OUR COURSES

AND HOW THEY ARE STRUCTURED

There are a number of different types of courses and qualifications offered at Staffordshire University beyond a traditional degree. Opposite is a brief description to help you understand more about the levels of study and variations between them, but its first worth exploring how the courses are defined.

“I have found the course tremendously useful and enjoyable, so much so that I am thinking about studying the postgraduate course next academic year. I hugely recommend it to anyone interested in or currently in a marketing role.” Anna Woolliscroft Plus UK Ltd.

10

CREDITS AND THE LEVELS OF STUDY AVAILABLE Within Higher Education the terms “credit” and “level” refer to the way in which courses are structured. Credit’s are awarded after successfully completing a block of learning, which may be a module, a unit, or a qualification. One credit requires you to undertake 10 hours of learning – this can combine classroom based study, selfstudy, group work, research etc. Many institutions operate credit accumulation and transfer schemes (CATS). This allows you to build up a qualification from smaller modules or units, to break off and return to your studies, or to have your learning recognised and if your work or home life requires, you may wish to transfer the credits to a different institution. In its simplest form, you accumulate credit through continued study of a particular subject. As your knowledge grows and you complete modules/units or qualifications you can use them to progress through to higher levels. Further guidance on this can be found on the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) website, and on the Learning Journey Planner on page 12.

Call 0800 169 2148 or email forbusiness@staffs.ac.uk

THE DIFFERENT COURSE TYPES WE OFFER INCLUDE: Foundation Degrees: If you are trying to find your way into Higher Education, a Foundation Degree can offer the first step before progressing onto an honours degree. They often combine academic study with work-based learning.

Professional short courses: Some of these courses are accredited by professional bodies, others by the University. These courses provide a good introduction to new areas of skill development.

HND: High National Diplomas (HNDs) can range in duration and are often at level 5 and a progression from a Higher National Certificate (HNC). If you already have a HND, we offer a range of courses that allow you to “top-up” to a full honours degree in as little as 12 months.

CPD: Continuing Professional Development refers to your commitment to maintain and improve your knowledge, skills and competencies to further your professional development. This can be achieved through any of the routes outlined above, in addition to self-guided study. It is the continuous process of learning, enabling you to keep in touch with developments in your field.

Diploma: There are 2 different types of Diploma that we offer. A University Diploma is available at level 5 and an Advanced University Diploma is at level 6. Credits from these courses may be used to progress further onto higher level courses. Undergraduate Degrees - BEng/BSc/BA(Hons): These are traditional undergraduate degrees offered full-time (usually 3 years), part-time (up to six years) and some are available through our partner colleges. Fast-track: There are a range of two-year “fasttrack” undergraduate degree courses available, allowing you to condense your study into a shorter period of time.

BA, BSc, BEng, MBA, MEng, MSc, MA: BA/MA – this is an Arts based Bachelor’s degree/Masters degree. BSc/MSc – this is a Science or Technology based Bachelor’s degree /Masters degree. BEng/MEng – this is an Engineering based Bachelor’s degree /Masters degree. LLB is a Bachelor’s level qualification but refers to those courses specifically related to law. MBA – Masters in Business Administration.

Masters Degrees/Postgraduate study – MBA/ MSc/MEng/MA: These are offered as full-time, part-time and through distance learning to take your graduate level study to the highest level.
