When applying to colleges, admissions officers usually look at GPA, teacher recommendations and college essays, as well as extracurricular activities. A primary factor in college acceptance comes down to the number of students colleges can admit each year. According to U.S. News and World Report, admissions offices have to leave open certain spots for specific categories of students. This includes ensuring a mix of genders, in-state and out of state, as well as academically diverse students.
