What were the hot topics in the St. Albert Leader in 2012? As part of our 2012 Year in Review, we generated a word cloud using the text in our review stories. Excluding common words like “the and “a, the cloud shows that “St. Albert was far and away the most-used word, followed closely by ones like “time, “city, “home, “more and “year. January was highlighted by the race for the Progressive Conservative nomination in the provincial riding of St. Albert. Although six people had stated their intentions to run for the nomination — formerly held by Ken Allred — only three filed their nomination papers on time: Jacquie Hansen, Stephen Khan and Jeff Wedman. One hopeful, Sleight Anstruther, missed filing his papers by mere minutes. The other two, Kent La Rose and Mark Cassidy, reconsidered their initial commitments. The three candidates who filed on time squared off in a forum at the St. Albert Inn and Suites later in the month that focused on hard work, local values and giving St. Albert a strong voice at the provincial table.

A local father pulled his daughter out of W.D. Cuts Junior High School in January when a teacher accused of showing a raunchy YouTube video on sexual discrimination to Grade 7 students returned to the classroom. Officials with St. Albert Protestant Schools said the teacher was reprimanded after the incident, but that wasn’t enough for Steve Claussen, who yanked his 11-yearold daughter out of the teacher’s class and promised to move her to another school. “I don’t like removing my daughter and disrupting her education. But she doesn’t feel comfortable walking down the hall and seeing him, Claussen told Sun Media News Services. Claussen also met with a lawyer to pursue legal action and filed a complaint with the Alberta Teachers’ Association.

The race to replace Ken Allred as the Progressive Conservative party nominee in the provincial riding of St. Albert was won by Stephen Khan in February. Khan, a local businessman, defeated Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools trustee Jacquie Hansen and former Canadian Forces helicopter pilot Jeff Wedman to win the PC nomination. Just under 1,000 votes were cast in the election, which took place at the St. Albert Inn and Suites. “We were thrilled, but there’s also a deep sense of honour to be able to represent the constituency, The City of St. Albert was gearing up for a year of aggressive action on economic development, infrastructure, long-term planning and several other areas, Mayor Nolan Crouse told a packed house at the Enjoy Centre in February. Almost 300 people came out to the Moonflower Room at the Enjoy Centre to hear the mayor deliver his annual state of the city address, during which he touched on four main topics: economic development, the
environmental, social welfare and safety. On the last of those topics, Crouse said enforcement may seem overzealous in St. Albert, but it is paying off. “I know people take a lot of shots at me over photo radar, but I want to reinforce that this why we are asking people to slow down, he said, noting that St. Albert had gone all of 2010 and 2011 without a traffic fatality. He also touted the imminent opening of 300 hectares of undeveloped non-residential land, but noted there was a lot of work to do before development could go ahead. “We need to create an environment where we have willing landowners who are willing to create and increase the number of serviced lots, he said.

Nolan Crouse already held the top job in St. Albert, but was chosen for an even bigger role in February. Crouse was elected chair of the Capital Region Board on Feb. 16, beating out two other area mayors for a one-year term that started April 1. “I felt that I had the energy, the time and the interest in doing it,â€? he said. “It’s extremely complicated, and I looked at it as extremely challenging; it’s going to be one of the more difficult assignments you can have. But I think most of us want something that’s challenging, and this is about as challenging as you can get. “I’m pretty level-headed; I’m not worried about it and I’m not excited about it. A night that had been set up to be dramatic and historic instead turned out to be somewhat anticlimactic as the Progressive Conservatives easily won both St. Albert ridings en route to a majority government in the April 23 provincial election. In the riding of St. Albert — where many expected the Tories to be in for a close fight to hang onto the seat — PC candidate Stephen Khan easily outpaced his competition, gathering nearly 10,500 votes, or 53.8 per cent, while his closest competitor, Wildrose candidate James Burrows, only mustered 4,130, or 21.2 per cent. When the checkmark appeared next to his photo just before 9 p.m. and he was declared the winner of the riding, Khan said the first thoughts through his mind were of the community that had just elected him.
“I was really happy for St. Albert. It’s an affirmation for St. Albert, the vision people have for our city and for our province,” said Khan, who replaced outgoing PC MLA Ken Allred. “And I was so incredibly happy for my team and the people who worked so hard to make this happen. It’s a remarkable victory for them, and it’s their victory every bit as much as it is mine.” Meanwhile, in the Spruce GroveSt. Albert riding, deputy premier Doug Horner cruised to his fourth term in office, gathering more than 55 per cent of the vote. Television news networks declared him the winner of the riding a mere 45 minutes after the polls closed at 8 p.m. “I’m very humbled at the support that I got,” Horner said. “When you look at some of the polls, and you figure those polls are correct, then we might be in a bit of trouble. But we came through at around 58 per cent of the vote, and 60 seats in terms of the provincial side of it, and that’s pretty rewarding. I feel good about that.”

It was first time lucky for Chloe Fulton. Fulton, a 13-year-old student at Vincent J. Maloney Junior High School, claimed the title of Miss Teen St. Albert-World at the Alberta regional finals of the Miss Teen Canada-World competition in Calgary in mid-March. What’s more impressive, though, is that this was the first time she had ever entered a beauty pageant. “I was pretty happy when they said there was no experience necessary,” laughed Fulton, who also went to the Miss Teen CanadaWorld pageant in July in Toronto. Aside from the trip to Toronto and the chance to earn the national title, Fulton said being Miss Teen St. Albert-World means much more to her. “It means I’m a role model for everyone in St. Albert. They can look up to me, and if they need help with anything, they can talk to me,” she said. “I’m really honoured to represent my city, and I hope to get more involved in the community.”

The Alberta Junior Hockey League approved the relocation of the St. Albert Steel to Whitecourt for the 2012-2013 season in May. The league’s board of governors met in Red Deer and unanimously approved the relocation request that was submitted by Steel owner/general manager/head coach Greg Parks. AJHL president Craig T. Mayor Nolan Crouse — who presented St. Albert’s case to the relocation committee on April 6 — said in a written statement provided to media and to fellow city councillors that he was “truly saddened by the decision. “I am disappointed, and yet we were powerless, unless of course Council would have coughed up $125,000 per year as per their request, Residents in the Grandin subdivision were breathing a little easier in June as it appeared a wolverine that was in the area had moved on. Rumours of the wolverine’s presence started floating around the neighbourhood in early May, and both local and provincial officials confirmed in June that it was indeed one of the notoriously vicious animals in the area. “There was a wolverine spotted in Grandin back at the beginning of May, so it’s been quite some time, said City of St. Albert municipal enforcement officer Garnet Melnyk. “Obviously we’re not the subject matter experts, so Alberta Fish and Wildlife was contacted, so they went out to the resident that called and confirmed [it]. It’s business as usual at St. Albert Youth Community Centre in June — at least for the time being. Dubstep artist Skrillex and the rest of the Full Flex Express Tour didn’t make a scheduled stop in St. Albert after all. Promoters of the concert — which was supposed to take place on Friday, July 20, at the St. Albert Kinsmen rodeo grounds — issued a press release in June saying that the City of St. Albert had denied them the necessary permits to hold the concert in the city and they would be looking at venues elsewhere in Edmonton. City recreation director Monique St. Louis said it all boiled down to safety and security at the no-minors show. “As we looked at it, we realized we didn’t have the policing resources to effectively support an event like this, she said. “They told us they’d need 37 RCMP — that is 75 per cent of our workforce. And with that short notice, we just couldn’t muster those kind of resources. She added that, although the Rainmaker Rodeo and Exhibition holds comparable concerts every year as part of their festivities, the City has much more time to prepare for those.

Almost 47 years to the day he was first elected mayor of St. Albert, the community learned that Richard Fowler had passed away in July. Fowler contracted pneumonia in fall 2011, and never fully recovered from that. He passed away around 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 8. Mayor Nolan Crouse was friends with Fowler and his wife Dawne, having just visited them with his wife Gwen on Saturday, June 30. Crouse said that Fowler set the bar high for mayors who came after him. “He had this approach, this wisdom, this confidence about him ‌ He always had a perspective on things that always seemed wise,â€? It’s just about unanimous — life is good in St. Albert. Ahead of a presentation at a July city council meeting, the City of St. Albert released the results of their 2012 Community Satisfaction Survey on their website, with 99 per cent of residents surveyed saying that the quality of life in the city is either good (37 per cent) or very good (62 per cent). For 2012, the City added a new question, asking respondents how they felt their quality of life has changed over the past three years. Seventy-one per cent of respondents said it has stayed the same, while 14 per cent said it had improved and 13 per cent said it had declined. Also new this year, residents were asked how satisfied they were with the way the City is being run. In general:

Depending on whose numbers you believe, the population of St. Albert may be shrinking. Ahead of a city council meeting in July, the City of St. Albert released the results of the 2012 civic census, which pegged the city’s population at 60,994 — down from the 2011 federal census figure of 61,466. City officials noted in the report accompanying the civic census figures that they are reviewing the difference with the federal government, and it might be accounted for through differences in accounting and methodology. The city’s population according to the 2010 civic census was 60,138.

s 2012 drew to a close and the calendar flipped over to 2013, it was kind of fun to look back in the year to put together the St. Albert Leader’s Year in Review edition, which we hope will become an annual tradition for us. There were plenty of stories that we Yp >c\ee :ffb had forgot had happened, where we said to ourselves as we read it, “Oh yeah! That story!” There were that seemed like they have been dragging on a lot longer than they actually have been. But, fun as it is to look back at 2012, it’s more fun to look ahead at 2013. It promises to be an interesting year, with a municipal election on the horizon, which always brings about a lot of passion and emotion. This year’s election may bring about more than usual, though, given the uproar in some circles lately over property tax increases and unpopular decisions made over the last three years like the City-run Starbucks in Servus Credit Union Place or the new solid waste system. Even though such projects may prove themselves to be successes over time, grudges tend to be held for a long time, and are likely to crop up again when voters head to the polls. Meanwhile, a source of optimism heading into the new year is the economic development St. Albert is poised to see in 2013. City of St. Albert officials are bullish on the prospects of new commercial and industrial development coming in the next year, some of which is evident already, with construction of a commercial centre underway along St. Albert Trail north of Riverside Honda, and developers raring to go on a Costco site on the north side of town, not to mention more than 500 new rental units being added in a short time. It would be prudent, however, for those hopes not to get too high, though. It was at least five years ago that the owners of Grandin Park Plaza promised the redevelopment of that site, and to date, no significant work has happened there. Still, when we look back in another 12 months, 2013 will likely be one of the most interesting years St. Albert has ever seen.

s a New Year is upon us, it is appropriate to reflect on the year that was and contemplate the political year that lies ahead. Undoubtedly, the economy and fiscal matters will dominate the political headlines in 2013. However, I predict that in mid-January, when the National Hockey League cancels the entirety of the 2012-2013 hockey season, the local MP will lead an impressive social media and public relations campaign to have the Stanley Cup awarded to the best amateur ice hockey team in Canada. The outcome and success of this campaign will be a nailbiter and will go seven games, possibly overtime! On Feb. 7, the House of Commons will entertain second reading of Bill C-461: The CBC and Public Service

All governments will continue to struggle to get their fiscal houses in order. Unserviceable debt in several European countries and excessive debt in the United States will continue to threaten Canada’s economic recovery, as our customers continue to consume less of our exports.

Notwithstanding the danger that debt represents, domestic governments will continue to spend more than they raise. Canadians will question the affordability of stealth fighter jets and eventually learn that a reduction in the growth of spending is not the same thing as an actual cut. Albertans will be resigned to the fact that once again we are in debt and will not be fooled by the accounting shell game of operating vs. capital debt. Although there is only one pool of money, it won’t be until the province concedes an operating deficit that Albertans will believe what the government knew all along. There will be an election in B.C. this spring; the Northern Gateway Pipeline’s future will be front and center. However, the fate of the much needed access to Asian markets

There will be a major federal cabinet shuffle in the summer; the Member of Parliament for Edmonton-St. Albert will not change seats (as he is already in the last row!). There will be municipal elections in the fall. Nolan Crouse will easily be re-elected. Throughout the campaign, all candidates will emphatically promote an 80-20 tax split and then do nothing to achieve it. All in all, St. Albert, Alberta and Canada will end 2013 much as they began it — in debt, with inefficient and bloated bureaucracies spending too much money; but still the best places in the world to live, work and raise a family! Officials with St. Albert Fire Services blamed a citronella candle for starting a massive fire in North Ridge that destroyed one house and damaged two others. Fire crews were called to 76 Normandeau Cres. at about 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, as the fire was spreading from the candle up the wall and the homeowner was unable to contain it on her own. “Right at the entranceway, they had a candle, one of those citrus candles going,” said St. Albert Fire Services chief Ray Richards. “Apparently, it was the ignition source. We’re just not sure yet how it went up.” The family — including a husband, wife and three-year-old child — all got out of the house safely. Richards estimated that, between the three houses, the damage estimate was somewhere between $750,000 and $1 million.

A St. Albert family appealed for potential bone marrow donors to come forward and get tested in August — not only to find a match for their own daughter, but for others who are suffering as well. Earlier this summer, five-yearold Halle Popowich was diagnosed with a rare form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and without a bone marrow transplant, doctors have pegged her chances of survival at between five and 20 per cent. After four weeks without finding a match, dad Kurt and mom Deana appealed for people to get
tested, even if they don’t wind up being a match for Halle. “It’s not just about Halle,” Deana said. “We feel happy that we can use her story to help so many other people. We’ve met so many other parents and families at the Stollery [Children’s Hospital], and everyone has a story.” A match was found, though, and Halle had a bone marrow transplant in November in Calgary, which has boosted her chances of survival to nearly 60 per cent.

The Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert was spared from the chopping block by city council in August. A largely pro-AHF gallery watched as councillors voted 6-1 to have the City of St. Albert renegotiate the existing stewardship agreement between the two sides — with necessary revisions — for a period of five years. “If a third-party can deliver the services of a municipality, we should allow that to happen. And until they have proven otherwise, they should be allowed to continue. And I have not seen any proof otherwise that the Arts and Heritage Foundation have not kept to the agreement they have in front of them,” Coun. Cathy Heron said. “That’s not saying revisions are not entirely necessary … but until we really sit down around a negotiating table and hammer that out, why are we talking about other options?” Negotiations between the two sides continue.

When the most important goal in Canadian soccer history was
scored, Erin McLeod was trying not to get her hopes up too high. The St. Albert-born goalkeeper for the Canadian national women’s soccer team was patrolling the other end of the pitch at City of Coventry Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 9, when midfielder Diana Matheson slotted home the stoppage-time goal that ultimately gave Canada a 1-0 win over France and the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. But, with the memory of a stoppage-time winner scored against Canada in their semifinal against the United States just three days earlier, McLeod was determined not to get ahead of herself. “I’m a typical goalkeeper; I was organizing my defenders for a counterattack when we scored,” said McLeod, who was selected player of the match in the bronzemedal game. “I remembered the U.S. game, when they put up the three minutes [of stoppage time] and with 30 seconds left, they scored. So when we scored, I made sure not to get too excited about anything and hold my own until the seconds ran out.” And when they did, Canada earned the bronze, an accomplishment that still hadn’t quite sunk in as of the following Sunday afternoon, just before the closing ceremonies. “There are moments where we kind of get teary-eyed, and there are moments when we reflect together as a team,” she said. “The coolest thing has been the village; it’s a land of Olympians. And they’re the most excited; many watched our game against the U.S. and were completely amazed, thought it was an awesome game.”
Sweeping changes are coming to St. Albert’s animal bylaw, but rules regulating cats won’t be among them. At a regular meeting in September, city council approved a number of guiding principles for City of St. Albert staff as they complete the first major overhaul of the animal bylaw in over 20 years. But, even though writing in rules requiring cat licenses and against roaming cats was debated at length, the idea was eventually voted down, mainly due to cost. Another of the more contentious issues that was discussed was adding a provision to the animal bylaw that would require dogs to be on a leash at all times, except when it is in an identified dog park or an uninhabited open field, like a farm. Council also narrowly approved an addition to the bylaw that would require owners to carry a means of picking up waste with them while walking their dogs. Council also voted to add provisions to the bylaw that would prohibit certain other animals from being kept on private property, including pigs, sheep, goats, pigeons and chickens, as well as a late payment fee for dog licences, and higher fees for dogs who are deemed dangerous due to a history of biting or other bad behaviour.

Get ready, St. Albert businesses — there’s a mob of customers eager to spend money headed your way. The deck was shuffled among several City of St. Albert departments in September. City manager Patrick Draper announced the organizational realignments, which affected five City departments effective Monday, Sept. 10. The planning and development department and the engineering department have been combined into the new planning and engineering division, which are headed up by general manager Curtis Cundy. Meanwhile, St. Albert Transit and the City’s public works department have been combined into the new infrastructure services division. That division is headed up by general manager Glenn Tompolski, formerly the director of public works. The City’s office of the environment has also been moved out of the planning and engineering division and will now report directly to the city manager.

Brent Rathgeber continued his fight for more transparency at the CBC with a private member’s bill tabled in October. The Edmonton-St. Albert Conservative MP garnered national media attention last year when he made several requests under the federal Access to Information Act to have the salaries of CBC personalities like George Stroumboulopoulos, Peter Mansbridge and Rick Mercer made public — requests that were flatly denied under section 68.1 of the act, which states that it does not apply to any CBC information “that relates to its journalistic, creative or programming activities, other than information that relates to its general administration.” Now, Rathgeber wants to amend that section, putting the onus on the CBC to prove to the federal information commissioner that releasing information would prejudice those journalistic, creative or programming activities in order for the exclusion to apply.

Corissa Tymafichuk, a Grade 10 student at Paul Kane High School, attended a We Day event last year in Vancouver, and said it was an “amazing experience” that she couldn’t wait to do all over again. “My favourite thing about it last year was the whole stadium filled with people around my age who wanted to change the world,” she said. “It was really inspiring.” We Day in Calgary featured speakers like Larry King, Rick Hansen and Martin Sheen, and musical performances by Hedley, Shawn Desman and Lights.

A St. Albert family was left with more questions than answers after the findings of a fatality inquiry into their daughter’s death were released to the public in November. Samantha Martin died on Dec. 3, 2006, at the age of 13, coping with a rare genetic disorder called Tetrasomy 18p all her life. But the inquiry could not definitively determine whether seizures caused by that disorder, the care Samantha received in a foster home, or another factor was the ultimate cause of her death. “I find that the manner of death was natural, and that the cause of death may well have been a seizure, but due to the absence of evidence, it is not possible to say that this was the probable cause of death,” wrote Judge Marilena Carminati in the fatality inquiry report.

It was an emotional day in November for eight families who received the keys to their new Habitat for Humanity homes in St. Albert, but perhaps more emotional for
one of the people chosen to hand over keys. With families taking possession of the first eight units completed in the Aurora Place, Habitat for Humanity Edmonton celebrated its 200th home in the Capital Region. Presenting the keys to that 200th home was Sean Taylor, son of Suzanne Kristie, a previously anonymous donor who had donated $100,000 a year to the organization for many years before her passing in fall 2011. “Our mom treated her wealth as a gift, and what was really important to her was to give back. And she did this in a very incredible way,” said Taylor, who had to choke back tears a couple of times during his speech. “The honour of presenting the 200th key in her name is more than words can describe,” he added. “It is a very fitting tribute to her. We are so proud of our mom and all the work she did so privately to support many charities.” Other key presenters included Habitat for Humanity Edmonton founder Dr. Dave Hubert and Robert Rundle Elementary School student Cameron Cockrall, who was selected out of more than 8,000 participants in PJ Day in St. Albert schools on Wednesday, Nov. 14. president and CEO Alfred Nikolai said that hitting the 200-home milestone is “huge.” “We’re excited for the eight families that received their keys today, but we’re also excited to know that the Habitat for Humanity model works,” he said. “It works because, the more homes we build, the more homes we can build.” Twelve more families received keys to their new homes at a ceremony on Dec. 20.

A local family was recognized by the City of St. Albert for how much they have given back. To mark National Philanthropy Day on Nov. 16, the City announced that the Hutchinson family — Ralph, Janet, Tally, Casey and Dallas — were the winners of the annual St. Albert Philanthropy Award, which recognizes generosity in terms of direct financial support as well as community spirit. “It’s a great honour,” Tally said. “We’re extremely humbled by this.” Tally added that they don’t do charitable work for the recognition, so the award was a surprise. “Our parents have worked hard over the years, and it’s something they’ve instilled in us,” he said. “We’ve carried on those

The ongoing negotiations between the City of St. Albert and the Arts and Heritage Foundation over a new partnership agreement claimed their first casualty in December. The AHF board of trustees announced that executive director Paul Moulton would be resigning his post effective Dec. 31, and Moulton said in an interview the following day that the decision stemmed directly from the negotiations. “It’s been in my mind for some time that we were having fundamental challenges with the new agreement with the City,” he said. “What spurred the decision was the motion that they made after their in camera session Monday night. … That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.” St. Albert city council unanimously approved a motion at their Dec. 3 meeting stating their support for city manager Patrick Draper approving a draft agreement from Nov. 15 — based on management oversight, accountability, financial reporting, collaboration, transparency, open communications and no duplication of services — and giving Draper until Jan. 14, 2013, to get the AHF to sign off on it.

Infantile and insipid? Inspired and ingenious? All of the above? Whatever you think of Family Guy, 2012 marked a breakthrough for the 39-yearold mastermind of Quahog — so much so in fact that he tops our list of the year’s 10 most influential entertainers. In addition to overseeing the misadventures of the loutish Griffin clan — as well as producing two other animated shows, The Cleveland Show and American Dad — MacFarlane nabbed a Grammy nomination for his 2011 album Music Is Better Than Words, hosted Saturday Night Live and made a little movie called Ted. All of this has made MacFarlane a household name in his own right — no small feat for the guy behind the drawing board of a TV cartoon. (I confess I spent a portion of my childhood believing Hanna Barbera was the woman who created The Flintstones.) And MacFarlane is not letting up. While a reboot of The Flintstones — a labour of love for MacFarlane — has been back-burnered, he is developing Cosmos, a new version of the Carl Sagan science series that shows
MarFarlane has more on his mind than just non sequiturs about bodily functions. On the big screen, plans continue for a Family Guy movie a la The Simpsons. Before that, though, he will direct and star in a western that one suspects will owe more to Blazing Saddles than Unforgiven.
)% AFJJ N?<;FE The miracle of The Avengers isn’t that it’s a great film — the miracle is that it isn’t a terrible one. For that, writer-director Whedon deserves full credit for tackling a near-impossible scenario and delivering a clever, cool superhero mash-up that satisfied comic nerds and casual moviegoers alike. (For fans of Whedon — who have been loyally following his career from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Firefly — this breakthrough was hugely gratifying too.) Naturally, this titanic level of commercial success doesn’t go unrewarded and Whedon’s new contract with Marvel will see him produce both a new SHIELD television series as well as direct The Avengers 2 (due in 2015). More amusingly, however, is that his immediate follow-up wasn’t based on the works of Stan Lee, but rather, Shakespeare: a micro-budgeted retelling of Much Ado About Nothing that made the festival circuit rounds this past fall.
flashed photographers on a recent red carpet, Hathaway did just fine in 2012 with her knickers on. First, she nicely filled out her catsuit in The Dark Knight Rises — proving a worthy successor to Michelle Pfeiffer — and is all but assured an Academy Award nomination for her belt-it-out Les Miserables performance. PreOscar memo to Hathaway: underwear isn’t optional. +% :?8EE@E> K8KLD Speaking of knickers or a lack thereof, former male stripper Tatum turned up in no less than four films in 2012: Magic Mike (which he conceived and produced), Haywire (classing it up as part of an ensemble for Steven Soderbergh), The
Vow (one for the ladies) and 21 Jump Street (which delighted in mocking Tatum’s own image as a dim dreamboat). One telling sign of Tatum’s cemented stardom: while the sequel to G.I. Joe reportedly killed him off before it was delayed, a new post-reshoots trailer appears to indicate Tatum’s role has been expanded and his demise overturned.

This must be a sign of something good. Tasked with identifying my Top 10 TV shows of 2012, I had a hard time narrowing it down. These lists are tricky to put together. I always feel a responsibility to balance my personal eye with my critical eye. It’s a bit tough to evaluate network shows that still run on the old fall-to-spring schedule. That means taking into account the last half of last season, and the first half of the current season, if we’re talking about the calendar year 2012. Weighing all those factors, and occasionally just ignoring the facts and going with my gut, here are my top 10 TV shows of 2012 (SPOILER ALERT: In some cases, up-to-date plot points are discussed): ,% K?< N8CB@E> ;<8; In the spectre of supernatural creatures,
zombies always have been on the low end. Not too swift, either mentally or physically. They normally would be the low-paid labourers of the monster world. But this series has done something that previously seemed impossible: It has made zombies cool. And another major accomplishment is that sometimes with genre shows such as this, there’s the initial blast of excitement, and nothing else that follows quite measures up (could Game of Thrones be headed down that road?). I’d argue, though, that every season of The Walking Dead actually has been better than the last.
+% 9F8I;N8CB <DG@I< With the unexpected and shocking death of James Darmody (Michael Pitt) at the end of Season 2, anybody could have been forgiven for wondering if this series could hold up in Season 3. But I have to say, Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale) was one of the most terrifying TV characters I’ve ever seen. Whether or not you’re buying your
booze directly (or indirectly) from Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson, raise a glass to the continued excellence of this underrated series.
*% 8D<I@:8E ?FIIFI JKFIP I honestly can say that I never have seen a show like this before. It takes every horror-thriller fear you’ve ever had and smashes them together in a way that is uncomfortably but entertainingly terrifying. Season 1 was more spooky; season two is more disturbing. But Jessica Lange has been stunning both times, in different roles, even if she told me recently that she doesn’t really consider her characters to be “creepy.” )% ;FNEKFE 899<P I remember the argument I used to hear in the best seasons of Mad Men. Non-fans would lament, “Nothing happens.” I used to argue, “My God, if you’re really paying attention, more happens in a single scene of Mad Men that occurs in entire seasons of
other shows.” And now I can say the same thing about Downton Abbey. Some people say that straight-forward good acting and good writing just doesn’t cut it any more, that you need to trick things up to grab an audience’s attention. The fact that this series has become something of a pop-culture sensation — in North America, of all places! — proves those people wrong. (% M<<G Nerds aren’t going to like this choice, I realize. There aren’t any zombies or superheroes or dudes with funny ears running around. But I appeal to a different kind of nerd. A political nerd. A comedy nerd. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won an Emmy for her portrayal of U.S. vice-president Selina Meyer in this series, and it was richly deserved. So clever, so sharp, insider-ish in a way that invites you in rather than keeping you out, this series had me in stitches for its entire run. If only real politics could be this much fun.

So many fabulous feuds, so little time! The usual suspects and the usual targets were involved in the usual spats this year, with Kim Kardashian getting verbally kicked around by Jon Hamm and Jason Statham, among others, Elton John putting the boots into Madonna and all manner of people happy to weigh in on how much they don’t like Chris Brown. There were cat fights on American Idol, former and current wives duking it out on TV, bar scuffles over Rihanna and fisticuffs at Halle Berry’s house. Comic Jenny Johnson once tweeted “Call me old fashioned, but Chris Brown should be in prison,” as a response to Brown beating Rihanna, and that got retweeted umpteen times. Brown responded with a string of crude tweets about Johnson. You could look it up. Likewise, singer Miranda Lambert took to Twitter to question why Brown was allowed to perform at the Grammy Awards this year, given his status as an abuser. And the beat goes on. +% IF9 B8I;8J?@8E Xe[ I@K8 FI8 Boy meets girl singer, boy loses girl singer, boy tweets disparaging comments about girl singer’s morals. Nixing the penny poses a hefty price to taxpayers, according to new figures released last month by the federal finance department. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty signalled the feds would move to abolish the coin in its spring budget — a measure the government says will save about $11 million annually in production costs. But data released by the finance department suggests taxpayers will be paying to eliminate pennies for years to come. A recent analysis indicates the present net cost estimated at redeeming the penny is $38.3 million. Costs linked to eliminating the coin include $53.3 million to pay face value for redeemed pennies, and operational costs linked to the program of $27.4 million. Recycling coin metals, particularly zinc and copper from melted pennies, will bring in about $42.5 million in revenue. It is estimated six billion pennies will be traded in by financial institutions and consumers.

Canada’s finance minister warned against shifting into high gear and accusing General Motors of axing 1,000 jobs in Oshawa, Ont., to ship Camaro production to Michigan. In an exclusive interview with Sun Media national bureau chief David Akin, Jim Flaherty said, “People should take pause on this. The giant automaker has fulfilled its commitments with Ottawa and Ontario to maintain Oshawa jobs, the Whitby-Oshawa MP told Akin. Citing a need to consolidate rear-wheel drive production in one plant, GM announced Wednesday it would end production of the Camaro in Oshawa and start building the next-generation version in Lansing Grand River, Mich., in 2015. The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) branded the announcement a “betrayal
of GM’s 2006, 2008 and 2009 agreement to maintain the two local plants in exchange for concessions — predicting cuts of 25 per cent to 30 per cent of Oshawa’s 4,000 workers, with 9,000 employees at related supply also facing uncertain futures. The federal and Ontario governments helped bail out GM with more than $10 billion, leaving Ottawa and Queen’s Park sharing ownership of about nine per cent of its common shares in return for production guarantees. “I haven’t seen any evidence yet of any potential job loss, Flaherty told Akin, adding he spoke with GM’s chairman and its Canadian representative. “As long as they keep their word, it was a good investment by Canadian taxpayers — and so far, they are keeping their word. The Camaro shutdown will hit Oshawa’s flex plant, where 100,000 have been built annually since the brand was revived in 2009, CAW national president Ken Lewenza said. In Oshawa, which had 23,000
workers in 2013, Lewenza said he called on Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Premier Dalton McGuinty to lobby GM to keep the surviving workforce. He said a senior company official told him the decision was made two weeks before Michigan’s governor signed legislation last week that stops requiring union workers to pay dues. New U.S. auto industry employees earn less than Canadian counterparts. Ontario Minister of Economic Development and Innovation Brad Duguid vowed to hold GM “accountable to fulfil its end of the bailout bargain. “Given our partnership with GM, we expected a greater level of commitment to Ontario and to Ontario autoworkers, he stated. “We expect GM to move quickly to bring new product mandates to the facility and also stand by its commitment to add a third shift on the Oshawa flex line, creating 900 jobs. “GM has assured us that they will comply.

@] pfl nXek kf ^\k X_\X[# ^\k X d\ekfi JLE D<;@8 E<NJ J<IM@:<J Æ Denise Morrison says early-career guidance from the right mentor made her who she is today: the chief executive officer of Campbell Soup Co. In the 1980s, Morrison was a director of sales planning for the U.S. arm of food company Nestle SA. Her work ethic and performance in the White Plains, N.Y., office caught the eye of President C. Alan MacDonald. MacDonald would check in with Morrison, make himself available for questions and even ask her about customer feedback. Before long, he had recommended her for a promotion to business director. “That was a defining moment,” says Morrison, who is now so dedicated to mentoring that she spends as much as 20 per cent of her time advising and supporting others. Although few people have the company president as a personal advocate, Morrison’s experience demonstrates how valuable mentors can be. Mentors can help you navigate sticky office politics, teach new skills or even put your name forward when new positions arise. In a modern twist, mentors are also relying on their protégés. Older employees often depend on younger staff for technology guidance. As employment security wanes, laid-off bosses may need to turn to former subordinates for job leads. So the relationship may be more symbiotic and less paternalistic than in the past. Also new is the role of social media, which encourages workers of all seniority levels to advise each other, at all hours. “The role of the mentor has continued to evolve,” says Julie Nugent, senior director
at Catalyst Inc, a nonprofit research and advisory group focused on advancing women in business. One-on-one mentoring was named the second-mosteffective career development program for employees below director level, after “traditional training,” according to a 2012 survey of 320 human resources professionals by talent development consulting firm Insala. But only one in five companies offer formal mentoring programs, according to a 2012 Society for Human Resources Management poll of about 550 human resources professionals.
ÈG\fgc\ e\\[ kf Y\ `e Z_Xi^\ f] k_\`i [\m\cfgd\ek gcXe%É ;\e`j\ Dfii`jfe :<F# :XdgY\cc Jflg :f% That means you are probably on your own when it comes to getting the right mentor. Forget the idea that one adviser can do all things. Identify different mentors for different needs. Do you need help using your company’s technology? How about someone to coach you through a challenging relationship with your boss? What about a mentor who can find opportunities for you at other companies? To build what Morrison calls a “personal advisory board,” check your university alumni groups for possible mentors. Ask someone you respect — inside or outside your company — to meet for coffee. Use social technology to post work-related questions and find the most knowledgeable people. Next, identify a “sponsor.” This is usually a more senior executive who can use his or
her influence to advance you for promotions. How do you get a sponsor? Some companies offer programs. Citi, for one, matched 62 women managing directors with advocates in 2009. Within 18 months, 22 per cent had expanded roles, and 15 per cent were promoted. If your company does not help, reach out to senior executives yourself. Send them an email, or ask them to meet with you for 10 minutes. Feeling awkward? Get over it. “People need to be in charge of their development plan,” says Morrison. “They need to seek out their sponsors and their mentors and be very strategic.” Morrison, like many in top positions, is no stranger to requests for guidance. She gets at least an email a day from people seeking a professional alliance. “Networking is working,” she says. You are never too old or too important to be mentored, and a good mentoring relationship can pay off for both parties. Liz Davidson, 42, took a chance on recent college graduate Danielle Perry

in 2009, hiring her to help with marketing and press for her start-up company, Financial Finesse, a provider of financial education programs for the workplace. At first, Davidson trained and guided Perry. These days, she relies on the 28-year-old to keep her abreast of the latest trends in marketing. “She got promoted two or three times, and now I consider her an adviser to me as well as the rest of the team when it comes to marketing and positioning,” says Davidson. “She really manages everything. She
manages me.” Mentors and mentees alike must set objectives and determine how much time to commit. For a new parent, goals could include discussions on how to balance work demands with family stresses. A mid-level executive might need help identifying her next step within the company. Assistance can come not only from people but also from technology, as Dennis Agusi discovered. In January, the internal communications officer of Royal Philips Electronics
faced the nerve-wracking job of giving a talk before 100 communications professionals in the Netherlands. So he used a company application called ConnectUs to request publicspeaking advice. Some 25 volunteer mentors responded, and Agusi found one who agreed to coach him. The talk was so successful that he was ranked the top speaker out of the almost dozen who presented, he said. The next time around, he may find himself paying it forward and being the mentor himself.
