:FM<I After the success of Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard, Ian Tomas — a 20-year-old tennis player who trains at Athletes Nation in St. Albert — wants to be the next big name on the Canadian tennis scene, and is travelling to Spain this spring to get a jump start on his pro career. See story, page 3.

,'#0.' That’s how many strokes the longest tennis rally ever recorded was, according to Guinness World Records. The rally occurred on July 20, 2013, between Frank Fuhrmann and Dennis Fuhrmann at Tennisclub Am Lerchenbühl Bayreuth in Bayreuth, Germany. The pair also set the record for most strokes in one hour with 8,156.

Young Canadian phenoms are taking over the tennis world, and Ian Tomas wants to be the next one. Tomas, 20, who lives in Edmonton but trains at Athletes Nation in St. Albert, is heading to Spain this spring to learn from famed tennis coach Galo Blanco, who until last year coached Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic, now the 11th-ranked player in the world. “I’m pretty excited. I want to see what he’s going to do with my game, and hopefully take it to the next level,” Tomas said prior to a training session at Athletes Nation. Aside from the name recognition, Tomas said he was drawn to Blanco’s tennis academy because of its personal nature and the one-onone instruction he’ll get. “There are a lot of different academies in the world, but they’re like a factory system. They’ll put you in a group of eight players and say, ‘Go ahead and try to get better,’” he said. “But with Galo, he’s very personalized. I’ll spend a lot of time with a coach, rather than with players; I think there’s a maximum of two players on the court (at one time) ... and I spend more with my coach.” Plus, he said, the academy will give him a glimpse into what life might be like should he ever decide to turn pro. “I want to learn about the professional life,” he said. “The biggest thing is knowing if it’s for me. It’s a lot of hard work, and I’ve got to be up to it.” With Raonic earning championships and Eugenie Bouchard making a run to the semifinals of the Australian Open earlier this month, tennis is experiencing a resurgence here in Canada. Tomas chalks the success up to better coaching at younger levels. “When I was young, I was playing with racquets bigger than me and balls as heavy as me,” he said. “Now you’ve got modified racquets, and you’ll see kids hitting with slower balls, bigger balls. That really gets all the fundamentals down.”

At first, Tomas was the only member of his family who didn’t play tennis. “They’d drop me off at the swimming pool, and then they’d go play tennis,” he said with a laugh. That all changed one day, though, when he walked to the tennis courts after swimming practice. “My uncle was at the tennis courts ... and he said, ‘Pick up this racquet,’ and I tried hitting a couple of balls,” he said, saying he was hooked after that. The decision to play at a competitive level only came recently, though. “I’m a bit of a late bloomer,” Tomas said. “I didn’t really take tennis too seriously. I played in some national tournaments in Saudi Arabia. ... About three years ago, when I moved here, I

decided I would take tennis seriously.” Normally, Tomas plays out of the Saville Sports Centre on the University of Alberta campus, but he decided to take a year off to train at Athletes Nation to help round out his game, gaining more endurance, strength, agility and athleticism. “I was looking for more in my game,” he said. “I was dealing with a knee injury, and I went to different trainers, and they would just give me a book. At Athletes Nation, they gave me the book, but they showed me the highlighted portions of the book that pertained to me. The attention to detail these guys have is amazing.” Athletes Nation has even marked off a tennis court on an artificial turf surface in their Campbell Park facility. All that effort will hopefully one day pay off in getting Tomas’s game to a higher level, possibly even professional. “Right now, my goal is to play in professional amateur tournaments, which will give me rankings in the world,” he said.

With nearby residents feeling “blindsided by new information and councillors feeling “rushed, a decision on redistricting land in Eldorado Park for a new francophone junior/senior high school was put off Monday evening. St. Albert city council voted 6-1 to postpone first reading of two redistricting bylaws and adjourn the associated public hearing until Feb. 18, to give both themselves and residents of Erin Ridge a chance to fully wrap their heads around changes to plans that were presented by City of St. Albert administration on Monday. “All these letters (received by the City) talk about a lack of confidence. They talk about requests for leadership, and this (postponement) is just a small step to do that, said Coun. Cam MacKay, who put forward the postponement motion. “I hope that, by complying with our policy, we repair some of those fences and show people we’re serious about listening to them and representing them. The bylaws before council would redistrict two parcels of land in Eldorado Park from public park (P1) to public and private service (PS), which would allow the Alberta government to place the school anywhere on the site, instead of on the parcel in the northeast corner that faces Eldorado Drive, which was already zoned PS. “It will provide greater flexibility in locating and configuring the school to ensure a better balance between the school and the park, to ensure the greatest functionality

Bergum also presented Monday some of the site plans that were included in Alberta Infrastructure’s development application, received in late December, which show the school on the northwest corner of the park with frontage along Erin Ridge Drive and a footprint that has grown from 2.99 acres to 3.5 acres. Those changes were spurred on by the findings of a traffic and parking study, Bergum said, which suggested the addition of dedicated bus and car drop-off lanes in front of the school.

tonight, said Erin Ridge resident Sandy Scott. “This is not a minor amendment, to take seven acres of parkland to accommodate a school that is too big. ... We feel like we’ve been lied to. “The way this situation has been handled is an example of most of the negative stereotypes equated with politics, added Kristin Toms. Some, though, said it wasn’t necessarily a surprise, as they had seen the same plan when crews came to collect soil samples across the whole site in September. Other residents reiterated comments about the school adding to traffic congestion and parking problems in the neighbourhood. “Erin Ridge Drive will grind to a halt during peak hours, Don Scott said. All that proposed parking restrictions on Erin Ridge Drive
would do is “drive parking into the cul de sacs. It will drive the parking into the community further and create more problems, added John-Paul Zonneveld. MacKay also had concerns about the public input process so far, saying that there were delays in getting information signs up on the site and that a proper public consultation meeting had not been held. “I just feel that, if council is to have any credibility, it has to show leadership at certain times, and that leadership includes complying with its policies. ... I just feel it’s the right thing to do, he said. Administration contended, however, that an open house on the traffic and parking study held on Dec. 9 was enough to satisfy council’s public consultation policy. In the end, councillors voted in favour of the postponement, saying they didn’t feel comfortable voting on the redistricting in light of the new site plans, which they said they hadn’t seen prior to Monday. “There’s a lot of information that’s come out tonight. ... Frankly, I wouldn’t feel comfortable voting on first reading of this bylaw at this point in time, said Coun. Tim Osborne. The public hearing will resume on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 5 p.m. in council chambers. People who spoke Monday will have the chance to speak again when the hearing resumes, provided they are addressing new information raised in the meantime. The City is also hosting another public consultation meeting on the traffic and parking study tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at King of Kings Lutheran Church.

Organizers of a new film festival in St. Albert are getting ready to roll out the red carpet. The first-ever St. Albert Justice Film Festival hits the silver screens at Next Christian Community — formerly a movie theatre in Village Landing Shopping Centre — with six films showing on Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8. Charlene Zoltenko, a member of the festival’s organizing committee, said the movies that will be shown will all be documentaries that deal with a number of issues that hit close to home. “We’re not getting Hollywood movies; they all have some significance to them, and usually some relation to something in the community, she said.

The Justice Film Festival concept began in the Marda Loop neighbourhood of Calgary in 2006. Since then, it has spread to communities like Red Deer; Bow Valley, Alta.; Fort Macleod, Alta.; Dawson Creek, B.C.; and Sarnia, Ont. “I thought it would be a fun opportunity to bring in a great new event that youth could be part of as well,â€? Zoltenko said of her decision to get involved with the festival. “A lot of this stuff, they’re into and excited about.â€? The movies that will be screened in St. Albert include: t Plastic Paradise; t The Avenue; t Gently Whispering the Circle Back; t Hidden Pictures; t Fresh; and t War Child. There were some other speakers and delegates at the conference from developed Western democracies, but Rathgeber noted that most were from Asia-Pacific nations who are still emerging from under the shadow of communist regimes. In fact, he said one of the most meaningful conversations he had during the trip was with a delegate from Nauru, a tiny island nation in the South Pacific that gained independence in 1968 and has a population of less than 10,000. “There’s something to be learned from each of us, from developing democracies to the so-called mature democracies, which we are (in Canada),” Rathgeber said. But, he said, the biggest conclusion he reached over the course of the three-day conference was that, while Canada’s form of democracy was perfectly suited for the country when it was founded in 1867, it desperately needs to evolve. “Fast forward 147

Canadians have evolved to the point where we can cut ties with our centrist system of government. I think Canadians are fully capable of and fully informed enough to elect a legislature that can wield more power and hold the government to account. That’s a discussion we need to have as we approach our 150th birthday.”

Some Edmontonians may be feeling a bit hoarse after ushering in the new year this weekend. Hundreds of people celebrated the start of the Year of the Horse at City Centre Mall Satuday afternoon as part of the city’s annual Edmonton Chinese New Year celebrations. Edmonton’s Chinese community celebrates its New Year based on the lunar calendar. Its date in relation
to the Gregorian calendar changes every year. Chinese families traditionally celebrate for at least seven days. City Centre Mall was filled with traditional Chinese sights and sounds, dragons, drums, and games. Large crowds gathered around to watch the McNally Triple C Club, who performed a traditional dragon dance. On hand was Mayor Don Iveson, Coun. Ben Henderson, Coun. Scott McKeen, as well as NDP MP Linda
Duncan. All took turns “awakening” the dragon, by ceremoniously painting eyes onto it. “The colour, the f lavour, the vibrancy, it’s so special. It’s a treat. I learn a lot,” McKeen said. “These performances are spectacular. So intricate, so athletic. This city is so diverse. I just want Edmonton to be the most welcoming city. If we’re going to thrive, we have to make sure they feel welcome.”

or the past year or so, St. Albert city council has been trying to put out a fire. But instead of water, all City of St. Albert staff seem to hand them to put out this fire is gasoline. Over that time, there has been a strong perception within the community that Yp >c\ee :ffb the City — and by extension city council — has not been soliciting enough feedback or input from residents on matters of crucial importance. The issue was sparked last year when the City was trying to find a location for a mountain bike skills park, but it exploded on Monday night during a public hearing dealing with rezoning land in Erin Ridge for a francophone junior/senior high school. What really blew up in council’s face on Monday was the assertion of some staff members that an open house held on Dec. 9 to gather input on the traffic and parking impact analysis study for the Eldorado Park school site constituted a public consultation meeting as part of the redistricting of the whole site. This was clearly not the case at that meeting. No one who attended that meeting thought at the time that it had anything to do with redistricting land — that topic was not mentioned at all in the consultant’s presentation and only touched on briefly in the question-and-answer portion, if at all. It was also held two weeks before the City got the development application from the province and knew for sure a rezoning was needed. Most of the residents near Eldorado Park who spoke to city council Monday have accepted, albeit begrudgingly, that a high school will be built there. But almost all of them also spoke of a deepening distrust of city council and administration, and trying to pass off the traffic study meeting as a redistricting meeting won’t help rebuild that trust. In fact, the only way to start rebuilding that trust may be to start the public consultation process for the redistricting over from square one. Get the proper signage, have a proper public meeting, get the right information out and let residents have their say. Otherwise, the City will really be playing with fire.

t is my privilege and honour to serve as chair of the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce for 2014. I assume the chair of a strong and vibrant organization of nearly 900 members with a super staff of seven full- and part-time employees. Our board is represented by a wide crosssection of institutional and business interests in the region. The Chamber continues to put St. Albert on the map with events like the Spring Lifestyle Expo, the outdoor Farmers’ Market, and the Northwest Chambers Conference this March, with delegates from Western Canada and the northwest U.S. converging for three exciting and profitable days of collaboration on business and economic issues. The vision of the Chamber
GXlc
HL8EKQ )'(+ :_XdY\i :_X`i Dp :`kp is to make our community “a thriving business environment.” To that end, we are focusing on three strategic areas: building a vibrant community; serving as a regional hub; and acting as a role model. We have facilitated discussions in those areas through quarterly Big Issue roundtable focus groups, where leaders and innovators have presented their cases in order to move the agenda from “concept” to action. For example, when we had a presentation on the Villeneuve Airport, a regional task force was initiated, which led to the

airport being designated as an alternate landing spot for medevac flights in northern Alberta. We have also had roundtables on development and offsite levies, development of light industrial lands, and temporary foreign workers. Future roundtables will develop policy proposals for the Alberta and Canadian Chambers conferences. There are several files I anticipate will occupy the priorities of our board in 2014. The first is to continue making Villeneuve Airport the first choice of aviators in developing business connections to northern Alberta. With the closure of the City Centre Airport in Edmonton, we are uniquely positioned to benefit from a vibrant regional aviation hub at Villeneuve. The Chamber has been working at

obtaining a consensus of the region’s municipal governments on the importance of a vibrant airport at Villeneuve, and has participated in shaping the vision for the airport with the Edmonton International Airport Authority. Second is the attraction and retention of business in the commercial and light industrial zones in St. Albert and in Sturgeon County. This requires regional collaboration and we want to be the voice of business so that the economic tide of the whole region will rise. Thirdly, we are in the final stages of a three-year process to reshape our board into a governance model of leadership. This will enable our board to make an impact in the strategic focus areas rather than spending time micromanaging the organization. Fne\[ Xe[ fg\iXk\[ Yp

This year’s musical theatre production at Bellerose Composite High School is shaping up to be a real Beauty. Students and teachers at Bellerose are hard at work getting ready for the curtain to go up on their production of Beauty and the Beast at the Arden Theatre from Feb. 11 to 13, and everyone involved is getting excited. “The cast this year is absolutely incredible. Everyone is really bringing their characters to life, said Shaney Borden, a Grade 12 student who is playing Belle. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to start a production before. The anticipation is killing me. Director Mark Samuel said that he is always looking to put on a show that captivates audiences and brings them into a new world. “We had a lot of success with families and little kids, elementary and junior high kids, with last year’s The Wizard of Oz. And our goal here is to expose theatre to our kids in the school and also to the community, Samuel said. “And the best way to do that, for us, is to have family-friendly shows like this one — shows that people may have experienced already, but they get to experience our take on it. Indeed, Beauty and the Beast is a story that audiences know quite well, thanks to the 1991 Disney movie and various other TV and movie adaptations over the years. But Samuel didn’t want any of those sources to influence what Bellerose puts on the stage.
“I just tried to take the writing as is, he said, “and take whatever comes to me, whatever I envisioned from the script itself, and start from the characters, start from the dialogue, start from the descriptions and the interactions between the characters in order to attempt to create something.
Ăˆ@ [feĂ‹k k_`eb @Ă‹m\ \m\i Y\\e jf \oZ`k\[ kf jkXik X gif[lZk`fe Y\]fi\% K_\ Xek`Z`gXk`fe `j b`cc`e^ d\%É J_Xe\p 9fi[\e >iX[\ () jkl[\ek The students on stage are also putting their own spins on their characters, and trying to go in a slightly different direction than Disney. “We focus more on the emotional side of (the character); Disney doesn’t really explore that a whole lot. He’s just kind of angry,â€? said Jordan Poirier, who plays the Beast. “But this one, we’re making him more sad and angry and selfloathing instead of just yelling all the time.â€?
Poirier graduated from Bellerose in June, but said he had so much fun in last year’s production of The Wizard of Oz that he took on the role while studying at NAIT. Meanwhile, Borden played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, but she jumped at the chance to play Belle. “She was always my favourite Disney princess. She’s a brunette (like me), Borden said. “I always loved her growing up. And now that I’m older, I respect her even more. Samuel said the response for auditions was the biggest they had ever had, with more than 50 kids vying for parts. Luckily, though, there were plenty of roles to go around. With intricate costumes, sets, music and lots of other things being prepped for opening night, it’s a lot to handle, but Samuel said he has a fantastic team working with him at Bellerose, including music teacher Karen Labahn, technical theatre teacher Judy Smallwood and fashion studies teacher LuEllen Anderson. “The challenge for me is to stand in the centre of this threering circus of rehearsals, acting, technical stuff — including costumes and makeup, which is its own three-ring circus — and music, Samuel said. “I stand in the centre and try to bring those things up in the same kind of timeframe and go together. Poirier, though, has yet to see exactly what he’s up against. “I’ve only seen the overcoat. I’m not sure what they’ve decided with the makeup, he said. With first semester final exams

Musicians will band together next month to help Little Warriors continue to fight their battles, and one of their gathering spots will be right here in St. Albert. The second annual Edmonton Band-Aid benefit concert will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15, at three venues in the Capital Region, including The Bourbon Room in Campbell Business Park in St. Albert, where local jam host Mark Ammar will be the master of ceremonies. “I’m completely honoured, just because of the bands that are showing up for this,â€? Brent Butt is the first to confess he’s not an actor. He just pretended to be one on TV. And he’ll be pretending again when his feature starring/writing debut No Clue hits theatres in March. “In a lot of ways, I’m the same guy I played in Corner Gas and Hiccups,” the Saskatchewan-born comic says of the fearful amateur detective he plays in No Clue. “I like to say, I act like Bob Hope. You’re going to get that guy. It doesn’t matter if he’s a cowboy or a pirate. “But this was my character in real situations that have real stakes and gravity. I had to be genuinely scared and confused. So it was fun for me to find myself.” It’s not easy to create buzz for a Canadian movie (No Clue was directed by Canuck filmmaker Carl Bessai, and features American co-stars Amy Smart and David Koechner). So Butt took a cue from the rock world to promote it with his first national comedy tour in more than a decade. The Almost A Movie Star tour kicked off Wednesday at Ottawa’s Centrepointe Theatre, and hits 21 more cities through March, including Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre on Feb. 7 and Toronto’s Winter Garden on Feb. 15. “The notion, back to pitching the movie, was that I could go on
the road, the way a band would go on tour to support an album.”

People look at it and see me going back and forth across the country and say, ‘What’re you, an idiot?’ But you have to work with venues’ schedules.” It’ll be a hectic flashback to his early career. “I haven’t done a solid month on the road since 2000,” he says. “In the early days, you’d do a month on the road to live for a month.”
Known as much for “saying things funny” as for saying funny things, Butt forged a career squeezing comedy out of his rural Saskatchewan childhood. These days, he says, his comedy is more in the present. “Where I came from has always been a big part of what I talk about. But I’m 47, and a lot of what I talk about is my life now. I don’t think I’ve ever talked about taxes before. And, y’know, everybody loves taxes.” No Clue, Butt says, “combines three of my favourite genres, mystery, thriller and comedy. People have to laugh at the comedy and be engaged by the drama.” In No Clue, Butt plays Leo, an ad guy, who impulsively pretends to be a detective when a beautiful woman (Smart) walks into his office by mistake looking for her lost brother. Koechner (Anchorman) came on board via the comedian brotherhood. “We’d done some live stuff together, so I contacted him via Twitter and said, ‘I wrote this movie.’ He plays my buddy who’s constantly telling me I’m in over my head. He said, ‘I’d love to do it,’ and sent it down to his agent.” But Butt is most grateful to Bessai. “He knows how to make a film. He’s also able to make $10 look like $100. I remember the first day looking at the rushes. I couldn’t believe how much it looked like a Hollywood movie.”

In honour of this weekend’s biggest event — Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday night — we’ve got a list for you. After you’ve picked up all the imperative items for your football viewing experience — beer, chips, wings and comfortable pants — watch these clips to get pumped up for Sunday’s gridiron battle between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos. ?LCL 8;QFE<ËJ JLG<I 9FNC :FDD<I:@8CJ Getting excited about commercials feels kind of lame, it’s true. But the same thing happens every year at Super Bowl time — there are a handful of amazing ads that your friends are all talking about in the office or on Facebook. Since Canadians can’t view the American commercials in
real time during the game, it might be handy to visit Hulu AdZone. You’ll be able to watch classic Super Bowl commercials from previous years, separated by category, and you can also check out teasers for this year’s ads. This way, you won’t be totally missing out on the Full House reunion for Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt, or on William Shatner’s latest Priceline commercial, where he plays an overprotective father — the kind of dad that climbs the side of a hotel to check in on his daughter and her new beau.

Webcam company EarthCam has put together a time-lapse video, which can be found on YouTube, that documents the construction of the stadium from 2007 to 2010. Take 50 seconds to experience this epic evolution — maybe it’ll make you appreciate the stadium more — before hitting the couch to watch the game.

Ken Buchanan is putting his pedals to the metal to help conquer cancer once again this year. The St. Albert resident is the team lead of special projects at Enbridge, an energy company located in downtown Edmonton, and for the fifth year in a row, he is participating in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, which winds 200 kilometres through the Rocky Mountains over two days this August. But, while the physical challenge of the ride is great, he said the biggest hurdle comes before the riders have even pushed off the starting line. “The biggest challenge is raising the money. Some years, it comes really quickly; people are right there. But other years, you struggle to raise money,” said Buchanan, who has lived in St. Albert since 1991 and worked at Enbridge for 27 years. Riders must raise a minimum of $2,500 to participate in the ride. Buchanan’s fundraising is kicking into high gear next week, as Tuesday, Feb. 4, is World Cancer Day, and is also Epic Impact Day for participants in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, with each rider aiming to collect at least one pledge that day. Buchanan first got involved with the Ride to Conquer Cancer in 2010, after his wife Lisa was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. “I figured, what a good way to get involved and contribute funds back into the cancer program at the (Cross Cancer Institute at the University of Alberta),” he said. Today, though, Lisa is cancer-free despite a few setbacks. But it’s the camaraderie of the ride that keeps him coming back. “It’s networking with people, hearing
other people’s stories,” he said, adding that those stories can get pretty emotional, especially during the overnight campout and when you cross the finish line. The first time out, though, Buchanan was quite literally a poster boy for the ride — he was one of several Enbridge employees chosen by the company to participate in a photo shoot in Vancouver for internal posters promoting the event. Having Enbridge as a sponsor and seeing the support they give to employees who participate — including jerseys and time off — is very encouraging. “We even have a celebrity working at Enbridge in Lori-Ann Meunzer, an Olympic gold medal cyclist,” said Buchanan, who will serve as co-captain for the Edmonton office this year. “We use us as much we can — or as much as she’ll allow us.” Meunzer won gold in the women’s match sprint in track cycling during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. While the ride is still more than six months away, Buchanan says training is pretty much a year-round exercise. “I do spin classes, running and weights. We do a bunch of training rides before the ride,” he said. “This year, the ride is further into the summer, so we get more training rides. “It’s a good way to keep the weight off too,” he added. But when he crosses the finish line, all that hard work is worth it. “Different years have different emotions,” he said. “... I remember the first year I crossed the finish line; I couldn’t believe I did it. That was probably — I wouldn’t say the hardest bike I’ve done, but it was demanding, (especially) on a mountain bike.” For more information on the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, visit www. conquercancer.ca.

JLE D<;@8 E<NJ J<IM@:<J Æ It’s well documented that the first defence against the common cold is washing your hands. But a University of Alberta doctor says a combination of hand washing and zinc supplements could be even more effective. Trials done by Dr. Michael Allan, department of family medicine at the U of A, suggest that children who took 10 or 15 mg of zinc sulfate daily had lower rates of colds and fewer absences
from school. Allan and his co-author, Dr. Bruce Arroll, general practice and primary health care, University of Auckland, New Zealand, add that zinc may also work for adults. Allan notes that the benefits of frequently used remedies in treating the common cold weren’t as beneficial as once thought. Cough medicines showed no benefit in children, but offered slight benefit in adults. Vitamin C and antibiotics showed no benefit
at all. While the new information is promising in the fight against sniffling, coughing and sore throats, the researchers say that tests for the prevention and treatment of colds often produces inconsistent results. “Much more evidence now exists in this area, but many uncertainties remain regarding interventions to prevent and treat the common cold,” write the authors.

JLE D<;@8 E<NJ J<IM@:<J Æ Lowerthan-expected holiday iPhone sales and a weak revenue forecast by Apple Inc renewed fears about Chinese demand and a tepid global market, wiping eight per cent off company stock. This year was to have been Apple Inc’s watershed moment in China, when a long-awaited deal with the nation’s largest carrier was to have propelled it back toward the top ranks of its most crucial market, clawing back ground from rival Samsung Electronics. Instead, the forecast for the March quarter — when Apple is expected to have reaped the fruits of that longawaited deal — raises questions of whether investors had over-estimated that arrangement, and broader concerns about flagging demand for smartphones and tablets in general. “There’s no doubt that shipments (to China Mobile) are lower than almost anybody expected,â€? said Pacific Crest Securities’ Andy Hargreaves. Globally, “the high-end smartphone and tablet markets are saturated, and that’s not going to grow.â€? The world’s most valuable technology company sold a record 51 million iPhones in the quarter, but that was still shy of the 55 million or so that analysts had expected.

But Wall Street had expected even more — $46 billion, on average. The company on Monday recorded sales of $57.6 billion in its December or
fiscal first quarter, versus expectations for about $57.5 billion. Net profit was flat from a year earlier at $13.1 billion, or $14.50 a share, compared to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S estimate of $14.07. “After showing modest signs of improvement, we’re back to a no-growth outlook, said JMP Securities’ Alex Gauna. “It’s something Apple needs to
find an answer to... If it can’t prove that it’s going to be a growth story again, the valuation is too high. Chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer told analysts on a conference call the March-quarter revenue outlook reflected the effects of a strong U.S. dollar, and more balanced levels of demand and supply for iPhones at the start of 2014 than a year earlier, when demand outstripped available inventory. In the December quarter, Apple recorded gross profit margins of 37.9 per cent, roughly in line with expectations. But it was the iPhone sales and revenue outlook shortfall that drew attention. The iPhone maker has been ceding ground to Samsung and other rivals in China, its No. 2 market, but investors hope its tie-up with the country’s dominant mobile carrier will help reverse its fortunes in the world’s largest cellular arena. In the closely watched greater China region, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, revenue jumped 29 per cent from a year earlier to $8.84 billion, bolstered by strong iPad sales and the iPhone’s global launch in September, when China was included among launch countries for the first time.

With the RRSP deadline fast approaching (March 3 for 2014), you might be looking to top up your RRSP. But if you have a spouse or common-law partner, it might make more sense to contribute to a spousal RRSP instead. A spousal RRSP is a plan where you contribute the funds based on your contribution room to an account that is held by your spouse or common-law partner. You get the RRSP deduction for tax purposes, while your spouse keeps the funds. I have a rather cynical friend who refers to a spousal RRSP as prepaid alimony. It’s not hard to figure out what happened in that marriage. This type of plan can make very good sense for a variety of reasons and could be a great fit in your financial plan to maximize your tax deductions and minimize the taxes you will pay in retirement through income splitting. If you and your spouse are in different tax brackets, the spouse with the higher income can contribute to the other’s
spousal RRSP, thereby generating a higher household tax refund while building up the retirement savings for the receiving spouse. It makes good financial sense to balance your incomes while in retirement and planning for the eventual drawdown of your retirement savings should begin well before you need the income. This may involve keeping your RRSP accounts fairly even in value as they grow, particularly if neither of you has a company pension. Since 2007, we have been able to split half of our pension income in retirement, but RRSP income still cannot be split until after reaching the age of 65. If your spouse decides to retire prior to age 65 and would like to hold off taking their CPP, a spousal RRSP will have built up funds to provide for that income. After you turn 71, you are no longer able to contribute to your own RRSP, but if your spouse is younger than you and you have sufficient RRSP contribution room, you can contribute to AD{CS5107335}
their spousal RRSP and still generate an income tax deduction for yourself. It is also a good plan for younger couples who are looking to use their RRSPs for a down-payment on a house. You can use up to $25,000 from your RRSP for the Home Buyers Plan. Once you have saved enough in your own RRSP, if you still have the contribution room, you can contribute to your partner’s spousal RRSP, which is also eligible for this plan, thereby doubling the value of this program for you. You can own both a regular RRSP and a spousal RRSP and they have similar characteristics with one exception: once

contributed to a spousal RRSP, the funds have to stay there for three calendar years. If withdrawn less than three calendar years after being contributed, the funds are taxed back as income to the spouse who contributed them. A spousal RRSP is another tool to have at your disposal as your life unfolds. And just like any other useful tool in the workshop, it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
