Sadie the chocolate lab, a rescue previously owned by an elderly woman with a terminal illness, was almost never walked and very under socialized. She was 25 pounds heavier than she is now and was very reactive around other dogs. She’s about 13 years old and has been with Victoria for 7 years. Jasmine, the Chihuahua mix, is about 3 years old and came from Atlanta Pet Rescue. She spent the first 6 months of her life in a crate, so was very under socialized, timid, and not housetrained. Victoria Stilwell is a world-renowned dog trainer best known as the star of the international hit TV series It’s Me or the Dog and CBS’s Greatest American Dog. Her two best-selling books, It’s Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet and Fat Dog Slim: How to Have a Healthy, Happy Pet have been widely praised, and they detail her core reward-based training philosophy. A passionate advocate for positive reinforcement dog training methods, Stilwell is the Editor-in-Chief of Positively.com which features the world’s leading veterinary behaviorists, dog trainers and behavioral trainers. ©2015 PET PAGES

The Skinny on Pet Obesity
Fat Pets are nothing to be taken lightly. It is estimated that 52.5% of the US population of domesticated dogs and 58.3% of cats are ‘obese’. In addition; 45% of pet owners misdiagnose their pets as being a normal weight. ‘Obese’ and ‘overweight’ are not necessarily the same thing. The definition of obese is “grossly fat or overweight.” And synonyms include: fat, corpulent,
gross, stout, fleshy, heavy, portly, plump, paunchy, potbellied, broad in the beam, bulky, bloated, and flabby. None of which
I would think any of us would want to be used to described our pets/ loved ones, or any family member for that matter. In fact; due to their proportionately smaller body size compared to humans; it can take only an extra 5 lbs for your dog and a miniscule 2 extra lbs for your cat to be considered obese.
Obesity can lead to Diabetes, pancreatitis, orthopedic injuries, respiratory disease, kidney disease, arthritis and almost secondarily accelerate any other disease process in the body. It also delays healing and promotes an overall poor condition of health. Furthermore; obesity reinforces itself. Fat pets get tired more easily and move less which in turn causes them to burn less calories and gain more weight and become more obese.
But don’t let me be Debbie-Downer. If you have a pet that you feel is or may be obese, it is very possible to get them back to a healthy weight with the help of your veterinarian. Through diet regimens and exercise programs, I have seen the fattest of pets make the most remarkable transformations to a healthier lifestyle. Just like humans though; pets can have metabolic disease and other diseases that make them more prone to gaining weight so be sure you consult with your veterinarian about weight loss first before making any changes to their diet/ regimen. Especially with cats, changing or limiting foods can potentially endanger health and changing any food abruptly can cause diarrhea so please consult with your veterinarian first. And always remember; at the end of the day, you are in control of their feeding/ what they eat, so you are in control of your pet’s weight.

Consider a pet sitter and an area to keep them comfortable in while the party continues on.
Venue owners are wise to allow our 4
legged family members at the most important celebration of our lives. Not only will they allow your pet, but will help you make arrangements at the venue so that the are comfortable as well. The inclusion of our pets help make this special day a true family affair!
The Barn at Tatum Acres, Jasper
GA, recently booked a couple that will be bringing their 3 horses to the festivities. The venue is a working farm that is rented for the weekend. The stable area will be available for the horses, which the wedding party will ride into the ceremony. Another bride made sure her pet cow and pony were special guests at her farm reception.
T
he Wheeler House and The Corner District, both in Ball Ground GA, have been a popular destination for dog lovers with pets in bow ties, tux and tutus walking down the aisle, right alongside the other members of the wedding party. 21 ‑ ‑ 21

The Raw on Food
What you choose to feed your pet can be the single-most important decision you make for your pet. Feeding a high-quality diet can help you avoid painful and costly diseases later in your pet’s life. Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine” and we view it as both preventative and curative.
Raw food is the most species-appropriate for your dog and cat. It has come a long way in recent years in terms of convenience. You can now easily feed a diet that is most similar to the way he would choose if he could; the way he was intended to eat. Raw comes in pre-sized bulk blocks, patties, sausage links and bite-sized nibbles. Just defrost and feed.
Dehydrated and freeze-dried foods are excellent choices to ensure your pet is getting the most nutrients out of what he’s eating. Just add water and watch him drool. Diet rotation is also important. Just as we get different nutrients from different foods, so do our pets. Feeding the same food (even if it’s high-quality) day in, day out, year after year can lead to problems. Find a few options that work for your pet and rotate them. Remember, there is no one “right” pet food for every pet. You have to sift through the marketing gimmicks and hype to find what is right for your pet. The benefits of a proper diet are almost endless. At Fido’s Market, we take the health of your pet seriously and are here to help you dig in and find the best diet for your pet. sk us the #1 thing that every dog should have supplemented in their diet and we’ll tell you Answers Raw Goat’s Milk. This little miracle is beneficial in so many ways. There are more than 200 strains of probiotics (good bacteria to keep the intestinal tract healthy), over 60 digestive enzymes (everything the dog or cat needs for digestion) and prebiotics to feed the probiotics (good guys gotta eat too). It is complete nutrition and if your dog or cat couldn’t eat anything else for the rest of their life, they would derive all of the nutrients they need from the milk.
absorption of nutrients which in turns allows for a healthier pet. What are some specific things that Answers Raw Goat’s Milk can help with?
So why is all of this so important?
The probiotics in it help to rebuild good gut health. The vast majority of the immune system is in the digestive tract so a healthy digestive tract allows for a healthier immune system which in turn allows for a healthier pet. Bad bacteria in the digestive tract is protected by biofilm. The enzymes in Answers Raw Goat’s Milk help to break down the biofilm, allowing for better

Woofs Your Blood Type? Dogs have a complex blood type system in which they can be typed for the presence or absence of at least six different proteins (called Dog Erythrocyte Antigens or DEA) on the surface of their red blood cells. This mix and matching of different combinations of proteins
makes type specific transfusions difficult in dogs. Luckily, dogs do not have preexisting antibodies against foreign blood proteins and can typically receive one transfusion of a different blood type once. Dogs that require multiple transfusions may need to be cross matched with the donated blood to better assure compatibility. Cats have 3 basic blood types: A, B, and AB. Greater than 95% of cats in the United States are type A. Type B blood is more common in breeds such as Rexes and American Shorthairs. If your cat is Type B and is a blood donor, your cat will not likely donate often, but may be called upon with short notice to donate on an as needed basis. Blood transfusions are used to treat parasites, trauma, rat poisoning

You can also view the donation report and see how much the shelters are getting, right now it seems Georgia shelters aren’t doing as well as say California. ang your head out the window the whole way up winding roads, through dense forests and quaint old towns to the North Georgia Mountains. The Blue Ridge Mountains, preserved by mass land holdings and never to be touched by urban growth is the perfect place for creatures to get back to nature and let the wild dog out.Your family and your pets will enjoy hiking trails, lakes, rivers, mountain views, and strolling through historic small towns,
like Dahlonega, Helen, Clarkesville and Cleveland. Every season offers spectacular moments with festivals and events. For day trips, that must be made without your pet, consider a local daycare facility. Your pet might appreciate an adventure all their own. The North Georgia Mountains are a haven for relaxation and adventure for the whole family and you can include the furry ones, too!

s t c a F e Th s t e P t u Abo a i g r o e at G s k r a P e t Sta Dogs are welcome at Georgia's State Parks as long as they are on a 6-foot or shorter leash; however, they are not allowed in or around historic sites, lodges, group camps, swimming areas, or some trails at Panola Mountain and Tallulah Gorge. Dogs must never be left unattended, either in campsites, cottages or vehicles. Kennels are not available. Owners should clean up after pets. Dogs are allowed in all regular campgrounds. No additional fee is charged. Dogs are allowed in select "dog friendly" cottages with advance reservations. All state parks that offer cottages have at least one cottage that allows dogs. Keep in mind that “dog friendly" cottages often fill quickly. A $45 fee per dog (limit 2) is charged.
Reserving your cottage: • • •
You must request a dog-friendly cottage prior to arrival. Reservations are strongly encouraged. To make a reservation, call 1-800-864-7275 or visit GeorgiaStateParks.org. A fee of $45 per dog (limit 2) will be collected at check-in and covers the duration of your stay.
To stay in a cottage, your dogs must: • • • • • •
Have current vaccinations and be house trained. Be free of fleas, ticks and mange; and not be in heat. Please note: Guests will be asked to vacate their cottage if their dogs disturb other guests. Park management reserves the right to prohibit any dogs on the premises that may pose a risk to guests or staff, or has a history of causing trouble. Extra fees will be assessed when extra cleaning is required or if there is damage to the cottage or fixtures. Park management will assess damage fees based on materials and labor required to make necessary repairs. Kennels not provided: Park staff may be able to direct visitors to nearby kennels, but many locations do not have nearby facilities.

One of the most informative, inspiring and exciting lifesaving conferences about homeless pets in the nation will be here this summer. Atlanta, Georgia, will host the 2015 Best Friends National Conference from July 16-19 at the Cobb Galleria Center and the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel.
No matter what you do in animal welfare or how long you’ve been doing it — whether you’ve been saving lives for decades, only just begun or are just thinking about getting involved — you’ll find what you need to move forward in your effort to help homeless pets. From kitten care and spay/neuter programs to leadership training and methods for increasing adoptions, there will be eight tracks of conference sessions for attendees to choose from. Additionally, the Exhibition Hall will feature more than 50 companies and organizations showcasing the latest resources and support to assist in your efforts to end the killing in our nation’s animal shelters. And the connections you make with others just like you will keep your spirit soaring long after the conference ends.
Registration for the Best Friends National Conference is now open at www.bestfriends.org/conference. About Best Friends Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization dedicated exclusively to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. A leader in the no-kill movement, Best Friends runs the nation’s largest no-kill
sanctuary for companion animals, as well as lifesaving programs in partnership with rescue groups and shelters across the country. Since its founding in 1984, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in American shelters from 17 million per year to about 4 million. By continuing to build effective initiatives that reduce the number of animals entering shelters and increase the number who find homes, Best Friends and its nationwide network of members and partners are working to Save Them All®. For 30 years, Best Friends Animal Society has been focused on saving the lives of homeless dogs and cats. This work started with building the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals – now a temporary home to some 1,700 animals on any given day – and expanded to developing effective programs all across the country that reduce the number of animals entering shelters and increase the number who find homes. In its largest national effort yet, Best Friends is leading grassroots no-kill coalitions to turn Los Angeles into a no-kill city by 2017 and Utah a no-kill state by 2019. When Best Friends was founded in 1984, 17 million animals died every year in shelters across the country. Today, that number is down to about 4 million. That’s incredible progress, but it also means that more than 9,000 wonderful dogs and cats are still losing their lives every day. Together, we can change that. Join us. Together, we can Save Them All.

The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing. They each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent, his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.
