Why You Should Scoop Picking up after your pet is never a pleasant task. Dog poop is unsightly and if not disposed of properly you run the risk of stepping in it at the park or in your own yard. Besides the fact that dog poop is unsightly, there appears to be a lot of recent research that suggest that pet waste is a major contributor to water pollution. According to the 2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey done by the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association (APPMA) there are a total of 46.3 million homes in America that own dogs and there is a total of 78.2 million dogs. Those numbers add up to a lot of kibble. That wouldn't matter if all dog owners also owned a pooper-scooper or hired a service to do the work for them. But several studies have found that roughly 40% of Americans don't pick up their dogs' feces We all know that dog poo is just plain gross. However, scientists are studying pet waste in order to find out more about environmental issues and pathogens. Recently, scientists developed lab techniques to determine the origin of fecal bacteria and how it contaminates water. One of the new lab techniques is a variant of DNA sequencing. Scientists can actually identify many of the actual antibiotic resistance microbes. Pet waste may also impact the recreational enjoyment of our lakes and streams. Managing dog waste properly is something that we can all do to make a difference in the quality of our watersheds. What we do today will impact the quality and improvement for the future. The nitrogen and phosphorus contained in dog waste can degrade water quality, as the waste decays the process of breaking down the organic matter in the waste uses up dissolved oxygen and releases ammonia into the water. Low oxygen levels, increased ammonia and warm summer water temperatures can kill fish and plants while increasing the growth of algae. Storm runoff in the Atlanta metropolitan area
receives NO treatment. Pet waste is not fertilizer for your lawn and certainly not for your vegetables. Pet waste cannot be safely composted in a backyard compost pile either as smaller, single family piles do not generate enough heat to kill pathogens. Flies and other pest insects increase when dog waste is not removed and disposed of properly, becoming a nuisance and adding another way for disease to be transmitted. There are actions pet owners can take to help keep our water clean and our families healthy: Pick up pet waste from your yard. It is NOT a fertilizer. Carry disposable bags while walking your dog to pick up and dispose of waste properly. If you dispose of pet waste in the trash, wrap it carefully to avoid spillage during collection. Flush your pet’s waste down the toilet, so it can be treated at a sewage treatment plant. Communities are encouraged to provide pet waste disposal bags at local parks, along trails, and in public places where people frequently walk their dogs. The problem of dog waste disposal is a real one; our health and water quality are negatively impacted by the pollutant when it is not removed. Improper dog waste management is something that can be easily corrected by simply picking up after your dog when he goes. If the idea of picking up dog poop grosses you out then hire a poop scooping service. Waste left to decay in the yard will become a problem. Picking up your yard on a regular basis minimizes your family’s, especially your children’s, exposure to diseases and parasites found in dog feces.

Street Paws Year Founded: Dec 2012 but began operations in 2013 Mission Statement: Any animal we come across who finds themselves without a home will not go hungry or unloved. When funds and space allow, Street Paws will take the homeless animal under our wing, notify the proper authorities, network them and try to find them a new home. We will care for and provide comfort and aid to homeless pets in a variety of ways. If the animal is tame, we will network to find a home for them. If the animal is feral, we will feed and care for the animal in their own environment. Every action will be taken to provide the animal(s) with a proper diet and bedding. Spaying and neutering these ferals is of great importance to us. We will do what we can to ensure the feral population will be kept to a minimum. We also seek to educate pet owners about the importance of spaying and neutering, annual vaccinations and the importance of a true commitment to their pet as a family member to help ensure their pet does not become another homeless statistic as well. www.streetpaws.org

Pets are so much more than our trusty companions. They are members of the family for whom we’d do anything, right? From buying the best pet food and toys to scheduling routine wellness and vaccination appointments, pet parents do all they can to ensure their furry friends’ health and happiness. However, pet emergencies are often unforeseen events that are stressful and emotional for the pet and the pet parent. Because of this, we want to emphasize the importance of creating a plan of action in the event of a pet emergency. As animal lovers, all of us here at Woodland Animal Hospital don’t want there to be any question about what to do if or when a pet emergency happens on your watch. When Do Pets Require Emergency Care? Pet emergencies tend to happen when you least expect them, so it’s wise to expect the unexpected and have a plan in place just in case you ever find your pet in a critical situation. There are numerous causes of pet emergencies, but two of the most common stem from trauma caused by blunt force or car accident and poisoning from toxin ingestion. Other times to seek emergency care include times when your pet shows signs of choking, allergic reaction or heatstroke. What Are the Signs of an Emergency? Unfortunately, pets cannot come outright and tell us when something’s wrong, so it’s important for us to know what to look for. If your pet shows the following signs, be sure to seek emergency care as soon as possible: •Struggling to catch breath •Rapid or labored breathing •Bleeding from anywhere •Choking, non-stop gagging or coughing •.Major behavioral change (e.g., uncharacteristically aggressive) •Unconsciousness

Homemade Peanut Butter & Bacon Dog Treats Because your pup deserves some home baked goodies too!
Yield: depends on the size of your cookie cutter Prep time: 10 Minutes Total time: 45 Minutes, plus cooking Ingredients: · 1 cup (255g) natural creamy peanut butter ·
3/4 cup (180ml) nonfat milk
· 1 large egg (or 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce) ·
2 cups (244g) whole wheat flour*
·
1 Tablespoon baking powder
·
1/3 cup (30g) oats (either whole-rolled or quick oats are fine)
·
2-3 strips bacon, chopped
Directions: Preheat oven to 325F degrees. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside. In a large bowl, gently mix the peanut butter, milk, and egg together with a large spoon or spatula. Switch to a whisk to make sure no lumps remain. Add the flour and baking powder. You may need to turn the dough out onto the counter and use your hands to work in the flour. Mix in the oats and chopped bacon. The dough is extremely thick and heavy. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into 1/4” thickness. Cut into shapes using cookie cutters or a knife. Arrange on the baking sheets. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until very lightly browned on the bottom. Remove from the oven, and flip the treats to bake the other side for 10-12 more minutes. Allow to cool completely before serving to your pup. Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Treats freeze well, up to 2 months. Additional Notes: *Unbleached all-purpose flour is safe for dogs, but whole wheat was more highly recommended by our vet because of its added health benefits. Again, please consult with your vet about any allergies your dog may have. ‑ 23 ‑
Service Dog Etiquette by: Corey Fox Owner of Guardian of the Night K9 Service Dog director for Warriors 4 Heroes (501 c 3) Service dogs are becoming more common to come across in your daily life. Service dogs are trained to aid in many different forms of disabilities. Some of the disabilities they are trained to aid in are, but not limited to is blindness, hearing disabilities, mobility issues, diabetes, seizures, autism and PTSD. There is no one set breed or size requirement for a service dog. Each dog is tested individually for the job that it will be trained to do. For example you wouldn’t pick a small dog to aid in mobility but it could work as a medical alert or hearing dog. Size is not the only factor in picking a service dog many things go in to testing and picking just the right dog for the job.
Service dogs are classified as medical equipment because they aid a person with a disability to have a better quality of life. They are NOT considered pets. That does not mean that these animals aren’t loved or allowed to play. It is quit the opposite these animals are highly valued and love by their handler and handler’s family. They are also
‑ 24 ‑
given down time and allowed to relax and be a dog, but every task they perform for their handler is a game to them and they are rewarded for it. Hundreds of hours goes in to training a service dog to aid in the handler’s disability.
Service Dog Etiquette The most often asked question is, So why are all service dogs marked with “Do Not Pet” signs? Service dogs are patched with do not pet and handlers ask you not to pet the service dog because when you pet them it takes them away from focusing on their job. These dogs have been through extensive training to be in crowded environments and continue to ignore others and focus on their handler. By you petting them it breaks that training and rewards them for breaking focus. So as tempting as it is to want to pet the very pretty well behaved dog in the checkout line next to you, please refrain. Service dogs are allowed to accompany their handlers anywhere the public population is allowed to go. There are only two areas that a service dog cannot go a sterile environment (anywhere street clothes are not allowed i.e. Operating room, burn center etc.) and a commercial kitchen (anywhere food is being prepared for the public) As tempting as it is to point out the service dog , make kissy noises or ask questions about the service dog the best thing you can do for the team is to ignore the service dog. Speak to the handler and never the dog if you do happen to have a question. Handlers at times feel they are the invisible part of the leash as the dog begins to attract so much attention.

Why Goats are Good for Our School
By: Hannah Smith of them all by ourself Goats are a wonderful now, we even wear our thing at our school. farming boots to do it. They may look weird or So far we have learned do strange things we are how to walk a goat, how not use to but students they have babies, how to get a chance to learn milk a goat, how to feed a a lot about animals by goat, how to brush a goat having these goats. You and now we are watching know we learn love the babies grow up. If from goats? By caring you really think about it for them and learning having a goat really hands about them and we also on learning, hands on love learn to love. By love and hands on farming. I mean we learn how to form relationships See so all schools need a goat. with animals, you know they need us? By learning to take care of them we learn how to take care of other things like pets, plants and ourself. Also they can be our friends too! On a bad day or sad day a goat is a great thing to hug on. Did you know goats help us save money? You know Mr. Larry does have to pay to get his grass mowed he has our goats to do that. Also the students in Upper Elementary feed the goats our left over food. This helps cut down on trash cost and helps put nutrients back into the soil naturally. You know people pay big bucks forgoat poop? It is a great thing to make soil fertile and we get it for free! Another thing our goats help us do is learn about farming from Mr. Larry. We watch him take care of them and we learn about how to too! Our class is allowed to take care
