DeanO : 46 years at Staines Hockey Club

For those who don’t know me . My name is Dean “DeanO” and I have been a playing member at Staines Hockey Club for over 40 years, 46 to be precise. I hold the honour, along with Philip Lazlo, as the current longest serving playing member. My present role is Men's Club Captain and Men's 5s Captain and over the years various other roles! How I first got into playing hockey all those years ago was a bit of a sliding doors moment. 13

Staines Hockey Club Magazine

I started at Staines HC in 1976 (I think? as the memory is a bit foggy!!) but I do know I was still at school (Matthew Arnold). At the time it was still a girls’/boys’ school split into opposite ends of the building with a red line running across the adjoining corridors; you crossed at your peril. The sports for the boys were football and cricket, only the girls played hockey! In my second year the school went co-ed (mixed) and during that first week the girls’ gym head Ms Pugh, was on the lookout for volunteers to play hockey. As no one wanted to step forward, she just pointed at the first twenty boys, grab a stick she said “go and run around with a ball”; most of us found out we quite enjoyed it. Ms Pugh suggested after a few weeks to pop along to Staines HC, as they were hoping to start a boy’s junior team.

Mike Smith (Mercian) was keen to attract some new blood into Staines Hockey Men's Club!!! so after some coaching the colts of “77” were established and my new hockey career was starting; I never thought for one second that I would still be playing now. Not being the most gifted player, I have still managed to play at every level at the club (only playing Men's 1s on the one occasion because they were very very short, but it still counts!). Most of my playing career was for the Men's 3s before the steady decline and age took their toll. I will always look back fondly on the bygone years when it was an early start on match days, as all the grass pitches had to be marked up with white playing lines and netting fixed onto goals. Then, as all the games started at the same time, a fight to get into the showers and then the bar; on many occasions there would be 100+ players all wanting their jugs of beer and sandwiches; my hockey education had well and truly started. A lot has happened to the club over the years I have been a member, from the formation of the Ladies’ Section, the purchase of the ground from London Transport and our first Astro, all leading to this vibrant, successful and inclusive club that we have now, I will always be eternally grateful that hockey found me, and lucky that my local club was Staines.

Cheers, Dean 14

World hockey to launch penalty corner project in bid ‘to keep spectacle and curb dangers’ The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is set to investigate the dangers of the penalty corner routine while maintaining the “excitement and spectacle” of the set piece, the world body admitting that trial rules could be implemented to enhance safety. The FIH executive board has approved to launch a ‘global penalty corner consultation project’, which aims to gather input from the hockey community. The fact that the sport’s ruling body is looking into the PC suggests that it is concerned over danger, although there is little global research on the subject due to inadequate injury monitoring across the globe.

The introduction of England Hockey’s new talent system continues with both the accreditation of the first cohort of Talent Centres and the appointment of the first Talent Academies to be confirmed this spring. The initial cohort of 37 clubs working towards Talent Centre accredited status have put in an enormous amount of work over the last six months, supported by the Talent Team at England Hockey. The end of March will be the first opportunity for clubs to be evaluated against the criteria and we look forward to recognising the first Talent Centre accredited clubs over the coming weeks. Working closely with clubs, we know that some will need a little more time so there will be a second evaluation window between March and the end of June 2022. We have received positive feedback from cohort 1 clubs on the resources, workshops, and individual support that they have been able to access as they work towards Talent Centre accreditation. These are helping to guide clubs as they further develop high quality provision and environments for young athletes at the early talent development stage (Talent Foundations). In December 2021, we held engagement workshops for clubs interested in being involved in the second Talent Centre cohort, and plan to run some more in June ahead of inviting expressions of interest for 2022/23. We expect to be able to confirm the clubs involved in Talent Centre cohort 2 in late July 2022. County Hockey, which has provided an invaluable training environment to thousands of young players for so many years, remains a key component of the Talent Foundations stage of the new system. Local County Hockey activity will continue to be administered and delivered by counties alongside club and school activity. The Talent Academy appointment process is ongoing. Talent Academies are intended for the highest potential 15 – 18-year-old players. We estimate that at present there are approximately 500 players per gender ready for the intensity and commitment of a Talent Academy. All applicants have received one to one meetings and multiple contacts with members of the Talent Team to establish their readiness to host and effectively deliver a Talent Academy. Ever thought of Coaching Hockey? ‘’Good players inspire themselves, great players inspire others’’ ‘’It’s not how big you are it’s how big you play’’ ‘’Sometimes you win sometimes you learn’’ ‘’You only see obstacles when you take your eyes off the goal’’ Four recent motivational hockey coaching quotes. At Staines Hockey Club we have some fantastic coaches involved at all levels. Without our coaches there would be no hockey! We are very keen to add to this group of experts. Whether it is introducing someone to the game for the first time, working with a club side or engaging with the performance environment across Great Britain, the coach is a critical factor in determining the quality of a player’s experience.

What is a great hockey coach? Great hockey coaches can be defined by four key characteristics

Self – Coaches who know themselves and why they coach, striving to continually develop and improve

Staines Hockey Club Magazine

Player - Coaches who build effective and sustainable relationships, with and around the player, to support their wants and needs. Environment - Coaches who are architects of environments that optimise learning, where players feel valued and actively participate in their own development. Game - Coaches who develop their knowledge and understanding of hockey appropriate to the participant need. England Hockey run courses and workshops throughout the year and will help develop anyone interested in coaching Junior and/or Adult hockey. There is a wealth of coaching information online at the England Hockey website which can be found at https://www.englandhockey.co.uk/deliver/coach/coach-getting-started Staines Hockey Club will support anyone interested. Please speak to any of the current coaches, Ian Robinson or myself for further information.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Following the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) confirmation last week of the teams taking part in the competition, Birmingham 2022 has unveiled the full match schedule for the men’s and women’s tournaments. Both the women’s and the men’s competitions will begin on Friday 29 July, with the opening session of the women’s tournament featuring reigning champions New Zealand against Kenya and South Africa playing Scotland. Hosts, England, will face Ghana in the first match of the men’s competition with New Zealand facing Scotland in the same session. There will be a home nations clash on 31 July, when England’s men’s team takes on Wales and both England teams, who each won bronze medals on the Gold Coast in 2018, will be taking on India in the group stages, with the men’s team facing them on 1 August and the England women’s match against India taking place the following day. The men’s reigning champions, Australia, will take on Scotland in their opening match and will then face New Zealand on 1 August - a repeat of the Gold Coast 2018 men’s hockey final. The final of the women’s event will be held on Sunday 7 August and will be part of a super Sunday for women’s sport at the Games, with the final of the netball tournament and the final of the first ever Commonwealth Games women’s cricket T20 tournament being held on the same day.

The men’s final will be played on Monday 8 August, just a few hours before the Closing Ceremony. There will be 54 hockey matches in total, with 40 group games, six classification matches, four semi-finals, four medal matches and all of these matches will be played at the University of a Birmingham, the official competition venue for hockey at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
