Blue and gold are going pink this month at St. Albert Catholic High School. On Tuesday, the school launched its Hawks Have Heart campaign to raise money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, with events planned throughout February to meet their goal of $5,000. The campaign is the brainchild of Evan Holstein, a health and wellness teacher and coach of the senior boys basketball team. He started the fundraiser in honour of his sister-inlaw Amanda, who passed away Jan. 18 at the age of 19, just a few months after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that started in her adrenal glands. “She was a big spirit. She was funloving. She was very humble and family-oriented. She was a really great person, Holstein said. At first, the fundraiser was just going to centre around Holstein’s basketball team and their home tournament on Feb. 14 and 15. “I’ve got a great group of guys. They’re very caring and have got big hearts, he said. “I’ve always had their backs, and this was one of those opportunities where they said, ‘We’ve got your back.’ But, as he organized it, the rest of the school jumped on it. “As things started to grow and ideas (came in), I said, why not? Holstein said. “Our school has been very good when we do fundraisers. Students will have the chance to dye their hair pink to show their support, with a head shave happening at the end of the month. They are also encouraged to wear pink every Wednesday throughout February, as well as on Valentine’s

And it shows unification and team spirit. Holstein has already dyed his hair and his beard pink, and the student who raises the most money during the month will get to shave it off. While he wants the campaign to continue and grow in the future, he said he’s sure Amanda would be proud of the school’s efforts so far. “We found out (about the cancer) back in October, so I kind of had it in the back of my mind that this was something we were going to be doing, but it became a lot more personal, Holstein said. The Skyhawks at St. Albert Catholic High School will be making some improvements to their nest thanks to an announcement from the Alberta government this week. St. Albert MLA Stephen Khan was at SACHS Tuesday morning to announce a modernization project at the school, believed to be worth around $20 million. “St. Albert High is, in and of itself, a great high school. All the province is doing is making sure they keep up the teaching excellence, the student excellence and the administrative excellence,” said Khan, who grew up on Malmo Avenue, just down the street from SACHS, and spent much of his childhood in the school and its fields. The modernization will include modifications to existing space to accommodate a new career technology suite, a new learning technology suite, special needs programming, physical education programming and a new administration suite. “This is going to be touching students throughout the school,” said SACHS co-principal Garret Doll. “It’s not just one area. It’s CTS, it’s the labs, it’s the fitness area. Every student is going to be impacted.”

Crockett said she and the rest of the board were “delighted” with the news. “It’s fantastic news in that it gives even more momentum,” she said, adding that the announcement dovetails nicely with the launch of Shaping Our Future, a recently launched community conversation about future high school programming. The board submitted a request for $21.2 million in upgrades, and although neither Khan nor GSACRD officials have exact cost estimates yet, it is believed the project’s budget is close to what was asked for. The project has been on the board’s wish list since at least 2008. Modernization projects have also recently been announced for W.D. St. Albert RCMP are looking for witnesses to help paint a clearer picture of a single-vehicle collision in the city last week. Police, along with paramedics and St. Albert Fire Services crews, were called to the scene of the crash on McKenney Avenue near Langley Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30. Once there, they found a small two-door car on its roof and a man lying on the ground about five metres away. RCMP believe the car was heading west on McKenney Avenue when it lost control, crossed the median, hit a tree on the boulevard and rolled onto its roof, coming to rest in the eastbound lanes. The man found at the scene was taken to hospital in Edmonton via ground ambulance with undisclosed injuries. RCMP don’t know yet whether speed or alcohol were factors in this crash, so they’re asking any witnesses to come forward with information by calling the local detachment at 780-458-7700.

D@:IFJF=K J:8D Meanwhile, RCMP are also warning of an old scam that has resurfaced in the area. Police say that they recently received a report of a resident receiving a phone call from someone claiming to work for Microsoft, Windows or another software company who tells them that their computer is running slow or has a virus and that he or she can fix it by installing anti-virus software or asking the customer to allow him or her remote access to their computer. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, the programs installed by the third party are more often than not keyloggers or other malicious software, which can be used to capture sensitive data like online banking passwords and identity information. What’s worse, the customer is then asked to pay for the software or repair service via credit card. St. Albert RCMP are reminding people to never give out any personal information over the phone and to report any suspicious calls to the local detachment or to the CAFC at 1-888-495-8581.

et’s be clear: We here at the St. Albert Leader are totally in favour of a francophone junior/senior high school being built at Eldorado Park. The editorial that appeared in this space last week may have given the impression that we are not, but it was the execution of the public Yp >c\ee :ffb consultation process we were voicing our opposition to, not the school or the site. Like many nearby residents have said at the public meetings and in council chambers, students at École Alexandre-Taché deserve better than being crammed into the basement of a nursing home. But unlike what some of those residents say, there simply are no other school sites available in the existing timeframe. The Kingswood site is still in the hands of the developer. The Oakmont site is in the hands of Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools. Neither seems willing to budge. A site in Riverside could be eight or nine years away from being shovel-ready. A site in the Badger lands could be ready a little sooner, but it would still take years — and millions of dollars — before it is serviced. Trying to find another site could result in delays for both the francophone school and a new elementary school for St. Albert Public Schools in Erin Ridge North. Worse, the funding could be pulled altogether. Another major concern of residents is traffic, and rightly so — a study and calming measures are long overdue. But most of the school traffic will happen outside the usual rush hours. And the school could even solve one of the biggest problems in the area. When there are soccer games at Eldorado Park, Erin Ridge Drive is packed with parked cars. But the school comes with at least 57 parking stalls, which should still be open to soccer parents and take that many cars off the street. While we sympathize with residents who live near the park, and we agree the public consultation process was flawed, in the end, this school is absolutely necessary, and there’s nowhere else to build it. It may be a tough pill to swallow now, but in time, the school may be best thing to ever happen to Erin Ridge.

y many standards used by society to measure “community,” St. Albert is a great place to call home. Books have been written about the transformation of the Canadian “community” and the term has grown to encompass the concepts of ethnicity, public service associations, teams and even Facebook pages. However, I believe that the term fundamentally still refers to where we live. In this I am not alone. In a Globe and Mail article, author Siri Agrell discusses the idea of what makes a Canadian community great. Given that St. Albert has been rated as the number one place in Canada to raise a family, I believe our city hits a home run on many of the elements Agrell discusses. Nonetheless, over the years

N\j

9IF;?<8; :`kp ZfleZ`ccfi Dp :`kp I have been on council, many issues have been researched, defined, quantified for the St. Albert context and then acted on — all for the perceived benefit of our community. This action is taken without much fanfare or even public discourse. Other issues, equally conceived for the benefit of our community, have ignited the flames of public passion, galleries have been filled, letters have been written and harsh words spoken, all in hopes of preserving the status quo. Why is this? What causes one issue to be generally well

accepted and others flatly rejected? Could it be that — in a city where our community is defined for many by green spaces, parks, walking trails, artistic endeavours and love for our environment — our sense of community seems violated when external forces are brought to bear that unilaterally change what we have grown to love? Could it be that, in failing to revise the concept of community in light of a proposed new reality — no matter how positive that new reality may be — we have fostered local discontent and opposition to change that causes community conflict? Do we coldly list the positive elements of change without acknowledging what will be lost or allow the community the grief that accompanies that

loss? Whether the issue is new development consuming beloved green space, bylaw changes that impact the freedom for our pets to run free, tree removal programs, bike parks or densification of established neighbourhoods, it is up to council to cast the vision for the new paradigm of community in the context of the proposed change. As council, we espouse the benefits of public engagement, but this engagement needs to transcend information distribution or even design charrettes. Engagement needs to be about community building. Change is hard. Change, however, is inevitable — even in St. Albert — if we hope to build the future where St. Albert continues to be the community we all know and love. Fne\[ Xe[ fg\iXk\[ Yp

While athletes across the world have their eyes set on Sochi, an unlikely Edmontonian is also preparing to make his Olympic debut. Chris Carlson, 32, has been working as a hockey linesman since 1994, where he got his start reffing minor hockey in north Edmonton. For the past 12 years he has been working out of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and part-time with the American Hockey League (AHL). In August, the Archbishop O’Leary high school graduate attended a training camp along with 32 other referees and linesman at the Swiss Olympic headquarters in Magglingen, Switzerland. Put through the wringer, Carlson’s skills as a linesman were tested in a series of mental and physical examinations. After the camp, Carlson returned to Edmonton where he waited until December to hear whether or not he had made the cut. “I was on pins and needles waiting to find out who was going to be selected, said Carlson, who is only one of two Canadian linesman heading to Sochi. “I just consider myself lucky. There are a lot of strong officials who could go over and represent

our country just as well as I’d like to, but at the same time it is a pretty cool feeling. Carlson was on a road trip when he was notified he had been selected. A married man, Carlson couldn’t wait three days to come home and tell his wife the great news — so he broke it to her over the phone. “She was sitting in a Second Cup at the time and she just screamed, laughs Carlson, who leaves for Sochi Friday. “She’s super proud of me. The Yellow Pages employee has worked four previous International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) tournaments in the past, including the World Hockey Championships, the U-18 Hockey Championships, and the World Junior Championships. Carlson will join 14 other linesmen, eight from the IIHF and six from the National Hockey League (NHL). If all things are equal, he hopes to officiate four games but says the amount of games you work is based on how well you do — specifically how well you work with others. “They want people who are able to get along, said Carlson. “We’re only together for only two weeks and we have to have that trust when we’re on the ice. We have to know that the other guy is going to be there if I get bumped off my line, or if the referee’s sight-line gets blocked, he needs to

know that I’m there to see something that happens. Carlson has never worked a Team Canada game in international competition before and he doesn’t expect to work one at the Olympics either. His road to the Olympics didn’t happen over night — rather it’s the culmination of years of hard work. “You have to pay your dues, said Carlson. “When I first got into the Western League my goal was to make it into the playoffs and then when I made the playoffs, my goal was to work the second and third rounds, and so on. “You just hope to grow and push yourself more and more outside of your normal comfort zone. The end goal has always been to work in the National Hockey League (NHL). But with the Olympics — Feb. 7 to Feb. 23 — just days away, the reality and the magnitude of the situation has officially settled in. “The Olympics is the epitome — it’s going to be the best hockey players in the world, it’s toppers for me, said Carlson. Carlson isn’t the only non-athlete from Edmonton heading to Sochi. NorQuest College president Dr. Jodi L. Abbott will be heading to the Olympics as a Canadian figure skating judge.

St. Albert is one of Canada’s leading municipalities in diverting waste from landfills, curbside recycling and organic collection. The strategic direction proposed will continue to increase waste diversion, improve customer service and shoot for the goal of zero waste.

St. Albert Transit (StAT) is in the last year of a threeyear contract to provide conventional and specialized transit services to the City of St. Albert.

Coun. Heron brought forward a motion that city administration prepare a draft hiring policy for council’s consideration, which would address how the City conducts its activities rather than a commitment to specific action or activities and that the policy be broad and over-arching.

This document sets out city council’s priorities for the upcoming year. Coun. Sheena Hughes proposed a total of eight amendments Monday, three of which passed before the vote on the whole document was taken.

The expiration of the existing curbside recycling and organic contracts in June 2014 creates opportunities for the City to expand or provide alternative deliveries for existing and new programs.

As part of the 2014 operating budget, Administration budgeted for an increase in the cost of transit operations. Council voted to direct administration to proceed with negotiations on a contract extension of up to three years with Diversified Transportation Ltd.

The draft policy will be brought back to council for consideration by the July 7 council meeting.

It may be called At Odds, but the artists and their works in the Art Gallery of St. Albert’s newest exhibition are working in perfect harmony. The exhibit opens at the AGSA today (Thursday), featuring the works of Sydney Lancaster, Susan Seright and Claire Uhlick that explore conflicting ideas or notions through various media. “I don’t know Susan well personally and I am acquainted with Claire Uhlick, but I really do admire their work very much,” Lancaster said. “I think there’s a lot of support and a lot of respect in the artistic community in Edmonton and here in St. Albert as well.” Lancaster’s mixed media work focuses mainly on birds’ nests, which she said is a perfect way to explore the concept of home as an ideal versus reality, and how that plays into our sense of security, belonging and identity. “There’s that memory in the back of the brain we all have of home, that nurturing, that nest that helped bring us all into being,” she said. “That’s true and fascinating and really interesting but ... what happens if — as it is for most of us, I think — that nest is not an ideal place? For a lot of people, to one degree or another, that understanding of home can be quite ambiguous, quite fraught.” Lancaster’s work runs the gamut of mediums, from gel-transferred photographs and sculptures to charcoal drawings and even video. “I kind of approach it like having a set of tools to work with,” she said. “Each of the different media offers me a different way of talking about the same kind of idea. It’s like looking at things from different angles.” Meanwhile, Seright’s works focus on the opposing ends of bipolar disorder, which

And instead of going in the garbage dump, they’re being reinvented.” Some of them have hinges, drawes and sliding elements, so she doesn’t mind if gallery patrons get a little hands-on. In the end, though, Seright hopes they come away from the exhibit with “an awakening, a sense of themselves.” For Lancaster, she hopes to give viewers a little bit of room to breathe and to think. “I’m hoping to create contemplative spaces with this work,” she said, “places where people can pause and think in general terms about security and belonging and home, and maybe take away some different ways of looking at their own experience.” At Odds runs at the Art Gallery of St. Albert (19 Perron St.) until March 1.

And as I kind of fell into this career of travel writing and doing TV shows, I’ve traveled everywhere else in the world, but really didn’t know about Canada itself. I’d be constantly meeting people and asking what’s the best thing to do in Brazil, in South Africa, in Croatia. But I live in Canada and I’ve done a few things here, but I honestly didn’t know.

But when you go to a city with 14 million people, you come back and realize, ‘What are we complaining about?’ The traffic here is nothing compared to the traffic in Rio de Janeiro. The kind of stuff people get up on their high horses about is relatively (trivial). A good example is the Sour Toe Cocktail in the Yukon, which is a drink they serve with a severed human toe. It’s so weird. … There’s lot of these kinds of things I wanted to include and paint a snapshot of Canada that most Canadians don’t quite give the credit for.

All signs are pointing to success for SIIINES. The electro-rock band — which includes St. Albert natives and former Social Code members Travis Nesbitt and Morgan Gies, along with DJ Gina Georgio — is releasing its latest four-song EP, Fukushimarama, on Tuesday via iTunes. Advance copies have already been making the rounds to music publications across Canada, and the reviews thus far have been very positive. In fact, working with a publicist in New York, SIIINES is getting press attention all over the world, as far away as Australia. “It’s great to keep releasing songs and everything, but if it doesn’t get exposed and people don’t hear about it, then what are you doing it for? We want people to hear our music,” Nesbitt said. “It’s exactly what we want. It’s great.” All that publicity is boding well for the band’s upcoming tour through club venues in Canada and the United States from March until May.

Although they played a few U.S. gigs with Social Code, Nesbitt said he and Gies have never done a proper tour south of the 49th parallel before, and he’s very excited for it. “It’s going to be pretty exciting to see some different highways, some different scenery,” he said. Compared to the band’s first EP, Diskosno, Nesbitt said the band has really started to find its own voice. “That record (Diskosno) was kind of llike our take on an Usher song. We were taking Top 40 pop and saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be interesting if we did that in our own way?’” he said. “This record, we wanted to get a little deeper with lyrics and get away from what’s happening in in pop music, and do something a little more creative and artistic.” Another point of difference, though, is the

The centre will bring three new exhibitions to Edmonton — Wildlife Rescue, K’NEX: Building Thrill Rides, and Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology — after the wildly popular Harry Potter: The Exhibition wraps up. “Bringing these world-class feature exhibitions to Edmonton allows us to engage audiences and connect them with science and technology in ways that will help our communities grow and learn,” Alan Nursall, president and CEO of

TELUS World of Science Edmonton, said in a statement. “The diverse subject matter of our exhibits cover a breadth of areas we feel will provide a lasting impact on many lives in Alberta.” Wildlife Rescue will use interactive exhibits to teach visitors how animals are rescued around the world and delve into the cutting-edge science involved in rescues. The exhibition will run concurrently with K’NEX: Building Thrill Rides from May 17 to Sept. 1. K’NEX will explore the science, math and technology behind amusement park rides using display models built with

K’NEX toys, including a roller coaster that stands more than 10 feet tall. Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology: The Exhibition will touch down Oct. 11. The 10,000-square-foot multimedia experience will immerse visitors in the world of Indiana Jones with props and costumes, and will also include archaeological artifacts and educational material from National Geographic and the Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. method of distribution. Diskosno was mainly available on cassette, while Fukushimarama will be made available first on iTunes. “We were finding that people are more apt to buy digitally these days,” Nesbitt said with a laugh. “Go figure.” Up until now, all of SIIINES’s releases have been shorter EPs, and Nesbitt doesn’t see a full-length album coming anytime soon. “We like the speed of releasing stuff,” he said. “It’s an old kind of model to hide away in a studio for a year, do a record, then go and tour it for three years. ... Four songs are enough to kind of give people a taste of what we’re doing. We’d rather keep a steady stream of stuff rather than hide away and release something every couple of years.”

The pieces of Chris Pratt’s career are really starting to snap together. From a pro baseball player to a Navy SEAL, from an intergalactic rogue to a dinosaur hunter, Pratt — probably still best known as loveable goof ball Andy Dwyer on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation — is living a Hollywood dream that would be the envy of most 12-year-old kids. Especially right now. After all, the guy is getting paid to play with Lego. Pratt leads an all-star voice cast in The Lego Movie, the first feature film based on the ubiquitous, time-tested plastic construction bricks. Directed and co-written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street), it stars Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman, among many others. Pratt voices Emmet, an ordinary construction worker thrust into extraordinary circumstances when a mysterious woman named Wyldstyle (Banks) tells him he’s the chosen one, prophesized to end the rule of the

sinister Lord Business (Ferrell.) Problem is, Emmet is the kind of guy who follows rules to the literal letter — every day he wakes up, opens his book of instructions and does precisely what’s expected of him. Thinking outside the box is not his strong suit. Pratt’s own relationship with Lego was a little more chaotic, especially as a kid. “I liked to make swords and weapons and whack people with them, he says. “That was my thing. Hit my brother with a Lego sword. So crafting swords won out over building actual Lego models according to the instructions? “By the time my Legos got to me, there were no instructions on them, Pratt says, explaining that jumbled boxes of the plastic bricks were handed down to him from his brothers. Not that it really mattered: “I wasn’t an instructions-following type of kid. But now, as an adult, he’s definitely more inclined to stick to directions. “Like, if I’m putting together Ikea furniture. All it takes is saying, ‘Oh, I can wing it!’ and putting together a dresser for two hours, then realizing you’ve put screws in the wrong way

and you have to take the whole damn thing apart. It’s surprising that Pratt has time to assemble his own furniture in the first place. After getting Hollywood’s attention on Parks and Recreation, recently renewed for its seventh season, Pratt was cast in several small but notable dramatic roles, including an injured first baseman in Moneyball and one of the Navy SEALs who raided Osama bin Laden’s compound in Zero Dark Thirty. After headlining The Lego Movie, in theatres Feb. 7, Pratt will lead a spacefaring team of ne’er-do-wells in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, coming out in August. And in a few months he’ll begin shooting Jurassic World, the fourth instalment in the Jurassic Park series — “Jurassic Park was really kind of my Star Wars, he says — slated for a summer 2015 release. All this, plus the 17-monthold son he has with actress wife Anna Faris. No wonder Pratt relates to Emmet: “He’s just a doofus with extraordinary things happening around him, Pratt says. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I know how to do that. It’s happening in my own life.’

JLE D<;@8 E<NJ J<IM@:<J Æ Huge villain news on the Superman/Batman front. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has announced that Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder’s untitled Man of Steel sequel. Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the new film. “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,â€? Snyder said in a statement. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious

villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions. Eisenberg and Irons join a cast that includes Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. The film also stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

A St. Albert inventor and entrepreneur is hoping an appearance at a major medical equipment trade show last year will pay off. In November, Mariela Wilhelm — who owns and operates Uchi Ltd. based in St. Albert — was in Dusseldorf, Germany, as one of 17 Albertans among the thousands of exhibitors at Medica, a major international medical trade fair. Wilhelm, a former critical care nurse, was at the show not only to promote Uchi’s line of nursing covers and baby carriers, but also to show off the new kangaroo care wrap she invented last year. “The Medica conference is huge. Last year, they had 135,000 visitors,” she said. “It’s overwhelming.” Wilhelm got the chance to go to the trade fair after meeting some Alberta government officials at a breakfast meeting in September. “I had already booked (a neonatal conference in) Miami, but luckily I had not booked my ticket yet, so I was able to get a ticket from here to Miami to Germany and back here,” she said with a laugh. “I was gone for 12 days. It was exhausting.” Kangaroo care is a treatment option for premature babies, where the baby is held against its parent in skin-to-skin contact in an upright position. This

therapy can reduce the mortality rate of premature babies, and while it is critical in developing nations where incubators are in short supply, it is starting to be implemented in developed nations, with Sweden, Germany and Belgium leading the way.

It simplifies tying, and it’s less fabric. … And it works because, when you have a baby in the hospital, the baby has lines connected to him, and this wrap allows access for the monitoring (lines).” Wilhelm started up Uchi Ltd. after her son was born six years ago, starting small with craft

shows at local hospitals. “I’m very knowledgeable with … helping moms with breastfeeding, and I’m a very strong advocate of natural parenting,” she said. “So I opened up a little store from my home. I realized there was a need for someone to help moms choose the right (breast) pump, so I started selling lactation supplies. But my clients asked me to make things, so I started sewing.” The advent of kangaroo care is part of a larger trend that has seen baby wearing gain in popularity across North America over the past decade or so. “In nature, you don’t separate the mom and the baby,” Wilhelm said. “It’s just natural. Now we’re saying, it’s not just a nice thing to do, it’s the right thing to do. … It’s good, it’s nurturing, but it’s nothing new. It comes and goes, but I hope it will stay this time.” For more information on Uchi Ltd. and kangaroo care, visit www.uchimama.net.

The NDP wants a cap on ATM fees and is urging the Conservative government to address the issue in its upcoming budget. Debating the motion in the House of Commons Monday, NDP consumer affairs critic Glenn Thibeault said Canadians are being gouged. He said if the next federal budget does nothing to address ATM fees, it will “show the government’s priorities” that it favours “Bay Street over Main Street.” The NDP motion proposes ATM fees be capped at 50 cents, contending it costs banks roughly 36 cents per transaction. “Canadians pay $420 million each year in these ATM fees and most of that is pure profit,” Thibeault said. “We’re saying the fees should be capped at 50 cents. It’s still a good profit margin for the banks and it saves a good chunk of money for Canadians who are having a hard time making ends meet.”
