Bicycles are not the first thing that comes to mind when Alaska’s iconic 1,100 mile Iditarod sled dog race is mentioned. But it did inspire an extreme athlete to ride through one of the planet’s harshest environments for almost three weeks. From that first ride some 15 years ago, the Fat Bike was born, and with it the entirely new winter sport of snow biking. Our northern climate equates to a short cycling season. You can ride indoors on a bike treadmill but it’s not the same as being on the road or trail. Snow biking offers an

alternative, and it hasn’t taken long for a few hardy St. Albertans to take up the challenge. It’s not hard see why Fat bikes are becoming the darlings of the bike world when you see one up close. They look cool and a bit gnarly, like you could ride one up the face of a cliff. The fat tires and wild colours add to the cache and mystique. Now more and more snow bike races are starting to pop up. Everything from twoday endurance races to recreational trail rides. Recently, Andrew Phelps, owner of Cranky’s Bike Shop, created the informal, “Cranky’s Bikeshop Club for St. Albert enthusiasts to share their passion. “It’s just a different way to enjoy cycling, whatever your background is, says Phelps. “You’re outside, you’re

exercising in a season when most of the time you’re stuck indoors. Its’ cool to have something that brings cycling to the entire year, that’s the best part. The challenge of riding a bicycle in winter is literally keeping the rubber on the road or, in this case, the ice and snow. The four-or five-inch- wide tires on a Fat bike inflated to between 7psi and 15psi, provide a more reliable grip on uneven surfaces. The low psi pressure allows the tire to act much like a shock absorber. Although Fat bikes look fat, slow and heavy, they are far from it. The frames are light weight, usually between 24 and 30 lbs, and are specifically built to accommodate the fat tires. The growing popularity of the sport is reflected in the variety of models now available. In fact, many riders are choosing to use their Fat bike year-round. In the summer, riders can venture out where there are no well-defined trails. “Because the tire is so big and so high, you can roll over a lot of stuff. You can go where there are no trails, says Phelps. “A fat bike will kind of motor through things. Cranky’s is holding a demo at the store on December 6, from noon to 3 p.m., which just happens to be Global Fat-Bike Day. If you’ve ever wanted to road test a Fat bike this is your chance. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and discuss gear. The club will be organizing a snow ride in the New Year. The course hasn’t been confirmed but Phelps is hopeful Lois Hole Park will be the venue. A limited number of demo Fat bikes will be available first come first serve, and they will book up fast. In 2015 the Club hopes to partner with the City of St. Albert to develop a more permanent area just for snow bikers of all skill levels. For further information, email Andrew at admin@crankys.ca.

Sarasota Homes hosts pop-up shops GRANT CREE St. Albert Leader
For the past two months, Sarasota Homes hosted retail pop-up shops featuring several local merchants in their open houses. The unique concept was based on an initiative by Kristin Boser, Sarasota Realty’s Associate Broker. She was inspired when visiting a Lexus dealership in Edmonton to attend a baby show. “I thought it would be a good idea for us to do because we’ve got the facilities to host events for small local retailers,” explained Boser. Sarasota Homes started hosting local vendors in October during their weekend open houses. It began when Boser approached a few small business owners to invite them to set up shop for a few hours in one of their new homes. “All the retailers were super excited to participate, and it was a different avenue for them too,” said Boser. Everyone involved marketed the concept on their social media sites, and Sarasota representatives delivered flyers to neighbours to create awareness of the event. “We got a good following on social media and some people came specifically for what they wanted to see,” said Boser. She noted that most of the participating vendors don’t have retail space, so this gave them an opportunity to meet prospective customers. “I thought it would be a really nice way to start Christmas shopping early and get local vendors who don’t have a storefront,” said Boser, adding that most operate in their homes through websites. Emphasizing that all participants are local, Boser said they included businesses ranging from The Olive Shop and Glow
Juice Bar to Sweet Leggings and Shop The Skinny. Maureen Obrigewitch, owner of Souptacular, founded her business in 2001 and is a regular fixture at the St. Albert Farmer’s Market. She was invited to participate in the Sarasota Homes pop-up shop during a weekend in early November. “It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community. It was very well done,” said Obrigewitch. “People were surprised to see little companies in the house. It was a nice addition to having an open house. It was something different.” Souptacular offered soup for visitors to taste as they strolled through the open house. “We wanted to give them an idea of the product and people just loved that aspect.” The pop-up shops proved to be a win-win for Sarasota Homes and the vendors. Noting there was no set-up fee for participating, Boser described the experience as “awesome” because it attracted people who otherwise might not have visited. “It’s nice to come into a place that is not someone’s house so people can tour around and do a little shopping,” she said. Boser said the pop-up shops were beneficial for the participating small businesses. “They were very excited, and everyone did awesome in their sales, which was really nice to see,” said Boser, adding that soon other local vendors approached her asking to be part of it. Sarasota Homes plans to continue the pop-up shops once a month next year. “We sold all of our show homes so we were down to only two by the end,” said Boser, who enjoyed partnering with local businesses. “They all want to participate again, which is awesome, so we will definitely do it again.”

OPINION
WHERE IS THIS?
It is time for more winter fun
I
t might be a difficult thought to process, especially after the freezing week with the abundance of snow we’ve just had, but we need to plan more outside events in our community during the winter months. Good or bad weather, the annual Snowflake Festival in the Perron District will find hundreds if not thousands of families downtown enjoying the variety of activities. Much more was added this year to the festival and it was great to see that this event is building positive growth for the downtown. Our team enjoyed making hundreds of meltin-your-mouth s’mores each year and we have a hard time keeping up. A great problem to have and one we’re okay with. There is no big mystery to solve. Put on a show with a good and unique theme to it, along with some entertainment, and folks will brave our winter elements to enjoy. Some more than others, depending on the severity of the chilliness but still heartening. The good news is that we’re not starting from scratch. If playing some pond hockey while enjoying a beverage or two (even skating up to the bar) is your thing, the Canadian Progress Club has us covered with their now-annual pond-hockey championships. There are activities a plenty at the Family Day Frostival and the Snowflake Festival, as mentioned. The cover of this week’s Leader and accompanying story on page 3 explores another new outdoor opportunity for our city to consider. The annual Winter Fat Bike championships... hosted in St. Albert. Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Annual curling tournaments on the Sturgeon River? They’ve done it before for special events, so why not make it a big annual event? While we’re on the topic, maybe someone could consider grading a half-pipe into the side of Seven Hills. Snowboarding events to host throughout the winter and who knows, if we build it, maybe the 2022 Winter Olympic Snowboarding half-pipe gold medalist hails from St. Albert, Alberta? We have seen it first hand. Winter weather is just a brief and in most cases lousy excuse not to do something. Let’s get chilly and have some fun St. Albert!
Here’s a photo of a building or landmark around St. Albert. Can you figure out where it is?

Help Kinettes serve up Christmas hampers
I
t’s that time of year again and the 48th annual St. Albert Kinettes Christmas Hamper Campaign is underway. Over the last 48 years, the St. Albert Kinettes, with the amazing support of our citizens and local businesses, have delivered over 10,000 Christmas hampers to St. Albert families. Each year, we provide not only a traditional Christmas dinner, but we also strive to give each family two weeks’ worth of groceries, assorted toiletries and 10 to 20 toys for each child in the home. The Kinette motto of “Serving the Community’s Greatest Need” is and has always been the driving force behind this campaign. Each year, we receive hundreds of referrals from

ISSUES BACKGROUND THE VOTE

WHAT’S NEXT
FEEDBACK
Administration will continue to develop the Transportation Master Plan with an emphasis in the next four months (Dec. to Mar.) on compiling public survey results, holding inclusive stakeholder workshops on developing traffic policy, and creating traffic models and simulations.
“It’s great to see what’s on the go for a major master plan in the city. We talked about moving people as safely and efďŹ ciently as possible, and that requires planning.â€?
Administration will begin work on Phase 2 of the LRT Functional Alignment Study, which will examine alternatives to the LRT alignment and look into benefits and costs of the alignment.
“What we should be encouraging is getting an LRT to our borders and not through our community. We need to recognize that this will be a signiďŹ cant burden.â€?
The development of Jensen Lakes Stage 3 will continue with the new land use designation for low and medium density residential and a new school site. Specific designation for the new school site will come later.
It’s always exciting to look at amendments and see our new developments grow out. I’m looking forward to seeing this development in our northwest.

Student bot-battle at NAIT
SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Dozens of high school students had a robot battle at NAIT Saturday. Teens from across Alberta and Saskatchewan took part in the first Edmonton Regional VEX Competition, which saw them put the robots they built using the VEX Robotics Design System into action. Eleven teams faced off in the Skyrise Challenge to see which could score the most points moving cubes. “Students really have a good time with it, they really enjoy it. And from the point of view of their education, it’s a great way to actually learn – for high school students to figure out what they like to do and what they’re good at,” said competition director, Neil Wegner. “There are a number of engineering disciplines related to this. Usually you have a team of people on a robot team – there AD{CS5432398}
is a mechanical person, a programming person, project management type people – a whole bunch of different skill sets can come into play in having a robot team.” Robotics is growing in popularity among high school students. When NAIT held the first provincial VEX challenge four years ago, 18 teams registered. Today, there are 50 teams registered in Alberta. The winners of the provincial competition in February will go to California for the international final. Students pour a lot of work into their machines, but Wegner said the work comes with a great deal of enthusiasm. “Some of the teachers I’ve talked to say their students would live in their robot land if they let them,” he said. A new VEX challenge is created each year that involves the manipulation of objects for points.

LEGACY
Philanthropy - Within your Reach Who hasn’t dreamt of spreading money around to worthy causes, investing in their community and making a real difference in the world? Turns out you don’t have to be a billionaire software tycoon; we all have the same ability to make a difference through philanthropy. Of the $15 billion charitable dollars raised in Canada in 2013, roughly threequarters was contributed by individuals. People like you and me. St. Albert’s Stop Abuse In Families (SAIF) wouldn’t survive to provide the critical services they do without individuals committed to their beliefs. With a program budget of $482,000, SAIF needs to Fundraise $380,000 yearly. With only 30% of their budget covered by Government funding, the remaining 70% is acquired via donations and fundraising. Anthropologist Margaret Mead said; “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. With Mead’s philosophy in mind, SAIF employs innovative techniques such as the new Monthly Giving program to involve larger groups of individuals with smaller pools of resources. The goal is to have 200 people donate $20 a month for a year which translates to a total of $48,000. Already just five donors have raised $4,000. In addition, this type of funding provides predictable, long term revenue SAIF can depend on to anticipate and plan for on-going programs such as counseling or community education.
As with any donation to SAIF, the donator can direct their contribution to specific programs or needs. Monthly Giving has the potential to make a huge impact on the organizations day to day operational costs. “There are different ways people can be philanthropic.â€? states SAIF Executive Director, Doreen Slessor. “A lot of people think being a philanthropist means giving a million dollars in one shot, but monthly giving can create a philanthropist out of anybody. And $20 monthly giving amounts to only 69 cents a day.â€? With Christmas just around the corner SAIF is launching their new “12 Days of Givingâ€? campaign. But this is a program with a difference; they’re not asking‌they’re going to be giving. Simply sign up for the “12 Days of Givingâ€?, running from December 14th to 25th and with the assistance of SAIF’s community partners, you’ll receive a gift in your inbox. It might be free yoga or dance lessons, perhaps a recipe book or a coupon for Eek! tickets. Every day will bring a new surprise! Go to Stopabuse.ca and watch for information coming soon on how you can receive your free Christmas gifts.

The 10 best movie cats

MANY 1 OWNER LEASE RETURNS WITH FACTORY WARRANTY
With Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever airing this holiday season, we look back at your 10 fave film-felines SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Do you want to hear all about the best cats in movies? No? Good. Grumpy Cat doesn’t care about you or your feelings. Grumpy Cat revels in your disappointment and discomfort. Grumpy Cat... has his own Christmas movie. Someone, somewhere, decided it would be a good idea to take Internet sourpuss Grumpy Cat and put him in a made-for-TV movie called Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever, which premiered Saturday on Lifetime. What’s next? Awkward Moment Seal’s Valentine’s Day Blind Date? Antoine Dodson’s Hide Yo Eggs, Hide Yo Chocolate Bunnies Easter? By all accounts from those who have already seen it, Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever is even more odious than “Lifetime movie based on tired Internet meme” might suggest, despite having our Parks & Recreation crush, Aubrey Plaza, providing Grumpy Cat’s voice. But while Grumpy Cat might be tangling with Bill Murray’s Garfield as the worst movie cat of all time, some feline film stars have added immeasurably to their movies. With much effort, we’ve herded our 10 favourite movie cats into one list. 1. THE DUNNES’ CAT – Gone Girl The cat in David Fincher’s tense adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel is significant because, well, he’s the only emotionally stable character in the household of Nick (Ben Affleck) and Amy (Rosamund Pike). When a cat is the least crazy resident of your home, you know you’re in trouble. 2. MR. JINX – Meet the Parents You do not mess with Robert De Niro’s Jack Byrnes. And you especially do not mess with his beloved cat, Mr. Jinx. He may lack outdoor survival skills, but he knows how to use a toilet! Naturally, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) repeatedly runs afoul of Jinxy. But at least he didn’t try to milk the cat. 3. MR. BIGGLESWORTH – Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery Just as Mike Myers’ Dr. Evil is a riff on James Bond villain Ernst Blofeld, Dr. Evil’s hairless Sphynx is the counterpoint to Blofeld’s fluffy Turkish Angora. Mr. Bigglesworth did originally have lots of hair, until one of Dr. Evil’s henchmen (played by Will Ferrell) made a mistake during the cryogenic unfreezing process. Frickin’ idiot. 4. D.C. – That Darn Cat Sometimes we wax nostalgic for the simpler days of Disney’s live-action movies, half of which seemed to star Hayley Mills. Like 1965’s
That Darn Cat, a comedy caper in which the cat is more of a plot device than a character, but integral to the movie. The cat in the 1997 remake was cuter, but that version was about as appealing as a barfed-up hairball. 5. FRITZ – Fritz the Cat Before he directed that trippy Lord of the Rings cartoon adaptation, Ralph Bakshi made a name for himself with the first animated feature film ever to receive an X rating. Fritz is an endlessly horny soul-searching hedonist, the poster cat for the freewheeling early ’70s. 6. HOLLY’S CAT – Breakfast at Tiffany’s Holly Golightly’s unnamed orange cat appears repeatedly in 1961’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, including the famous scene where Holly (Katherine Hepburn) and Paul (George Peppard) are smooching in the rain with the cat squished between them. The fact they didn’t end up covered in bloody lacerations inflicted by a struggling wet cat is movie magic. 7. SI & AM – Lady and the Tramp They are Siamese if you please. But, being cats, they are Siamese if you don’t please. While the sneaky, duplicitous twins Si and Am from Disney’s 1955 animated classic Lady and the Tramp feel vaguely racist by today’s standards, they do perfectly embody the sheer selfish evil that lurks in cats’ hearts. 8. PUSS IN BOOTS – Shrek He is Puss! In boots. Antonio Banderas stole many scenes as the swashbuckling pussykiller in the Shrek series, so much so that he got his own (inferior) spinoff movie. The gags got a bit stretched out after a while, except the one where Puss makes those big, sad eyes to get out of trouble. Awwww. 9. JONES – Alien You could argue that Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror masterpiece Alien wouldn’t have worked without Jones (or Jonesy to his friends), the Nostromo’s resident cat. Need the crew to go off on their own? Send them to look for a cat. Need a character Ripley can talk to after everyone else is dead? Put in the cat. Need a source of easy jump scares? Dammit, it’s just the cat! This time... 10. THE GORFEINS’ CAT – Inside Llewyn Davis The orange tabby – well, technically two orange tabbies – in the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis is a device to help us see the humanity in Llewyn (Oscar Isaac), but also as a metaphor for... something. Llewyn’s desire to escape? His desire for companionship? We’re not sure. Better ask someone smarter. Like the cat.

Drink fresh beer: How to crack the date code on your brew CRYSTAL LUXMORE Special to QMI Agency
No matter how old it is, beer won’t kill you. “But beer is the bread of the beverage world, says Gordon Fuller, brewmaster at Creemore Springs Brewery. “The fresher the beer is, the closer it will taste to how the brewer intended. Over 95% of all beer is best when drunk as fresh as possible. So how do you ensure your favourite beer is in its prime sipping state? Just check the date on the bottle, right? If only it were that easy. Date codes were developed for retailers, not consumers, so just finding the date is a bit like spotting Waldo. The date you see represents the day the beer was packaged—unless it’s stamped “Best Before. Codes vary (depending on the country of production and brewery); some are easy to figure out, others not so much. Locating the packaging date (check the bottle neck, box, or bottom of the can) is only half the journey. Each brewery determines how long their beer can thrive on the shelf, but most don’t include that information on their packaging. While some breweries claim their imported pilsners will still taste best up
to a year after their production date—for most styles I recommend looking for beer that’s been packaged within the last three months to ensure primo flavour. Here’s all you need to know to crack the code on your favourite brews:
Labatt and Molson also throw in product codes, so the date code becomes one long string. To crack these: Start at the beginning and ignore any other letters.
Canadian-Style The most popular and indecipherable Molson Coors, Labatt Breweries, Moosehead and craft brewers, including Mill Street and Side Launch, use this coding. Canadian-style date coding uses a letter to signal a month: A for January, B for February and so on, except for “I which is skipped, because it can be confused with the number “1. The next two numbers are the date of the month that the beer was produced. Following that, most breweries add one or two digits for the year: So either 4 or 14 means 2014. Brewers like
“Best Before / Expiry Date Canadian craft brewers like Muskoka Brewery and Double Trouble Brewing, and most foreign imports, like Pilsner Urquell, Stella and Erdinger, use a “best before date. North American brews usually read: Month/Date/Year while European coding places the date before the month (Day/ Month/Year). High-alcohol and “living ales (ales with yeast that continues to eat up oxygen—beer’s spoiler— in the bottle) have “best before dates of 2 to 10 years into the future. This indicates a beer whose flavours will mature or mellow nicely over time.
THE MOST WONDERFUL L BUYS OF THE YEAR
# $ !% & %'% % (
Julian Code Breweries like Anderson Valley, Schneider Weisse and Lagunitas use the Julian calendar, where the regular year of 365 days is divided into 12 months. A three-digit number represents the day of the year the beer was packaged. On this Hopfenweisse bottle, the first two digits are the year, 2014, and the next number, 150, represents the 150th day of the year of the Julian calendar, which is May 30 in the calendar we most commonly use today.
Production Date This is the most transparent form of date coding—a simple date of packaging in a Month/Day/Year format—used by Steam Whistle, Lake of Bays Brewing Company, Central City and many other craft brewers. This style lets the drinker decide if the beer is in top form. (I’d like to see it adopted by every brewery.)

VASA offers up stocking stuffers for art lovers GLENN COOK St. Albert Leader
The Visual Arts Studio Association (VASA) of St. Albert wants to help you with your Christmas shopping this year. Beginning this past Tuesday and running until Jan. 30, VASA is hosting a cash-and-carry sale of small works by just about all of their member artists — works that art lovers would love to find under the Christmas tree this year. “They’re smaller in size, so they’re
easier to give as gifts,” said VASA vicepresident and exhibitions co-ordinator, Miles Constable. “You don’t have to put down $500 or $1,000. As we say on our invitation, they’re perfect for under the tree or even in a rather large stocking. Given that all VASA artists were invited to participate, the pieces on sale vary widely in mediums and subject matter, Constable said. “It’s just whatever the artist wants to submit for the main gallery...” he said. “We had about 100 paintings submitted,
so it’s going to be a bit of a challenge to see if we can get them all up.” At the same time, VASA is hosting a tribute to late member Pat Wagensveld, marking the one-year anniversary of her passing away last December. The tribute will feature a number of paintings of sunf lowers in the front lobby of the VASA studios, a subject near and dear to Wagensveld’s heart. “Pat really liked doing large, colourful sunf lower paintings. She even had personalities with them,” Constable
Q A
said. “She was a definite driving force (for VASA),” he added. “She had specific ideas of what she wanted VASA to accomplish. We’ve missed her spirit and her personality around here.” The VASA studios are located at 25 Sir Winston Churchill Ave., and are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. An opening reception for this sale and exhibit will be held on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

You might despise wn hrow Christmas dinner, but since you’re thrown into a family tradition of Christmas, you must end; make decisions of whether or not to attend; ot to do making decisions means choosing not i hi giant certain things—it means living with this “what if? Except this doesn’t just pertain to Christmas dinner, it pertains to every situation that you’re in—oh yeah, you’re always in one, remember? When you’re having Christmas dinner, though, with other Dasein, are you together authentically? This is term of Heidegger’s that is not to be confused with “good. Central to Dasein is this radical freedom, this ability to act, but authentically to our own Being. To act inauthentically is essentially to act for the sake of others. But, it also means to treat others as some sort of sake for you; this inauthenticity is obviously something that we’re all familiar with. A picture of authentic eople Dasein, then, is a picture in which people mmon, are devoted to the same thing in common, g. In by virtue of their Dasein’s “choosing. elves essence, people are free for themselves amongst each other. wn The reason for taking the road down mas Heidegger’s philosophy this Christmas ristmas is season might now be apparent. Christmas a tradition into which we’re thrown, one that is all too easy to experience for the sake of me to others. But really, it should be the time be “authentically bound together with your family, friends and acquaintances. That is to say, Christmas dinner isn’t about thee food, ming it’s about the people, Dasein, all coming y, in together because they authentically, orld their very Being, in this turbulent world they’ve been thrown into, want to. We all di dinner C Christmas are the same type of Being, a type of being the table, the plates, the table itself, etc. Those things are beingfull, but they are not aware of their Being, like you or your Auntie. Martin Heidegger, the famous German philosopher, called this type of Being, you and I, Dasein (which is simply the German vernacular for “existence). Our question—and Heidegger’s question—then becomes: what’s the deal with Dasein? Here I will enumerate some qualities that are inextricable from Dasein— qualities that I claim are beautifully profound. My aim, then, is to make this Christmas a happily existential one. Being-in-the-World. That is to say, you ! What exactly, though, is meant by “world? It might be better to understand world as a possible world: Being is always engaged in a world, a particular situation, always. What this means is that we can’t just think about what it means to be a human in isolation— we are never on our own, we are always involved in some sort of situation, always in an experience. This is getting closer to what Heidegger means by “Worldhood. Heidegger doesn’t exactly mean a world as in Earth; he means a world that is more than just a physical one; a world can be a physical one, but it is really something more profound. It is that in which a physical world, for example, is presented. If you can imagine a Being in another dimension, without physical objects, then that being is still in a world, it is still engaged with it. Dasein cannot just leave the world when it rains and come back for the sunshine—you and I cannot be removed from our worlds. But why is Being-in-the-World, this necessity, such a big deal? We are thrown into the world, as Heidegger

A Charlie Brown Christmas to fill the Arden CHRISTOPHER SCHIEMAN St. Albert Leader
Growing up in the San Francisco area, Jerry Granelli never knew what snow was. Since moving to Halifax and earning his Canadian citizenship in 1999, he’s comes to know snow and the cold weather that accompanies it quite well, especially while he’s touring through the country. “I didn’t see snow until I was 20 years old,” Granelli says as he prepares for the first show of this year’s tour in Calgary. The -39 wind chill hasn’t brought down his spirits as he gets ready to play the music he recorded with his friends more than 50 fifty years ago. “The show tonight is sold out!” he exclaims about his performance in Calgary. “The kids we have singing in the choir are really excited, and I get to be like their grandpa or uncle.” For the past couple of years, Granelli has been doing mini-tours across Canada performing the music from the holiday favourite cartoon A Charlie Brown Christmas. 2013 saw Garnelli only stopping off in Ottawa and Halifax to perform the works he recorded with the Vince Guaraldi Trio. This year sees Granelli trekking through Alberta as well, including making a stop in St. Albert on December 16, 2014, at the Arden Theatre. Garnelli says he has a special connection to the Capital Region, frequently playing the
Edmonton Jazz Festival and at Edmonton’s Yardbird Suite jazz club, but he has a special connection with St. Albert. “I often get booked to play in St. Albert at the (LB’s) Country Kitchen,” Granelli explains. “It’s a wonderful, weird connection to this city. The owner there has had me play three times now, and it’s a place where you would never expect to see live jazz.” Performing the score from A Charlie Brown Christmas live gives Granelli great joy simply because of the audience reaction each time he performs it. He says that he will see three generations of families all sitting together enjoying this music that he had so much fun recording when he was younger. “On the first night of last year’s tour, the curtain opened up and I was immediately hit by this immense energy and excitement,” Granelli says. “I sat behind my drum kit and was almost too overwhelmed to play.” The 74-year-old drummer has been busy since working with Vince Guaraldi. He has played with the Denny Zeitlin Trio, performed with jazz piano legend Bill Evans, recorded his own solo albums, and even began establishing art and music programs in Halifax. He says that revisiting the music he recorded with Vince Guaraldi isn’t just for nostalgia’s sake, but is more to honour his friends. “It felt to me like writing something very personal, but I didn’t know how to write it

He’ll be at the Arden Theatre on December 14th to perform music from A Charlie Brown Christmas. and this was the best way to express what I was feeling,” Granelli says. “I remember how much fun we had recording this music. We finished the whole record in about three hours. I remember getting close to [Peanuts creator] Charles M. Schulz and everything just feeling very honest and real.” That feeling of the music, and the holiday special, being so real and honest is why Granelli thinks that it has stood the test of time. More than 50 years later, A Charlie Brown Christmas is still played on almost every channel on TV during the holiday season and its re-released soundtrack is a mainstay in any holiday

collection of music. Granelli also cites Miracle on 34 Street and It’s a Wonderful Life as two holiday movies he thinks have that same level of authenticity that has given A Charlie Brown Christmas its longevity. “Growing up made me want to revisit this music,” Granelli says. “People would find out who I am and make the connection that I played with Vince Guaraldi on A Charlie Brown Christmas and they would express how much that special and the music meant to them. It completely floors me that, so many years later, people still love this music.”

BUSINESS
The new food kids on the block
BARRY BAILEY St. Albert Leader
Two new tenants have taken up residence and opened their doors for business in the Bruin Centre, (formerly the Bruin Inn.) New faces in old spaces, the Vinyl Rock Café and Blue Rare Steak & Bar, are now part of St. Albert’s burgeoning culinary downtown scene. Both bring intriguing menus to the table from completely different angles. Husband and wife team Alex and Ana Calado describe opening the Vinyl Rock Café as both a dream come true and a blessing in disguise. Although they call north Edmonton home, the Calado family have come to St. Albert to work, shop and play for years. Regular visitors to the St. Albert Farmers Market, the Calado’s noticed the space was available on the west end of the Bruin Centre. While doing some on-street “market research”, they discovered an appetite for a family-friendly eatery at the location. After 25 years working in the oil patch, Alex was ready to follow up on a lifelong dream. “We’re trying to capture the small town Portuguese feel like back home,” says Alex. “I use my Mom’s recipes and ingredients, with nothing
processed, and we use local suppliers. So we get simple home-style meals. Mom even cuts up the veggies every day.” A family-run operation that includes the Calados’ two daughters, Amanda and Andrea, the café is a warm and inviting destination. Avo’s (Portuguese for Grandma) recipe for soup is a little bit of homemade heaven on chilly winter’s day. Along with fresh bread from the Portuguese bakery and fresh sliced meat, it’s truly like stopping at Grandma’s house for lunch. Fully licensed, the Vinyl Rock Café is open week days from 7am until 11pm, later on Friday and Saturday nights and 11am to 11pm Sunday. Starting December 5th, the café will feature live entertainment in an open-mike format. Contact Alex at alexzaichkowski@gmail. com for more information or call 780470-0744. Occupying the signature space of the Bruin Centre is the Blue Rare Steak & Bar. After extensive renovations, the restaurant sparkles with brand new carpeting, paint and furniture. Blue Rare
DOLLAR
has rejuvenated this celebrated venue, which holds a special place in the hearts of many St. Albertans, with an aura of sophistication and class. A dramatic half-wall that Manager Pankaj Sor has nicknamed the “China Wall” separates the lounge from the restaurant, providing an effective sound barrier between the two. The lounge features a number of flat-screen TVs for watching sports or serves as a quiet get-together for an after-work beverage. The restaurant serves Sterling Silver Beef, which is among the top 10% of Alberta AAA beef. All the New York and filet steaks are cut in-house. The diverse menu features a unique Bison Filet, in-season Ahi Tuna, lamb, ribs and sea food. A highlight of the lunch menu is burgers made from the trim of filet, ground fresh daily. The Blue Rare Steak & Bar’s chef, with stints in the Cruise ship industry and some of London’s finest restaurants, insists on only fresh ingredients, creating much of the menu from scratch. The lounge and restaurant are available for private functions; contact Pankaj at 780-460-6602 for more information or reservations. The Bruin Centre is located at the corner of Perron and St. Anne Streets; free parking is available at the rear.

It’s Time to Simplify! Dar Schwanbeck Managing Director, NABI
Want to make St. Albert a friendlier place to live, shop and do business? Let’s commit to reducing complexity and red tape.
COMPLEXITY
SIMPLE
DListen carefully to understand
what customers really want and then set out to just meet those expectations, no more, no less. Ask why 5 times; avoid arguing with customers!
DConsider using flowcharts
and checklists to help you see complexity, then eliminate any steps that you can first, consolidate next, and as a last resort, automate.
Drives customers away; turns loyal customers into former customers (e.g. a loyalty program that is difficult to use).
Keeps them coming. Basic customer idea that delivers real value for end-users (e.g. a grocer’s “Make Your Own Coupon” promotion).
Reduces product and process reliability; increases chances of failure (e.g. electronics with way too many features; complicated product return processes; software with too many options; Android-based phones?)
Customers are surprised at how easy it is to use (e.g. hassle free product returns offered by Vortex Optics; donating to the St. Albert Food Bank; Apple Phones).
DHave a real person answer your
Increases costs; more checking required (e.g. all kinds of over-complicated forms, accounting schedules, application forms, warranty processes).
Mutual trust (e.g. Nexus pre-clearance system at Airport).

Pleasantly surprises customers, inflating overall satisfaction.
Business strategy looks like a book report.
Business is driven by a couple of key drivers & values.
Speaks to rules and enforcement: “Our policy is that all broken products must be returned to the manufacturer somewhere in a foreign country.”
Creates memorable stories (e.g. Nordstrom’s, “no questions asked policy;” they’ve taken back stuff they didn’t even sell!).
Leads to tendency to “break the rules or change the rules” to get things done; “safety” may get ignored.
Products and processes are customer and employee friendly. Employees are empowered to satisfy the customer.

Some ideas to help you simplify:
phone! It’s amazing what the human brain can do to add to your business.
and solutions that you offer. Concentrate on your core product market. Find your profit sweet spot at the intersection of passion, strengths and ideal customers.
DTalk to real, end-user customers;
their needs are not nearly as complicated as you would like them to be. Discover what outcomes your customers want to achieve by using your products.
DOffer hassle free returns or
money back guarantees – you deal with the off-shore supplier, don’t expect your your customers to.
DThe real total cost for a product
must include both the costs to own and use. Often we neglect to consider what the “ownership” cost is (e.g. cities do not account for the cost to drivers of road repairs); products, coupons and sales that are easy to use.
DBe bossy with technology, don’t be a slave. Use Geek-free marketing; cut everything not critical.
