AMERICAN FOOTBALL Keele have never beaten Staffordshire, and after a dominant 57-6 win in the league, the Stallions will be looking to improve on that record in style. This is the Stallions first ever home Varsity event, a game which deserves an atmosphere to match.

BADMINTON Our club is one of the universities biggest and using our members we have built a team to be reckoned with! We have 3 competitive BUCS league teams and they have been combined to help crush Keele. Several players also compete at county and national level and one of our players has won the Basil Ashford Award for her badminton success. Varsity is a big date in the calendar and an important fixture for us so come down to our game at 11 o’clock and show some support. GO TEAM STAFFS!

BADMINTON The season for Badminton Women’s First Team has been pleasing this year. We won varsity last year quite comfortably and are hoping to do so again this year. With 5 out of the 6 ladies in the varsity squad being in their final year. The season for the Badminton Men’s First Team has been extremely tough in Division 1A. I believe this year will be equally tight - but we hope the success people enjoyed at the BUCs individual championship and the addition of fresher Strathan Chun will allow us to beat our rivals Staffordshire once again.

MEN’S BASKETBALL One of the biggest winning streaks by staffs. Year in year out staffs stealers dish out a beating to keele. Previous year highlights including dunking on Keele boys, this showing our ability of having higher aims to our game. This year is not one to miss having big threats inside and 3 point assassins ready to fire shots. Will be hosted at Fenton manor sports complex to give the ability to give seating for one of the best events for varsity.

MEN’S BASKETBALL The team’s performance in the BUCS league had been decent, there were good and bad results. After the last few years of disappointment in Varsity against the Staffs Uni basketball team, team captain Jason Chair and club captain Taboka Ncube and every member of this team know it won’t be an easy job going head to head with one of Staffs Uni’s best sports team but are very determined to get a win over them when the day comes.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The women’s basketball team, will play against Keele on Tuesday. One of the greatest basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan once said “Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.” And that is what we as a team are going to do together. We may not win but we will try our best and go into the game with positive thoughts. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL It has been a difficult season for the team which has been forced to overcome a number of challenges, such as limited training time and missing key players. Despite this we have remained competitive throughout the league. Heading towards varsity we are confident that the continued work of rookies in practice and games combined with the return of key players will put us in the best position to succeed at varsity.

CRICKET With 4 fresh faces to the squad this year we’ve added energy, excitement and aggression to the team, whilst maintaining experience with 3 players from last years varsity. After a mixed indoor season which saw us lose narrowly to Keele and beating the eventual winners of the league twice, this was then mixed with some poor performances. Throughout the season though we maintained a niche of 10 players rotated for various games so we feel excited and prepared for this years varsity. Let’s bring it home. Let’s get behind #teamstaffs.

CRICKET KUCC have had a fantastic indoor season both in BUCS and in the local Clayton league with some very experienced performances. In the indoor league, finishing second shows our consistently good performances from the squad. With two wins over Staffs Uni, including an 80 run win, confidence is high in the Keele University Cricket Club who are looking to add to the current three year KUCC winning streak.

FENCING The Staffs men’s fencing team this year is a veteran squad that’s taken on a new experienced fresher to bolster the squad which has done well in difficult games against stiff opposition. I’m proud of the boys this year and it’s now just one final effort to top of an excellent university fencing career for several of the members departing this year. Every one looks forward to schooling keele up and down the piste and disabusing any notions they have about an easy win. Keele’s record doesn’t scare us we’re used to underdog fights.

We are fortunate to have a strong and dedicated team lined up for Varsity, all of whom have trained hard for this season’s matches. After achieving promotion to the BUCS Northern 1A League this year, the team has performed well with a number of victories under its belt. Last year we won a landslide victory against Staffordshire in Varsity, and had a huge turnout from our fellow Keelites to support the team. I am confident the team will put on a good show again this year, and achieve another spectacular victory as we have done in years past. I do hope you will be able to come along to cheer the team on and enjoy the excitement of a thrilling match. Look forward to seeing you there!

MEN’S FOOTBALL
We’ve been collecting good results throughout the majority of this season, everyone involved is excited for varsity. An original squad of 22 was selected and then filtered down to 16 for the match day; this was difficult for the coaching staff with everyone training to an excellent standard and having a huge desire to play. Adding an additional weekly training session into help with the preparations has furthered the boy’s development. As stated previously we are sure that the game will be a tough one with Keele having a top quality side, however we believe with the preparations and a good loud staffs crowd behind us come the 18th of March Staffs can gain a point and contribute to hopefully winning the overall competition.

MEN’S LACROSSE This year more than any year is our time to show Keele that a Staffs team can play lacrosse instead of just being physical. Our defence is going to be a key factor in this game, over the course of the year we have conceded very few goals because of the work that is put in at the back by Arthur Muir and Blayne Riley to name but a few. TENNIS
After a promising start to the season following a 6-6 draw at home to runaway league leaders Anglia Ruskin, two comfortable wins over Coventry University mark the highlights of a year where victory over Bedford in our final league game could see us rise to third. We welcome Keele to our new training facility at Florence Tennis Club, Dresden, with the aim of retaining our hard-fought point gained in last years dramatic win. On that occasion, a single champions tie-break decided the destination of the Varsity point in a tightly contested battle. A response from a bruised Keele side, who have only one league win to their name all season, is to be expected, but we will look to inflict further damage and finish our season on a high.

TENNIS Last season we lost some of our best players as they left Keele and we always knew it was going to be hard to replace them. So far this year we have struggled to do so with both our teams sitting at the bottom of their leagues. Hopefully we can win these matches and be able to go into varsity with confidences high. Last year at varsity we lost on a tie break shoot out in a very close match and this year Staffs have also struggled in their league. So this year’s varsity is shaping up to once again be very tight!

ULTIMATE FRISBEE We’ve had a great season so far, narrowly missing nationals qualification in both the open and mixed divisions. We’ve got a strong squad thanks to some successful recruiting at the start of the year. As a result we will be looking for a repeat of last year’s victory over staffs. Being in the same division as staffs means we have developed quite a rivalry, our game is likely to be as fast paced and as physical as the non-contact rules will allow.

VOLLEYBALL For another year the Staffs Volleyball team will be lead to victory by the Ex England Junior and National league player, the Captain Stefan Cowley. After losing all but two other players from last year’s team, the aim this year has been to rebuild and acquire a structured level of play, focusing on teaching the basics and finding the strengths of each athlete whilst minimalizing their weaknesses. The Volleyball team aims to impress the crowd once again and prove to everyone the strength of Staffordshire Universities Sports Teams.
