With the City continuing to grow, do you see the City of St. Albert investing in community recreational facilities, such as ice surfaces?
Have you seen something another community has or is doing that you would like to see St. Albert consider working towards having?
I have a personal goal for this upcoming year to help ensure the capital 10 year plan is more reflective of the best cost estimates because many of the projects may not reflect the current best estimate. It can be a tendancy to become involved in 1,000 dollar items instead of 5,000,000 items. Secondly, Council needs to deepen its commitment to policy development and in-chambers processes and protocols. I will provide Mayor leadership in this regard in an attempt to be at a Governance level and not at a Management level.
The current projection for another ice surface is 2019 and I am thinking that we may need to advance that by a year. Additionally, all the new neighbourhoods including Kingswood, needs its trails, playgrounds, parks as today we are in the midst of planning, design and construction of some and that has to stay aggressive.
When I visited Caledon Ontario last year, their commitment to crime minimization was through strong community and neighbourhood development. I have some examples that I plan to bring forward for St Albert.
Gilles s Prefontaine aine
In 2014 I have initiated reviews of bylaws, standards and policies that will encourage more sustainable development in our community. In 2015 I look forward to updating the Land Use Bylaw, engineering standards, and environmental policies and reviewing a draft water conversation bylaw.
As any community grows there is a need to build more recreation and cultural facilities, no different than roads, schools and fire halls. They are important assets to a healthy, vibrant community that gets our residents out and involved in their city.
Ottawa has launched an Eco District project. This is a neighbourhood wide focus on building a truly sustainable community which is something, I believe, St. Albert residents and businesses are ready to embrace. We already see smaller examples in St. Albert just not neighbourhood wide.
Cathy Heron ero eron ron
I would like to see a vision for our Employment lands in the west. The industrial zoning is almost three years old and it is time to kickstart development and market this important area as a smart innovative hub.
Yes. St. Albert hasn’t built any major new rec. facility in over ten years yet we continue to grow. The planning needs to start now for more ice and pools etc. We cannot be afraid to invest in our community’s future.
Many municipalities have already successfully implemented online voting. As St. Albert becomes known as a Smart City that encourages the use of technology to make processes more efficient it is time we also must allow online voting.
My goal for the coming year is to stay focused on addressing the issues that make a difference in the lives of residents of our community. We need strong plans to manage growth, maintain an excellent quality of life and ensure that St. Albert is an inclusive community for all.
As a hockey dad with three 6 a.m. practices this month alone, I would certainly love to see another ice surface in St. Albert! In all seriousness though I do think it is important to continue investing in recreational facilities and hopefully we will develop a path forward in short order.
Many communities across Canada and North America have demonstrated creativity with respect to housing forms and types. I would like to see us look for opportunities to encourage the development of a range of housing options that would be attainable for new home buyers.
To use new growth tax dollars to provide much lower tax increases and present options to decrease the utility rates to make it affordable for families of all ages to be able to continue to live in St. Albert.
Whether new or expanded community facilities are built the next few years needs to be weighed with the other needs of the city, and what is affordable within the current city budget.
Weekly garbage and unlimited garbage pickup, including large items. Affordable utility rates. Preservation and expansion of greenspace as a priority.
My overarching goal is to continue to work hard to support good governance based on sound strategic planning that considers the future requirements of our community with the desires of our citizens for amenities and services and then balance these factors in a fiscally prudent manner.
I would certainly like to continue to move forward with building our community. St. Albert will be growing as substantial new housing developments start to build. So, recreational facilities to support this growth will need to be developed accordingly. Failure to do so will not only require our citizens to travel to other communities to meet their recreational needs but also pass on this infrastructure development requirement to future councils.
There are many communities that work collaboratively with neighbouring municipalities to build needed infrastructure and work creatively to draw business and industry to a region to the mutual benefit of all. I believe St. Albert can be a leader both in its relationship with Sturgeon County and through working within the context of the CRB.

The legend returns Snap Shots from the World Juniors
BARRY BAILEY St. Albert Leader
Worthy of the moniker “legend”, QuikCard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week returns to the Capital Region January 9th to 18th with over 10,000 players, coaches, refs and volunteers participating. St. Albert is the single-largest minor hockey association west of Toronto, with 1800 players, and has some 60 teams entered in the tournament. St. Albert has been participating in Minor Hockey Week since it started. This year St. Albert will host 30 games over three days, beginning the evening of Jan. 9th and continuing all day on Jan. 10th and 11th at Kinex and Akinsdale Arenas. All federation teams in the region that have played since November qualify to play in the double knock-out format. The tournament is completely volunteer driven. SAMHA will be providing six-person teams to work each of 76 games. Selling tournament buttons, running the score clock, minding the score sheet and “shift counting” are all part of the drill. “Shift counting” ensures each player on every team gets on the ice to play, supporting the tournament’s basic philosophy that values participation over winning. St. Albert volunteers may even find themselves working Edmonton arena games in order to account for SAMHA’s share of the games they’re responsible for. SAMHA’s referee-in-chief, Joe Becigneul, arranges all the carded officiating crews required for games held in St. Albert. Tournament-wide, some 1,000 young officials will donate their time in support of minor hockey. It’s a great opportunity for young officials to ref their first game or experience being part of a three-person officiating crew. “Participation,” says Becigneul, “may be the best part of the tournament. From the players to the game officials to all the volunteers, we have thousands of people involved in this tournament and the game of hockey.” Be a part of this legendary tournament, purchase a $5 button and come out and cheer on our St. Albert teams on Jan. 9th, 10th or 11th. The finals will be held on Jan. 17-18 at Terwillegar Arena. Mark the dates—St. Albert teams have been well represented in the finals in past years. For a full tournament schedule, visit quikcardminorhockey.com/schedules/
SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – As for the 2015 world junior, here are some of the highs and lows of a truly exhilarating tournament. The teenagers from all 10 represented countries should take a bow for the wonderful theatre they produced in the past two weeks. You deserved it, guys. BEST GOAL, 1a Team USA captain Jack Eichel hardly distinguished himself as much as he would have liked, especially since his American team was punted out of the tournament in the quarterfinal. But his ridiculous wraparound goal against Germany showed why he is projected to be drafted second overall behind Connor McDavid. His reach was so long, he was still standing behind the net when he swept the puck in. BEST GOAL, 1b McDavid put so many moves on Denmark goalie Georg Sorensen during a breakaway in the quarterfinal even the fans in the stands were dizzy. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT Attendance in Montreal. Ticket prices were far too high in a city that has much less corporate backing than Toronto. To have almost 3,000 empty seats for a New Year’s Eve game between McDavid’s Canadians and Eichel’s Americans is unacceptable. BEST PLAYER Max Domi. He scored, he set up his linemates, he blocked shots, he got into the faces of his opponents. No wonder Arizona Coyotes assistant GM Darcy Regier was wearing an omnipresent smile on his face the past week. BEST CELEBRATION After Denmark snapped a 15-game losing skid with its first ever world junior victory -- a 4-3 shootout win over the Swiss -- the euphoric kids held an emotional team cheer in the dressing room. Hard not to pull for these Davids in a tournament full of Goliaths. WORST CELEBRATION After giving Denmark a brief 3-2 lead
in a game it would go on to lose 4-3 to the Czech Republic, Mathias Asperup slid across the ice on one knee while unveiling a moustache painted on his finger and used his other hand to produce what appeared to be a vulgar gesture. His celebration would later be deemed “inappropriate.” CLASSIEST GESTURE After Canada had defeated Slovakia 5-1, the Air Canada Centre crowd disagreed that Slovak goalie Denis Godla was not named his team’s player of the game and began chanting “Goalie, goalie ...” An emotional Godla responded by waving his stick to the crowd. Godla would end up being named tournament MVP. STAR STRUCK, PART 1 Godla was joined on the tournament all-star team by Photo: Sun Media News Services defenceman Josh Morrissey (Canada), defenceman Gustav Forsling (Sweden), forward Connor McDavid (Canada), forward Max Domi (Canada) and forward Sam Reinhart (Canada). STAR STRUCK, PART 2 With Team Canada playing all its preliminary round games in Montreal, the Air Canada Centre fans adopted Swedish forward William Nylander, the Maple Leafs first-round pick in 2014, as its native son. Swedish players joked that the announcement of Nylander’s name for an assist would draw bigger cheers than the name of the player who actually scored the goal. While the Swedes lost the bronze medal game to the Cinderella Slovaks 4-2 on Monday, a disappointed Nylander took time to thank the fans. “They were amazing,” he said. “I can’t wait to play in front of them in the NHL.”

Students DARE to celebrate! St. Albert Leader Staff
Seven St. Albert elementary schools are celebrating their DARE graduates. Each year in partnership with their RCMP officers, the grade 6 students from Grandin, Keenooshayo, Wildrose, Ronald Harvey, Sir Alexander Mackenzie and Neil M Ross Schools complete the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program and showcase the life skills they’ve learned at a graduation ceremony. The DARE program is taught by trained uniformed police officers in 10 weekly lessons that focus on life skills such as problem solving, communication techniques, effective listening skills, bully prevention, stress management and drug awareness. This program is supported by many local organizations, including the St.
Albert school divisions, Rotary, Kinettes, and the St. Albert City mayor and council. “Youth are an important part of the St. Albert community, and the RCMP believes that investing in youth education is a priority in our crime prevention plan,” said Inspector Kevin Murray, the officer in charge of St. Albert RCMP. So far in this school year, approximately 420 grade 6 students have completed the DARE lessons. Elementary schools that have not had their DARE program will start their lessons after Christmas. St. Albert RCMP works diligently to ensure that all grade 6 students in the city receive the DARE Life Skills program and then revisit these topics when the RCMP officers teach a different two-lesson Drug Awareness program to all St. Albert grade 8 students.

from all sources (including Spruce it Up) on MES issues. The number of reports is even higher for the City’s Public Works (PW) department, which usually receives over 10,000 customer service requests each year. Of the 1,144 reports received via Spruce It Up, the top five most reported issues were: • Street issues (potholes, curb damage, etc.): 14 per cent • Parks, landscaping, grass cutting and litter: 13 per cent • Trees: 9 per cent • Street lights / utility boxes: 9 per cent • Sidewalk/trail issues: 8 per cent
Spruce It Up app seems to appeal to a group of residents who previously would not have reported issues to the City and who are now using the app to do so. Council had asked Administration to consider enabling residents to report garbage, recycle and organics pick-up issues, but this has not been undertaken due to the interactive nature of such inquiries, which require conversations between City staff and residents.
Staff in PW and MES have noticed an increase in reporting of issues since April. This increase has been attributed to the new Spruce It Up app, as there has been little or no reduction in reporting of issues via other methods (phone, email and in-person). The

OPINION
WHERE IS THIS?
Up the tuition costs even more
T
he Government of Alberta recently announced that they approved tuition increases in 25 programs to enhance the program quality. In doing so, they said, it would also correct the tuition anomalies between other provinces and Alberta. While the increase is as high as 71% for some programs, it only affects approximately 8% of the full load equivalent (FLE) student positions in all of Campus Alberta. These headline-worthy increases still only represent a small recovery portion of the actual cost of post-secondary education in our province. Most of the cost for post-secondary education is covered by the Alberta government (read: us taxpayers). An example provided showed that it cost approximately $20,000 per year on average for an undergraduate bachelor of arts degree in Alberta. Of that, only about 28% of the tuition ($5,300 per year) is paid by the student. There is little doubt that furthering people’s education is a great investment, both for the individual and the province funding them. That is, assuming they stay in that province afterwards to work. As many graduates leave Alberta, maybe a new alternative could be considered going forward: Increase tuition costs even more. Now before you get really upset about that idea, we’re suggesting the increase only on paper, at least for now. We’re saying that the heavy discounting should be on the back end, not on the front. If you stay and earn your living, thus contributing to Alberta’s economy and community, why not get it all back? Spread the refund over 5 or 10 years so all graduates get a full tax deduction for that original amount. By then, some serious roots would be planted in our community and ensure the fullest return on investment to our province (the one paying the bill). Again, keep this commitment on paper only until the individual decides to leave Alberta and take their higher education elsewhere. We’ve seen many smart grads move away and take their skill set with them. Would this not provide them some incentive to stay in our great province? Of course, educated students who wish to live and work elsewhere are welcome to do so. Just not on our dime.
Here’s a photo of a building or landmark around St. Albert. Can you figure out where it is?

Working to better inform Albertans
S
ince 2012 I have been extremely proud to serve as your MLA and now as the minister of Service Alberta, a department that has a direct impact on people’s lives. As someone who’s worked with software and computers, I see Service Alberta as the interface between Albertans and the day-to-day government services they need. The mandate from Premier Prentice is to modernize that interface so all Albertans have affordable access to high-speed internet, to improve delivery of land titles and registry services, to enhance the government IT systems that public services depend on, and to get better value for government purchasing. A look at 11 trending words of 2014
St. Albert Leader Staff
The folks at Dictionary.com have recently released some of the top trending words for 2014 that were capturing peoples attention for 2014. What made the list? Have you used any of them recently? Check out the list and see what you think. MALEFICENT The most notable spike in interest was in the term maleficent. The word means “doing evil or harm; harmfully malicious.” Unpacking trends is not an exact science, but we attribute the surge to Angelina Jolie and the spring
release of Maleficent, a Disney film about a dark queen who curses Princess Aurora, better known as Sleeping Beauty. OK The sleeper hit of the year was in the small but mighty word OK. This humble term jumped in rank over 7,000 spots. The term gained new relevance in the tech landscape with the unveiling of Google’s voice-command feature last year, which is activated by the phrase “OK Google.” misogynistic Misogynistic climbed 4,000 spots in rank from 2013. A handful of related
terms were trending to a lesser degree, including misogynistand sexism. Events in the news that may have contributed to the interest were the Santa Barbara shooting in May in which seven people were killed by a young man who targeted a sorority house, and the social media campaign #YesAllWomen that emerged shortly thereafter, which explored experiences and perceptions of sexism and gender norms. SOCIOPATH Sociopath is perhaps the most interesting of the trending words for 2014. It broke into our top five most looked up terms, occupying a rank between top-lookup
fixtures metaphor and affect. Interest in the term was high 2013, so the increase in rank was just 40 spots, but the steady and growing interest is noteworthy. Fictional characters with tendencies that some might label sociopathic have been popping up all over TV and film; notable examples this year include Louis Bloom in Nightcrawler, Amy Dunne in Gone Girl, Hannibal Lecter inHannibal, and the Underwoods in House of Cards. CALIPHATE The word caliphate spiked in interest this year, jumping over 17,000 spots in rank. The term was used in a flurry... continued on page 19.

Despite our best efforts, accidents do happen. Whether it’s a fractured wrist from a tumble or whiplash from a motor vehicle accident (MVA) these injuries affect our daily lives in ways we take for granted. Injuries can prevent us from going to work, grocery shopping or leave us unable to brush our own teeth. A split second can lead to weeks or even months of therapy. The goal of physiotherapy is getting the patient back to a functioning level as quickly as possible and ultimately to full recovery. Most patients will notice an improvement within a few days and will bounce back within a couple of weeks. A thorough assessment is the James Dean of Active Physio Works (above) starting point to determine with some of the equipment used to help the best course of action. The rebuild strength. Strength is the “bread and butter “of the rehab process. Strengthening the affected area will help prevent a reoccurrence of the problem that brought you there in the first place, allowing you to return to work or your sporting activity as quickly and safely as possible. Avoiding a chronic condition is paramount. By wearing your seat belt, properly adjusting the headrest on your car set, allowing enough time to reach your destination, even scraping your car windows are good habits to help avoid MVA’s in the first place or reduce the severity of your injuries. Research shows the more active lifestyle you lead, the healthier and fitter you will stay during your lifetime. A general strength and stretching program can help prevent injuries or dramatically reduce recovery time.

Ring in 2015 with lifelong learning St. Albert Leader Staff
The start of a new year provides a wonderful excuse to get together with friends and family and brush up on your literacy skills. Ring in 2015 together with these lifelong learning tips: Aim high. Gather your family together and have everybody write down at least three New Year’s resolutions. When everyone has finished, take turns reading your resolutions out loud and discuss ways you could help each other to achieve them. Read together. Start a book club with friends and family! Pick a new book to read as a group, or re-read one of your old favourites. No matter what, don’t forget to discuss the book when everyone is done. It will help improve reading comprehension and vocabulary. Challenge your math. With a partner, take a deck of cards and place them
face-down on the ground. Starting with two cards each, see who can add the numbers on their cards the fastest. Keep going and see how many cards you both can do! Being able to do simple math on the go will come in handy when it comes to calculating tips, estimating interest and figuring out your change. Dream up a vacation. Just because the holidays are over doesn’t mean you can’t still get away. Work together as a family to plan your dream vacation! Begin with an imaginary budget and see how many places you can go, or activities you can do, while staying within your allotted expenses. Get involved. Join schools, libraries, families and literacy organizations across Canada on January 27th and celebrate Family Literacy Day! Visit www.FamilyLiteracyDay.ca or follow @ abclifeliteracy on Twitter to find out how you can get involved.
Celebrate Family Literacy Day on January 25 at the St. Albert Public Library Join the giant game of family Scrabble from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Drop in to add your 5-plus-letter word to our mega, open Scrabble board and score a triple for family literacy and fun. You can also enter to win a prize basket from STAR Literacy! And don’t forget to sign up for the Family Literacy Day puppet show, The Snow Queen with the Cold, Cold Heart, featuring puppeteer Joan Holben of Puppet Palooza. It will take place from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Visit www.sapl.ab.ca for more information or to register.

Words we searched in 2014 continued from page 14. CALIPHATE ...of news stories in June, when ISIS declared itself a caliphate and shortened its name to The Islamic State. We define caliphate as “the rank, jurisdiction, or government of a caliph,” a caliph being a spiritual leader of Islam. EBOLA In 2014, an outbreak of Ebola in West Africa captured the world’s attention. The interest was reflected in our data; the word Ebolaclimbed in rank by over 40,000 spots ASPHYXIATION The word asphyxiation jumped up over 9,800
spots this year, with the verb asphyxiate up 4,606 spots. The surge may be related to the death of Eric Garner at the hands of a police officer in New York in July. Asphyxiation is defined as “the act of causing (someone) to die or lose consciousness by impairing normal breathing.” ELEMENTARY The word elementary was jumped over 5,000 spots this year. We’re not entirely sure why, but there does seem to be a case of Sherlock fever seizing television audiences right now; not one but two hit shows are currently on the air chronicling the modern-day adventures
of the legendary detective that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote into existence in the 1880s: Sherlock on BBC and Elementary on CBS. ANACONDA This term was trending to a lesser degree than some of the other terms on this list, but it did rise in rank over 15,500 spots. Nicki Minaj’s single of the same name was released in August and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 list. REDSKIN The word redskin saw a modest bump in rank this year, climbing 10,132 spots from last year.

Q Vacation this year…. Heading to? A Well after golfing at a castle in Ireland and visiting Macho Pichu in Peru, it is tough to match those. Owning your own business I find sometimes I pick my time off and then find a place in the world to visit during the time I picked. Kinda like throwing a dart at the map, but as long as it involves golfing and wine, I am good to go.
Q You’re singing out loud in your car, what are you singing?
A Janis Joplin, ACDC, and the now favourite is Take me to Church by Hozier.
Q Best thing about my job: A The people of course, you become so personal with almost every woman from their hardships, accomplishments and health issues. We work one on one and the things you learn from each of these women is absolutely amazing. When you have been in business over 18 years, that’s a lot of stories you hear and a lot of information sharing.
The word was in the news throughout the year in the context of professional football. In June, the US Patent and Trademark Office cancelled trademark protections for the Washington Redskins on the grounds that the term redskin is disparaging to Native Americans. TINDER We define tinder as “any dry substance that readily takes fire from a spark,” but we suspect curiosity in this term was piqued thanks to the dating app of the same name that was making headlines this year. Tinder was up by nearly 3,500 spots in rank compared to last year.

There are many things that set us apart but I am not one that likes to advertise it all, I believe just be true to your passion and humble to your customers.
Q Favourite thing about St Albert? A I can work, support, raise my children live all in one community that I think strives to give it’s city a safe and beautiful place to be.
Q What’s the one problem clients come to you most often with?
A Well that’s obvious – ill fitting bras! We go AA Cup to N Cup – so they all usually fit in that category.
Q What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
A Really listen to your customers and don’t forget yourself. Work hard, play hard.
Q What’s the best way you’ve found to keep a balance between work and family life?
Robin Molyneaux, owner Midnight Magic Lingerie mama bear so I don’t believe in days of the week or clocks. If I want to do something with the family I will and then I will get up at all kinds of hours and work, or stay late at the store, or combine work and social by having a glass of wine while with suppliers, I love to work and play at the same time, You just do what feels natural.
Q How messy is your desk/workspace? A Yikes for a Virgo – I am very messy as I always have so many tasks going and my office is small and the dumping ground for all projects. 4-5 computers on my desk. You’d think I was a day trader.
Q What’s your goal for your business over the next 12 months?
A That is a good one – with having one of the worst past years for technical issues (hacks to most of my systems – [never any customer info though we keep that tight]) It will involve installing everything new and tying them all together to work in sync with both the store and our customers. Growing and expanding is also on the list.
Q Any advice you can give St. Albert residents, regarding your industry?
A Come shop here and try a true personal experience with our very knowledgeable, accommodating and helpful staff.
Q Do you have any hidden talents? A Yes but I don’t usually talk too much about it. I have
been practicing astrology for over 20 years and have done many events giving tarot readings. I love metaphysical teachings and learning how every individual is so unique.
A For me it has been family
Q What’s the one thing you never leave home without? A My cell phone and my daytimer. I like things both
first and foremost, I am a

Home prices hit new heights SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – The price of the average single-family home in Edmonton is the highest it’s ever been, thanks in part to luxury home sales. The Realtors Association of Edmonton released its year-ends numbers for the Edmonton Multiple Listing Service, and found a 9.8% increase in sales of single-family detached homes, with the average price rising to $432,713. Greg Steele, the outgoing president, said multi-million dollar homes were being snatched up like never before. “There were 147 million-dollar plus properties that sold in 2014, compared to only 54 five years ago and 113 in 2013,” Steele said. He compared the luxury market here to Calgary, where there were 770 multi-million sales. Steele was forecasting a three- to fourper-cent increase in sale price, but it was up 5.2% from $367,228. The previous record -- $425,000 set in May 2007 -- was broken in March and peaked in November 2014, with the single-family price record of $442,884 for the Edmonton area. Single-family homes under $450,000
made up 78% of the market. Condos peaked at $262,273 in August. Steele, who is a member of several real estate boards, added that he’s heard some condo projects have lagged behind due to infrastructure, such as power or gas, not being available by the time keys are handed over. There were 18,991 sales in 2014, up more than 11% from the 17,077
sales in 2013, which Steele said is due in large part to inter-province immigration. December home prices and sales were down, as is normal, with the average residential property price dropping 3.3 per cent. The number of sales dropped from 1,239 in November to 770 in December. “This is a normal seasonal f luctuation we see at this time of
year,” Steele said. Homes sat on the market for an average of 47 days, the lowest in seven years. Steele said he expects inventory to rise once people get ready for the spring market. The new president, Geneva Tetreault, will give her forecast for 2015 real estate on Wednesday, January 7.

Oil selloff triggers biggest TSX drop in 20 months SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Canada’s main stock index recorded its biggest single-day percentage drop in about 20 months, tumbling nearly 2.5 percent on Monday, as a deepening selloff in oil prices hit shares of energy companies. Nine of the 10 main sectors on the Toronto equity index were trading in the red. The benchmark, which managed to record a modest gain in 2014, has been held back by the energy group. The energy sector shed 6.5 percent in the session and has lost about a third of its value in the last six months. Oil prices plunged to a 5-1/2-year low on
persistent concerns about oversupply. Investors are trying to assess the impact of the recent pullback on both the economy and equity markets. “The question is, what does this relentless decline in crude oil tell us about the state of the global economy? The impact on oil-exporting countries such as Canada is quite substantial,” said Elvis Picardo, strategist at Global Securities. “It’s a case where oil is breaking through one downside support level after another. At this point, it’s ‘sell the energy producers first and worry about the implications later’,” he said.

Picardo said his clients are looking for opportunities in sectors other than energy. “The core premise continues to be that 2015 will be a down year for the TSX.” The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index closed down 360.95 points, or 2.45 percent, at 14,392.70, its biggest drop since April 2013. Nine of the 10 main sectors on the index were in the red. Canadian Natural Resources Ltd led the decline among energy shares, diving 6.9 percent to C$33.80. Suncor Energy Inc gave back 4.4 percent to C$35.72. MEG Energy Corp plummeted 22.2

percent to C$16.02, and Baytex Energy dived 12.5 percent to C$17.29. Weaker copper prices, which were down 1.8 percent, pulled mining stocks lower. First Quantum Minerals Ltd declined 7.5 percent to C$15.85, and Teck Resources Ltd lost 3.5 percent to C$15.57. The financial sector fell 2.1 percent. Toronto Dominion Bank was down 2.3 percent at C$53.94. But the weakness in equity markets helped boost appetite for bullion, which boosted the gold-mining sector. Eldorado Gold Corp jumped 4.8 percent to C$7.89.

Top 5 ways to take your business from good to great in 2015 BRITTANY KUSTRA Special to the Leader
Was 2014 a good year for your business? If you were in a position of having enough clients and a cohesive team, you would probably consider it to be a pretty good year. But author and business consultant Jim Collins argues that we continue to remain satisfied with good, when we could really be striving for greatness. Could 2015 be your year of greatness? Here’s a quick list of ways to go from good to great: Network, network, network. You might have enough sales now, but you won’t be able to sustain those numbers forever – that is, unless you continuously increase your network. Find new leads before your current crowd becomes tapped out by your sales pitch. Sell, sell, sell. When you start increasing your network, you start increase your sales opportunities. How can you utilize these new opportunities, and take them from LinkedIn connections to customers? Brush up on your sales skills with a workshop or course. Become an expert. Set aside 20 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour per day to read about your industry, stay on top of trends, and find a new fact. If you dedicated yourself to this new routine, you’ll quickly find yourself able to speak more confidently about your area, and people will be looking to you for advice. Revise your strategy. Your old strategy has gotten you this far, but it may not take you any farther. Spend a day (or a week) revisiting your company’s mission, value, and goals. Talk to your customer. After all, isn’t your customer the most important part of all of this? Include key partners and customers as part of your strategy session to make sure that what you’re selling still matches up with what they want.
