e have completed our first year of publishing Pet Pages Atlanta. It has been exciting and rewarding to develop our Pet Community with the North Metro edition. The overwhelming response we received from Cobb and Cherokee pet owners has resulted in their very own Northwest Metro edition. On our first Cobb & Cherokee cover, we introduce Ruby. You will find her ‘cover girl’ story on page A8. We met Ruby via Susan VanHemert. We are truly blessed to have Susan on our team working tirelessly for our vision and dreams. If you like our little book, please let us know by visiting our website, sending an email, Facebook ‘Like’, or become a Twitter follower. To keep us going, you need to let the wonderful businesses who placed ads with us know you saw them in Pet Pages. If you know a business that should be included here, please let them know about us. Our publication is FREE so take two: One for you and one for a friend. Help us spread the word about our “Amazing Little Book” and join our Pet Community. Publisher Mary G. To Day Care or Not To Day Care? That Is the Question!!!

Everyone has heard about the popularity of dog day care. For many of us, they have become a way of life, even a necessity. We leave our homes early in the morning and our pets wait anxiously at home for our return. Our animals should not be left alone for 10 or 12 hours a day, sometimes confined to a crate, and we wonder, why they are over active, destructive, needy or just miserable. Today’s pet owner knows that this is no way to raise a well- balanced happy dog. Some pet lovers even resolve NOT to have a pet under these circumstances. Hence the birth of dog day care! Now there’s a lot to consider when opting to put your precious pet in dog day care. Is it affordable, is it safe, is it convenient, is it clean, will it be fun for my pet and good for their overall well-being? Needless to say if you love your dog (and who doesn’t) these are just a few of the basic things you’ll want to consider. We suggest you visit several dog care centers and ask these questions… “Am I allowed to see the kennel area” (if so, give it the sniff test. If not DON’T go)? What time do they open and close? Are they flexible if I am running a little late? How long do the dogs actually run and play each day? How much room is there for play? If my dog cannot play all day (due to age or

health reasons) is there a quiet comfortable place for them to rest? Are they on webcam so that I can see my pet play? Does this facility offer discounts for multiple dogs and multiple days of day care or boarding? What kind of activities are there during the day for my pet? What do they do in case of an emergency? My dogs are my children and I opened Dogma Dog Care in honor of them and all of my pet loving friends who wanted the best of the best for their dog, cat or bird. So please put us on your list when you’re looking for a dog day care and see the Dogma difference! Robin Crawford, Dogma Dog Care 770.436.4346

Rescued and Loving Life Meet Ruby. Now six years old, Ruby was found abandoned on a vacant property in Georgia. Discarded by an irresponsible, back-yard-breeder, Ruby was left to fend for herself. A thoughtful woman had spotted Ruby and had been gingerly feeding her through the fence for several days. It was obvious that Ruby had been used to produce puppies, although no puppies were found on that day in April 2010. Her condition was dismal, but her spirit was so bright. After a good cleaning up and a bath, Ruby was on her way to a better place physically and emotionally. Heartworm positive, full of parasites, covered in ticks and fleas, and weighing only 50 pounds, Ruby was rescued with a strong will to live and to be loved. Her name, Ruby, was chosen on the car ride back to northwest Atlanta. Named after the precious stone, Ruby means “deserved to be loved.” It is also is known as the gemstone of courage. And Ruby was very courageous that day to trust the strangers who only wanted to help her after other humans had left her to die. Wow! Things are a little different in the big city! Ruby arrived at her new home to meet her new pack mates. A safe, warm bed and good food, and endless hugs – Ruby was home. Ruby’s recovery began with immediate professional veterinary care. Testing revealed she was HW+ and her immune system was very weak. Not to worry! Ruby did not know it, but she’d landed in the care of two

people who will do cartwheels to make things better! Ruby was put on a nutritious raw food diet paired with a precise, customized regime of holistic supplementation to get rid of those parasites, and eradicate

the heartworm. There are multiple treatments available for heartworm. Ruby’s peopleparents opted for a slow-kill holistic treatment path, given that she was very underweight, malnourished, and presented a compromised immune system. Under the care and supervision of a licensed DVM holistic vet, Ruby followed a daily regime of gentle but effective supplementation. It took 14 months of continuous, diligent delivery of professional and home care, with tons of love to achieve such a milestone. Ruby has been heartworm free ever since. She’s loving life! Today, Ruby is 75 pounds of pure joy and happiness. Loved and lovable, she leads a very good life with her family of two and four legged companions. Susan VanHemert

For many pet parents, losing a pet is like losing a best friend, a family member, and a trusted companion all at once. When that loss occurs, many are left with grief and other emotions that can be overwhelming, not knowing what to do or say to move forward, or even what to say to others in a similar predicament. Deceased Pet Care in Atlanta, offers a free monthly Pet Loss Support Group to help those through these emotions and the grieving process. Those of us who love our pets realize our pet is not “just a dog” or “just a cat”, but a beloved member of the family. When they come to the end of life, you feel a significant, even traumatic loss. The level of grief depends on factors such as your age and personality, the age of your pet, and the circumstances of their death. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief you’ll feel. If, for example, you lived alone and the pet was your only companion, coming to terms with his loss can be even harder. Or, if you were unable to afford veterinary treatment to prolong the life of your pet, you may even feel a profound sense of guilt. One aspect that can make grieving for the loss of a pet so difficult is that pet loss is not appreciated by everyone. Friends and family may ask “What’s the big deal? It’s just a pet!” Some people assume that pet loss shouldn’t hurt as much as human loss, or that it is somehow inappropriate to grieve for a pet. They may not understand because they don’t have a pet of their own, or

because they are unable to appreciate the companionship and love that a pet can provide. Pet Loss Support Groups decrease that sense of isolation and aloneness in addition to providing validation and support for one’s feelings. Seeking out others who have lost pets and can appreciate the magnitude of your loss, as well as learning ways of getting through the grieving process can help greatly.

Pet Loss Support Group

Deceased Pet Care’s Pet Loss Support Group is held on the first Tuesday of each month from 7:30 pm — 8:30 pm at its Chamblee Funeral Home located at 4991 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, Georgia, 30341. Come and share your story, or just listen and receive support from others who understand what it means to lose a pet. We will explore the grief process and learn ways to let go and move forward in a meaningful way that pays tribute to your beloved pet. Together we can get through the grieving process and start the recovery process.

Questions regarding the Pet Loss Support Group may be directed to Deceased Pet Care Funeral Homes at 770-457-7659, or visit our website at www.deceasedpetcare.com .

eorgia Animal Project’s mis- clinic staff, and volunteers dedicated to sion is to reduce animal suffering providing high quality low-cost spay and

and confront companion-animal overpopulation through effective education programs and by offering high quality, low-cost spay and neuter directly to the public at our cost or below.

We target the root cause of animal overpopulation with a sound solution high quality, low-cost spay and neuter. We sponsor multiple clinics each week at our location in historic Ball Ground, Georgia. The prices associated with our clinics are significantly reduced from what a veterinarian typically charges because we ask only that you pay what it actually costs us to perform the spay or neuter. Georgia Animal Project can do this because we are a 501c3 non-profit organization and we receive grants and donations to help us achieve our goals. We are a group of highly skilled veterinarians, vet techs,

neuter services in order to eliminate the need for euthanasia in shelters and rescues throughout North Georgia.

What we do is not always glamorous, and we do not always have those fuzzy stories that pull at your heart strings, but we do the hard work that helps everyone helping and caring for animals. Please support what we do with your donation. “The adoption of homeless companion animals, though it remains the only ethical way to add a dog or cat to your family, is just a temporary solution. Reducing the need to place these animals should be the goal of every community.” Please support our work at www.theanimalproject.org/Support.html GAP, PO Box 689 Holly Springs, GA 30142. Adopt a Pet and Live Longer !

Take a Bunny 101 Class Georgia House Rabbit Society 2280 Shallowford Rd Marietta 678-653-7175

Rabbits Are for Life Not Just for Easter When spring approaches, we think of flowers blooming, warm sunny days, a favorite season for all - unless you’re a rabbit. At this time of year people are drawn into impulse purchases of darling baby bunnies. Unfortunately, baby rabbits are purchased by people with no preparations made for their long term well being. Since rabbits have a 10-12 year life expectancy, this should be a long term commitment. Many of them end up sad and lonely, in tiny cages with little or no attention, the wrong food, no toys or exercise, and living outside. Some die from lack of proper care, many are surrendered to county shelters within a few months, and many are abandoned outside because people no longer want them when the novelty has worn off, and think they are setting the rabbit “free”. A domestic rabbit has little or no chance of surviving on their own outside. They lack the survival instincts of a wild rabbit. They suffer from starvation,

dehydration, parasite wounds and infection, and many are killed by cars, dogs, hawks, and wild predators. Even those fortunate enough to be caught can be so injured and sick that they don’t survive. If you have an interest in adopting a rabbit as a family pet, or if you already have a rabbit and want to learn more about house rabbits as pets, please come visit the GA HRS Rabbit Center and sign up for one of our Bunny 101 classes. We promise you will learn things that will benefit you and your rabbit. With any pet, spay and neuter is a must! All GA HRS rabbits are spayed and neutered and checked by a vet before being available for adoption.

For years we have been told “don’t feed your dog table scraps”, leaving us to feel guilty, conflicted and maybe even questioning the logic behind a processed, unnatural and unvaried diet. Saving Toto Throughout The Wizard of Oz, we are reminded of Dorothy’s bond to Toto and her refusal to leave him behind. The Wizard of Oz recently celebrated its 75 th Anniversary and it’s no wonder why this movie continues to connect with people. The story is full of so many memorable lines and iconic images, and, of course, an unforgettable dog named Toto. Toto was played by “Terry,” a Cairn Terrier. Terry’s life began a long way from the Yellow Brick Road. Her original owners abandoned her, but in a twist of fate, she was left at a kennel owned by a professional dog trainer. Before long, Terry was working in film, starring with Shirley Temple in a movie called “Bright Eyes” before landing the role in The Wizard of Oz. The movie’s theme, “There’s No Place Like Home” has resonated with

generations of viewers, and for Col. Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue (CPCRN), it’s the heart of their mission. As the largest national organization currently rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing Cairn Terriers and Cairn Terrier mixes, saving dogs like Toto is a big job. With close to 800 members all over the US and Canada, the Col. Potter team always works hard to make it happen. Since its inception in 2001, CPCRN has rescued 3,674 dogs in need. CPCRN’s primary goal is to match Cairns to loving families and lifelong homes, so that these Totos finally get to see what it really means to be “home. “ Stacey L. Vendetti

Essential Oils and Our Pets

W

e love our pets and want the best for them. As essential oils can help us humans, we find they are becoming popular in the pet community. Just like humans, animals become ill and suffer from numerous physical ailments. Some of these are genetic, but others are simply the result of day-to-day living and can be improved through diet and other natural solutions. One such solution is the use of essential oils. Humans have used essential oils throughout history for various health applications. However, with the advent of modern medicine, essential oils fell out of favor. Recently, the use of oils for improving our health and wellness has exploded, with our pet also enjoying this resurgence. Animals often eat plants because they feel the instinct to do so. Often a dog or cat will ingest plants in order to settle a stomach, promote vomiting, or just because they need the greens. Animals enjoy plants. Fresh plants have all the nutrients of essential oils but in very small quantities. It stands to reason that our pets would benefit from essential oil use as we do.

Bonding With Our Pets, how to develop the relationship that you want. Consider what happens if you are fearful, frustrated, or irritated when you engage with your pets. How do they respond? Are these the results you want and if so, how sustainable do you think these results will be? Now, reconsider. How different do you believe the outcome of that interaction will be if you were engaging them with forgiveness, compassion and acceptance? How would that feel? How differently would they feel about wanting to engage with you, to be with you, to please you?

Georgia Law Enforcement K-9 Fundraiser We are conducting a statewide fundraiser to provide Georgia Law Enforcement K9s with vital protective equipment. Our goal is to raise $25,000. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation.

Protecting Those Who Protect Us Providing bullet & stab-protective vests, first aid kits, and essential equipment to Law Enforcement K9s

These K9s put their lives on the line every day to protect our families and communities, yet the majority of these agencies can not afford this vital equipment.

Fundraising for Georgia Law Enforcement and First Responder K9s Our non-profit’s quest is to raise $25,000 to provide vital protective equipment to Georgia K9 Units. Most first responder K9 Units (police, sheriff, fire, and rescue) do not have the funds to purchase protective K9 equipment. Due to budget cuts and other economic issues 92% of all K9 units are run solely on donations. In almost all cases, the handlers must personally pay for their K9 partner’s needs which include medical, food, grooming, training, certifications, and safety equipment such as K9 bullet & stab-protective vests, K9 First Aid kits, K9 cooling vests, K9 heat alarms, etc. Most people assume that because the K9 is an officer of the agency then the K9 must therefore get all the equipment it needs to be protected and that the agency pays for all its expenses. This assumption is entirely false. These highly trained K9s dutifully protect and serve us every day and we believe they should be protected in return. Our purpose is to raise funds to provide the equipment they need. Because these items are highly specialized, and state-of-the-art professional equipment, these items are quite costly. Many of them are “Military Grade” to ensure the best possible quality and are proven to last for years. All K9 equipment provided by Project Paws Alive is professionally made by licensed companies that meet all

state and federal regulations. Project Paws Alive only donates professional grade equipment certified by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the National Institute for Public Safety (NIPS). Each protective bullet & stab-proof vest costs on average $1400 depending on the size of the K9 and any required agency equipment requirements, K9 field trauma kits are $350, K9 cooling vests are $200, and K9 vehicle heat alarms with full options and the “No K9 Left Behind” technology costs between $2,000- $2,500 depending on the make and model of the vehicle. These costs are not achievable by the limited budgets of many agencies or those run on donations. This is why we need YOUR support to help provide this vital equipment. There are over 62 agencies in Georgia alone that are currently requesting this type of equipment and the wait list grows every day. Please consider making a tax-deductibe donation today. Your donation is an investment in your community.

About: Project Paws Alive, Inc. is a Georgia 501c3 non-profit charity that is 100% volunteer run. Project Paws Alive’s mission is to provide vital K9 equipment to law enforcement, fire, rescue and military K9s throughout the United States. Project Paws Alive relies solely on donations to provide the lifesaving equipment that agencies cannot afford. We maintain a nationwide waitlist for this equipment. To donate, volunteer, or obtain more information about Project Paws Please consider making a tax-deductibe donation today. Your donation is an investment in your community. You may make a donation directly on our website at: projectpawsalive.org/donate.

What is Heartworm disease?

eartworm is a disease that can affect H dogs, cats and even humans. It is caused when an infected mosquito bites the pet and injects larvae into the body. The larvae grow inside the body, traveling into the heart, liver, lungs and blood vessels. They eventually develop into adults and the females produce babies, called microfilariae. Both the adults and babies can be detected on blood tests.

If your pet becomes infected with heartworms, it can have symptoms such as coughing, lethargy and exercise intolerance. More serious symptoms include breathing difficulties, an enlarged liver, fainting and sudden death. There is treatment available for your pet. It involves a series of injections and is a very serious (and usually costly) treatment. Your family veterinarian can explain the protocol and its possible side effects if this should happen.

The good news is that heartworm disease is preventable. There are a variety of oral and topical preventatives available through your family veterinarian. These medications are all researched and proven effective in the prevention of heartworms. It's best to talk with your veterinarian about which is best for you and your pet. A yearly blood test is generally required to fill this prescription medication. However, if given properly, it’s highly unlikely that your pet will develop heartworms. Heartworm carrying mosquitoes are found in most states, but are very prevalent here in the south. That is why it is so important for your pet to be on prevention all year round.

he Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing.
They each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent
his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted,
and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion,
never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face,
your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

TOP REASONS TO USE 10 A MOBILE VET

n today’s hectic environment juggling children, pets, and time seem like a never ending project. Utilizing the services of a mobile veterinarian may be a Igreat decision. Your appointment is scheduled around your needs. If you have multiple pets or children, and don’t wish to load them all into a car for a trip to the clinic. 3 Your dogs happen to be WAY TOO BIG for a peaceful and comfortable car ride. 4 Your family pet tends to be terrified by a visit to the veterinarian, and would benefit from a visit in the peaceful comfort of their own home. 5 You are providing hospice care for your aging pet and are very worried about the disruption of having to take your beloved friend into a clinic. 6 Health care that is tailored to your pet’s needs and their environment. 7 There is less exposure to communicable diseases for your pet. 8 No more vomit, stool, drool, or hair all over your car. 9 Your pet will be less stressed with an at home visit from the veterinarian. 10 If your pet is less stressed by the visit to the mobile vet, then you will be too! 1 2

Regardless of the reason, House Call Veterinarians may be a valuable tool to calm your hectic life. Pricing is comparable to most local clinic and essentially all services can be provided. Matthew Miller, D.V.M. Miller Mobile Veterinary Services 404-538-5448

ets America

The story of 8 million dogs & cats discarded by their owners each year, with only 4 million adopted, and the remaining 4 million euthanized must be told.

The mission of Green Pets America is twofold: Rescue & Education. Everyone in animal rescue agrees that we will not change our failed animal policy in America, bringing an end to our homeless animal crisis through rescue alone. Education is needed as well. We have therefore created an additional arm to Green Pets America. The one arm

• • •

that you are aware of is Rescue. This new additional arm is Arts & Education. It is our belief that educating the public & particularly our children about the love animals have for mankind, and the mutual bond we have with one another is needed. To change the future we must reach the minds and hearts of our future animal owners…our children.

We have three primary community projects scheduled for 2014. The GPA A&E League is creating and donating a beautiful Law Enforcement K 9 Memorial. We are creating and donating three larger than life animal art sculptures to the Cherokee Animal Shelter for their shelter update. We are developing a school curriculum for elementary, middle & high school kids that teaches the bond of animals alongside man through the history of the world. Green Pets America is a Partner in Education with the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, supporting our great Cherokee County Schools. Steve Monahan www.GreenPetsAmericaCommunities.org

e pet owners know that our furry friends can someW times cost us more than we expect. Be it a late night emergency vet visit or a new pair of shoes being mistaken

for a tasty treat, financial surprises are imminent. Sometimes these unexpected costs can come about when our pets are trying to protect us or protect “their turf.” Dog bites are typically covered by most insurance policies, but the insurance industry as a whole has become more sensitive to certain breeds and their supposed likelihood of attack. Many prominent insurance companies in our area have in fact banned certain breeds from being covered and some are even refusing coverage to homeowners with these certain breeds. The impact of this to the average homeowner is that you need to be fully aware of your insurance company’s stance on dogs and the particular breeds that may not be covered should there be an instance of a dog bite. Your homeowner’s insurance

is designed to protect you from liability arising from your animal causing bodily injury or harm to another person, on your own property or otherwise. I have personally seen where a small dog bite can bring a personal injury suit exceeding $250,000. This is not the sort of unexpected surprise you would want to be liable for and then find out from your insurance company that his / her breed is excluded from coverage within your policy. Speak with your agent and make sure your beloved four legged friend is not on their “naughty list”! Ryan Young, Agent -State Farm Insurance www.TalkToRyan.com

SchooL is CooL

W

e all try to protect our dogs from frightening and negative situations, but realistically there are just too many things that can suddenly turn your sweet lovable pet into a stressed, fearful, even aggressive canine. Stressful situations have the potential to be totally misunderstood by your pet and can lead to drastic results or even cause you to think about giving up your beloved pet. The importance of exposing your dog to new people, every day noises, and kids, leads to dogs that tend to be friendlier and less fearful. By regularly exposing our dogs to different kinds of people, animals and environments, we can help them gain confidence and ease. Not only young puppies, but all dogs can interact and thrive with new challenges, experiences, and daily routines. A visit to a dog park has the risk of provoking serious aggression if the chemistry just isn't right between strange dogs and owners with vastly different personalities and temperaments. Going on a normal walk in your neighborhood? You may encounter an offleash dog that will head snarling straight for you and your best friend, or the new dog owner trying to control their 110 pound pup with a Flexi-retractable leash more suited for a small dog!

A popular alternative is to arrange a play date at a facility known as doggy daycare. Ask your neighbors and other dog owners who they might have used. Check the daycare's online reviews, and stop by and observe their operation. Schedule a "get-to-know-your-dog" visit and ask a lot of questions! Proof of up-to-date vaccinations are required, and follow your heart and nose to find one that meets your expectations. The properly staffed and trained dog daycare will have experienced staff engaging your pet. They will separate pets into compatible groups if needed, all in a large, fun-filled but safe fenced-in environment. Providing an action-filled day playing, running and interacting positively with other dogs and their minders can help calm an otherwise anxious or stressed dog. Even just hanging out on a couch together watching the rain come down outside, in the company of like-minded canines, can have a positive long term effect on any dog, preferably after chasing a tennis ball or Frisbee for hours! A well-run dog daycare can provide training or behavioral guidance, even an Agility course or wading pool to splash in. Your pooch soon will be begging you to take him or her there more often!
