6.00 pm Closing Remarks
I am delighted to welcome you to the King’s Hall in Stoke-on-Trent. We are here today to recognise the amazing difference that staff make to the life of Staffordshire University. Now in its 15th year, our Celebrating Staff Success Awards event remains one of the most important dates in our calendar.
It is an opportunity to come together to mark the outstanding contributions our colleagues make in supporting our students, local communities and the wider region.
We have a wealth of talent at Staffordshire University. Staff fizzing with ideas and enthusiasm. Those who go above and beyond on a daily basis.
When we asked for nominations, we were looking for individuals and teams who embraced our key values. Our University is a ‘catalyst for change’ and a force for social good. Our values are to be fair and inclusive, curious and daring, innovative and enterprising, and ambitious and inspirational.
It wasn’t hard to find staff who fitted the bill. But it was hard to pick the winners as we had such a fantastic set of nominees.
This year, we have aligned the awards with our Towards 2030 University Strategy. They reflect the core strands of Next Generation Education, Next Generation Engagement, Next Generation Experience and Next Generation Environment.
The categories cover staff who have made a step change to our business engagement and enterprise activities, delivered an indelible impact through their research, and have been a catalyst for change within our wider communities.
They also recognise staff who have delivered an outstanding experience for students, those who have become role models for inclusion, and staff who have championed innovation in the curriculum and other aspects of our work.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your hard work and support. It has been a privilege to witness your valuable contributions and to see the impact on student achievement and services across our University.
Our staff remain our greatest asset. The work you have been doing – both within our University and surrounding communities – is central to our future success. I hope you enjoy this afternoon.
Best wishes,
Professor Martin Jones, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Staffordshire University
Professorial Conferments
Professors
The award of the title of Professor recognises staff members whose activities have brought prestige to the University through demonstrated quality and impact in their field. The criteria adopted by the University are intended to demand a level of achievement no less than that traditionally expected within British universities, although the nature of the achievement need not be confined to those activities traditionally recognised by a professorial title and reflects the vision and mission of Staffordshire University.
These are the three criteria on which candidates are assessed:
Dr Gillian Forrester
Professor of Education Policy Institute of Education
Gill’s scholarship, spanning over twenty years in higher education, has made a significant contribution to policy sociology through the critical analysis of education policy processes and its impact on pupils, parents, teachers, school leaders and students in higher education. Her research examines the complex relationship between externally determined change and professional practice. Gill’s work draws on sociological concepts and historical methods and utilises critical theories of organisation and gender. She has published widely and presented internationally on education policy processes providing a deeper understanding of the interplay between neoliberalism, national policy endeavours and the lived experience of those policies in practice. Gill is co-author of the book Education Policy Unravelled which charts and examines the nature of contemporary policy in Britain, its purposes and political formation. Gill leads the Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) at Staffordshire University. Through her leadership and supervision Gill provides doctoral researchers with the skills to think critically and creatively and apply theoretical knowledge to investigate reallife problems in their daily practice.
Dr Sarahjane Jones
Professor of Healthcare Safety and Performance School of Health, Science and Wellbeing
Sarahjane leads a thriving research team investigating safety in healthcare using big data to improve performance in service delivery. She is the Principal Investigator of the NuRS and AmReS projects funded by the Health Foundation to explore workforce retention in nursing and the pre-hospital setting. Her total current research portfolio sits at £850,000 and involves regional and national stakeholders. Mohamed is recognised as a MEDICI fellow, and a Senior Higher Education Academy (HEA) fellow. His pedagogic approach is founded on the idea that research, Learning, and Teaching are inextricably linked, therefore his teaching practice embeds by research in a way that students not only learn about current practice but can get involved themselves.
Dr Matthew Slater
Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology School of Health, Science and Wellbeing
Matthew is recognised as an internationally leading scholar on the psychology of leadership and group dynamics. In total, Matthew has published over 50 scholarly outputs, including 27 research outputs in the latest REF2021 period. He has published pedagogical research outputs and delivered invite talks on the area of student belonging. Matthew is recognised for his interdisciplinary teaching excellence across Schools at the University and for his development of seminal undergraduate and postgraduate modules based on his research.
Associate Professorial Conferments
Associate Professors
Associate Professors are defined by their growing distinction, standing and leadership in their subject, discipline and/or practice. Through their research and scholarship, external engagement and teaching, Associate Professors contribute to the advancement of the University’s reputation.

Professor Raheel Nawaz
Pro Vice-Chancellor - Digital
Staffordshire University’s new Pro Vice-Chancellor has been recognised with a National Teaching Fellowship for his ground-breaking work on degree apprenticeships.
Professor Raheel Nawaz has recently joined Staffordshire University from Manchester Metropolitan University where he headed up their Digital Degree Apprenticeships portfolio and founded the Apprenticeships Research Unit. He is one of 54 new National Teaching fellows announced by Advance HE which celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in higher education.
Professor Nawaz has advised on the establishment and launch of Degree Apprenticeships in Spain, New Zealand, Canada and Pakistan, has addressed the Westminster Education Policy Forum twice and has recently been commissioned by the QAA to systematically analyse the Degree Apprenticeships pedagogies across English universities and advise the sector on best academic practices.
Professor Nawaz said: “Innovation in teaching and learning is hugely important and I’m honoured to be recognised for my work in this specialised area. Degree Apprenticeships were launched in 2015 and are now getting a lot of recognition. Although more than 85 higher education institutions are now delivering programmes to over 82,000 students in the UK, the majority of these programmes have developed organically without systematic analysis of relevant pedagogies and their impact.”
“Staffordshire University is a leading provider of higher and degree apprenticeships and my research to analyse the pedagogical challenges of developing and delivering such programme and what has and hasn’t worked will continue here in partnership with several collaborating institutions.”
Next Generation Experience Award –Outstanding Contribution To Learning and Teaching
This award celebrates an individual or team who has delivered an outstanding learning and teaching experience to our students, who can demonstrate through their work, great student satisfaction and great student success. This could be through their work in immersive and simmersive environments, through hyper personalized learning, through phenomenon-based learning, trans disciplinary developments, internationalization or embedding employability.

We are delighted to reflect on what has been a fantastic year so far. Together, we have succeeded in delivering an excellent student experience throughout the year, which resulted in being named as the Top 5 UK University in the Student Crowd University Awards 2022, and our further success in the Research Excellence Framework.
It is wonderful to see so many colleagues document their experiences on and off campus, and participate in challenges with others on the Staff App. We saw some spook-tacular pumpkin carvings at Halloween, mouthwatering gingerbread houses for Christmas and plenty of heartfelt peer nominations for our #LoveStaffs campaign on Valentine’s Day.
We were delighted to be able to come together and take time to sparkle at our festive staff celebrations, as well as enjoy some festive cheer at The Christmas Carol Concert together with Mick the Vic, the Students’ Union, and the Christian Union.
As always, the University’s charitable work has continued through embedding our core strategies throughout all University activity and development: transforming places, transforming people, and transforming society. From joining forces with Alice Charity as our corporate charity of the year to support disadvantaged families across Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-Under-Lyme, to raising a “tee-rific” £3,745 at our annual University golf day.
In February The Catalyst officially opened, our flagship building, located on Leek Road at the heart of the University’s Stoke-on-Trent campus. By March we had launched our brand-new Centre for Health Innovation in Stafford, which brings sector-leading clinical simulations and immersion environments for professionals and students to learn new techniques.
Our summer graduation ceremonies took place in June within the heart of our Stoke-on-Trent campus and community. Despite a record-breaking heatwave, our staff came together to ensure our students were able to enjoy a memorable graduation day with their family and friends. History was also made at our Staffordshire University London campus with the first ever cohort of students to graduate!
We love seeing how you and your teams get involved in University events and activities, so don’t forget to keep sharing shout-outs and pictures of your special Staffs moments on Workvivo throughout the coming year – why not start with tonight?

Next Generation Environment –Sustainable Development Award
In recognition of the contribution made by an individual or a team towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 SDGs recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. Through teaching and learning, research, innovation, student engagement, or civic or employer engagement, an individual or team will have made a significant contribution to make sustainable changes for the better. These might relate to providing access to quality education, building sustainable cities and communities, reducing poverty, fighting inequality, upholding justice, achieving sustainable consumption, or taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

You Make Staffs
In December 2020, the University announced a monthly staff recognition scheme called You Make Staffs. The scheme aimed to recognise contributions made by individuals to our thriving University. These are often unsung heroes who may have received praise from a student or colleague that would otherwise go unrecognised. You Make Staffs will come to end this year, but as there are still a few Moorland Pottery mugs available, we would like to take this final opportunity to recognise any worthy winners who have gone above and beyond.

Roll of Honour
Big Wins
Staffordshire University was named winner of the Excellence in University/Industry Collaboration category at the TIGA UK Games Education Awards 2021. The award recognised the GVE Summer Showcase, an online event which gave students the opportunity to engage directly with industry experts during the pandemic. 2022
Staffordshire University was named Nurse Education Provider of the Year (Post-registration) at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2022 in May. This was in recognition of its MSc Advanced Clinical Practice course which aims to develop the talents of qualified nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals. The program was designed in response to increased demands on healthcare staff and was one of the first provisions to be accredited by Health Education England. Upon successful completion of the MSc, students can apply to join the National Directory for Advanced Clinical Practice.
Celebrating our graduating Classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Last November more than 4,000 graduands were recognised for their academic achievement in 26 ceremonies over two weeks. The ceremonies recognised the achievement of the Class of 2020 – whose ceremonies were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic – and both cohorts from the Class of 2021. This year’s ceremonies took place in July in record temperatures in the Kings Hall. The event made use of the Leek Road campus and the post ceremony reception took place in The Catalyst. The following week, in a midst of rail workers strike, the University celebrated the first graduating cohort from Staffordshire University London with a special ceremony on the Here East campus. We thank all staff for making these events such a special occasion for our graduates #proudtobeStaffs
Bids to level up
In the last year, the University has welcomed the success of funding bids which are part of the government’s levelling up agenda. Stoke-on-Trent was identified as priority places for the UK Community Renewal Fund and was successful in six bids for funding to the value of £2.5m. Staffordshire University is the lead on two bids collectively worth more than £1m and a partner on three other bids submitted by Stoke-on-Trent City Council. The Boosting Digital Inclusion in Stoke-on-Trent project is helping disadvantaged communities and digitally excluded individuals in the city to access digital services. Meanwhile the Innovation and Productivity Pathfinder project has helped Staffordshire employers to access University expertise and support towards the development of innovation plans and pathways and CPD training for their workforce.
Oh yes we did!
In December last year we launched the world’s first degree dedicated to the art of pantomime. The year-long MA Contemporary Pantomime Practice offers research and practical study of this much-loved British institution which brings in vital revenue to UK theatres each year. Developed in association with Wilkes Academy of Performing Arts, and supported by the UK’s leading pantomime producers, the emphasis is strongly vocational, providing formal industry training and careers networking through placements and work experience. Behind the course is Richard Cheshire and Dr Robert Marsden, who are recognised researchers and practicing experts in the field with a wealth of professional experience directing and performing pantomime.
New VC and other Exec appointments
On January 1st, Professor Martin Jones took over the role of Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive from Professor Liz Barnes CBE DL. Originally from Staffordshire, Professor Jones joined Staffordshire University as Deputy Vice Chancellor in 2017. He is fully committed to the civic role Staffordshire University plays in transforming the lives of people who can positively impact our society and the places in which we live. This and the University’s commitment to being ‘a force for social good’, is central to the ‘Catalyst for change’ strategic plan (2022 – 2027).
In February the University confirmed the appointment of Professor Kevin Hetherington to the post of Deputy ViceChancellor. Professor Hetherington, who was previously Pro Vice Chancellor at The Open University, took up his role on 1 March with specific responsibilities for mainstreaming the research agenda, further development of the academic strategy and providing strategic leadership on internationalisation.
In July, Professor Raheel Nawaz joined the Executive team as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Digital Transformation. Professor Nawaz is a renowned expert in work-integrated programmes like Degree Apprenticeships and he has recently been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship for his work in this field. He is also a leading researcher in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Educational Data Science and holds several adjunct professorships and scientific directorships across Asia and North America.
The Catalyst opens
The University’s new flagship building opened in February with a week-long celebration for staff, students, businesses and the wider community. The £43 million building on Leek Road operates as a ‘University within a building’ bringing together social, study, teaching and support functions as well as delivering events space, community space and catering outlets.
Part of our Next Generation Environment, The Catalyst is a world-class setting to support students through their education and towards their employment, as well as being a hub for our employer partners and apprentices.
And so does CHI
Staffordshire University opened the doors of its new £5.8 million state-of-the-art Centre for Health Innovation in March. Featuring the most advanced health simulation technology, CHI offers a series of flexible and immersive simulation spaces designed to enhance clinical competency and the learning experience for students. The new Centre was part-funded by Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) via the Government’s Getting Building Fund. The facility was officially opened by Professor Mark Radford CBE, Chief Nurse for Health Education England and Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for England and an honorary graduate of Staffordshire University. As well as being the study base for more than 2,000 student nurses, midwives, operating department practitioners and paramedics, the Centre is paving the way for new collaborations with local business and healthcare and technology industries.
Good Ofsted for apprenticeships
An Ofsted inspection focused on our apprenticeships provision, and carried out in January, found the University to be “Good” in all areas including quality of education, leadership and management, behaviour and attitudes and personal development. The University has grown the provision of higher and degree apprenticeships considerably from 150 in 2015 to more than 2,600 at present. Many apprentices are studying on the Level 6 police constable degree apprenticeship delivered in partnership with four local police forces: Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Mercia and West Midlands. Other major areas of apprenticeships study are nursing, healthcare and business. The university currently delivers more than 20 different higher and degree apprenticeships to more than 200 employers including the NHS, BT, Merlin Entertainments and Bentley Motors.
Corporate charity
Following a vote by staff, Alice Charity was announced as the University’s official corporate charity for 2022, with funds raised throughout the year distributed equally between the North Staffordshire charity and The Horizon Fund. Steph Talbot, who was recognised with an honorary degree at this summer’s Awards Ceremonies, and her daughter Emily Petts, founded Alice Charity in 2011 in response to the lack of available support for disadvantaged, local families. Today, Alice Charity continues to provide vulnerable families with emotional and practical support, for as long as it is needed, and in 2021
alone helped more than 3,500 families across the region. The charity also works to encourage and empower local people to volunteer and embrace other opportunities in employment and education. By providing this support, Alice Charity is increasing aspirations and skills that will positively influence and impact families and their community.
REF
In May, we welcomed the results of REF 2021 which has recognised more of our research as “internationally excellent” and “world leading”. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. Overall, 68% of Staffordshire University’s research was judged 3* “internationally excellent” and 4* “world leading”, up from 37% in 2014 when the last REF results were announced. In addition, 87% of the University’s research impact has been rated as “very considerable” or “outstanding”, again the two highest categories of measurement. This resulted in a rise of 22 places in the Times Higher League Table to =86. Staffordshire University entered seven Units of Assessment; Allied Health; Engineering; Archaeology, Business and Management, Social Work and Social Policy; Art and Design and Communication and Cultural Studies. Each unit had research which has been recognised as 4* or “world leading.” The University rated most highly for Art and Design where 91% of its research was recognised as 4* and 3* and 100% of research impact was judged to be “very considerable” or “outstanding”.
We’re top 5 according to student reviews
In June we were named 4th in the Best UK Universities category at the StudentCrowd University Awards. The StudentCrowd University Awards are the only independent awards based entirely on verified student reviews. Staffordshire University made the Top 20 in four of the 11 categories in the 2022 Awards including a 9th place for Job Prospects, 14th for Course Content and 16th for Teaching Quality. Both Staffordshire and neighbouring Keele appear in this year’s overall Top 5, demonstrating that students who choose to study in Staffordshire rate their experience highly. Last year Stoke-on-Trent also rated 6th cheapest UK city for student accommodation.
Creating an entrepreneurial city
A new Masters course which aims to put Stoke-on-Trent on the map as a leading city for innovation and wealth creation launched in June. The new Peter Coates MSc in Entrepreneurship has been made possible thanks to a collaboration with the City’s philanthropist Peter Coates and the Peter Coates Foundation. Beginning in January 2023, the Peter Coates Fast Forward Programme will offer emerging entrepreneurs the practical business education skills and support they need to start new businesses in Stoke-onTrent. Full bursaries will be available from the Peter Coates Foundation and non-academic criteria will be used to support applications.
Short Courses and microcredentials
Bitesize courses, which allow people the opportunity to study at degree level and apply for financial help to do so, have launched at Staffordshire University. The University is one of just 22 universities to trial Higher Education Short Courses as part of the government’s pledge to offer thousands of adults the opportunity to retrain and upskill. As part of the pilot, Staffordshire University and its college partners will be delivering five courses in subject area such as digital innovation, healthcare and achieving Net Zero. Our University has also established a system for
microcredentials which allow students to learn and build credit at different levels (4 to 7) through individually assessed blocks or modules. Collegeauges have also worked on a report with the Lifelong Education Commission which makes the case for more agile forms of education to plug skills gaps. The report highlights the advantages of microcredentials such as providing flexibility for learners, being an accessible and affordable route for adult learners. Key recommendations outlined in the report, include a government mapping exercise of all micro-learning courses in the UK to inform future policy making and funding, and tax incentives for employers to invest in this form of workforce training.
TOWARDS 2030: CATALYST FOR CHANGE
Our Strategic Plan explains our vision of what we want to be and how we are making that vision a reality.
Staffordshire University is a ‘catalyst for change’ a force for social good that transforms the lives of people, who will transform our society and the places in which we live.
We have a clear direction through our Strategic Plan history has shown we work best as a University when we are ambitious, when we disrupt and innovate, when we work together on common priorities, and when we truly live our values.
Our values are to always be:
• ambitious and inspirational
• fair and inclusive
• curious and daring
• innovative and enterprising
We plan to achieve our goals by embedding our core strategies throughout all University activity and development: transforming places, transforming people, and transforming society.
Be the Catalyst for Change
This isn’t a new mission – it has been in our DNA for over 100 years. We will be this catalyst for change – the beating heart of our University, in the centre of our communities and everything we do –through our four independent priorities:
• Next Generation Education
• Next Generation Experience
• Next Generation Engagement
• Next Generation Environment
These ‘Next Gen’ priorities will ensure we are different to what has come before, different from our competitors, leading the way in embracing technology and how we work and study.
