic standing.
MISSION To expand economic opportunity in under served communities through economic education and empowerment. Operation HOPE improves the economic quality of life for individuals, families and communities through programs that create stakeholders: converting check cashing customers into banking customers, renters into homeowners, small business dreamers into small business small business owners, and minimum wage workers into living wage workers.
VISION To eradicate poverty as we know it, in our lifetime through the Silver Rights Movement.
VALUES • Create stakeholders • Empower through Education and Access • Solve social problems through bridge-building • Facilitate change through advocacy • Strive for excellence • Spread Dignity • Premium quality service for under served communities/residents/ consumers/customers

December 2001
Operation HOPE launched HOPE Coalition America in response to the devastating effects the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 had on our nation’s economy. HOPE Coalition America is a partnership of senior executives and professionals from the banking and financial services, insurance, legal and other industries as well as higher education, social services and community development providers, that provide free financial counseling and casework assistance to workers and small businesses affected by national tragedies and disasters.
Operation HOPE Programs
BANKING ON OUR FUTURE
The mission of the Banking on Our Future (BOOF) program is to execute a nationwide delivery system for financial literacy education for youth ages 9-18 at no cost to school districts, with a focus on urban, underserved communities. The program consists of four modules: I. Basics of Banking, II. Checking & Savings Accounts, III. The Power of Credit, IV. Basic Investments. Modules are taught by volunteer HOPE Corps members who are trained to break down their knowledge of banking and credit into terms that youth can understand and utilize immediately. In addition to financial education, the students are left with a message of empowerment, a message of responsibility, and most important, a message of HOPE.
HOPE CENTERS
The Operation HOPE Center is a working “one stop” model location for empowerment. The centers provide personalized service and focused attention for the purpose of creating community stakeholders. By converting renters into home owners and dreamers into viable business owners, increasing net worth, and improving the economic quality of life for individuals and families in emerging markets, HOPE works towards its overall mission of eradicating poverty. The Operation HOPE Center is able to accomplish these objectives by providing innovative empowerment services that consist of adult financial literacy workshops, money management, budgeting and credit counseling, mortgage and business lending counseling, investment and retirement planning, home buyer down payment assistance matching grants, small business technical assistance and post funding counseling. Operation HOPE has 8 HOPE Center locations with several throughout Los Angeles, Oakland CA and Washington D.C. with a virtual HOPE Center in Poway California. In early 2007, Operation HOPE will open an additional HOPE Center in Harlem, New York.
HOPE COALITION AMERICA
HOPE Coalition America was founded after September 11th to respond to individuals suffering from the financial aftermath of a disaster. The most effective way to recover is pre-disaster Emergency Financial Literacy and Preparation. After a disaster, financial issues affect more people than personal injury or direct property damage. HOPE Coalition America serves as a resource network of companies, including banking, financial services, and insurance as well as government, social service and emergency relief organizations that mobilize to respond to disasters. Operation HOPE’s largest response efforts to a nationally declared disaster involves its recent response to the Gulf Coast Hurricanes. In response to this disaster, and in close coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Operation HOPE and HOPE Coalition America has activated Project Restore HOPE - Hurricane Katrina. This organizational structure utilizes a trained network of HOPE Corps volunteers to provide financial information, guidance and other services by phone and in Disaster Recovery Centers operated by FEMA to those who are directly affected by this devastating storm.
HOPE CORPS
The mission of HOPE Corps is to enable any individual that has a passion for the promotion of financial self-sufficiency, self-empowerment and HOPE to become a HERO. HOPE Corps volunteers provide financial literacy to youth through the Banking on Our Future program; guidance and assistance and financial counseling to disaster victims through HOPE Coalition America and provide economic education in the areas of credit, investments and home ownership at HOPE Centers.
