SACHS students prep for NOLA GLENN COOK St. Albert Leader
They call it The Big Easy, but local students who are heading to New Orleans next year won’t be taking it easy at all. Thirty students from St. Albert Catholic High School are getting set to head to Louisiana from Feb. 1 to 9, 2014, as part of an annual mission trip to the area organized with the help of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. They’ll make the trip along with four SACHS staff members and four members of the Oblate Youth Ministry team, and spend their time helping residents who are still trying to get back on their feet from hurricane Katrina in 2006. “I hope I become a better person,” said Grade 12 student Quintin Philipson. “I’ve seen some of the stuff that’s happened, and I want to feel Photo: GLENN COOK, St. Albert Leader what they feel. Ranson keeps motoring
GLENN COOK St. Albert Leader
More than halfway through a 30,000-kilometre motorcycle ride, Dave Ranson’s bum isn’t that numb just yet. It was Aug. 25 when Ranson pushed off from Riverside Motorsports in St. Albert to log the first few kilometres of his Prairies to Penguins ride to the southernmost tip of South America to raise money for spinal cord injury research. Now, after more than 110 days on the road and 18,000 kilometres added to the odometer of his Suzuki DR650 motorcycle, he said his backside is no worse for wear. “After all my research, I have found the places more beautiful and the people more friendly than I anticipated. I am just thrilled everyday that I am here — perhaps with the exception of a few sick days, that is,” Ranson said recently in an email to the Leader. “The days in Central and South America are short and I have only been riding at most 250 kilometres per day, so the wear and tear on the body has been no problem.” The bike, nicknamed Skelly, is holding out pretty well too, with an oil leak in Costa Rica the only bit of unscheduled maintenance so far. “We have been to 15,000 feet and had no problems,” Ranson said. “Of course, at that altitude, there is reduced performance for man and machine, but I have not needed to do any adjustments.” In fact, he said, the biggest
surprises of the trip so far have been in the people he has met. “I was interested to discover that the people living in rural Ecuador actually wear the clothes you see them wearing in travel journals or National Geographic. They are not just dressing up for the tourists, they really dress like that,” he said. Meanwhile, although he was warned before embarking about some rough areas in Mexico and Colombia, much of the trip has been without incident.
“The bus drivers, on the other hand, are crazy.” Dave Ranson Motorcycle trekker “I only felt uncomfortable on one day in Honduras. It was all in my head, however, because I had read so many stories about corrupt policemen stopping you dozens of times per day. It turned out I rode through Honduras with only one military stop that lasted 15 seconds,” Ranson said. “The rest of the time, I have never felt unsafe or in any danger. In fact, I traveled through Colombia for two weeks before even thinking about illegal armed groups until someone reminded me when I was asking for route advice.” Ranson has even made a few new friends along the way, including a fellow motorbike rider from Israel who he met in Colombia.
“I met him on the side of the highway while taking a break and enjoying the view in Colombia. That was back on Nov. 21 and we are still riding together,” he said. “We are having great fun sharing the events of each day and learning about each other’s country. I have learned more about Israel in the last three weeks than I ever expected to know.” Other drivers on the roads, though, sometimes aren’t as friendly. “At first, I felt as if the drivers here are overly aggressive. But it’s not aggression, it is just a cultural way of driving,” Ranson said. “You take the space that presents itself and you do not hesitate or someone else will. Honk your horn all you want; it’s not an act of anger but an audible notice of your presence. “The bus drivers, on the other hand, are crazy. They will pass anywhere and everywhere. Buses are big and motorcycles small, so guess who has to move out of the way?” While Ranson was somewhat homesick during the first few weeks of the trip, mainly while he was travelling through Mexico, he said he doesn’t feel the distance so much anymore. “Each day seems somewhat normal and routine now,” he said. “Not boring, mind you, because each day seems to get better and better. I’m feeling really comfortable and confident now that I have a few months of this under my belt.” Still, he is staying in touch with family back home almost every day

St. Albert motorcyclist Dave Ranson is more than halfway to his destination of Ushuaia, Argentina, on his Prairies to Penguins fundraising ride. through an Internet application called Viber or through a satellite device. Ranson’s wife, Wanitta, flew down to meet him in Belize in October, which he said was a great break after going through Mexico. “To meet Wanitta there was, and is, the highlight of the trip so far. It came at a time when I was missing home quite a bit so it was great to have her meet me,” he said. And he has flown back to Canada to celebrate Christmas with his family and see some snow before finishing up the trek in February. “Although it is a long flight from
Lima, Peru, and back, it will be worth it to see my wife, kids and family for Christmas,” he said. “It will also give me an opportunity to bring home some of the items I don’t need and bring back some supplies like tires.” But, even if, for whatever reason, Ranson doesn’t make it to his ultimate destination, the trip is already a success, as he had raised $12,000 for spinal cord injury research before he even left. “I really hope that I can see some penguins however,” he said. “That and standing next to the road sign in Ushuaia, Argentina, will be a memory never to forget.”

Art and functionality combine in new outfall
GLENN COOK St. Albert Leader

Work crews brave cold temperatures on Thursday, Dec. 19, to install a new grit interceptor on a stormwater outfall along the Sturgeon River just west of the Perron Street bridge.
Art and functionality are coming together in new ways on a City of St. Albert utility project. On Thursday and Friday, crews were installing a new grit interceptor structure on a stormwater outfall along the Sturgeon River near the Perron Street bridge. But this was no ordinary interceptor — not only were engineers involved in designing, but so was sculptor Darrell Colyer, making it as much a piece of art as it is practical. “When you’ve got artists combined with engineers, they don’t typically see things the same way. One likes straight lines, one likes curvy lines, so there were some issues there,” said Jon Cleland, senior project manager for the City’s engineering services department. “But overall I think the result was positive,” he added. “I think everyone learned something from that, and it will certainly help us going forward.” The grit interceptor collects particles before they reach the river, reducing the amount of runoff from roads, like sand
and gravel, in the water. The City has been doing regular maintenance on their outfalls for several years, but the idea of incorporating art is fairly new. “It was decided to see if there was any synergy that could be obtained by having various departments work together and maybe bring someone — an artist — in at the design stage to see if there was anything we could do to combine art with functionality,” Cleland said. “We hadn’t really done this kind of collaboration before, and we thought it would be a great learning experience for us.” While Cleland said that artistic collaborations like this were a definite possibility for future projects, the City will consider them carefully. “It’s going to be budget-driven of course, so going forward that will have to be taken into consideration. ... And we wouldn’t be doing this kind of thing if the outfall was in the middle of nowhere or in a marsh where nobody ever got to see it,” he said. “It’s got to be relevant. We wouldn’t do it just because.”

WHERE IS THIS?
Oil pipeline a Catch-22
Here’s a photo of a building or landmark around St. Albert. Can you figure out where it is?
C
hristmas came early for Big Oil this year. Short of United States President Barack Obama finally giving his approval to the Keystone XL pipeline, possibly the day that Alberta oilsands companies have been looking forward to the most arrived by Glenn Cook on Thursday, Dec. 19, when — after three years of review and thousands of submissions — the National Energy Board gave its approval to Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline, moving the conduit slated to run 1,177 kilometres from Bruderheim, Alta, to Kitimat, B.C., one step closer to reality. Of course, that approval came with more than 200 conditions, most of which are aimed at addressing environmental concerns. As Albertans who depend on the oilsands for our livelihood and to pay for everything from health care to roads to education, it’s sometimes difficult to reconcile those environmental concerns with the need to open up new markets and maintain our prosperity. That’s precisely what the pipeline proposes to do in China, Asia and the rest of the Pacific Rim. At the same time, though, it would be a disaster of epic proportions if the pipeline were ever to break and spill. And given the number of oil spills that have made headlines over the past couple of years, it’s difficult to believe the same won’t happen with this project. Of course, the ideal solution would be to process the oil that comes out of the ground in Alberta right here in our own province. Unfortunately, there has been little appetite from private industry to do that so far, and the provincial government isn’t about to get involved, either. In the end, for the sake of Alberta’s prosperity, the Northern Gateway and other pipelines need to go ahead. But it’s up to the province to keep a close eye on the pipes and the companies operating them — or up to us as Albertans to pressure the government to make sure they do. We may not have many other choices.

Joy of giving abounds this holiday season
T
his Christmas season has inspired me to reflect what many of us may forget in the hustle of the season, Christmas is a time of joyous gift giving. On Dec. 2, many of our community leaders were invited to a luncheon to celebrate the 45th anniversary of St. Albert Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). At the event, John L. McKnight spoke on the virtues of building your community with an assetbased approach. To build and nurture a community, not around its shortcomings and needs, but on the skills, talents and gifts our residents share in making this a great place. As I embark on my new stewardship as a councillor of the City of St. Albert, engaged most recently in setting a
Gilles
PREFONTAINE City councillor My City budget for 2014, I have been reminded over and over again of the incredible assets that exist in this community. doctors and nurses. And there are those who work tireless hours, often unseen and unrecognized, without whom our community would grind to a halt, mired in a mountain of snow and ice, garbage and disrepair. There are also our neighbours who are many and varied, sharing their passion for the arts, coaching sports, continually volunteering to help others in the community, and who stand as a strong voice to protect this earth which we call our home. These are people and organizations who believe in this community, choosing to operate their business in St. Albert and make this city a truly exceptional place to live, work and play. share those gifts not out of despair or obligation or need, but in joy of being capable of sharing our gifts with others. This personal reflection was reinforced once again earlier this month. Dec. 15 was Gaudete Sunday, more commonly known as Joy Sunday, when Christians celebrate the joyous anticipation of the Lord’s coming. Unfortunately, for many in our community this season is stressful, hectic and a reminder of the dire needs that do exist in our community. We are all called, not out of obligation or guilt, but in joy to give to others what gifts we have aplenty. I encourage each and every one of you this Christmas season, and throughout the year, to indulge in some joyous gift giving. Owned and operated by

I think the community has to ask itself, are we building something for the sake of building it or because most cities have one. St. Albert, because of our location has a number of much larger, more extensive facilities on our door step in Edmonton. If you have a visitor from another part of the country come to this area, would you take them to our museum or would you go to the Provincial Museum; would you take them to the grain elevators or would you take them Fort Edmonton. I expect the later in most cases. Let’s not try to compete against world class facilities. We don’t have the resources.

Prospects Academy a home run GLENN COOK St. Albert Leader
A St. Albert high school is quickly becoming home base for elite young baseball talent from across Canada. After a couple of years operating out of Athletes Nation in Campbell Business Park, the Alberta Collegiate Baseball Foundation’s Prospects Academy recently moved its headquarters to Bellerose Composite High School in St. Albert, bringing in players not only from Western Canada, but from the Maritimes as well. “I really liked the coaches at first … and I like the colours too,” said Ryan Van Snick, a Grade 12 catcher from Saint John, N.B. Head coach Cam Houston said it’s not just the colours, it’s the ability to move players forward in the sport that allows the academy to draw top talent from the rest of the country. “I think kids coming into the program and paying that kind of money, they want to go to school, and our big focus is moving guys on,” Houston said. “We play 30-35 games against college teams per year, U.S. and Canadian. So it’s a big

opportunity for kids to come in, get better competition and help set them up to go down to the U.S.” But there is some homegrown talent as well. Jackson Wark is a pitcher who lives in the Kingswood subdivision of St. Albert and planned to go to Bellerose before he heard about the Prospects Academy. “It’s helped a huge amount, getting to play a lot of games and practicing all winter,” said the 16-year-old Grade 11 student. “Last year, I put on 20 pounds just in the first two months of the fall. I was pretty skinny then, but not so much now.” Though it hasn’t been around long, the academy is already starting to see a fair amount of success. Graduate-turned-assistant coach Ethan Elias was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 22nd round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, and Wark was on the Canadian junior national team roster for a fall league instruction camp in Orlando, Fla., in September. And outfielder Josh Williams recently earned himself a full scholarship to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. The academy also allows
players the chance to play in elite tournaments all over North America, including ones in Kansas and in Georgia, some of which are against college teams. They’ll also participate in this year’s Best of the West tournament this April in Kamloops, B.C., which is hailed as the best high school tournament in Canada. Houston said that the relationship the academy has built with Bellerose has been wonderful. “I think the school treats our guys better than anybody,” Houston said. “They really look after the guys and the demands.” But with a busy schedule of practices, games and tournaments, balancing academics and athletics can be a bit of a challenge. “I find academics in Alberta are harder than in New Brunswick,” Van Snick said. “I’m doing alright in balancing my studies; I could maybe manage it a little more, but that’s just on myself.” For Wark, it’s especially tough, as he is also a full Internationale Baccalaureate student. “We have a lot of practice, but I find time. I just have to get more

There has also been a great deal of co-operation with the community, as players from afar are billeting with host families in St. Albert. As for the future, Houston said he’d like to expand the academy to bring in younger age groups, but overall, he’s very happy with where things are.
“Some bigger trips would be awesome, maybe a bigger facility one day to hold more players,” he said. Meanwhile, Wark and Van Snick have their sights set on NCAA Division 1 baseball, and they are confident the Prospects Academy is the way to get there. “I don’t think I’d be able to do it without the academy,” Wark said.

I had remote cameras going and that sort of thing,” Kushneryk said. While he has ventured to the United States and to Mexico in the past, this was Kushneryk’s first trip to Europe, and he was really impressed with the city. “Everyone was amazingly nice. It was weird because it’s such a small European country by comparison,” he said. “It was so clean and people were so friendly, Jesse it was just amazing. It reminded Kushneryk me of a town you would see in a Photographer Christmas movie.” “The worst part about it all,” he added, “was that the cheapest you could find a beer there was $15 Canadian.” For now, Kushneryk is happy to continue shooting for StAlbertSports.com and shooting weddings during the summer months. But, if he gets the opportunity, he said he would go to Europe to shoot curling again in a heartbeat. “I’m just waiting for the call,” he said.

PETS Making Christmas Merry and Safe for Your Pets
We all look forward to the hustle and bustle of Christmas — the decorations, the food and family traditions. Our pets, on the other hand, don’t quite understand what all the fuss is about. This is one of the most hazardous times of the year for our pets. Yummy Christmas treats for us — such as chocolate, alcohol, sugar-free baked goods, fat trimmings, grapes, raisins and currants — can all seriously hurt or even kill your dog or cat. Chocolate, especially the dark variety, can cause vomiting, diarrhea or worse, depending on the amount ingested. Sugarfree baking can cause hypoglycemia and potentially liver failure. We all know the hazards associated with poultry bones causing choking, stomach blockage and internal lacerations. Even too much fat can cause pancreatitis, especially if introduced suddenly into the diet. It’s best to stick to your pets’ regular diet with a small treat here or there. Christmas trees are both beautiful and dangerous. Ensure your tree is well secured so curious kitties entranced with the glittery decorations don’t pull it down on themselves or other family members. Use string to hang decorations in place of metal hooks. If you’re able, use non-breakable decorations. Avoid the use of tinsel. It’s almost impossible for cats to resist the Christmas bling, but if ingested, it could cause internal lacerations or “bunch” the intestine — not what you want to deal with on Christmas morning. Another common hazard to our furry friends is household plants. They’re beautiful and fragrant, but lurking behind this benign appearance is a very serious danger. Holly and mistletoe are very toxic and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, system collapse and even death. Any variety of lily is toxic to felines, seriously affecting their kidneys. Poinsettias and pine needles, although not as dangerous, should be avoided as well. Just like humans, our pets can get very stressed out during
the holiday season. Constant visitors, changes in routine like missed walks or playtime, or being left alone more frequently can all lead to stress, especially for our senior pets. Ensure they have a safe, quiet place to retreat to. “Planning ahead will go a long way to protect our best friends during the festive season,” states Dr. Katherine Takacs of Mission Ridge Animal Hospital. “Try to animal-proof your home before entertaining and decorating.”
Enjoy the Holidays with your Furry Family Members!

Movie monsters take over TWOS
DOUG JOHNSON Sun Media News Services
The Telus World of Science is getting ready to show the guts and gears behind some of film’s favourite beasts. How to Make a Monster: The Art and Technology of Animatronics opened at the Telus World of Science on Dec. 21. The 5,000 square-foot exhibition displays over 50 pieces made from latex, steel and aluminum. Some of the pieces are functional and can be set into motion by the audience members. Others are
stationary, showing either the mechanical insides of the creations, or their detailed skin, scales or fur. Australian company John Cox’s Creature Workshop gave life to the creatures which range from the monsters in Pitch Black (2000) to an ape from George of the Jungle 2 (2001). John Cox won the 1995 visual effects Academy Award for his work in Babe. “The hardest thing to do is getting something to move exactly the same way as it does if it was real,” said Cox, a veteran of around 20 feature films. “When we do animals,
and we have something to compare it to, that’s even more difficult because you know what it’s supposed to do, but aluminium and steel will only allow you to do certain things.” A few holes in the exhibit let Cox and his team craft a few brutes of their own. They produced a werewolf, an abominable snowman and an amphibious “Gillman.” The pieces are displayed along with their storyboards and initial designs, showing the process the team would normally go through in their creation. “I really like the Gillman because we designed that

without any of the constraints of actually having to produce a piece that worked for film,” Cox said. The exhibit began after the completion of Peter Pan (2003). Cox and his team knew there was going to be a lull in the workload, and they had many pieces that were just gathering dust until they had to be thrown away. Even with computer generated graphics now the industry standard, there is still a place for animatroincs in film, Cox said. “What you shoot is what you get,” Cox said.
Plugged in Paul Kane High School students Josh Darda (left) and Jade Simmons perform “Brian Wilson” by the Barenaked Ladies during the school’s annual PK Unplugged concert on Thursday, Dec. 19. The evening featured 20 musical acts made up of students and staff, and raised funds for both grad celebrations and for the Change for Africa club.

Gateway pipeline OK’d, but with conditions BILL KAUFMANN Sun Media News Services
Enbridge’s embattled Northern Gateway pipeline project has received a green light from the National Energy Board, though it’s subject to 209 conditions — many of them born of environmental concerns. After a three-year review and more than 10,000 submissions and presentations, the NEB’s joint review panel revealed its conclusion on Thursday, Dec. 19: the $7.9-billion pipeline meant to carry bitumen from Alberta to Kitimat, B.C., and then to Asia by tanker is in the national interest and won’t pose a significant environmental risk. “The panel is satisfied the proposed ... project is and will be required for the present and future public convenience and necessity,” the report read. “The panel concluded the environmental burdens associated with the project’s construction and routine operation can generally be effectively mitigated.” But the board’s decision is widely seen as only one step in a process, with some B.C. First Nations vowing continued resistance and court challenges. Among the NEB’s conditions was that Enbridge develop marine protection and caribou restoration plans. Enbridge must also develop an emergency response plan and a dedicated research program on the behaviour and cleanup of oil spills, as well as a comprehensive

Energy company Enbridge has had its $7.9-billion Northern Gateway pipeline approved by the National Energy Board — although that approval is subject to more than 200 conditions. training program for pipeline monitoring. Pipeline opponents — including a number of First Nations along its route — have long slagged the review as windowdressing, saying they expected an NEB approval of the 1,177-km pipeline. A B.C. government that’s been wary of the project on environmental grounds has recently come to a framework agreement with Alberta over it but has still refused its
full approval. The federal government, which has been strongly in favour of Northern Gateway, has six months to accept or reject the board’s recommendations, said NEB spokeswoman Sarah Kiley. “The federal government will make the final decision...they can reject it, replace the conditions or modify them,” she said. Federal Natural Resources Minister Joe
Oliver, who’s accused some anti-pipeline activists of being terrorists, hailed the decision and said final approval will meet stringent criteria. “No project will be approved unless it is safe for Canadians and the environment,” he said. The NEB’s conditions are “tough — but they should be, given everyone’s goal of a safe project and protecting the environment,” said Enbridge CEO Al Monaco. He said the Calgary-based company will redouble its efforts to win over British Columbians and First Nations. “We hope to re-engage in a respectful way...we are open to change in making the project even better.” The Dec. 19 decision merely means the main fight against the pipeline has just began, said Will Horter, executive director of environmental group Dogwood Initiative. “The NEB accepted a bunch of promises — that’s not good enough for the British Columbians,” said Horter. He said only two of 1,161 people who spoke at pipeline hearings in B.C. were in favour of the Enbridge proposal. “People who stand up for oil tankers in B.C. do so at their peril,” said Horter. Opponents have pointed to the 2010 rupture of an Enbridge heavy oil pipeline in Michigan that spilled 840,000 gallons of the product in a Kalamazoo River and is still undergoing cleanup.
NEB recommendation an ‘important step forward’: minister

The provincial government praised the National Energy Board’s recommendation of approval for Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline project on Thursday, Dec. 19, saying the pipeline will “certainly help” with Alberta’s bitumen-bubble woes. The National Energy Board (NEB) Joint Review Panel’s conclusion that the environmental burdens of the project’s construction can be mitigated with no adverse effects is “an important step forward” said Energy Minister Diana McQueen. “New markets mean we will receive higher prices for our resources — creating and supporting more jobs, and generating higher royalties and taxes to help pay for the vital public services like quality
health care and education,” said McQueen. “While today’s decision is an important step toward achieving that goal, there is still much work ahead for Enbridge to satisfy the many conditions set out by the Joint Review Panel as well as meeting B.C.’s five conditions.” On Nov. 5, Alberta and B.C. reached an agreement to move Alberta oil and gas to the west coast provided that projects pass an environmental review, meet world-class standards for spill response on both land and sea, include First Nations consultations, and provide economic benefit for B.C. McQueen said the government will help facilitate the process for Enbridge to meet the conditions but it will be Enbridge’s responsibility to show positive environmental outcomes and conduct consultations with First
Nations. Wildrose energy critic Jason Hale said he was pleased to hear that the pipeline was given the green light. “I am very encouraged to see that the panel was able to cut through the noise, examine the evidence and find that ‘opening Pacific Basin markets is important to the Canadian economy and society,’ and, ‘would bring significant local, regional, and national economic and social

carries be upgraded to at least synthetic crude,” said Mason. According to Enbridge’s estimates, the pipeline will create 228 permanent jobs and about 1,850 construction jobs per year for three years. However, Mason says a single refinery can employ 2,000 people for a period of 30-40 years. The federal cabinet has 180 days to review the NEB’s recommendation before making a final decision.

benefits,’” said Hale. Stepping away from federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair’s firm stance against the pipeline, Alberta NDP leader Brian Mason said the project has the potential to create jobs in Alberta if the oil is refined locally rather than shipped out to China as raw bitumen. “I’m calling today on the Premier to stand up for jobs here in Alberta by requiring that 50 per cent of the product this pipeline

Dealing with the Here’s why French people are rude and Santa Claus is such a jolly elf worst co-workers
KURIAN THARAKAN Special to the Leader
First of all, don’t worry, this isn’t a column about any ethnicity or culture. French people are just as rude or polite as Canadians, Americans, or Venezuelans. Instead, this column is about how your brain works. Your brain is a wonderful computer, and one of the key programs it continuously runs on the terabytes of data it sifts through is ITTT — “if this, then that.” In other words, if this occurs, then that will happen. The problem is that your brain isn’t very good at establishing whether it has a proper statistical sample size to ensure that the correlation it has derived doesn’t result in a false conclusion. This cognitive bias is called illusory correlation, and it can get you into big trouble! In the past few decades, several experiments have been completed at major universities to test this bias. In one study at Brandeis University, 96 white male and female students participated in a study where they were presented with eight fictitious case studies (with an accompanying photograph) of individuals from a mental health center. Three versions of the experiment were run, with each iteration varying either the age, race, or sex of the case
study subject. In each run of the study, one of the demographics was underrepresented to half of the students, and the opposite demographic underrepresented to the other half of the students. For example, half of the students in the race experiment saw two black and six white patients, and half saw six blacks and two whites. The experimenters then randomly assigned Kurian neutral traits Tharakan to each of the Consultant bogus profiles such as “majors in computer science,” “works for a large company,” and “sings in a choir,” as well as undesirable traits such as “doesn’t smile when others say hello” (indicating unsociability) or “doesn’t follow through when assigned a task” (indicating irresponsibility). It’s important to note that the only thing that varied was the profile demographic that the randomly assigned traits were assigned to. The students were then asked to read the profiles, and then rate them on attributes such as popular, unsociable, happy, pessimistic, industrious and irresponsible. The results? In summary,
the young ,white, students who participated in the study rated older, black or opposite sex profiles more negatively when they were infrequent than when they were frequent. Conversely, same gender, race, and age profiles (as the student) were rated more positively even when infrequently represented. Researchers believe that this is often the basis from which negative stereotypes are created. If you have a single encounter with a French citizen who was exceptionally rude to you, it is very easy for your brain to conclude that all French people are this way. After all, your statistical correlation is 100 per cent! French, to you, equals rude. On the flip side, why is our impression that Santa Claus is jolly? Only for one reason: consistency of image. For the past 100 years, Saint Nick has been portrayed in art and advertisement as a jolly fellow who gives people presents. His portrayal is consistently positive! The marketing takeaway? Frequency and consistency is what makes your brand image come alive in the way you intended it to be.

SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – The bad news is that we all wind up with a co-worker we can’t stand sooner or later. The good news is that if you deal with them the right way, your colleague doesn’t have to ruin your career — or even your day. Forbes recently ran a piece on dealing with the worst personality conflicts in the office. Inspired by that article, we bring you the five most annoying co-workers, and how to deal with them.
3. Mr. sunshIne Otherwise known as Eeyore, this co-worker is the person who cannot be appeased, no matter how good the news is. If he gets a raise, he complains about taxes. And when things are really bad, well, count on Mr. Sunshine to make it seem worse. How to deal with him: Avoid him, whenever possible, and tune him out when you can’t. Bad moods are contagious, and you can’t afford to let him sabotage your attitude.
1. Mr. Know-It-All You’re familiar with this guy, in and out of work. If you loved a recent book, he knows the author. If you have an idea, he has a manifesto. At a party, this person is boring. At a meeting, he’s fatal to productivity. How to deal with him: Focus on delivering results — and consider making up an agenda for every meeting you share. “As the saying goes, ‘Strive to be great, but remember to be good,’” Marv Dumon writes at Forbes. “At the end of the day, business results and performance are the only real sources of credibility.”
4. Mr. AssIstAnt (to the) regIonAl MAnAger Ever have a colleague who seems to have received a promotion that only he heard about? The most famous example of this is Dwight on The Office, who spent years inflating his title, responsibilities and power. In real life, it’s more maddening than hilarious, however. How to deal with him: First and foremost, don’t let him get under your skin. Remember that no matter what he thinks he’s not actually the boss. Avoid confrontations in which you remind him, in so many words, that he isn’t the boss — sometimes, just addressing this co-worker’s delusion can reinforce it. Diplomatically refer all questions back to who’s actually in charge.
2. Mr. whAt’s-MIne-Is-Yours Need proof that boundaries are subjective? Go work in an office. Some people just cannot keep their hands off of your things, whether it’s your office supplies, your yogurt or your ideas. How to deal with him: Observe all the conventions that say “this is mine,” whether it’s labeling your food or keeping your favourite office supplies in your desk drawer. And if it comes down to it, don’t be afraid to confront Mr. WMIY if he still goes digging for your things.
5. Mr. sMellY lunch This guy needs no introduction. How to deal with him: If you feel comfortable, ask him not to eat in the common areas. Or consider asking your manager about a “no food at the desk” policy. It’s cleaner, better for people’s digestion, and encourages everyone to take a real lunch break, which is actually better for productivity.
