CHILDREN’S NURSING Children’s Nursing involves caring for babies, infants, children and young people up to 18 years of age. Children’s Nursing offers an exciting, interesting, challenging and particularly rewarding career.
MENTAL HEALTH NURSING Mental Health Nursing involves working with people of all ages. It can range from working with a family where a child needs support, through to working with adults who have severe depression or dementia. Mental Health Nursing requires patience and perseverance, as it can take several weeks or even months to help someone change their behaviour. But the benefits can directly enhance the quality of that person’s life.

A fantastic opportunity “I’m glad I chose Staffordshire University. The nursing and midwifery team gave me the opportunity to work within four different paediatric inpatient settings and a wide variety of community placements. During my three years’ training, I worked on general paediatric wards; Ear, Nose and Throat; Special Care Baby Units; A&E, and an Orthopaedic specialist ward. I was also able to work with health visitors, community nurses, school nurses and other professionals – such as child protection specialists, child psychologists, epilepsy and asthma nurse specialists, and even palliative care workers. The University gave me the chance to experience nursing in a number of settings. My placements allowed me to appreciate the importance of nurses in the community and their role in ensuring children develop in as normal an environment as possible. 9
Fully supported Clinical placements are a fantastic opportunity to put into practice what you have learnt in lectures. Working alongside skilled nurses, I was offered support from mentors and co-mentors to achieve objectives set by myself, and the University to meet the demands of the care setting. In all my placements, I felt fully supported and was able to form positive professional relationships with my mentor and other members of the team, in order to contribute to the ward and develop professionally. As I gained confidence, I was able to facilitate the care of my own patients, working alongside my mentor and making decisions based on my observations and assessment of the patient. As a student I felt I was at times in a better position to build good relationships with families in order to gain trust than some staff nurses. I will always remember when a young adolescent told me how nice it was that I had taken 10 minutes out of my day to stop and have a conversation with her. I honestly believe this made the world of difference to her day. When undertaking written assessments, I again felt very well supported. Tutors and lecturers were always available for tutorials and easily accessed by email. All my assignments were geared towards Paediatric nursing and always included the opportunity to research areas of interest, or where my knowledge was lacking. The library contained a vast amount of books, ranging from anatomy and physiology to specialist literature, such as asthma care. Staffordshire University fully equipped me with the skills and knowledge I needed to undertake my job as a Staff Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. I have, however, learnt that your learning as a nurse only really begins when you set foot on the wards as a staff nurse. Staffordshire University has a very good reputation for producing knowledgeable and highly skilled nurses – which I feel is due to the wide range of opportunities given to students.” Kirsty Lewis – RN Dip. Nursing Practice (Children’s) Staff Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London

Nursing Standard Nurse Of The Year
“I did my nursing training at Staffordshire University and qualified with a BSc in Child Health in 2004. After qualifying, I took up a post in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. I’m now working as a Staff Nurse at HMP Stafford. I wanted to let you, and all the other tutors that helped and supported me through my nurse training, know that in March I won ‘Nursing Standard Nurse Of The Year 2012’. So many thanks for all the support that I received during my time as a student with you. If at any time you’d like me to come into the University and give a talk to the student nurses, I would be more than happy to.” Johanne Tomlinson, BSc(Hons) Nursing Practice (Children’s) BSc(Hons)Nursing Practice (Mental Health)
“The lecturers are really friendly and approachable. I always feel supported by them, and know if I have any problems I can talk to my personal tutor. The variety of clinical placements has given me the opportunity to link the knowledge I have gained in University to clinical settings, developing my confidence, communication and nursing skills. I have had lots of great experiences in practice and look forward to a future in nursing.” Hayley Smith, BSc(Hons) Nursing Practice (Children’s)
“Recently a friend asked me what was the best part of my job. My answer: seeing our nursing students emerge as confident and enthusiastic professionals, with a knowledge and skill set which can positively change the future of nursing. The knowledge that I have contributed in part is true job satisfaction.” Leisa Meigh, Children’s Nursing lecturer

DEFERRED ENTRY If you wish to defer entry to your chosen course for one year we’ll still welcome your application
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? After we’ve considered your application, UCAS will notify you of our decision. If you’re successful, we’ll also invite you to visit us and attend one of our Visit Days. In some cases, you may be invited to attend an interview before we decide whether to offer you a place.
AFTER RECEIVING YOUR RESULTS However confident you are about achieving the results you need, things don’t always go to plan. Prepare for all eventualities. If you don’t meet the precise conditions of the offer we made you, don’t worry. It may still be possible for us to offer you a place on your chosen course. Contact us for advice as soon as you can.
CLEARING The UCAS clearing process gives students an additional opportunity to find a place. Most universities prefer to consider students who made an application first time round.
UCAS EXTRA This is the opportunity to apply for another course if you have used all five choices and not secured a place. UCAS Extra runs from the end of February until the end of June.
