letter from the

EDITOR

Dear friends, When we made the decision to give Somerset Studio a bit of a new look, we were admittedly nervous. As the clichĂŠ goes, why mess with a good thing? We were happy with the product we were putting out every other month, but we also know there is always room for improvement. So, when we finished uploading all of our files to our printer, we were excited, but then the inevitable doubt crept in. What if no one liked it? What if the changes we made were unwelcomed? It sounds odd to hear an editorial team say they felt vulnerable, and yet we did. This made me think of all of the artists out there who nervously hit the “postâ€? button while sharing a picture of some new work or packing up a submission to send in. We know that no matter how proud you may be of your work, it’s normal for a little self-doubt to pop up because that’s human nature. Your work is a part of who you are, and so when you share it, you’re sharing yourself. I think that a little of myself is reflected in our magazines. We spend so many hours on each one. For several weeks we live and breathe each issue, and then we send it off into the world, hoping you like it as much as we do. 4

s *5,9 !5'534

I don’t know if I’ve ever said thank you to those who write us to let us know what they think of each issue. Taking the time to let us know you’re reading our work means a lot to us. The praises are always nice, but we do appreciate those who approach us with constructive criticism as well because, as I mentioned before, we know there is always room for improvement. And to each artist who bravely sends their work to us, I recognize how hard that can be and how vulnerable it can make you feel. I’ll never be able to properly express the extent of my gratitude for the role you play in making Somerset Studio the magazine it is. With gratitude,

I had to drop you a note to tell you how incredible the May/June Somerset Studio is. I LOVE the new design! I have to admit I got anxious when I read you were updating the magazine. I always wonder why fix what isn’t broken. But I need to remind myself every time you have done this just get better and better. You always know when it is time to refreshen things and you keep your pulse on what is trending so the issues stay new, fresh, and exciting. I particularly like that each article inspires its own design and format. Simply brilliant. Incorporating parts of the projects into the article designs themselves is simply groundbreaking. Each article has its own look and feel. I also really like your personal handwritten commentaries. That really lets us know what you found so intriguing about the projects. But what I really LOVE is the new interactive page with creative prompts. Brilliant again! May I suggest more prompt pages!

I had to write a wee note to say the latest issue of Somerset Studio is stunning! I am loving the changes made — a wonderful balance of enough changes to make the magazine continue to feel fresh and relevant and yet not too many changes where us readers wonder what has happened to our beloved Somerset Studio. Such a clever idea of annotations to particular projects, it definitely focuses attention to areas we might well overlook. The layout of detail photographs is so crisp, again, for readers, it brings our eye into the project. I have a routine, when I first receive the magazine of looking through each page but not reading the articles, I might do this for a couple of days and then I will settle down to read the articles which I like to savor, I never rush my way though any Stampington magazines. This time, I was aware there was the usual feeling of being inspired but there was also something else, it was as though the changes were palpable, injecting me with my own sense of feeling revived, in a creative way. I am bowled over with the presentation of my two projects, the clarity of the fabric collage, clearly showing the layers I incorporated and as for the “Pocketful of Affirmations feature, the photography is breathtaking — another of those moments where I have to ask myself “Is this my project? Thank you for having me be a small part of this amazing issue and to Johanna and Sara for once again, sprinkling their photographic artistry onto my projects.

I like to add more stitching to the cover itself (vertical lines or Xs). This helps the cover stay even more firmly in place and adds another layer of texture.

@

If you don’t like using sewing machines, you can glue your collaged cover to the notebook instead of sewing it on. If the cover is slick/very glossy, lightly sand it for a better gluing surface.

@

Be sure to pick notebooks with thin cardboard covers. The cover has to be able to open totally flat without damaging the book so that you can feed it under a sewing machine and sew your collage to the cover. Also check to make sure that the pages inside were sewn together and not just glued since this type of spine holds up the best.

while back I took an online class with Dina Wakley where she taught us a valuable lesson on white space and how to not stress the small stuff when it comes to creating. Since then I look at my creative world just a little bit differently. I see the white in everything and when creating, I no longer see the need to cover every inch of my work with paint. The bottom layers of these pieces were inspired by that very powerful lesson. I created them in pure play and with an ease that has now become part of my creative ritual. Naturally, I had to make them my own, so I added one of my favorite mediums: resin. f

TIPS @

Using your own photography in your artwork makes it more personal and also eliminates any possible copyright issues.

@

Use spray mount sparingly; a light coat will hold tea bag in place and will prevent damage to your printer.

@

Use the spray mount outside or in a well-ventilated area. Lay the tea bag on a larger disposable substrate (newspaper, large plastic bag, etc.), so the overspray won’t make your work surface or other surrounding items sticky.

You can vary the color of your tea dye bath by simply increasing the number of tea bags and soaking the material longer.

@

Free-motion stitching may take some practice particularly on thin tea bags. I suggest having extra tea bags for practice. I also attached a piece of sturdy canvas underneath the tea bag for better control while stitching and trimmed the excess away from the tea bag afterward.

Sanding and using gesso on the tin will allow other materials to adhere.

@

Spray paint or other paint often will not allow the tin to open and close smoothly and should be avoided unless using the tin as a shadow box or mini canvas.

@

After gluing the background to the top of the tin, clamp around edges using mini clamps or spring clothespins in order to have the edges lay flat. Repeat if necessary.

TECHNIQUE Use an old credit card to smear acrylic paint onto a time card; you can also apply the paint through a stencil. Randomly glue paper scraps onto the time card. Glue the paper dolls to the cards, and then add some machine-stitching. Paint, doodle, and even stitch the dried tea bags, and then glue them to the time cards. Rubber stamp desired images onto the cards. Use a date stamp repeatedly to add interest. The final step for me is always to doodle on the piece with a permanent marker. It really completes the look.

submission

GUIDELINES Somerset Studio is published bi-monthly and is currently open to submissions from all our readers who wish to share their art with our audience.

GENERAL ARTWORK SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All artwork must arrive at our offices on or before the published deadlines. We prefer submissions of original art. If original art is not available, our next preference is hires digital images (300 dpi at 8½" x 10"). Colorcopy submissions are not accepted. For collaborative projects, it is the responsibility of the submitting artist to obtain permission from each participant prior to submission. In addition, each piece of the collaborative must be labeled with contact information of the artist who created it. Please be aware that the collaborative project in its entirety will only be returned to the submitting artist and must have sufďŹ cient return postage. All artwork must be properly identiďŹ ed with your name, address, and email address clearly printed on a label or tag attached to each submission. As artwork often gets separated from instructions during our selection process, we ask that you attach the information directly to the piece; for example, afďŹ x a label to the inside of a sleeve. If your piece is difďŹ cult to label, please attach your identiďŹ cation with a removable string, or pack the sample in a plastic bag with your identiďŹ cation. Artwork that is not properly identiďŹ ed cannot be considered for publication. Please include a note inside the package indicating which publication the submission is for. A concise yet thorough description must accompany each submission. Include separate documentation for each piece you submit. NOTE: If you are able, please keep an electronic version of your instructions, as you may be requested to send those in if your work is selected for publication.

ARTWORK MANAGEMENT POLICY We require you to supply sufficient funds if you wish your item(s) returned. We will provide tracking for all packages, but we 138

strongly encourage you to request insurance and provide additional funds. Stampington & Company is not responsible for damaged or lost artwork once it has been shipped out of our office. Send a check or money order made out to Stampington & Company to cover return shipping costs (U.S. funds). Please do not include return envelopes, packing materials, stamps, or prepaid labels and do not attach postage to packaging. For acknowledgment of artwork receipt, include a self-addressed, stamped postcard.

All samples, queries, and correspondence should be sent to:

Checks or money orders will be cashed and put in a mail funds account within 30 days of submission receipt. When your artwork is returned, the funds you provided for shipping will be drawn from the account.

Please note that the artwork itself often sells the article and encourage artists who have not published articles before to submit ideas, as editorial assistance will be provided. If a technique you wish to share was learned in a class, workshop, television, book, or other publication, Somerset Studio requires that you give credit to the author, source, or teacher and obtain permission to publish his or her technique prior to submitting it to us. Competitive editorial compensation is provided for all published articles.

Submissions intended for one issue may be better suited for another issue or publication, so we may request to hold your piece for up to 9 – 12 months. Items appearing in Somerset Studio Gallery may be held longer. Rest assured that we will take excellent care of your artwork, but Stampington & Company cannot be held responsible for damage or loss due to circumstances beyond our control. If you move, please send a postcard or email to the editor with your new address. If you need your artwork returned by a specific date, please indicate this in your submission information and send an email to the editor three weeks before the date you would like your submission returned. If you have any questions regarding our submission guidelines and artwork returns, please contact artmanagement@ stampington.com. If your piece is selected for publication you will receive a FREE issue of Somerset Studio.

WRITERS’ SUBMISSION GUIDELINES We are always interested in proposals for articles. If you have a unique story, project, or technique, please send samples of your artwork accompanied by a query letter outlining your article idea to the Editor-inChief at the address above.

Stampington & Company ATTN: Somerset Studio 22992 Mill Creek, Suite B Laguna Hills, CA 92653 The Editor-in-Chief also welcomes brief email queries: somersetstudio@stampington.com. No telephone calls, please.

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT Stampington & Company only accepts original artwork for publication consideration. All images used in artwork must be copyright free. Any techniques featured in artwork submissions that are not the artist’s own must be attributed to the proper instructor, book, artist, workshop, etc. It is the responsibility of the submitting artist to ensure that no copyright infringement has occurred and that all submitted work is their own.

SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Stampington & Company will not accept simultaneous submissions of artwork. While your work is under consideration, we ask that you do not submit the same piece of work to competing Web or print publishers. Likewise, artwork that has already been featured in other competing publications or sites will not be accepted. Publishing on your personal blog is permitted, but we ask that you adhere to our reproduction guidelines. Any questions can be directed to our editorial staff.

NEW PHOTO CHALLENGES With the production of affordable digital cameras and high-quality cellphone cameras, photography has become much more accessible lately. The ease of use that comes with both types of cameras means that we’re taking more pictures than ever before, and capturing our lives in an interesting way. That’s why we’ve decided to issue photo challenges in each issue of Somerset Studio. We know that, as artists, there are certain subject matters that you never tire of seeing, and we hope to share those images with our readers. PHOTO REQUIREMENTS In an effort to show the artistry of photography, we are asking for your edited versions of these images. You can use ďŹ lters, much like those found on Instagram, or you can create your own effects on them using photo-editing software. All images will need to be submitted at 350 dpi and measure 8" x 11" to be considered for publication. HOW TO SUBMIT For these photo challenges, we will be accepting submissions in a variety of ways. The ďŹ rst way is to send them by mail or email to the editor-inchief. The directions for that can be found in our submission guidelines, which you can ďŹ nd on the facing page. You can also submit them on Instagram by simply adding the appropriate hashtag to your post.

PAINTED HANDS At the end of a creative session, there is something so satisfying about peering at your hands and ďŹ nding them splattered with paints and inks. Somerset Studio’s editorial team just loves seeing pictures of artists’ hands all messy and painted, evidence of a day of work (or play). We’d love to see pictures of what your hands look like after a marathon session of art-making. Deadline: Ongoing

UPCOMING THEMES AT FIRST BLUSH

Who can forget that moment in "Steel Magnolias" when Julia Roberts declared, "My colors are blush and bashful?" The color blush has become as classic as the ďŹ lm that debuted nearly 30 years ago. It can be paired with whites and greys to create a romantic look, or coupled up with black or a bold color for something edgy. For our 2019 color challenge, we want to see how you incorporate the color blush into your mixed-media work. Cards, assemblages, altered books ... we can't wait to see what you come up with. Deadline: August 15, 2018

BOOKS BY HAND We never tire of receiving handmade books in the mail. They are all so different, and we really relish the opportunity of going through each page of every book. So many details emerge, and so many stories are told. For our February/March 2019 issue, we want to see your take on handmade books. You can use a classic binding technique, or you can come up with your own clever ideas for holding pages together. Elaborate and highly detailed, or raw and unique, we want to see what kind of book you come up with. Be sure to include completed pages inside! Deadline: October 15, 2018

CRAFTER

TEA LEAVES, I STAY BY BRUCE ADAMS

I

f you find the fountain of youth, don’t be surprised if it gushes forth tea instead of water. Here’s why: In the course of doing extensive research (I printed out four Wikipedia articles and read parts of two of them), I discovered that there is indeed a specific variety of tea whose fancy schmancy scientific name, matricaria chamomilla, can kinda sorta loosely be translated to mean “water of youth. But fending off if not flat-out reversing the aging process is the duty of only one of the innumerable battalions in tea’s army. Got a headache? Feeling lethargic? Tickle in your throat? Boil some water and start dunking those tea bags -- relief is just moments away, thanks to this magical elixir that’s apparently unparalleled at fixin’ what ails ya. And tea’s healing powers don’t stop at minor maladies. Chicken pox, ulcers, muscle spasms, insomnia, eczema, psoriasis, depression, anxiety, gastrointestinal woes, back pain, allergies, and various kidney and liver problems all pack their bags and run when tea comes riding into town. Why, tea even repairs stuff inside you that you never knew was broken. It balances neurotransmitter levels, reduces oxidative stress, eliminates free radicals (It doesn’t just issue a warning to them -- it eliminates them!), and stimulates cognitive function, whatever that is. A tireless multi-tasker of a beverage, tea is equally good for bad breath and sunburn, lowers both blood pressure and bad cholesterol, and

144

s *5,9 !5'534

though I didn’t find this in my research, I’ll bet it’s good for thirst, and may even do your taxes. How does tea perform all these miracles? I have no idea, but I figure it has something to do with its ingredients, a partial list of what reads like the index of a chemistry class textbook: aluminum, amino acids, calcium, epigallocatechin gallate, flavonoids, fluoride, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, polyphenols, potassium, theophylline, xanthene, and zinc. Insects who munch on tea leaves must be the healthiest creatures in the animal kingdom, no doubt living to be, like, a thousand years old and arm-wrestling gorillas for fun and money. Or bananas. So why have I, graying and achy and increasingly pear-shaped, never taken so much as a single sip of tea? The answer is simple: When I was a kid, tea, though not an adult beverage, was definitely a beverage for adults, and I was and still am desperate to hang onto my childhood for as long as possible. That’s probably why I’ve always been a sports guy, either as a participant or as a spectator. Be it baseball, basketball, jai alai, shuffleboard, or a company picnic egg-toss, any competitive sports-like endeavor is my cup of tea, my fountain of youth. As a golf guy, I take great pride in being far more interested in tee times than tea time. Nevertheless, to all tea drinkers out there, I salute you and your commitment to better health through ingesting polyphenols and manganese. Given the unpredictability of life, I suppose it’s possible that tea might one day become one of my life’s acquired tastes, something that at first seems unpleasant but eventually becomes as comfortable as a favorite sweatshirt -- something like Tom Waits music, or following politics. Until then, though, I’ll be content to stay on the other side of the line between us, obsessing over all things sporting in order to stay young, and occasionally taking a rejuvenating swig of my own magical elixir: Gatorade.
