WHAT IS POSTGRADUATE STUDY? The term ‘postgraduate’ refers to the level of study after undergraduate level (your first degree, usually a bachelors degree). Having said that, not all postgraduate courses require an undergraduate degree, some courses, often professional development courses, will accept relevant industry experience if you don’t already hold an undergraduate degree. Remember, each course has its own entry requirements, these can be found on the course pages of our website. Within the cluster of postgraduate courses, there are various levels of study available including: Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) and postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) – Diplomas and Certificates are often vocational programmes of study or structured in a similar way to masters programmes. These courses are usually assessed by exams and coursework and a dissertation is not required. Typically these are six to nine months in length depending on your chosen study mode.
3
DOCTORATES
Doctoral awards involve conducting original research independently that makes a significant contribution to the knowledge of a specific subject. On completion, you will be awarded the title of PhD (Doctor of Philosophy).
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TAUGHT AND RESEARCH: Taught These are the postgraduate courses most similar to undergraduate study. You will learn through lectures, workshops and tutorials as well as essays, assignments and project work.
MASTERS DEGREES
Masters degrees are usually intensive taught programmes with a dissertation or project. Full-time study typically lasts one year in length, with part-time study usually taking two years to complete. Our range of masters degrees includes: • Master of Arts (MA) • Master of Business Administration (MBA) • Master of Law (LLM) • Master of Science (MSc)
MASTERS BY RESEARCH
Studying for a masters degree by research offers the opportunity to pursue an independent research project while benefiting from the support of expert supervision. Typically this takes one year full-time or two to three years part time. Our range of masters research degrees include: • Master of Philosophy (MPhil) • Master of Research (MRes) • Master of Arts (MA) by research • Master of Science (MSc) by research
4
Research The main activity of a research-based course is usually to produce one, or possibly more, pieces of original research.
At Staffordshire University we understand the demands of postgraduate study and know that it can be hard, that’s why we offer various structures to fit your study around other commitments such as family, work, lifestyle and finance. We also have postgraduate experts available to you at all times to provide guidance and answer any questions you might have.

STUDENT CASE STUDIES
Why follow the crowd when you can follow your own curiosity? Our graduates have an edge over the rest because they followed their curiosity and thought for themselves, from the first day until the last. It’s this state of mind that allows them to achieve great things, no matter their situation. And if you don’t believe us, see what some of our successful postgraduate students have to say:
KAYLEIGH SHEPPARD
FORENSIC SCIENCE PhD – A Staffordshire University undergraduate who progressed straight to postgraduate. As graduates look back over their experiences at University, not many students would list murder reconstruction and post-mortems as particular highlights, but it has led forensic scientist Kayleigh Sheppard to the forefront of crime scene investigation research. Since graduating with a first-class degree in Forensic Science in 2013, Kayleigh has joined forces with Staffordshire Police to investigate the potential of digital imaging technology in solving crimes and is now undertaking a PhD at Staffordshire University to further her research in this area. “I was very excited, and felt very privileged that I was accepted for a placement with Staffordshire Police to conduct a project of my choice working alongside the Forensics Department,” says Kayleigh. “The nature of the project I undertook gave me the opportunity to gain real world experience working with Scenes of Crimes Officers, where I could put my knowledge from University into practice” Due to the progress made with the project, and the response it received from police staff, it was decided that Kayleigh should have the opportunity to continue with her research and develop it within a PhD.
12
“Our lecturers have inspired us to do things outside the University. At the conferences I’ve been able to network with employers and do everything to ensure I end up with a good job in the field” Now, Kayleigh is testing the use of the Spheron-VR Sceneworks technology, which consists of 360 degree camera and associated software which allows a visual file of a crime-scene to be uploaded and stored on a remote server where it can be accessed by authorised personnel working on the case. It also allows for the addition of ‘hotspots’ which can point investigating officers to detailed physical evidence such as laboratory analysis of fingerprints and blood spatters, detailed photographs and even witness statements which can all be stored on the system. “This PhD research will allow me to further test the efficiency of this type of technology within police forces with the hope of implementation to aid in crime scene management and presentation,” says Kayleigh.

THE TEAM ARE REALLY FRIENDLY AND COME FOR DINNER WITH THE STUDENTS IN THE EVENINGS. IT IS ALSO GREAT TO MEET THE OTHER STUDENTS ON THE COURSE FACE TO FACE.
CLARE MCCALL
Clare McCall - SPORT AND EXERCISE MSc – A mum who has balanced postgraduate study, work and family life.
Sport and Exercise postgraduate student Clare McCall says she has been on an ‘amazing educational journey’ since joining the University in 2012.
Clare says the course workshop training days are invaluable opportunities to gain extra guidance and socialise with lecturers and students.
Now immersing herself into researching the relationship between mental health and physical activity, Clare says her time on the course has given her a wonderful sense of achievement.
She added: “The team are really friendly and come for dinner with the students in the evenings. It is also great to meet the other students on the course face to face.”
She said: “This is a challenging course. If it was easy, it would not be as satisfying to complete it. It may sound like a cliché, but I really feel as though I have been on an amazing educational journey over the past two years, gaining insight into so much psychology that can be applied to everyday life. “The course staff are excellent; all of them have demonstrated expertise and a strong desire to help and pass on their knowledge in an accessible and friendly way.”
14
Another important reason for attending the workshop training days, says Clare, is the positive and inspirational vibes you pick up just from having contact with the module leaders, which really help to cement any burning ambitions you may have to become a sport psychologist. Clare said: “I always leave the campus feeling very up-beat about my future career in sport psychology. Throughout the duration of the course, I have been really impressed with the organisation of the course and its content.”
CHLOE MCCORMICK
PGCE – studied an undergraduate degree with Staffordshire University, went into work and then returned after a few years in the workplace to study something completely new. Chloe McCormick has had a career of two halves – first as a commercial photographer and second as a schoolteacher. She graduated from Staffordshire University with a degree in Business Management in 2008, taking up a full-time job with Photo Corporation in Northampton. When she decided it was time for a career change, she returned to the University in 2014 for a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) before joining Walsall Academy. “I had worked my way up in Photo Corporation over the six years I was there and I thought it was time for a change,” Chloe explained. “I thought of Staffordshire University and, as it was the only place doing a Business PGCE near to where I live, I went for it.” Before becoming a fully qualified secondary school teacher, Chloe had worked her way up to a managerial role at Photo Corporation, where she was responsible for a team of people, hiring new staff, training and hitting company targets. “I thought I was busy then,” she said, “But I had no idea what was coming when I became a teacher!”
In 2014, Chloe, 28, started her PGCE, commuting from Tamworth to the University once a week and spending the other four days on placement. “It was immediately completely different from my last job,” she recalled. “I had two placements during the course, one was at Walsall Academy, where they offered me a job. On Fridays I’d meet with the lecturers and other students and discuss our lesson plans and any problems we had during the week. It was really useful to learn from each other.” “I officially started at Walsall Academy in September 2015. I’m teaching from Year 9 to Sixth Form students. It was a steep learning curve and I’m really busy but I’m really enjoying it. I’d like to stay in secondary education because the students are amazing. I love their inquisitiveness about the world and they are guaranteed to make me laugh every single day.”
Chloe first joined the studio photography firm when she was 18, employed to canvas for new business. From there she took up the camera and moved between departments over the years, at the same time studying for her Business Management degree. It wasn’t until she graduated that she was promoted to manager. “I fell into the role initially,” Chloe explained. “I was 18 and saw the job advert – it was £7 an hour which was a lot of money to me back then. I worked throughout the whole of my degree and enjoyed doing it, so it was an obvious choice to stay there after I graduated and got promoted.”
