The weather may have been chilly, but the generosity of St. Albertans warmed the hearts of local firefighters last week. With temperatures hovering in the –20 C range the whole time, St. Albert Fire Services members spent four days and three nights perched on the roof atop Fire Station No. 2 on Boudreau Road as part of their annual Rooftop Campout fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, finally touching down on terra firma Saturday afternoon. “You get the sympathy donations that way. That kind of furthers our cause, said firefighter and organizer Adam Colameco. “The whole point is to show people that we suffer a little bit, that it’s the least we can do to prove our point for the cause. The weather this year was significantly colder than it was in 2013, when daytime highs hovered around the freezing mark. Colameco said they were able

the coldest. I think it got down to –30 C there when we went to bed, he said. “But we had a great donation on Day 2; we had a great big heater up there. And

knowing what you’re doing it for, focusing on that as opposed to the cold, I think that’s what gets a guy through it. So far, between the campout,

the boot drive at Safeway the weekend before and a few turns as waiters at Eastside Mario’s, firefighters have raised about $45,000, besting their goal of $40,000. “Every year, we think to ourselves, ‘Surely it’s got to come to an end. It’s our fourth year now, and this is surely going to be the year it goes down a bit,’ he said. “But every year, it all seems to come through in the end. And they’re not done yet. Firefighters will continue collecting donations at the Fire and Ice Family Day Festival at Lacombe Lake Park on Monday, and they currently have a silent auction going on their website at www.stalbertfirefighters.com. “We should be really close to $50,000 by the end of it all, Colameco said. “We set ourselves a tight goal this year, he added. “In the past, we made it a little so we didn’t set ourselves up for failure. This year, $40,000 is a big number for us, so to reach that, just within the Rooftop (Campout) is good.

As the City of St. Albert wraps up the 2013 fiscal year, things are right on track, according to a report to city council on Monday. At their Standing Committee on Finance meeting on Monday afternoon, councillors heard from administration that the City should finish the year with a surplus of about $1.25 million — a variance of about one per cent on the approved 2013 budget of $126 million and on track with thirdquarter projections that pegged the surplus at about $1.1 million. “To be within one per cent of a $100 million budget is always easier for council to deal with, Mayor Nolan Crouse said. “And to be on the right side of that is also easier for council to deal with. Manager of financial operations and reporting Brenda Barclay told the committee that most City departments were under budget by four to 24 per cent, but some wound up going over budget. The infrastructure services department, which oversees public works, was over

budget by $1.9 million, mainly due to snow removal costs. “This was the third-most snowfall in the last 50 years, Barclay said. “There were two residential and two collector (snow clearances) versus two collector and one residential clearing in 2012. Nine days a month had snow. Similar high costs were experienced by other municipalities. As well, revenues in the community and protective services department were down due to traffic cameras being out of service and staff vacancies. However, the planning and engineering department collected about $1 million more revenue than expected thanks to more permit fees, specifically for condominium projects and the new Costco warehouse store on St. Albert’s north end. In total, the City’s revenues were $2.17 million higher than forecast, and its expenses were about $900,000 higher than forecast. A more detailed report on the City’s final year-end financial position will come to the Standing Committee on Finance on March 10, which will include recommendations on what to do with the surplus money.

t was a quiet gesture, done without fanfare or an accompanying press release or likely even a lot of advance notice. But it is one of the most significant things the City of St. Albert has done in a long time. On Friday, as athletes from around the world were flying their flags at the Yp >c\ee :ffb opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, another flag began flying over St. Albert Place: a rainbow flag, signifying St. Albert’s solidarity with other Canadian municipalities in recognizing the rights of the LGBT community and condemning the abuses and discrimination that homosexuals are subjected to in Russia. It’s a rare public statement by a normally staid civic government, but a welcome one on an issue that deserves more attention than it gets. Some would rather go farther, though; there were suggestions of boycotting the Games over LGBT rights in Russia, and around the world for that matter. But, as pointed out in a brilliant blog entry by Kathy Benjamin on Cracked.com Saturday, Olympic boycotts don’t work. There has barely been an Olympic Games without a boycott. The most famous were the boycotts of the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow and the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, and neither of those helped either side win the Cold War. Isn’t it better to go over to Russia and beat them at their own Games? Isn’t it better for athletes to show up, dominate the oppressors and use that gigantic stage to further their cause? As Benjamin also wrote, if the U.S. had boycotted the 1936 Games in Berlin, Germany, we would never have seen African-American sprinter Jesse Owens win four gold medals, quite literally right under Adolf Hitler’s nose. In the end, flying an LGBT pride flag over St. Albert Place for the duration of the Sochi Olympics may be more symbolic than anything — it’s not as though Vladimir Putin’s mind will be changed by that one simple act — but it is a powerful symbol nonetheless, one of tolerance, respect and Canadian values. It’s something that can make residents truly proud of the city we live in.

A gift from some local artists is keeping some special kids warm during this chilly winter. Last week, the St. Albert Quilters’ Guild handed over 30 quilts to the Children’s Heart Society, bringing their total donation to 70 quilts over the past year. The quilts are handed out in “comfort bags to young cardiac patients and their families as they come into the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, along with a stuffed animal and information for parents on how to cope with the situation. Children’s Heart Society vice-president Tina Krieger knows full well how comforting a quilt like this can be. Krieger’s 17-year-old daughter recently underwent her seventh open heart surgery, having battled congenitive heart disease since birth. The family relocated to St. Albert from Saskatchewan nine years ago to be closer to the Stollery, and the Children’s Heart Society helped the family cope through a number of those operations. “She still has every one of (the quilts), Krieger said of her daughter. “You’re given the quilt the day you’re in pre-admission, which is the day you sit and wait for hours to be taken down to the surgical room. For my daughter ... hospital linen isn’t the warmest, softest material, and this is a blanket of warmth. She takes it right down to the operating table. Krieger added that the quilts stay with her daughter as she rests in the intensive care unit and later as she is able to get around in a wheelchair. “It hides the hospital robes and keeps her warm, she said. “They’ve always meant the world to her. It’s an absolute stranger that has made her something that give her comfort and warmth and makes her feel loved. Meanwhile, Quilters’ Guild president Liz Henderson said that knowing the quilts will make a difference to young patients and their families is a good feeling. “(Krieger) was saying that even sometimes, when parents are sitting in the room waiting for their children to come back from surgery, they’ll sometimes wrap themselves in the quilt, she said. “It’s just such a comfort. Henderson added that she thinks that comfort comes from the personal touch.

Pharmacists in Alberta will soon be able to offer medication management tools for diabetics and other new services, thanks to a new agreement with the provincial government. On Tuesday, Health Minister Fred Horne announced $55 million to expand pharmacy services in Alberta alongside a new four-year agreement with the Alberta Pharmacists’ Association (APA) and Alberta Blue Cross. The new agreement will come into effect April 1, and will mean pharmacists can now offer customized medication assessments, new medication management tools for diabetics, and counselling for Albertans who wish to quit smoking. “Over the last few years, pharmacists have taken on a larger and more direct role in our health care system. Today pharmacists are

becoming full partners in that system,” said Horne in a news conference. The agreement includes four years of predictable funding for pharmacists, said Horne, as well as a new compensation framework and a new dispensing fee structure that’s “simplified to a single, across-the-board fee regardless of the cost of the drug.” Horne said the dispensing fees are included in the $1.1 billion that Alberta Health spends on drugs annually, alongside the $55 million invested in broadening pharmacy services. “That makes Alberta a top investor in pharmacy services that deliver front-line health care,” he said. A new memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Alberta Health and the APA will “ensure better co-ordination” between pharmacies and

government on public health programs, such as the annual flu shot campaign, said Horne. APA president Ali Damani said it was a “historic day” as the agreement marked the first update to Alberta’s pharmacy agreement since 2003. “This agreement means Albertans can expect a whole lot more at no charge from pharmacists,” said Damani, adding pharmacists will now “be at the table with other health care providers going forward.” Pharmacists currently renew prescriptions, administer injections, provide patient care plan assessments and assess and modify prescriptions based upon individual patient needs.

With the perfect mix of Russian and a desire for travel in her blood, 26-year-old Edmontonian Janelle Lane is one of the few Canadian volunteers at both the Sochi 2014 Olympic and the Paralympic Games. But volunteering does not come cheap. Lane has taken a two-month leave of absence from her job as an Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development videographer and information officer, plus had to pay $2,000 for airfare and insurance to get there and back. Accommodations and meals are supplied. “My Russian needs work, says the multilingual Lane, who found the volunteer process was easy through the Sochi online site.

But being picked as one of 160 Canadian volunteers was a different story. There were several psyche interviews, online testing, as well as both English and French interviews over Skype. In October, she learned she would get the chance to go to one of the largest sporting events in the world. “Once I got the email that said, ‘Welcome to team Sochi,’ it was such a relief. I dropped all my winter plans and booked the flight the next day to get over there. On arrival in Sochi, Lane was assigned to be a press assistant for the Olympics from Feb. 7 to Feb. 23 at the Sanki Sliding Centre, located in Rzhanaya Polyana, Russia, 60 kilometres northeast of Sochi. The venue is where the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton events are

It might not be your typical Valentine’s Day love story, but the St. Albert Theatre Troupe is hoping patrons will make a date to see their latest production. The dinner theatre company is opening its 2014 season this week by putting on Bernard Slade’s Same Time, Next Year, which chronicles two lovers who get away from their spouses and meet up at a hotel in northern California for one day every year. Director Katie Elliott said that the story was chosen as the troupe looks to keep taking on challenging works as they kick off their third full season. “We’ve added a drama that opens just after this show, and as well we took on this one, which is a two-hander,” she said. “It’s a two-act, full-blown show that has just two actors in it. That bring new challenges to us and the actors, and it’s a really good story.” The only two roles in the play are those of lovers Doris, played by Beverly Luckett-Nafe, and George, played by Global Edmonton weatherman Kevin O’Connell. “They’ve been working very hard. It’s a very demanding show to take on, but they’ve been good,” Elliott said. “It’s a completely different way to run rehearsals when there’s just the

two (actors). I do a lot more one-onone work with the actors to add to the rehearsal process.” Another challenge is the passage of time throughout the course of the play. When George and Doris first get together, it’s 1951; by the end of the play, it’s 1975.

È@kËj X cfk fe dp gcXk\# Ylk @Ëd lj\[ kf k_Xk%É BXk`\ <cc`fkk ;`i\Zkfi “The big demand was in costuming,” Elliott said. But that passage of time also allows the audience to see how attitudes changed over that period. “It shows a progression through time, and it shows a lot of the relationships and the power balances that come with the progression of society in North America. ... It really exposes how the power dynamics and relationship dynamics between men and women

and between people in general have changed, and how that affects how they relate to one another,” Elliott said. This is Elliott’s third turn as director for a St. Albert Theatre Troupe show, and she’s balancing those duties with her studies in the communications program at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. “It’s a lot on my plate, but I’m used to that. I somehow seem to thrive on the stress,” she said with a laugh. Same Time, Next Year premiered on Broadway in 1975, and a film adaptation was released in 1978. But Elliott tries not to let other adaptations affect how she directs a play. “I base a lot on my actors. I go off where they are and how they are, and build shows up from there,” she said. “It being done before is great, because people can have a recognition of what the show will be about and draw some attention that way, but I usually try to keep our interpretation independent.” Same Time, Next Year runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 6 p.m. from Feb. 13 to March 1 at the Kinsmen Banquet Centre (47 Riel Dr.). Tickets are $50 each, $45 for seniors (including dinner) and are available through the St. Albert Theatre Troupe’s website at www.stalberttheatre.com, by calling 780-222-0102 or emailing mark@stalberttheatre.com.

Like their amphibious namesakes, the Turtle Island Quartet are slowing down when they come to St. Albert this weekend. The California-based Grammy Awardwinning string quartet will be at the Arden Theatre on Friday to perform a show called The Art of the Groove, where they’ll put their unique spin on songs from artists ranging from Miles Davis and John Coltrane to Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. But they’re not speeding off afterward — instead, they’re sticking around for a matinee show Saturday entitled A String Quartet is Like a Family, a lecture demonstration designed to show kids how they can work together with their families and their peer groups. “In the concert, you’re playing full pieces, and in the lecture demonstration, you’re playing shorter things,” said cellist Mark Summer of the differences between the two shows. “I tend to gear it to the youngest person in the room, because I do a lot of the talking, and so does (violinist) David (Balakrishnan). “We also take questions (in the demonstration), whereas, in a concert, we don’t take questions.” The quartet also includes violinist Mateusz Smoczynski and viola player Benjamin von Gutzeit. Playing two shows in one stop, like they are doing in St. Albert, is fairly common for the group. “Normally, we tend to do children’s shows like that in schools, and we travel all over the world doing that in conjunction with our concerts,” Summer said. “Sometimes there are several in one day — in fact, we’re doing one two weeks later near our hometown. It’s great; sometimes we’re the first string quartet kids have heard.” When it comes to The Art of the Groove, the group has a large repertoire to pick from, from their classical roots to jazz and contemporary music.

Some of our programs, there’s less flexibility ... but with The Art of the Groove, we can literally play anything we want,” he said. While the songs are familiar, it can sometimes take audiences a moment to recognize them when played by a string quartet. But when the light bulbs go off, Summer said that’s a great feeling. “When we play ‘All Along the Watchtower,’ when we finish, every time we play it, the audience goes nuts,” he said. “The first time that happened, it was like,

‘Well yeah, all the stuff we’re playing is pretty cool.’ But that’s the kind of piece, as David says, you hear in the supermarket all the time. It’s very much in everybody’s consciousness.” “We want to be as interesting, as exciting and as cutting-edge and as rhythmically vital as any jazz group that you’ve ever heard,” he added. With Saturday’s A String Quarter is Like a Family show, though, Summer hopes that kids come away with the courage to follow their dreams and a greater understanding of classical music. “What makes the rhythmic pulses in

classical music so different from rock ’n’ roll and jazz and blues? Is it a big deal? Is it a small concept?” he said. “It’s pretty basic, actually. I think we explain it pretty well and kids get it right away. “Also (I hope they get) just how hip and cool classical instruments can be, what you can do with them.” Tickets for Friday’s show are $38 each plus fees and taxes, while tickets for Saturday’s show are $18 each ($15 for children and seniors) plus fees and taxes. Tickets for both shows are available through Ticketmaster and the Arden Theatre box office (780-4591542).

Hugely successful country-pop duo Florida Georgia Line prefer to think of their respective states’ similarities rather than differences. And who can blame Ormond Beach, Fla., native Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard, who hails from Monroe, Ga., given it was their combined chemistry that led to “Cruise”, which is now the biggest selling country digital song of all time. “I don’t know if we’ve ever focused on the differences,” said Hubbard, who is a huge fan of both hip hop and rock, including Toronto rapper Drake and Alberta’s hard rockers Nickelback. “We just kind of came together and focused on everything positive, which seemed to be just about everything. We really do compliment each other well in all aspects of this business — business, music, song writing, studio, dealing with interviews — everything. I think (Florida and Georgia) they have a lot in common to be honest.” Kelley and Hubbard met as students at Nashville’s Belmont University and were eventually signed to Big Machine Records which also represents Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts.

“It took one song to take us all around the world in a year,” said Kelley of the success of “Cruise.” “That’s crazy.” H1 Did you know when you recorded “Cruise” it would become as popular as it has? ?lYYXi[1 We knew we had something special. We knew we liked it but you cannot predict stuff like this. H1 Was there a benchmark moment when you knew “Cruise” had exploded? B\cc\p1 It was the combination of a couple of different things. The awards (including the 2013 American Music Award for single of the year for the remix version featuring Nelly) and seeing the fans and hearing it on the radio and seeing the reaction. That’s what we dreamed of. We moved to Nashville to write songs and like Tyler said, ‘You can’t expect that. You can’t call anything that big to happen.’ That’s why it was so special. At the time that song was written, we didn’t have a publishing deal. H1 The song and the album were overlooked by the 2014 Grammys that just took place. Did that hurt? ?lYYXi[1 Grammys don’t meant a ton to us because they’re not fan-voted so if we’re not there, we’re not there. And if we are, we are — whatever. We care more about the fans and what they have to say, what

they think, more than necessarily what a small group of select industry people care to think. H1 Do you think lightning can strike twice and there will be another “Cruise” in your just-started careers? ?lYYXi[1 It pushes us on working harder and hopefully have multiple “Cruise”s in our career. Every song that we put out seem to be doing pretty well. And every single has gone to No. 1. So, you know, it’s exciting. Hopefully, fingers crossed, not to jinx it, we can continue to write good songs and be living a blessed life, and playing sold-out shows. H1 What prompted the remix version with rapper Nelly? B\cc\p1 We had some pop stations asking for a pop mix or whatever and we just wanted to do a remix. We thought it would be fun. He’s a label mate. Loved his music since we were in high school, maybe middle school. For us, we jumped at it and got the mix back a couple of days later, and we were on the bus and we probably listened to it 100 times ... and then finally we were just skipping the whole song to just get to Nelly’s rap, it was that good to us. We couldn’t wait for the world to hear it. Florida Georgia Line plays Rexall Place in Edmonton on April 15.

Morgan combines stellar cinematography with a solid soundtrack, so you’ll be watching gorgeous aerial panning shots of mountains while listening to songs by Deadmau5, M83 and The Naked and Famous. And while the testosterone-fuelled antics of the snowboarders can feel lame after 80 minutes, there’s a long montage of guys shooting guns, throwing axes and using chainsaws. It helps to get to know the riders individually, because that way we’re invested in their safety during the scary

While her attempt to sue the 2010 Olympic organizers in Vancouver was unsuccessful, the IOC finally relented, and the sport was recognized three years ago. Airing on Netflix.

The study found 73 per cent of children consume caffeine on a given day, although there was a slight decrease among children between the ages of two and 11 between 1999 and 2010. In 1999, soft drinks accounted for the

majority of caffeine intake (62 per cent), but that dropped to 38 per cent by 2010. Instead, coffee increased from 10 per cent to 24 per cent, and energy drinks, which were non-existent in 1999, made up six per cent of caffeine intake.

The study, which appears in Monday’s edition of the journal Pediatrics, says it’s the first to look at the caffeine consumption of children as young as two since energy drinks came onto the market.

Torontonian Greg Wells has gone to geographical extremes to take his body to extremes. Among his most notable feats, he ran the Nanisivik Midnight Sun Marathon on the northern tip of Baffin Island — billed as one of the world’s toughest marathons. He also bicycled from Cairo, Egypt, to Cape Town, South Africa, as part of the four-month, 11,000-km Tour d’Afrique — recognized as the world’s longest and most challenging stage race. But what else would you expect from a University of Toronto prof and Olympic-level coach who practices what he preaches? “I believe that you have to do it yourself in order to talk about it,” Wells tells Keeping Fit by phone. “I can’t be asking Olympic athletes to push themselves into certain zones if I haven’t been there myself.” In his quest to take his body precariously close to its breaking point, however, Wells has gone a little too far on occasion. “I’ve gotten heat stroke myself and I’ve gotten altitude sickness,” says the 42-year-old sports scientist who swam competitively at the international level in his younger years. “I’ve trained at a very high level. I’ve had a really cool life. I’ve been lucky enough to be a good athlete. I’ve had a chance to coach and be a physiologist for Olympians right up to the Olympic gold-medal level.” Of course, Wells, an assistant professor in kinesiology and physical education at the U of T, doesn’t regret taking his body into “the danger zone,” as he refers to it, to figure out how far it can go. “I do it because it’s my world

Perform a performance overhaul. If the blahs have permeated your workplace and you detest going to the office, then it’s time for a workplace revamp. With increased productivity being the business of the day, “we are all being asked to do more with less personally and professionally, says Marilynne Madigan, managing partner at Morneau Shepell Centre (morneaushepell.com). The workplace can zap people’s energy and productivity so you need to own and manage your own happiness. “Increased productivity pressure can lead to lack of collaboration, inappropriate communication, and a decrease in productivity, says Vivian Hitchman of Lifework Coaching. There’s a cost to workplace burnout, with $12 billion in health claims each year, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association. Job dissatisfaction is a major predictor of heart disease as well as overall unhappiness. “In fact, most people under the age of 50 who have had their first heart attack have none of the major physical risk factors for cardiac disease, says stress expert Eli Bay of elibay.com. A bad work environment takes it’s toll over time and can become the catalyst for the physical breakdown,
