After sitting out one municipal vote, David Climenhaga is re-entering the race for St. Albert city council. Climenhaga ran for council in 2007, finishing eighth out of 13 candidates and 150 votes short of a seat. This time around, though, Climenhaga says he knows the process better and is hoping for a better showing. “I think almost everybody you meet, if you make a favourable impression, they’ll vote for you — if they get out and vote,” he said, adding that he doesn’t see a place for negative politics in municipal campaigns. Climenhaga currently works as a communications advisor for the United Nurses of Alberta. He has also worked as an editor and journalist for The Globe and Mail and the Calgary Herald. He also writes a blog at www.albertadiary.ca, which has garnered quite a following. He has served on the St. Albert Public Library board, taught journalism at The King’s University College in Edmonton, and chaired the 2009 Special Olympics Provincial Summer Games in St. Albert.

Climenhaga said he decided to run for council to keep working for the betterment of the community. “There’s an awful lot of people saying they at least want to see some new faces and new voices running for council,” he said. As for how the political landscape has changed since he last ran, Climenhaga feels that, overall, things are far more positive. “There was a lot of negativity about Servus Place at the time, but now that facility, the use of it has matured in the community,” he said. Given his time serving on the library board, the library is at the top of his list of issues during the campaign. But Climenhaga also plans to touch on regional governance issues leading up to the Oct. 21 vote. “This is a real area of concern for me, and it should be a real area of concern for voters, but it seems a little technical and remote,” he said. “We need people who can understand the process and work to a better system.” He added that environmental issues are also high on his agenda, even with progress made in the past few years. “We need to take additional steps. I know the garbage changes were controversial, but I think that’s an effort to move in an environmentally responsible direction, and that kind of approach needs to be encouraged,” he said. More information on Climenhaga and his campaign can be found on his website at www. davidclimenhaga.ca.

The final report of the St. Albert Trail Improvement Committee brings to a close the committee’s 18 months of work and includes principles of vision, an executive summary of key findings and recommendations on signage, bylaw amendments and a long-term sidewalk plan.

Several projects tendered for 2013 have come in under budget, so City administration asked council to reallocate more than $1.14 million in funds to address other high-priority repair projects.

inally, a chance to breathe. It seems like, for the past few weeks, St. Albert has been going non-stop with events. It all started with three days of stomach-churning excitement — both in the rodeo ring and on the midway — at the Rainmaker Rodeo and Exhibition, and Yp >c\ee :ffb continued with plenty of hand-clapping, foot-stomping and face painting at the International Children’s Festival. This past weekend, there were hundreds at the starting line for the Roy Financial Mayor’s Walk for Charity on Saturday, followed a scant half-hour later by the official opening of the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce’s outdoor Farmers’ Market in downtown St. Albert. Sunday saw another successful soapbox derby put on by the Spirit of St. Albert Society. Before that, on June 13, a great crowd gathered for another successful Pecha Kucha Night at the Enjoy Centre. Add in a number of high school graduations, dance recitals and countless charity walks over those few weeks, and it has been go-go-go for many around St. Albert. But for the next little while, it seems like things are dying down just a little bit. There’s nothing major planned for Saturday, and the National Aboriginal Day Festival scheduled for Sunday in Lions Park is a great chance to take a lawn chair, see some great entertainment and soak in a little bit of First Nations culture. During this lull, though — brief as it may be — it’s also prudent to thank the organizers working tirelessly behind the scenes and the volunteers working on the front lines to make sure these events go off without any hitches. It may seem almost like a cliché to do so here in St. Albert given the city’s enormous volunteer spirit, but the last thing any of us should do is take their hard work for granted. Of course, it’s all going to start up again very soon. In fact, tonight (Thursday) marks the last St. Albert Cash Mob before it takes a break for the summer, and Canada Day festivities are raring to go on July 1. But, when it all settles down again, please don’t forget about all those who made it happen and are making our city a better place to live.

n Monday, Oct. 21, the residents of St. Albert will be asked to cast their votes to select a mayor, six councillors and trustees for two schools boards for the next four years. Candidates will soon be hitting the campaign trail as election day is only four months away. Over the past two municipal elections the voter turnout has been less than stellar. In 2007, 34.5 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot, and in 2010, the turnout was 34.2 per cent. This means two-thirds of eligible voters simply did not exercise their right to choose the elected officials to fulfill governance roles and significantly influence the future of our community.

DXcZfcd

G8IB<I :`kp :fleZ`ccfi Dp :`kp Such low turnouts at election time have always puzzled me. When asked to pen this column for the St. Albert Leader, I thought it timely to speak on the topic of elections and turnout. In fact, for this column, the title should be “Your City.” After all, St. Albert is your city and it is your voice that will ultimately determine what our city will look like over the next 10, 20, and 30 years or more. We are fortunate to live in a country that believes in democracy and freedom,

where eligible citizens have the right to express their opinions and select candidates they believe will best represent them and provide a good quality of life where we feel safe and secure, as well as living in a community that enjoys a thriving economy, an active lifestyle that embodies recreation amenities, arts and culture and much more. Have we become too complacent and apathetic to take time out of our busy lives to learn what each candidate stands for then make the short trip to the polling station to vote? All it takes is a few minutes once every four years. Really, is this too much to ask? My hope is that eligible voters will catch election fever this year and take

There are several ways to learn about the candidate’s issues, personalities, priorities, abilities, skills, commitment levels and how they will best represent you to make our community one you are proud to be part of. Catch the election fever and plan to attend the all candidates’ forums, read the campaign brochures, read the local papers to understand the candidates’ views on relevant topics. It seems Brent Rathgeber has made some fast friends on the other side of the House of Commons. The Edmonton-St. Albert MP, who announced on June 5 that he was leaving the federal Conservative caucus to sit as an independent over amendments to his private member’s bill, got a rousing round of applause in the House on Tuesday after asking his first question of the government as a part of Question Period that day. Rathgeber’s question focused on changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker program that stemmed from high-profiles cases of abuse, like one involving RBC attempting to replace Canadian information

technology workers with TFWs, and the impact they have had on businesses in Alberta. “Why did the government overreact by changing the rules, making the program more expensive and difficult to access, rather than simply enforcing the rules against outsourcing?” the MP asked. Rathgeber recently held a roundtable discussion with members of the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce on the topic of TFWs, with the participants there telling him that the changes would have a big impact on their ability to stay in business. After asking his question, members of opposition parties applauded for a good while, prompting the Speaker of the

House to call for order three times. Rathgeber could also be seen on the House of Commons webcast shaking hands with a fellow MP on the opposition side of the floor. Kellie Leitch, Conservative MP for Simcoe-Grey (Ont.) and the parliamentary secretary for Human Resources Minister Diane Finley, responded to Rathgeber’s question, saying that the changes to the TFW program were designed to ensure “Canadians always come first in line for every [position].” “Our reforms strengthen compliance and oversight to ensure the program is being used as it is intended — to make sure Canadians are first line, and when there are absolute shortages, that temporary foreign workers are available,” Leitch said.

According to Mabel Spady, the secret to long life lies in a bottle. Spady, a resident at North Ridge Lodge in St. Albert, will celebrate her 102nd birthday on Sunday, although staff at the facility marked the momentous occasion last week with the rest of the residents who have June birthdays. And she said the secret to her longevity is a shot of alcohol that she has each and every morning, a tradition that was passed down from her parents. “I like to get up and have that while I’m reading the paper,” said Spady, who was born June 23, 1911, in Erskine, Alta.

“I never make any bones about anything I do,” she added. Spady is still feeling spry these days, getting around with the help of a walker after falling last year and breaking her hip. “I’ve got a bunch of rods in my leg,” she added, “and I’ve lost my balance. If I had my balance, I could get up and dance a jig! But I can’t do it.” But she does still put a lot of stock into her appearance — “I went through 10 pairs of shoes this morning before I got a pair that fit,” Spady said — and she has nothing but praise for North Ridge Lodge and the staff there. “It’s a wonderful place to stay here. They’ve been awfully, awfully good to me,” she said.

After many years away, the Perrott family, in their pursuit of growth, in St. Albert have taken over their old property on St. Albert Trail next to the river and opened the marine shop to go along with their store up the trail. Boating season is upon us; go and say hi to Chad Perrott and his team and congratulate them on growing their business! >i\Xk E`^_k Pecha Kucha Night #5 was another great success at the Enjoy Centre last week. Over 120 attended and were privy to some great 20-slide-by-20-second talks. Art, business, bees and more filled the evening as everyone connected. The crowd was blown away by the youth speakers Emma Richardson (age 11), Matti Thurlin (age 17) and Cameron Vilcsak (age 17) who left everyone very impressed with their talks. Mark your calendar for the Pecha Kucha Night #6 as the next one is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3. Excerpt from our Valedictorian, Cody Miller… Our theme for this year’s graduation is “Be Present”. One could interpret this literally as a reminder to show up diligently to work or classes. This would be especially helpful for some of us who struggled to do so for those early morning classes. I do, however, not dwell on the past nor is it to worry about the future. It means to experience what is happening right now all around us….. …We were on this journey together. Our mutual desire to be fully immersed in the French experience proved to me that, collectively, we were all choosing to be present. It also allowed us to become a much closer group than we could have ever imagined!...

Staff from Paul Kane High School took a trip down memory lane this week, all without having to leave the school. Current and former teachers and administrative staff from Paul Kane came together on Tuesday in the school’s cafeteria to catch up and mark the school’s 50th anniversary. Donna Chanasyk has taught at the school since 1977, and did the bulk of the work in organizing Tuesday’s celebration. “I just thought we needed to do something,” she said, “so, in about May, I decided, let’s see what we can pull off.” Several St. Albert Public Schools trustees also attended the event, including Merrin Nuc, who was part of Paul Kane’s first graduating class in 1963. Displays lined the walls of the cafeteria outlining the school’s achievements, and yearbooks were on display from all but one of the school’s 50 years. As part of the celebration, Chanasyk dug up photos of each of the school’s principals, which were framed and will be hung in a prominent spot in one of the hallways. “I think it’s pretty special,” Chanasyk said. “It’s something that, unless you do it, it doesn’t happen, and people forget who was here when. It’s kind of neat for people to go back and say, ‘Oh, I had that principal and that principal.’” One of those photos is of John Hrynew, who was principal of Paul Kane from 1965 to 1986. “It was a great place to be, to be

She said that, for a lot of them, Paul Kane holds a special place in their hearts. “I think it’s our tradition of excellence,” she said. “That’s been a theme we had since I came on staff, and I think it’s still the same.” Meanwhile, current principal Duncan Knoll said it was great to see so many familiar faces come out. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “I’ve been in the district for 30

years, so I know a lot of these people from being in different schools and being at Paul Kane. And because it’s the 50th year, the 50th graduating class, it’s so nice to see so many people take time to be here.” Prior to being named principal of Paul Kane, Knoll was a teacher at the school in the early 1990s, and he understands the bonds a lot of teachers feel with the school. “It’s not just a job. For a lot of teachers, it’s a passion; it’s what they love to do. They feel like they’re contributing to the … community of St. Albert, so you feel very attached,” he said. “A lot of the people in this room helped build the St. Albert community.”

Another teacher from that era was Ann Scott, who taught math there from 1986 to 1994. “It’s been really fun to see people I haven’t seen in a long time, people who I taught with in that timeframe,” said Scott, who now teaches at Bellerose Composite High School. But perhaps even more special for Scott — who helped manage the rugby teams at the time — was seeing her own children attend Paul Kane and participate in the sports programs there. “It was fun, because I knew the teachers at the time, so having teachers that I taught with teach my kids was a fun experience,” she said.

D<KIF :I<8K@M< J<IM@:<J Æ It has been a stressful couple of years for college students. An unstable economy has led many students to second-guess their investments in higher education, and fear regarding employment prospects after graduation are common among today’s students. Graduates who majored in fields of study that are more recession-proof than others could have decided advantages over students who went with other majors. Knowing which careers are still going strong and which have stalled can help college students with goals of finding a career with growth potential. =`eXeZ`Xc XeXcpjkj Xe[ dXeX^\ij1 Many forecasts indicate jobs in finance will continue to remain strong with high growth. Despite financial ups and downs, people still need to be educated on how and where to spend their money. Students with degrees in finance and marketing may have advantages over others. <e^`e\\ij1 Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs. Many different fields require engineers,

from mechanical and civil industries to electrical and chemical industries. Engineering remains a strong course of study with many different subsets for specialization. E\knfib`e^&jpjk\dj X[d`e`jkiXk`fe1 With the world revolving around computers, jobs in the systems administration field remain viable. Keep in mind that there is also a wide array of competition in these careers, but the ability to make high salaries is what drives many to pursue careers in networking and computer systems administration. 8ZZflek`e^1 Similar to other financial careers, accounting jobs remain stable despite the uncertain economy. Where there is money to be spent, individuals and businesses will require the services of accountants to keep all of their accounts in check. Entry-level accountants can receive inhouse promotions and become finance executives. Elij`e^&d\[`ZXc ZXi\\ij1 Jobs in health care continue to be strong as well. An aging population keeps nurses, doctors, aides and medicalsupply companies in business. There are many different nursing specializations, making nursing an attractive career choice.

Jf]knXi\ [\j`^e Xe[ [\m\cfgd\ek1 Keeping today’s digital world running requires a staff of people constantly updating and creating new software. From games to business applications to all of those entertaining apps downloaded each day, software designers pave the way for computer innovation. JXc\jg\fgc\1 Sales is one of the oldest and longest-running types of occupations available. Every industry needs quality sales professionals to meet with the public and drive interest in products and services. There are sales positions in just about every industry. <[lZXkfij1 The millennial generation is just as large as the baby boom generation, and children will continue to fill up classrooms across the world. It is estimated three million more teachers are needed by 2015 to fill openings in the United States alone. Also, initiatives to require Pre-K classes could increase the number of education jobs even further. :fdglk\i `e]fidXk`fe j\Zli`kp1 The need to protect personal information from those who want to exploit it continues to grow. Lions Park is set to come alive once again this Sunday with the colours and smells of several aboriginal cultures. Sunday marks the fifth annual National Aboriginal Day Festival in St. Albert, a melding of Métis, First Nations and Inuit traditions that makes for a fun and educational afternoon out. Libby Szarka is on the festival’s board of directors, and she said it’s very important to include all three cultures in the celebration. “A lot of people don’t realize there are so many different parts to the aboriginal community,” Szarka said. “Not everybody who is aboriginal knows about a tipi. Some do and some don’t; everyone has their own culture and own way of doing things. I think that it’s a pretty unique part to embrace the roots of each one.” She added that, even though the Métis influence on the St. Albert area is welldocumented, there is likely more First Nations history in the area

than most realize. “Métis is a big part of St. Albert, for sure, but I think there is a lot of First Nations [influence],” she said. “Especially because I also work at Poundmaker’s Lodge, and we do a lot in the community.” This year, in addition to the traditional dances, drumming, Métis jigging and Inuit throat singing, organizers have added some contemporary music acts, like singers Tim Harwill and Darlene Olson. There will also be plenty of giveaways for kids courtesy of sponsors like ATCO, and the festival will end with a round dance. “It’s a symbol of people uniting, coming together in celebration,” Szarka said. Attendance at the festival has been steadily growing over the past five years, to the point where Szarka expects a great crowd out on Sunday. “Each year, we get at least 250 more people show up,” she said. “We’re expecting about 1,250 people this year.”

They won’t be burning any paperwork, but parents, staff and students at Bertha Kennedy Catholic Community School are getting ready to celebrate paying off a major piece of infrastructure. The parent council at the school, located on Larose Drive, is hosting their annual year-end barbecue on Friday, and along with that, they will be celebrating making the final payment on the school’s new playground, which was opened in November 2009. “We’ve been using it and enjoying it, but we haven’t had it totally paid for,” said viceprincipal Sherry Foote. “But now it’s finally paid for, so we’re inviting everyone who helped be a part of it.” The playground was designed by PlayWorks in Edmonton, and was built entirely through

volunteer labour. “Plus we did a bunch of extra work,” Foote said. “It wasn’t just a matter of building a playground; we had to redo the way the drainage was. Every year, the City would have problems; there would be huge puddles. So we even took out trees and laid concrete in places there wasn’t concrete.” But seeing the smiles on the faces of students — and on the faces of other kids in the neighbourhood — have made all the hard work worthwhile. “The kids love it. Even last week, we came out and did a little work bee, just doing some painting and planting. And at the time, someone came with their family and a bunch of kids, and they had a birthday party there, just from the community,” Foote said. “I know that playground is well-utilized outside of school by people in the community. It definitely gets a lot of use.”

Old will meet new as the Musée Heritage Museum opens up a new exhibit on Tuesday. The exhibit is called Transforming Traditions, and will display a number of First Nations and Métis crafts that are inspired by traditional garments, but are constructed using modern methods and materials. Musée curator Joanne White said the idea for the exhibit was first hatched a couple of years ago, when the museum hosted an exhibit on Métis beadwork. “A lot of artists were coming in to see the old work to get inspired for their own work,” White said. “So we thought, this summer ... it would be nice to do something. We started putting out feelers to some of the artists we knew about, to find out what they were working on and how they were transforming traditions, taking some of the old techniques and changing some of the colours or

MPSSCS4794885MPSE

patterns.” While White hopes that visitors gain an appreciation for the techniques, both old and new, being employed, she also hopes they come away with the realization that these sorts of artifacts are still being made. “It’s ongoing; it’s not something that’s from the past,” she said. “It continues on and is very much an active thing. It’s still part of the culture.” Most of the artists who have loaned their work to the museum hail from northern and central Alberta. The contemporary twists put on the garments include modern fabrics — cotton-polyester blends instead of leather, for example — or styles. One piece on display takes modern textiles even further, substituting duct tape for rawhide in the construction of a parfleche bag. Such bags were used in the past to carry dried meats or pemmican. Another piece is a necklace made

of leather, with fish scales delicately attached to it and arranged to look like flowers. While the materials have changed, the workmanship and the attention to detail in many of the pieces has not gone out of style. “People are taking these techniques and spending hours on them, honouring that tradition, honouring their ancestors and making beautiful work,” White said. With National Aboriginal Day on Sunday and the 2013 Alberta Indigenous Games coming up in August in St. Albert, White said it was perfect timing for an exhibit like this. “We like to bring in that local history, which is so much a part of what St. Albert is about,” she said. “And this is a really neat opportunity to kind of take some things we normally portray and take a different look at it.” The Musée Heritage Museum is located in St. Albert Place (5 St. Anne St.). Summer vacation doesn’t mean your health needs to take a holiday, too. Even if you’re heading out of town for a much-anticipated getaway in the coming weeks, you can easily maintain some semblance of your exercise and nutrition regimen. All it takes is a little forethought and preparation, says Molly Morgan, a board certified sports specialist dietitian and author of The Skinny Rules: The 101 Secrets Every Skinny Girl Knows. “There is nothing worse than coming home from a vacation a few pounds heavier than before you left,” she tells Sun Media from her home in upstate New York. To help fend off such a scenario, Morgan offers readers the following basic tips for a healthier next trip ...

(

;F PFLI ?FD<NFIB Research your destination for nearby hiking trails, swimming pools, fitness centres, walking paths, bike rentals and yoga classes, says Morgan. “Staying active on vacation can help you return without packing on a few pounds,” she adds. “Plus, it will get you out and about in the area that you are visiting!”

)

G8:B <O<I:@J< <JJ<EK@8CJ Don’t leave home without stretchy bands and a yoga mat tucked into your suitcase. Then you can squeeze in a little extra exercise in your hotel room, says Morgan. Stretchy bands can be used for arm and leg resistance exercises, while the yoga mat — besides being ideal for yoga — is perfect for doing crunches and lunges, advises the 34-year-old married mother of two young children. “If you forget your yoga mat, try a hotel towel instead — not quite as good, but it works,” she adds. And don’t forget to pack sneakers and workout clothes.

JK8P ?P;I8K<; Morgan recommends vacationing with a reusable water bottle. “When you’re out of your routine, sometimes water intake can quickly slip,” explains the five-foot-five native New Yorker. “Having a water bottle with you helps to keep your water intake up while on the go.” Or if you are travelling in an area where it is not safe to drink the water, then stock up on a case of water at the grocery store (see Tip No. 4) and avoid ice cubes in any of your drinks, Morgan adds.

+

><K >IF:<I@<J Among the first stops you should make when arriving at your destination is the grocery store, Morgan says. She advises to stock up on dried fruit, nuts, peanut butter, whole wheat bread, popcorn, bananas and apples. “If you have a refrigerator, grab some berries, low fat milk and cereal and yogurt for simple breakfasts or snacks,” she notes. “Having these foods on hand to

snack on in between meals will help to keep your hunger in check and prevent overeating at a meal.

,

GC8E =FI I<JK8LI8EKJ Speaking of overeating, Morgan points out that restaurants are notorious for large portions. She suggests checking out menus and nutrition facts beforehand. “Don’t be swayed by others’ choices. Stick to your plan!” she urges. “Skip sauces, ask for double vegetables, order a meal of all side dishes like baked sweet potato, broccoli and a side salad.”

-

><K :FFB@E> If you can, try to arrange for accommodations that have a stove and fridge. “Sometimes the extra cost can be offset by the money you save on not eating out every meal and snack,” Morgan explains.

.

JK@:B N@K? 8 J:?<;LC< This may be easier said than done because travel schedules often go awry. But be flexible, Morgan says, and try to stick with at least three meals per day and snacks in between. “If you know you’re going to a fancier dinner, make lunch a bit lighter,” explains the nutrition guru. “Skipping meals will wind up making you hungrier for the next meal and less likely to stick to your eating gameplan.”

/

<8K =IL@K M<>>@<J Challenge yourself to have a fruit and/or vegetable with every meal, Morgan advises. “For example: berries at breakfast, salad with lunch and double vegetables at dinner,” she says. “And no, french fries do not count!” For more from Molly Morgan, visit her website at creativenutritionsolutions.com

JLE D<;@8 E<NJ J<IM@:<J Æ The message to quit smoking doesn’t seem to be getting through to Canadians. Last year, 20.3 per cent of Canadians reported they smoke daily or occasionally — a figure that has remained relatively steady since 2009, despite the fact warning labels on cigarette packs are bigger, packs are hidden behind the counter in stores and smoking is banned in an ever-growing number of public places. The Statistics Canada report found the percentage of smokers is highest in the 20-34 age group. Heart and Stroke Foundation health policy director Manuel Arango said governments have been effective reaching the general population, but there has to be a “tweaking” of the approach now to target the specific groups where smoking rates are still high, such as among people with mental illness and the aboriginal population. “It is true that ... to get smoking rates to go from 50 to 45 per cent is much easier than getting smoking down from 20 to 15 per cent,” Arango said. But while smoking numbers have stalled, StatsCan’s Canadian Community Health Survey found that drinking has decreased. About five million Canadians (17.4 per cent) reported being “heavy” drinkers — having five or more drinks at a time at least once a month last year. That’s down to about the same level it was for five years before a spike in 2011, to 19 per cent. And when it comes to getting off the couch, more than half of Canadians surveyed said they are “moderately active” or better. But it’s not enough, because about 4.7 million adults are obese, and 6.5 per cent have diabetes, according to the data.

Planning a dream wedding can be magical, but it can also turn into a nightmare of debt. Say “I don’t to debt. “No one wants to start off their marriage by accumulating a lot of wedding debt that they will be paying off for years, says financial expert John Tracy. The average wedding and honeymoon now costs $32,000 — up five per cent from last year, according to Weddingbells magazine. It’s a significant sum of money, “so if a couple wants to undertake this expense it’s important to plan for it — create a budget and savings plan and look for ways to creatively cut costs, says Tracy, a senior VP for TD Canada Trust. “For example, if your wedding will cost $10,000, but you and your partner already have student loans and a car to pay off, then you should seriously reconsider your wedding budget or ideally give yourself more time to save and get your current expenses under control before taking on more. Debt is no big deal for some:

38 per cent of Canadians are comfortable taking on debt to help pay for their wedding and honeymoon, reveals new research from TD Canada Trust. However, while interest rates are low and taking on wedding debt may seem like an affordable option, it’s important to start a marriage on the right financial footing, Tracy says. “Even if you don’t have a lot of money to save, be diligent about putting away a little bit with each paycheque and it will add up. You might need to cut back on nonessential spending, like going to the movies or ordering takeout, but if you can manage to put away $200 a month and your spouseto-be can do the same for a year, you’d have more than $4,800

saved for the big day. Certified wedding planner Denise Georgiou-Newell sees weddings averaging $35,000$37,000 for approximately 100 guests. And what busts budgets are the little things that aren’t tacked on at the beginning, including seating cards, favours, wedding party gifts, guest books, gratuities for their day-of vendors. The most expensive wedding she’s done is $200,000; the least expensive is $5,000. Meanwhile, Todd Sigurdson, a financial planning expert, suggests borrowing less by building up a nest egg in a wedding account. “If you are going to have to borrow, you should consider the various financing options available and choose the most appropriate one.

It’s Paradise found for the new owner of a local pet store. With over 20 years of experience in the pet business, Greg Penno has taken over the reins of Paradise Pet Centre on St. Albert Trail from longtime owners Jayne and Lorne Terrault, but customers should still look forward to the same high level of customer service they’ve come to expect over the years. “Priority number one for us is to make sure our customers get what they need when they come in, and in a timely manner, said store manager Adrian Theroux. Customers will notice a few changes, though, like some new products on the shelves. “We’re going to be increasing our inventory about 15 to 20 per cent, Theroux said. “And there are going to be a good amount of cosmetic changes to the store as well. Over the next six months or so, as customers come in, they’ll be able to see our progress. But Theroux added that the store will remain committed to their rescue-friendly model — opting to display and adopt out pets from local rescue organization rather than sell puppies or kittens — and even expand on that side of the business. “My goal is to have an adoption event every weekend, he said. “We just introduced iWoof, which is a new local rescue, and we’re going to be getting some puppies from them this week in the store.

Manufacturing employment has fallen in seven of the past nine months. Over the past year, the sector has lost nearly 100,000 jobs; the rest of the economy has added nearly 350,000. And adding insult to injury, the manufacturing sector snagged seven of the top 10 spots on the ‘Worst Jobs’ list in Canadian Business magazine’s Best/Worst Jobs Report. But don’t despair — joining the ranks of the unemployed isn’t your only option. “We’re still seeing shortages of workers in transportation and warehousing, as well as in most of the skilled trades from carpenters and electricians to plumbers and welders,” says Peter Harris, chief editor at Workopolis. Workers in manufacturing may actually possess transferable skills as well as the necessary expertise to transition into other key areas, including the skilled trades. “Learning a specialization within manufacturing, or pursuing a new career in the skilled trades can make people much more employable and adaptable to the changing economic situation,” says Harris. “There are numerous programs and services available to help workers make the transition.” For a smooth change, take these tips from Workopolis: 8ggcp ]fi Xggi\ek`Z\j_`gj1 Working under the direction of a certified person in the industry allows for a low-cost, highreturn learning opportunity.
