Welcome Back

I have seen the club grow and it is lovely to see the club romances grow and now their children are playing alongside their parents or even higher. It really is one big happy family which is why so many players join and never leave and if they do, they will come back at some time.

For those that do not know me, I have been playing and socializing at the club for nearly 40 years and have made some great friends for life. I am married to Jim (who is a Watford supporter) and has always supported me with my love of the sport. We had a new addition to the family last September and no doubt at some stage you will all meet Bayley the cocker spaniel, as Bayley does likes to support as well.

Welcome to the 2022/23 Season!

A message from your Chairwomen Linda McCormack

The Ladies had a great season with the 1’s winning promotion, the 2s mid table and the 3s a comfortable 4th. The 3s were offered promotion but it was agreed that they wanted another season at this level, and of course would sooner go up as winners. The Men also had a good season but did have a lot of injuries in the second half of the season. The 1s finished mid table, the 2’s were pipped at the last minute and came second, but I am pleased to announce they have now been offered promotion and have taken it. 3s were a comfortable 4th , the, 4s 10th, and the 5s played most weeks with the help from some players doubling up.

Last season the adult section played in the newly structured League and both the men and women joined the South-Central league. A lot of effort was taken into consideration and the pro and cons as to which area to join, as Staines were on the edge of three areas. I feel as a club we made the correct decision and despite maybe a bit more mileage, hopefully the facilities at the away clubs have been better and players are not having to change in a toilet! We have some great youngsters coming through, playing in the adult sections, becoming valued members of the team, along with some very supportive parents on the side line who turn out in all weathers. We look forward to seeing the new stars of this season.

I would like to thank all the valued members of the committee, who often go above and beyond despite all being volunteers, the Coaches, Umpires and off course the supporters. Even if you are not playing hockey, you are all part of what makes our club great. If you can spare anytime to help out with anything no matter how limited, then please reach out to me for a chat. Here’s looking to some great hockey this season and maybe some more promotions.

Linda

Staines HC: My hockey journey

Hi, I'm Issy, I joined Staines HC in 2018. I currently play both colts and ladies hockey, I am a volunteer coach and a newbie umpire.

Hockey is something that I am really passionate about and is my favourite thing to do outside of school. Going to training and playing matches every weekend keeps my head on straight! I study better when I have had a good run around the pitch, exercise is a key part of my mental health - a welcoming, friendly club like Staines HC is a great place to let off some steam and spend time with friends. I moved from another club to join Staines HC, it was a great decision as I have learnt SO much at Staines HC and I enjoy the game more and more each season. Hockey has created many opportunities for me, including trying out for the England Development team for my age group, gaining experience coaching the younger children and meeting some of my closest friends in the club.

I began volunteer coaching in August 2020 when asked if I could help the coaches at the summer camp. I loved making session drills that I thought I would enjoy myself, and having the rewarding feeling of watching the younger children grow and develop. I currently help coach U8s every Wednesday evening before my own training session, so if you see a rather dishevelled teen with a whistle - that’s me!

Whilst I’m here I must mention that I also help run the Staines HC Instagram accounts for both our juniors and adults. We post information about important events, changes to training sessions and everything in between, so please make sure you give us a follow: @staineshc & @staineshcjuniors!

Moving amongst some of the youngest and the older ;-) players at the club, I can tell you honestly that Staines HC is an inclusive, friendly and positive place to play sport, be sociable and become part of a community.

I am a couple months off of turning 16, so I cannot wait to do my England Hockey coaching course, and then become an official coach!! Voluntary coaching has been such an enjoyable journey already, and I feel that after every session I get to know myself, the game, and the children better. Seeing them grow and move into older age groups has been so much fun.

I also mentioned that I have started umpiring. I completed my ‘Level 1, unassessed’ over Zoom at the start of this year, which was very easy to do. Anyone thinking about doing this, I would encourage you to do so. On the course they mentioned how England Hockey are short of young umpires throughout England. I believe I will be getting assessed some time at the beginning of the new season and then I can start umpiring some junior games!

England Hockey and Hockey Wales are bidding to host the 2026 Men’s World Cup.

As always at multi-sport events, the hockey attracted big crowds, with the largest, noisiest and happiest being the full stadium that cheered England women home to victory on Sunday 7 August.

England men secured bronze in a frenetic and sometimes chaotic bronze medal against South Africa. Both teams had been involved in gruelling semi-final matches and it showed as the play sometimes descended into a series of turnovers as both sets of players showed exhaustion.

Australia men continued their unbeaten record at the Commonwealth Games with a quite magnificent 7-0 win over India in the final.

Commonwealth Games review:

The bronze medal matches saw India women win their first Commonwealth Games medal since 2006 when they beat New Zealand in a shoot-out after the game finished 1-1. Savita was quite outstanding as she saved four of the New Zealand shoot-out attempts.

First title for England women and Australia make it magnificent seven

The final of the women’s competition was fast and furious but the three factors that secured victory for England were the two supremely well taken goals from Holly Hunt and Tess Howard; the outstanding defensive discipline of Hollie Pearne-Webb, Anna Toman and Giselle Ansley; and the agility and awareness of goalkeeper Maddie Hinch.

The Commonwealth Games hockey competitions were played at the University of Birmingham with the backdrop of the city and the landmark Old Joe - the world’s tallest free-standing clock tower.

The previous day England women had created their own piece of history with a first gold medal as they played some very attractive attacking hockey to beat Australia 2-1.
